The glucose oxidase and glucose mediated formation of amphipilic copolymers of N‐(ferrocenoylmethyl)acrylamide (NFMA) and N,N‐diethylacrylamide (DEA) in aqueous cyclodextrin solution is presented. Thereby, NFMA is not only a comonomer but also part of the redox initiation system. The obtained copolymers contain NFMA units between 1 and 10 mol%. The molecular masses of the copolymers are dependent on the ferrocene content, whereupon molecular weights between 38 000 and 71 000 g mol−1 are achieved.

Surface‐initiated photo‐induced copper‐mediated radical polymerization is employed to graft a wide range of polyacrylate brushes from silicon substrates at extremely low catalyst concentrations. This is the first time that the controlled nature of the reported process is demonstrated via block copolymer formation and re‐initiation experiments. In addition to unmatched copper catalyst concentrations in the range of few ppb, film thicknesses up to almost 1 μm are achieved within only 1 h.

In this study, the group transfer polymerization (GTP) of the functional monomer 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TMSPMA) is reported to produce polymers of different architectures and topologies. TMSPMA is successfully polymerized and copoly­merized with GTP to produce well‐defined (co)polymers that can be used to fabricate functional hybrid materials like hydrogels and films.

Bridgehead imine‐substituted cyclopentadithiophene structural units, in combination with highly electronegative acceptors that exhibit progressively delocalized π‐systems, afford donor–acceptor (DA) conjugated polymers with broad absorption profiles that span technologically relevant wavelength (λ) ranges from 0.7 < λ < 3.2 μm. A joint theoretical and experimental study demonstrates that the presence of the cross‐conjugated substituent at the donor bridgehead position results in the capability to fine‐tune structural and electronic properties so as to achieve very narrow optical bandgaps (Egopt < 0.5 eV). This strategy affords modular DA copolymers with broad‐ and long‐wavelength light absorption in the infrared and materials with some of the narrowest bandgaps reported to date.

Diarylbutadiyne derivatives are ideal monomers for providing the π‐electron‐conjugated system of polydiacetylenes (PDAs). The geometrical parameters for diacetylene topochemical polymerization are known. However, control of the molecules under these parameters is yet to be addressed. This work shows that by simply tailoring diarylbutadiyne with amide side‐chain substituents, the arrangement of the substituents and the resulting hydrogen bond framework allows formation of π‐electron‐conjugated PDA.

A convenient synthesis of sustainable polyamides, which contain side groups and stereocenters, starting from the biobased small terpene β‐pinene is reported. The polyamides, which are obtained via the pinene‐based lactam via ring‐opening polymerization, show excellent thermal properties, rendering this approach very interesting for the utilization of novel biobased and structurally significant high‐performance polymers and materials. Polymer masses and yields are shown to be dependent on different parameters, and the stereoinformation of the lactam monomer can thus be transferred into the polymer chain. In addition, another lactam side product can also be transformed to polyamides.

A novel one‐component type II polymeric photoinitiator, poly(vinyl alcohol)–thioxanthone (PVA–TX), is synthesized by a simple acetalization process and characterized. PVA–TX enables photopolymerization of methyl methacrylate and acrylamide in both organic and aqueous media. Photopolymerization proceeds even in the absence of a co‐initiator since PVA–TX possesses both chromophoric and hydrogen donating sites in the structure.

The present review focuses on the recent progress made in thin film orientation of semi‐conducting polymers with particular emphasis on methods using epitaxy and shear forces. The main results reported in this review deal with regioregular poly(3‐alkylthiophene)s and poly(dialkylfluorenes). Correlations existing between processing conditions, macromolecular parameters and the resulting structures formed in thin films are underlined. It is shown that epitaxial orientation of semi‐conducting polymers can generate a large palette of semi‐crystalline and nanostructured morphologies by a subtle choice of the orienting substrates and growth conditions.

