This article presents a novel III‐V on silicon laser. This work exploits the phenomenon that a passive silicon cavity, side‐coupled to a III‐V waveguide, will provide high and narrow‐band reflectivity into the III‐V waveguide: the resonant mirror. This results in an electrically pumped laser with a threshold current of 4 mA and a side‐mode suppression ratio up to 48 dB.

We experimentally demonstrate an optically‐pumped III‐V/Si vertical‐cavity laser with lateral emission into a silicon waveguide. This on‐chip hybrid laser comprises a distributed Bragg reflector, a III‐V active layer, and a high‐contrast grating reflector, which simultaneously funnels light into the waveguide integrated with the laser. This laser has the advantages of long‐wavelength vertical‐cavity surface‐emitting lasers, such as low threshold and high side‐mode suppression ratio, while allowing integration with silicon photonic circuits, and is fabricated using CMOS compatible processes. It has the potential for ultrahigh‐speed operation beyond 100 Gbit/s and features a novel mechanism for transverse mode control.

We report complete spatial shaping (both phase and amplitude) of the second‐harmonic beam generated in a nonlinear photonic crystal. Using a collinear second‐order process in a nonlinear computer generated hologram imprinted on the crystal, the desired beam is generated on‐axis and in the near field. This enables compact and efficient one‐dimensional beam shaping in comparison to previously demonstrated off‐axis Fourier holograms. We experimentally demonstrate the second‐harmonic generation of high‐order Hermite–Gauss, top hats and arbitrary skyline‐shaped beams.

We demonstrate a scheme incorporating dual‐coupled microresonators through which mode interactions are intentionally introduced and controlled for Kerr frequency comb (microcomb) generation in the normal‐dispersion region. Microcomb generation, repetition rate selection, and mode locking are achieved with coupled silicon nitride microrings controlled via an on‐chip microheater. The proposed scheme shows for the first time a reliable design strategy for normal‐dispersion microcombs and may make it possible to generate microcombs in an extended wavelength range (e.g. in the visible) where normal material dispersion is likely to dominate.

The terahertz (THz) radiation from InGaN/GaN dot‐in‐a‐wire nanostructures has been investigated. A submicrowatt THz signal is generated with just ten vertically stacked InGaN quantum dots (QDs) in each GaN nanowire. Based on the experimental results and analysis, a single quantum wire is expected to generate an output power as high as 10 pW, corresponding to 1 pW per dot. These structures are among the most efficient three‐dimensional quantum‐confined nanostructures for the THz emission. By applying a reverse bias along the wires in a light‐emitting device (LED) consisting of such nanostructures, the THz output power is increased more than fourfold. Based on THz and photoluminescence (PL) experiments, the mechanism for the THz emission is attributed to dipole radiation induced by internal electric fields and enhanced by external fields.

The progress on multi‐wavelength quantum cascade laser arrays in the mid‐infrared is reviewed, which are a powerful, robust and versatile source for next‐generation spectroscopy and stand‐off detection systems. Various approaches for the array elements are discussed, from conventional distributed‐feedback lasers over master‐oscillator power‐amplifier devices to tapered oscillators, and the performances of the different array types are compared. The challenges associated with reliably achieving single‐mode operation at deterministic wavelengths for each laser element in combination with a uniform distribution of high output power across the array are discussed. An overview of the range of applications benefiting from the quantum cascade laser approach is given. The distinct and crucial advantages of arrays over external cavity quantum cascade lasers as tunable single‐mode sources in the mid‐infrared are discussed. Spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging demonstrations by quantum cascade laser arrays are reviewed.

A diode‐pumped Yb:YAG MOPA‐System for the unprecedented generation of transform limited pulses with variable pulse duration in the range between 10 ps and 100 ps is presented. First applications relying on unique pulse parameters as modulation free spectrum, tunability and coherence length, namely the direct laser interference patterning (DLIP) and laser cooling of stored relativistic ion beams are highlighted. Pulses are generated by a mode‐locked fs‐oscillator while the spectral bandwidth is narrowed in the subsequent regenerative amplifier by an intra‐cavity grating monochromator. Two alternative booster amplifiers were added to increase the pulse energy to 100 μJ and 10 mJ, respectively.

