The self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles into well-ordered structures in the absence of solvents is generally hindered by van der Waals forces, leading to random aggregates between them. To address the problem, we functionalized rigid rare-earth (RE) nanoparticles with a layer of flexible polymers by electrostatic complexation. Consequently, an ordered and solvent-free liquid crystal (LC) state of RE nanoparticles was realized. The RE nanomaterials including nanospheres, nanorods, nanodiscs, microprisms, and nanowires all show a typical nematic LC phase with one-dimensional orientational order, while their microstructures strongly depend on the particles’ shape and size. Interestingly, the solvent-free thermotropic LCs possess an extremely wide temperature range from −40 °C to 200 °C. The intrinsic ordering and fluidity endow anisotropic luminescence properties in the system of shearing-aligned RE LCs, offering potential applications in anisotropic optical micro-devices.  相似文献

Lead sulphide (PbS) nano-sculptured thin films (nSTFs) are prepared for the first time using glancing angle deposition technique by physical vapour deposition process. An anisotropic morphology is obtained, which provides an orientational effect. Due to this anisotropic nature of PbS nSTF an attempt has been made to check its effect on the alignment of nematic liquid crystals (LCs). Two different LC devices were fabricated, that is, anti-parallel aligned or electrically-controlled birefringence and hybrid twisted nematic. It is noticed that in both types of devices, good alignment is obtained with high extinction and contrast. A significant effect of these alignments on the electro-optic properties of the LC is reported such as the threshold voltage, response time and contrast ratio.  相似文献

Octadecylamine-functionalised single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were dispersed into nematic liquid crystals (LCs) doped with chiral molecules. The collective orientation of nematic LC molecules in helical layers was manipulated by varying dopant concentration. Highly anisotropic nature of SWCNTs enhanced the anisotropy of the LC as confirmed by polarised fluorescence spectroscopy. The π–π interaction of SWCNTs present in the planar alignment layers and twisted nematic LC molecules affects the molecular relaxation process. An irreversible electro-optic memory in the material has been observed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The properties of the thin films of liquid crystal (LC) molecules can be governed easily by external fields. The anisotropic structure of the LC molecules has a large impact on the electrical and optical properties of the film. The Langmuir monolayer (LM) of LC molecules at the air–water interface is known to exhibit a variety of surface phases which can be transferred onto a solid substrate using the Langmuir?Blodgett (LB) technique. Here, we have studied the LM and LB films of asymmetrically substituted bent-core LC molecules. The morphology of LB film of the molecules is found to be a controlling parameter for aligning bulk LC in the nematic phase. It was found that the LB films of the bent-core molecules possessing defects favour the planar orientation of nematic LC, whereas the LB films with fewer defects show homeotropic alignment. The defect in LB films may introduce splay or bend distortions in the nematic near the alignment layer which can govern the planar alignment of the bulk LC. The uniform layer of LB film facilitates the molecules of nematic to anchor vertically due to a strong van der Waals interaction between the aliphatic chains leading to a homeotropic alignment.  相似文献

The effects of the surface polarity of a glass substrate on the orientation of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) were studied using the polarised optical microscope and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. On the surface of oxygen plasma treated glass, a homeotropic alignment of LCs was induced for LCs with negative dielectric anisotropy. This suggests that vertical orientation of LCs could be induced on a polar glass substrate without using an LC alignment layer. Upon cooling towards the isotropic–nematic transition, E7 with positive dielectric anisotropy changes its LC arrangement to isotropic, homeotropic, planar orientations in order. The nematic LC anchoring transition of E7 was interpreted by considering the competition between van der Waals forces and dipole interactions that control the alignment of LC molecules on a polar glass surface.  相似文献