This paper reports on the synthesis of well‐defined polyacrylamide‐based nanogels via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) dispersion polymerization, highlighting a templateless route for the efficient synthesis of nanogels based on water‐soluble polymers. RAFT dispersion polymerization of acrylamide in co‐nonsolvents of water–tert‐butanol mixtures by chain extension from poly(dimethylacrylamide) shows well‐controlled polymerization process, uniform nanogel size, and excellent colloidal stability. The versatility of this approach is further demonstrated by introducing a hydrophobic co‐monomer (butyl acrylate) without disturbing the dispersion polymerization process.

Imitating the natural “energy cascade” architecture, we present a single‐molecular rod‐like nano‐light harvester (NLH) based on a cylindrical polymer brush. Block copolymer side chains carrying (9,9‐diethylfluoren‐2‐yl)methyl methacrylate units as light absorbing antennae (energy donors) are tethered to a linear polymer backbone containing 9‐anthracenemethyl methacrylate units as emitting groups (energy acceptors). These NLHs exhibit very efficient energy absorption and transfer. Moreover, we manipulate the energy transfer by tuning the donor–acceptor distance.

In this study, the binding kinetics of synthetic glycopolypeptides to the dendritic cell lectin DC‐SIGN and their inhibition potential for DC‐SIGN interactions with the gp120 envelope glycoprotein of HIV‐1 (gp120) are investigated.

In this work, activated ester chemistry is employed to synthesize biocompatible and readily functionalizable polymersomes. Via aminolysis of pentafluorophenyl methacrylate‐based precursor polymers, an N‐(2‐hydroxypropyl) methacrylamide (HPMA)‐analog hydrophilic block is obtained. The precursor polymers can be versatile functionalized by simple addition of suitable primary amines during aminolysis as demonstrated using a fluorescent dye. Vesicle formation is proven by cryoTEM and light scattering. High encapsulation efficiencies for hydrophilic cargo like siRNA are achieved using dual centrifugation and safe encapsulation is demonstrated by gel electrophoresis. In vitro studies reveal low cytotoxicity and no protein adsorption‐induced aggregation in human blood serum occurs, making the vesicles interesting candidates as nanosized drug carriers.

High molecular weight cyclic poly(ε‐caprolactone)s (cPCLs) with variable ring size are synthesized via light‐induced ring closure of α,ω‐anthracene‐terminated PCL (An‐PCL‐An). The ring size of cPCL is tunable simply by adjusting the polymer concentration from 10 to 100 mg mL−1 in THF. The cyclo­addition via the bimolecular cyclization of An‐PC‐An is well characterized by a variety of analyses such as 1H NMR and UV–vis spectroscopies, gel‐permeation chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry. The reversible dimerization of An induced by heating enables the cyclic PCL to have a switchable “on–off” capability. This novel light‐induced ring‐closure technique can be one of the most powerful candidates for producing various well‐defined cyclic polymers in highly concentrated polymer solution.

The synthesis of tetracene‐ and pentacene‐annulated norbornadienes, formed through the Diels–Alder reaction of a dehydroacene with cyclopentadiene is reported. Ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) leads to polymers that are investigated with respect to their physical, optical, and electronic properties by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), UV–vis spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The pentacene‐containing polymer P1 is successfully integrated into an organic field‐effect transistor (OFET); the tetracene‐containing polymer P2 is integrated into an organic light‐emitting diode (OLED).

An interesting cooperation between Candida antarctica Lipase B (CAL‐B) and alkaline protease from Bacillus subtilis (BSP) in the copolymerization of bulky ibuprofen‐containing hydroxyacid methyl ester (HAEP) and ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL) is observed. This cooperation improved the of the polymers from 3130 (CAL‐B) to 9200 g mol–1 (CAL‐B/BSP). Experimental results clearly indicate that CAL‐B mainly catalyzes the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ε‐CL under the initiation of HAEP to form the homopolymer of ε‐CL, while BSP catalyzes the subsequent polycondensation of the ROP product to yield the copolymer with increased molecular weight. Furthermore, using suitable chemo‐enzymatic methods, valuable polyesters with chiral (R)‐ or (S)‐ibuprofen pendants can be tailor‐made.