Two hundred years after Malus' discovery of optical anisotropy, the study of polarization‐driven optical effects is as active as ever, generating interest in new phenomena and potential applications. However, in ultrafast optics, the influence of polarization is frequently overlooked being considered as either detrimental or negligible. Here we demonstrate that spatio‐temporal couplings, which are inherent for ultrafast laser systems with chirped‐pulse amplification, accumulate in multi‐pulse irradiation and lead to a strongly anisotropic light‐matter interaction. Our results identify angular dispersion in the focus as the origin for the polarization dependence in modification, yielding an increase in modification strength. With tight focusing (NA ≥ ∼0.4), this non‐paraxial effect leads to a manifestation of spatio‐temporal couplings in photo‐induced modification. We devise a practical way to control the polarization dependence and exploit it as a new degree of freedom in tailoring laser‐induced modification in transparent material. A near‐focus, non‐paraxial field structure analysis of an optical beam provides insight on the origin of the polarization dependent modification. However, single pulse non‐paraxial corrected calculations are not sufficient to explain the phenomena confirming the experimental observations and exemplifying the need for multi‐pulse analysis.

A mid‐infrared (MIR) supercontinuum (SC) has been demonstrated in a low‐loss telluride glass fiber. The double‐cladding fiber, fabricated using a novel extrusion method, exhibits excellent transmission at 8–14 μm: < 10 dB/m in the range of 8–13.5 μm and 6 dB/m at 11 μm. Launched intense ultrashort pulsed with a central wavelength of 7 μm, the step‐index fiber generates a MIR SC spanning from ∼2.0 μm to 16 μm, for a 40‐dB spectral flatness. This is a fresh experimental demonstration to reveal that telluride glass fiber can emit across the all MIR molecular fingerprint region, which is of key importance for applications such as diagnostics, gas sensing, and greenhouse CO2 detection.

The generation of sub‐optical‐cycle, carrier–envelope phase‐stable light pulses is one of the frontiers of ultrafast optics. The two key ingredients for sub‐cycle pulse generation are bandwidths substantially exceeding one octave and accurate control of the spectral phase. These requirements are very challenging to satisfy with a single laser beam, and thus intense research activity is currently devoted to the coherent synthesis of pulses generated by separate sources. In this review we discuss the conceptual schemes and experimental tools that can be employed for the generation, amplification, control, and combination of separate light pulses. The main techniques for the spectrotemporal characterization of the synthesized fields are also described. We discuss recent implementations of coherent waveform synthesis: from the first demonstration of a single‐cycle optical pulse by the addition of two pulse trains derived from a fiber laser, to the coherent combination of the outputs from optical parametric chirped‐pulse amplifiers.

Wide‐angle, polarization‐independent structural reflective colors from both directions based on a one‐dimensional photonic crystal are demonstrated. Our device produces a distinct and saturated color with high angular tolerant performance up to ±70° for any polarization state of an incident light wave, which is highly desirable for a broad range of research areas. Moreover, the purity of the color and luminous intensity of the proposed device are improved as compared to conventional colorant‐based color filters and colloidal glasses. The present approach may have the potential to replace existing color filters and pigments and pave the way for various applications, including color displays and image sensor technologies.

A compact 64‐channel hybrid demultiplexer based on silicon‐on‐insulator nanowires is proposed and demonstrated experimentally to enable wavelength‐division‐multiplexing and mode‐division‐multiplexing simultaneously in order to realize an ultra‐large capacity on‐chip optical‐interconnect link. The present hybrid demultiplexer consists of a 4‐channel mode multiplexer constructed with cascaded asymmetrical directional‐couplers and two bi‐directional 17 × 17 arrayed‐waveguide gratings (AWGs) with 16 channels. Here each bi‐directional AWG is equivalent as two identical 1 × 16 AWGs. The measured excess loss and the crosstalk for the monolithically integrated 64‐channel hybrid demultiplexer are about ‐5 dB and ‐14 dB, respectively. Better performance can be achieved by minimizing the imperfections (particularly in AWGs) during the fabrication processes.