Stimuli‐directed alignment control of liquid crystals (LCs) with desired molecular orientation is currently in the limelight for the development of smart functional materials and devices. Here, photoresponsive azo thiol (AzoSH) was grafted onto gold nanoparticles (GNPs). The resulting hybrid GNPs were able to homogeneously mix with a commercially available nematic LC host, as evidenced by Cryo‐TEM. Interestingly, the LC nanocomposites were found to undergo reversible alignment transition upon light irradiation as a consequence of the transcis photoisomerization of the azo groups on the GNP surface. LC molecules in either planar or bare glass cells were able to change their alignment to vertical upon UV irradiation, while the vertically aligned LC molecules returned to the planar or random orientation under visible irradiation. Neither the azo thiol molecules nor the unfunctionalized GNPs alone promoted the alignment of the LC molecules in the system upon light irradiation. The photoinduced vertical alignment without applied electric or magnetic field was very stable over time and with respect to temperature. Furthermore, an optically switchable device based on the photostimulated reversible alignment control of LCs was demonstrated.  相似文献

Characterisation of liquid crystals (LCs) as solvents is needed, to obtain the polarity and solvatochromic polarity parameters of these media. Polarity parameters demonstrate the effects of LC media on the photo-physical behaviour of solute molecules in an anisotropic medium. The practical limitations in determining solvent polarity scale parameters for LCs can overcome the overlapping absorption band of LCs and solvent-sensitive standard compounds or their insolubility in LCs. In this work, we report Kamlet–Abboud–Taft polarity functions of some nematic LCs in different temperatures and phases, isotropic and anisotropic, with the solvatochromic method, using the Reichardt's dye and 2,6-diphenyl-4-(2,4,6-triphenyl-1-pyridinio)-phenolate standard probe. In addition, a new azo and coumarin dye were used as probes to obtain some solvatochromic polarity parameters. Finally, a new polarity parameter, the LC anisotropic matrix, is introduced.  相似文献

The self-organizing properties of nematic liquid crystals can be used to align carbon nanotubes dispersed in them. Because the nanotubes are so much thinner than the elastic penetration length, the alignment is caused by the coupling of the unperturbed director field to the anisotropic interfacial tension of the nanotubes in the nematic host fluid. In order to relate the degree of alignment of the nanotubes to the properties of the nematic liquid crystal, we treat the two components on the same footing and combine Landau-de Gennes free energies for the thermotropic ordering of the liquid crystal and for the lyotropic nematic ordering of carbon nanotubes caused by their mutually excluded volumes. The phase ordering of the binary mixture is analyzed as a function of the volume fraction of the carbon nanotubes, the strength of the coupling and the temperature. We find that the degree of ordering of the nanorods is enslaved by the properties of the host liquid and that it can be tuned by raising or lowering the temperature or by increasing or decreasing their concentration. By comparing the theory to recent experiments, we find the anchoring energy of multiwalled carbon nanotubes to be in the range from 10(-10) to 10(-7) N m(-1).  相似文献

In this study, a novel 4-(4-octyloxybenzoyloxy)biphenyl-3′,5′-diaminobenzoate and polyimides based on it were synthesized. The polyimide with mesogenic unit side chain exhibited excellent vertical alignment for nematic liquid crystal (LC). The pretilt angles of LCs above 89° were kept after the rubbing process with 220 mm rubbing strength. The polyimide films as the alignment layer were baked at 120℃ for 12 h, the vertical alignment of LCs was still uniform and stable. Meanwhile, the UV-vis spectra of the noyel polyimide films showed the high transparency in a visible wave length.  相似文献

Detection of amino acid (AA) is an essential step to understand various biological processes. In this study, we used innovative optical birefringent patterns of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) for the detection of several AAs. We attempted to use capillary-confined nematic LCs as sensor for AA analysis because their three-dimensional micro-scale architecture of LCs allowed better performance than that of mainly reported LC thin film sensors owing to the effect on the formation and dynamics of point defect. The sensing system was built by disrupting the alignment of a nematic LC, 4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl (5CB), using the dopant of dodecyl aldehyde. Detection principle is based on the chemical analytical method of aldehyde titration for AAs, wherein the reaction between AAs and aldehyde group generates Schiff bases that could alter the configuration of nematic LCs at the aqueous/LC interface. The patterns generated in the reaction are captured by polarising optical microscopy (POM) and are visible to the naked eye. The functionalised LCs detected glycine at concentrations as low as 1 pM. There was a surprising result that it can selectively detect D-AAs against their L-isomers, however, further efforts are required to explain the mechanism.  相似文献

