The third-order Kerr nonlinear optical effect of a one-dimensional photonic bandgap structure of a cholesteric liquid crystal is investigated. In a femtosecond nonlinear transmission measurement, nonlinear optical changes in the bandgap edges are observed. From analysis of the dispersion relation, Kerr nonlinear coefficients of nematics, forming the cholesteric liquid crystal, are found to be enhanced by 1-2 orders of magnitude through the photonic bandgap structure.  相似文献

Through analysis of the dispersion relation in a photonic bandgap structure, the effective optical Kerr nonlinearity that determines a Z-scan profile particularly near the stop-band edges, is derived. Near and inside the stop band, the nonlinear optical phase change that originates from an off-resonant response is converted into a change in nonlinear optical intensity through Bragg reflection. The Z-scan measurement of a cholesteric liquid-crystal photonic bandgap structure confirmed that off-resonant Kerr nonlinearity is responsible for the characteristic open-aperture Z-scan profiles near the stop-band edges.  相似文献

The transfer matrix method was modified to explore the Kerr nonlinearity influence on laser radiation propagation in a one‐dimensional photonic crystal. The suggested spatial distribution of the refractive index allows to remove minibands and to make the transmission curve much steeper. Plain and steep photonic band gap edges are effective in creation of transmission anisotropy of powerful laser radiation. A picosecond pump-probe nonlinear optical measurement is performed in SiO2/TiO2 one-dimensional photonic bandgap structures fabricated by a solgel method. Both high and low band edges were examined by varying the probe wavelengths and angle tuning was also employed to further clarify the mechanism of a nonlinear optical response. The third-order nonlinear optical response in one-dimensional photonic bandgap structures that comprise TiO2 films is responsible for the nonlinear optical transmissions at both bandgap edges, with an 8% decrease at the low-energy edge and a 4.5% increase at the high-energy edge for a 355 nm pump intensity of 430 MW/cm2.  相似文献

A one-dimensional ZrO2/SiO2 photonic crystal with a 4-n -pentyl-4' -cyanobiphenyl (5CB) nematic defect layer was used to investigate the transmission spectra of light polarized parallel and perpendicular to the liquid-crystal director at different angles of incidence. The spectra of the photonic crystal were shown to split into four polarized components Tij at oblique incidence. When the incident angle increased, the bandgap edges and the defect modes shifted towards short wavelengths, while the amplitudes of the defect modes increased for the transverse magnetic polarization and decreased for the transverse electric polarization. The observed discrepancy between the defect mode amplitudes in the center and near the edges of the photonic bandgap was found to be related to the radiation losses inside the defect layer of a non-ideal photonic crystal. The simulated transmission spectra obtained using recurrence relations and taking into account the decay of defect modes are in good agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

A novel tunable highly birefringent photonic bandgap fiber (PBGF) is designed theoretically by filling its air holes with high-index material. The transmission band can be continuously tuned by changing the refractive index of the filling material. Accordingly, the tunable modal birefringence and polarization mode dispersion of the PBGFs are investigated by adjusting the refractive index of the filling material. Furthermore, we have also analyzed the effect of surface modes in the photonic bandgap on the characteristics of the tunable PBGFs. The simulation results show the feasibility of constructing birefringence-tunable photonic crystal fibers and related fiber devices in practical applications.  相似文献

We report on the existence of surface defect linear modes at an interface between the defect of one-dimensional photonic lattices and the uniform media. The interface defect can significantly affect the properties of linear modes. Such new type of modes exists in the first bandgap for positive defects; while they exist in the second bandgap for negative defects. Particularly, when a Gaussian beam, which is similar to the linear mode, is launched at the defect site, we find that the Gaussian beam can be strongly confined at defect site and robustness along longitudinal direction for a long distance. When launched at a small angle into the defect site, the Gaussian beam exhibits stable snake propagation.  相似文献

结合表面缺陷半无限光子晶体Tamm态与多孔硅光学传感机理,在光子晶体表面缺陷腔中引入多孔硅,并利用其高效的承载机制,提出基于多孔硅表面缺陷光子晶体Tamm态的折射率传感结构.在半无限光子晶体中缺陷腔与原来的周期性分层介质结构的界面上存在Tamm态,通过入射角度调制使其在缺陷腔中实现多次全反射,并在缺陷腔中加入吸收介质,使谐振波长在缺陷腔中完成衰荡,从而在反射谱中得到缺陷峰;调整光子晶体参数,使缺陷峰的半高全宽得到优化,提高其品质因数(Q值);在此基础上,根据Goos-H?nchen相位移与谐振波长的关系,建立由待测样本折射率改变所导致的多孔硅表面吸附层有效折射率变化与缺陷峰值波长漂移之间的关系模型,并分析其折射率传感特性.结果表明,此生物传感结构Q值为1429,灵敏度为546.67 nm/RIU,证明了该传感结构的有效性,可为高Q值和高灵敏度折射率传感器的设计提供一定的理论参考.  相似文献

Using three-dimensional time-domain numerical simulations of the nonlinear dispersive Maxwell equations for a defect microcavity in a photonic crystal wire, we show that the transmission through the bandgap can be all-optically modulated via the generation of transient states associated with the nonlinear splitting of the defect mode. 在传统的基于全内反射原理的低折射率比介质波导所构建的相位移调制型光学器件中,调制区域的长度通常在毫米到厘米量级.由于器件横向尺寸保持在微米量级,因此狭长结构成为了传统光波导器件的典型特征,这限制了光学器件集成度的提高,严重制约了集成光路的进一步发展.光子晶体的出现为高密集成光路的发展提供了一条新的途径.本文使用平面波展开方法计算了光子晶体线缺陷波导中的色散曲线.研究发现:在色散曲线下边缘处,材料折射率的一个微小变化可以引起传输常数的较大变化,如果工作频率点选择在带下边缘附近,则可以大幅度减小相位移调制型器件调制区域的长度.本文使用时域有限差分方法进一步验证这种增强效应,计算结果表明,对于0.46%的折射率变化,光子晶体线缺陷波导中的相位调制长度仅为均匀媒质中相位移调制长度的11.7%.通过以进一步研究,这种增强效应有望应用与高密度集成光路.  相似文献