A commercially available palladium N‐heterocyclic carbene (Pd‐NHC) precatalyst is used to initiate chain‐growth polymerization of 2‐bromo‐3‐hexyl‐5‐trimethylstannylthiophene. The molecular weight of the resultant poly(3‐hexylthiophene) can be modulated (7 to 73 kDa, Đ = 1.14 to 1.53) by varying the catalyst concentration. Mass spectrometry data confirm control over the polymer end groups and 1H NMR spectroscopy reveals that the palladium catalyst is capable of “ring‐walking”. A linear relationship between Mn and monomer conversion is observed. Atomic force microscopy and X‐ray scattering verify the regioregular nature of the resultant polythiophene.

Hydrozirconation on vinyl‐terminated substrates (silicon wafer and nanosilica sphere) is employed as an efficient way for immobilization of zirconocene catalyst through Zr C bonds, which is applied in surface coordination ethylene polymerization producing surface‐tethered polyethylene (PE). The formation of Zr C σ bond induced by hydrozirconation provides an initiator precursor for growing a layer of PE covalently linked onto substrates. The results from SEM, AFM, and TEM show that the surface polymerization is controlled by hydrozirconation. Surface pattern or core–shell structure with crystalline PE coating can be formed, when silicon wafer is selectively functionalized with vinyl‐groups or vinyl‐modified nanosilica is applied. It is believed that hydrozirconation for the synthesis of zirconocene initiator can be a versatile route to prepare polyolefin hybrid materials.

The successful chain‐growth copper(I)‐catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) polymerization employing Cu(0)/pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) and alkyl halide as catalyst is first investigated by a combination of nuclear magnetic resonance, gel‐permeation chromatography, and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry. In addition, the electron transfer mediated “click‐radical” concurrent polymerization utilizing Cu(0)/PMDETA as catalyst is successfully employed to generate well‐defined copolymers, where controlled CuAAC polymerization of clickable ester monomer is progressed in the main chain acting as the polymer backbone, the controlled radical polymerization (CRP) of acrylic monomer is carried out in the side chain. Furthermore, it is found that there is strong collaborative effect and compatibility between CRP and CuAAC polymerization to improve the controllability.

Photo‐crosslinkable and amine‐containing block copolymer nanoparticles are synthesized via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization‐induced self‐assembly of a multifunctional core‐forming monomer, 2‐((3‐(4‐(diethylamino)phenyl)acryloyl)oxy)ethyl methacrylate (DEMA), using poly(2‐hydroxypropyl methacrylate) macromolecular chain transfer agent as a steric stabilizer in methanol at 65 °C. By tuning the chain length of PDEMA, a range of nanoparticle morphologies (sphere, worm, and vesicle) can be obtained. Since cinnamate groups can easily undergo a [2 + 2] cycloaddition of the carbon–carbon double bonds upon UV irradiation, the as‐prepared block copolymer nanoparticles are readily stabilized by photo‐crosslinking to produce anisotropic nanoparticles. The crosslinked block copolymer nanoparticles can be used as templates for in situ formation polymer/gold hybrid nanoparticles.

In this research, the synthesis of boron‐ketoiminate‐containing polymers is reported with large molecular weights ( = 20 000) and their optical properties are examined by UV–vis absorption and photoluminescence spectrometries. It is shown that the polymers exhibit strong emission both in the solution and solid states (Φ PL,THF = 0.46–0.80, Φ PL,film = 0.13–0.38). These optical properties can be explained by a donor–acceptor interaction between the boron ketoiminate and the electron‐donating comonomer such as fluorene or bithiophene. Furthermore, in the solid states, their emission colors can be successfully tuned from blue to orange by the substituents on the nitrogen atom with the difference of the steric hindrance (λ PL,THF = 464–546 nm, λ PL,film = 486–604 nm).