We obtained homogeneously aligned liquid crystals (LCs) on ion beam (IB) irradiated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) by controlling the IB energy. We then examined the LC alignment state using polarized optical microscopy and conducted thermal stability testing. We obtained homogeneous LC alignment at IB energies above 1,400 eV, indicating that strong IB energy facilitates the alignment of LCs on the PMMA surface. This surface was analyzed by atomic force microscopy, and the contact angles (CAs) were measured to elucidate the mechanism of LC alignment. The increased surface energy strengthened the van der Waals interaction between the surface and LCs, thereby inducing stable, homogeneous LC alignment. Electro-optical (EO) characteristics were measured using twisted nematic (TN) LC mode. Compared to LC cells with conventionally used rubbed polyimide (PI), the LC cells with IB-irradiated PMMA exhibited higher thermal budgets and good electro-optical characteristics. These new LC cells have promising potential for advanced LC displays.  相似文献

An in situ self-assembled molecular layer of 1-pyrenesulfonic acid sodium salt as an alignment agent was formed on indium tin oxide substrates for vertically aligning liquid crystals (LCs). The thus-aligned LCs exhibited uniform vertical alignment under crossed polarisers. The electro-optical characteristic of the LC cell fabricated using this method exhibited better performance than those of conventional LC cells with a polyimide alignment layer. Because the proposed alignment method is a simple one and involves low concentrations of the alignment agent (0.05 wt%), it is highly cost-effective. Further, the pyrene derivative, when mixed with LCs, exhibited photoluminescence (PL) under ultraviolet light. Given that the proposed method resulted in highly vertically aligned LCs and the alignment agent exhibited PL, the method should find wide use in the fabrication of colour-filter-free LC displays.  相似文献

We investigated new rubbing-free techniques for liquid crystal (LC) alignment with non- polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on plates coated with two kinds of the polyimide (PI) films. It was found that monodomain alignment of nematic (N) LC is obtained in the cell having a PI surface without a side chain. We successfully observed that the generated pretilt angle of the NLC is about 3 with an angle of incidence of 70 on the PI surface without side chains. This pretilt angle generation is attributed to interaction between the LC molecules and the polymer surfaces; the uniform alignment of NLC is attributed to anisotropic dispersion force effects due to photo-depolymerization of polymer on PI surfaces.  相似文献

We investigated viscoelastic and photoresponsive properties of the microparticle/liquid-crystal (LC) composite gels. The mechanical strength of the colloidal gels can be widely tuned by varying particle concentrations. With increasing particle concentration, a storage modulus of the particle/LC composite gels increased and reached over 10(4) Pa, showing good self-supporting ability. We demonstrated for the first time that the particle/LC composite gels exhibited rapid and repetitive recovery of the mechanical strength after large-amplitude oscillatory breakdown. In addition, photoresponsive properties of the composite gels were investigated by the cis-trans photoisomerization of the azobenzene compound doped into the host LCs. The photochemical gel-sol transition could be repeatedly induced by changing the phase structure of the host LCs between nematic and isotropic, using the photoisomerization. The particle/LC composite gels can be applied to optically healable materials by the site-selective gel-sol transition based on the photochemical modulation of the phase structures of the host LCs.  相似文献

Size- and aggregation-controlled dispersion of thin multiwalled carbon nanotube (t-MWCNT) in negative dielectric anisotropic liquid crystal (LC) material exhibits remarkable improvement in electro-optic response time in vertically aligned LC cells. The physical properties such as birefringence, dielectric anisotropy and clearing temperature of nanotube dispersed LC material appear to be almost invariant to that of pristine LC. Nevertheless, the response time shows noticeable improvement, especially in decaying time associated with transition from maximum to minimum transmission, hence important for faster switching LC devices. The effect is attributed to that vertically aligned t-MWCNTs along the field direction play role of vertical alignment layer between LCs, consequently resulting in increased bend elastic constant of LCs.  相似文献