The coupling of atomic and photonic resonances serves as an important tool for enhancing light‐matter interactions and enables the observation of multitude of fascinating and fundamental phenomena. Here, by exploiting the platform of atomic‐cladding wave guides, the resonant coupling of rubidium vapor and an atomic cladding micro ring resonator is experimentally demonstrated. Specifically, cavity‐atom coupling in the form of Fano resonances having a distinct dependency on the relative frequency detuning between the photonic and the atomic resonances is observed. Moreover, significant enhancement of the efficiency of all optical switching in the V‐type pump‐probe scheme is demonstrated. The coupled system of micro‐ring resonator and atomic vapor is a promising building block for a variety of light vapor experiments, as it offers a very small footprint, high degree of integration and extremely strong confinement of light and vapor. As such it may be used for important applications, such as all optical switching, dispersion engineering (e.g. slow and fast light) and metrology, as well as for the observation of important effects such as strong coupling, and Purcell enhancement.

III‐nitride light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) are ultimately limited in performance due to parasitic Auger recombination. For LEDs, the consequences are poor efficiencies at high current densities; for LDs, the consequences are high thresholds and limited efficiencies. Here, we present arguments for III‐nitride quantum dots (QDs) as active regions for both LEDs and LDs, to circumvent Auger recombination and achieve efficiencies at higher current densities that are not possible with quantum wells. QD‐based LDs achieve gain and thresholds at lower carrier densities before Auger recombination becomes appreciable. QD‐based LEDs achieve higher efficiencies at higher currents because of higher spontaneous emission rates and reduced Auger recombination. The technical challenge is to control the size distribution and volume of the QDs to realize these benefits. If constructed properly, III‐nitride light‐emitting devices with QD active regions have the potential to outperform quantum well light‐emitting devices, and enable an era of ultra‐efficient solid‐state lighting.

Nonlinear wave mixing in mesoscopic silicon structures is a fundamental nonlinear process with broad impact and applications. Silicon nanowire waveguides, in particular, have large third‐order Kerr nonlinearity, enabling salient and abundant four‐wave‐mixing dynamics and functionalities. Besides the Kerr effect, in silicon waveguides two‐photon absorption generates high free‐carrier densities, with corresponding fifth‐order nonlinearity in the forms of free‐carrier dispersion and free‐carrier absorption. However, whether these fifth‐order free‐carrier nonlinear effects can lead to six‐wave‐mixing dynamics still remains an open question until now. Here we report the demonstration of free‐carrier‐induced six‐wave mixing in silicon nanowires. Unique features, including inverse detuning dependence of six‐wave‐mixing efficiency and its higher sensitivity to pump power, are originally observed and verified by analytical prediction and numerical modeling. Additionally, asymmetric sideband generation is observed for different laser detunings, resulting from the phase‐sensitive interactions between free‐carrier six‐wave‐mixing and Kerr four‐wave‐mixing dynamics. These discoveries provide a new path for nonlinear multi‐wave interactions in nanoscale platforms.

Conventional techniques for transverse mode discrimination rely on introducing differential external losses to the different competing mode sets, enforcing single‐mode operation at the expense of additional losses to the desirable mode. We show how a parity‐time (PT) symmetric design approach can be employed to achieve single mode lasing in transversely multi‐moded microring resonators. In this type of system, mode selectivity is attained by judiciously utilizing the exceptional point dynamics arising from a complex interplay of gain and loss. The proposed scheme is versatile, robust to deviations from PT symmetry such as caused by fabrication inaccuracies or pump inhomogeneities, and enables a stable operation considerably above threshold while maintaining spatial and spectral purity. The experimental results presented here were obtained in InP‐based semiconductor microring arrangements and pave the way towards an entirely new class of chip‐scale semiconductor lasers that harness gain/loss contrast as a primary mechanism of mode selectivity.