We experimentally and numerically investigate femtosecond-pulse propagation in a microstructured optical fiber consisting of a silica core surrounded by airholes that are filled with a high-index fluid. This fiber combines the resonant properties of hollow-core bandgap fibers and the high nonlinearity of index-guiding waveguides. A range of nonlinear optical effects can be observed, including soliton propagation, dispersive wave generation, and a Raman self-frequency shift. Tuning the center wavelength of the laser and varying the refractive index of the fluid lead to different propagation effects, mediated by the strongly wavelength-dependent group-velocity dispersion in these photonic bandgap confining structures.  相似文献

Self-phase modulation can efficiently shape the spectrum of an optical pulse propagating along an optical material with Kerr nonlinearity. In this work we show that a one-dimensional Kerr nonlinear photonic crystal can impose anomalous spectrum modulation to a high-power ultrashort light pulse. The spectrum component at the photonic band gap edge can be one order of magnitude enhanced in addition to the ordinary spectrum broadening due to self-phase modulation. The enhancement is strictly pinned at the band gap edge by changing the sample length, the intensity or central wavelength of the incident pulse. The phenomenon is attributed to band gap induced enhancement of light-matter interaction.  相似文献

利用传输矩阵方法研究了含负折射率缺陷的一维光子晶体的透射谱.以19个周期的1/4波堆存在3个负折射率缺陷的光子晶体为例进行了数值计算.结果表明:如果改变缺陷的折射率,缺陷模之间的耦合作用将发生改变,带隙中形成的杂质带也随之改变; 当这个折射率取适当值时,在禁带中出现多个尖锐的透射峰,与正折射率缺陷构成的杂质带不同.  相似文献

通过平面波展开法对由Al2O3介质棒在空气背景介质中构成含有点缺陷的二维正方光子晶体微腔结构进行研究,计算得出缺陷态能带以及缺陷态模场分布。缺陷模对应的电磁波波长为470~476nm。对该微腔结构的品质因数的求解,得出缺陷态光谱曲线。在光谱曲线中,随着传输波长的增大,将产生几个峰值,并且在475nm处的波动最为明显,反映出在475nm附近的电磁波段在缺陷处的光强较大。进一步利用全矢量等效折射率法研究该结构缺陷模频率的稳定性,得出等效折射率的变化曲线。从等效折射率变化曲线可以看出,当传输波长达到475nm时,该结构已经达到稳定传输的区域。含缺陷模的二维光子晶体微腔结构在光子晶体发光二极管以及高阈值半导体激光器等方面有着重要的应用价值。  相似文献

Nonlinear photonic crystals made from polystyrene materials that have Kerr nonlinearity can exhibit ultrafast optical switching when the samples are pumped by ultrashort optical pulses with high intensity due to the change of the refractive index of polystyrene and subsequent shift of the band gap edge or defect state resonant frequency. Polystyrene has a large Kerr nonlinear susceptibility and almost instantaneous response to pump light, making it suitable for the realization of ultrafast optical switching with a response time as short as a few femtoseconds. In this paper, we review our experimental progress on the continual improvement of all-optical switching speed in two-dimensional and three-dimensional polystyrene nonlinear photonic crystals in the past years. Several relevant issues are discussed and analyzed, including different mechanisms for all-optical switching, preparation of nonlinear photonic crystal samples by means of microfabrication and self-assembly techniques, characterization of optical switching performance by means of femtosecond pump-probe technique, and different ways to lower the pump power of optical switching to facilitate practical applications in optical information processing. We have investigated the nonlinear propagation of light in photonic crystal fibers filled with nematic liquid crystals. We analyzed a configuration with a periodic modulation of the refractive index corresponding to a matrix of waveguides. Matrices of coupled waveguides allow observing a variety of new phenomena both for low power light beam propagation and with an existence of nonlinear effects. The opportunity for the creation of solitary waves caused by the interplay between diffraction and nonlinear effects in these kinds of fibers is investigated. At low power the propagating light beam spreads as it couples to more and more waveguides. When the intensity is increased the light modifies the refractive index distribution, inducing a defect in the periodic structure. The creation of such a defect can lead to a situation in which the light becomes self-localized and its diffractive broadening is eliminated. Eventually, in the case of positive Kerr-type nonlinearity, a discrete soliton can be created. In the case of negative nonlinearity the refractive index decreases with the optical power and can lead to bandgap shifting. The incident beam, with a frequency initially within the bandgap, is then turned outside the bandgap resulting in the changing of the propagation effect for the discrete diffraction effect. The transmission characteristics of a 2-dimensional (2D) square lattice photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) with an additional perpendicular line defect are investigated by the plane wave expansion method (PWM) and the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. From simulation results and theoretical analysis, it is found that changing the refractive index of the dielectric columns in the additional line defect can effectively adjust the light transmission through the PCW. The working mechanism can be boiled down to either the excitation of a single defect mode or the contra-directional coupling of the two defect modes. And this mechanism can be used to design other tunable optical devices.  相似文献