During the recent years, liquid crystals (LCs) have much attention owing to their wide range of possible application and structural properties in electronics and optics. In this study, two different azo structured dyes (Disperse Yellow 3 and 7) and their mixture were separately doped to each of two different nematic LCs (E8 and E63). Their solubilities (except dye mixture), order parameters, textures and phase transition temperatures were determined. Single-walled nanotubes and fullerene C60 in a small amount were separately added to each of these solutions, and the experiments were repeated at the final stage analogously except solubilities. The solubilities of dyes in the LC E63 were lower than those of E8. The highest order parameter value was attained with Yellow 7 dye in E63 nematic host.  相似文献

In this paper, solution-derived gallium oxide (GaO) films are fabricated for the homogeneous alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) after an ion-beam (IB) irradiation process. GaO thin films are prepared under a variety of temperatures and different IB irradiation intensities, and the physicochemical performances of the fabricated GaO thin films are analysed using a UV-vis spectrometer, an atomic force microscope, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A higher transmittance of 85.40% from GaO thin film is obtained compared with that of polyimide (PI) film (83.52%), which indicates the feasibility for a GaO thin layer to substitute for a conventional PI layer as an alignment layer. LCs are found to align on the GaO thin film after pre-baking at 100°C and homogeneous and uniform low-IB intensity irradiation. We also determined the electro-optical (EO) characteristics of the twisted nematic (TN) cells fabricated with GaO thin layers and found them to be similar to those of cells fabricated with PI layers. Overall, GaO films achieved via the IB irradiation method are promising LC alignment layers due to the method’s low-temperature solution-derived process.  相似文献

In this paper, the polyanion-containing cinnamoyl group (PACSS-CF3) was self-assembled with diazoresin (DR) to form a kind of stable covalent ultrathin film by irradiation with 365?nm UV light. The photoalignment properties of the DR/PACSS-CF3 covalent film were investigated. The covalent film was found to have anisotropy after irradiation by 297?nm linearly polarised ultraviolet light (LPUVL), and could induce uniform alignment of liquid crystals (LCs). The pretilt angle of the LC was 2.5°. The stability of the film was enhanced by the covalent bonds. The films were thermally stable to 180°C. Polarised UV-Vis spectroscopy was utilised to investigate the photochemical process of the covalent film. It was found that cinnamoyl moieties parallel to the polarisation direction of the LPUVL were consumed by the photoreaction faster than those perpendicular to the polarisation direction. It can be concluded that the selective photoreaction induced the anisotropy of the films. The anisotropic films induced the homogeneous alignment of LC.  相似文献

A novel photosensitive polyimide, poly(4,4'-stilbenylene 4,4'-oxidiphthalimide) (ODPA-Stilbene PSPI) was newly synthesized. The most surprising feature of this PSPI is that the PSPI films irradiated with linear polarized ultraviolet light (LPUVL) can favorably induce a unidirectional alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) in contact with the film surface and further switch the director of the unidirectionally aligned LCs from a perpendicular direction to a parallel direction with respect to the polarization direction of LPUVL by simply controlling the exposure dose in the irradiation process. These LPUVL-irradiated films were found to provide high anchoring energy to LCs, always giving very stable, homogeneous cells with unidirectionally aligned LCs regardless of the LC alignment directions. In the films, the PSPI polymer chains were found to undergo favorably unidirectional orientation via a specific orientation sequence of the polymer chain segments led by the directionally selective trans-cis photoisomerization of the stilbene chromophore units in the backbone induced by LPUVL exposure. Such unidirectionally oriented polymer chains of the films induce alignment of the LCs along the orientation direction of the polymer chains via favorable anisotropic molecular interactions between the oriented polymer chain segments and the LC molecules. In addition, the PSPI has an excellent film formation processibility; good quality PSPI thin films with a smooth surface are easily produced by simple spin-coating of the soluble poly(amic acid) precursor and subsequent thermal imidization process. In summary, this new PSPI is the promising LC alignment layer candidate with rubbing-free processing for the production of advanced LC display devices, including LC display televisions with large display areas.  相似文献