Here we report on the hybrid nanostructures where a single ZnS nanobelt was half‐covered with an aluminum (Al) film, which is an ideal platform for studying the second‐harmonic generation (SHG) enhancement effects of the Al coating. It was fabricated by the lift‐off process and allowed for the accurate comparison of the SHG intensity between the Al‐covered and the same bare ZnS nanobelt under consistent test conditions. The results indicate that the Al coating in the hybrid nanostructures not only confines the pumping laser in the ZnS effectively, but also concentrates the emitted SHG signal greatly, increasing the signal collection efficiency. By the combination of these two effects, ∼60 times enhancement of the SHG intensity is achieved at the optimized geometry size (width and thickness) of the ZnS nanobelts. The Al‐based hybrid nanostructures open up new possibilities for low‐cost, highly efficient and directional coherent nanolight sources at short wavelengths.

Since the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) has received a great deal of attention because of its capability of guiding light within the subwavelength scale, finding methods for arbitrary SPP field generation has been a significant issue in the area of integrated optics. To achieve such a goal, it will be necessary to generate a plasmonic complex field. In this paper, we propose a novel method for generating a plasmonic complex field propagating with arbitrary curvatures by using double‐lined distributed nanoslits. As a unit cell, two facing nanoslits are used for tuning both the amplitude and the phase of excited SPPs as a function of their tilted angles. For verification of the proposed design rule, the authors experimentally demonstrate some plasmonic caustic curves and Airy plasmons.

Nanostructures that feature nonreciprocal light transmission are highly desirable building blocks for realizing photonic integrated circuits. Here, a simple and ultracompact photonic‐crystal structure, where a waveguide is coupled to a single nanocavity, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, showing very efficient optical diode functionality. The key novelty of the structure is the use of cavity‐enhanced material nonlinearities in combination with spatial symmetry breaking and a Fano resonance to realize nonreciprocal propagation effects at ultralow power and with good wavelength tunability. The nonlinearity of the device relies on ultrafast carrier dynamics, rather than the thermal effects usually considered, allowing the demonstration of nonreciprocal operation at a bit‐rate of 10 Gbit s−1 with a low energy consumption of 4.5 fJ bit−1.

Near‐field optical microscopy techniques provide information on the amplitude and phase of local fields in samples of interest in nanooptics. However, the information on the near field is typically obtained by converting it into propagating far fields where the signal is detected. This is the case, for instance, in polarization‐resolved scattering‐type scanning near‐field optical microscopy (s‐SNOM), where a sharp dielectric tip scatters the local near field off the antenna to the far field. Up to now, basic models have interpreted S‐ and P‐polarized maps obtained in s‐SNOM as directly proportional to the in‐plane ( or ) and out‐of‐plane () near‐field components of the antenna, respectively, at the position of the probing tip. Here, a novel model that includes the multiple‐scattering process of the probing tip and the nanoantenna is developed, with use of the reciprocity theorem of electromagnetism. This novel theoretical framework provides new insights into the interpretation of s‐SNOM near‐field maps: the model reveals that the fields detected by polarization‐resolved interferometric s‐SNOM do not correlate with a single component of the local near field, but rather with a complex combination of the different local near‐field components at each point (, and ). Furthermore, depending on the detection scheme (S‐ or P‐polarization), a different scaling of the scattered fields as a function of the local near‐field enhancement is obtained. The theoretical findings are corroborated by s‐SNOM experiments which map the near field of linear and gap plasmonic antennas. This new interpretation of nanoantenna s‐SNOM maps as a complex‐valued combination of vectorial local near fields is crucial to correctly understand scattering‐type near‐field microscopy measurements as well as to interpret the signals obtained in field‐enhanced spectroscopy.
