Well‐defined ABC triblock copolymers based on two hydrophilic blocks, A and C, and a hydrophobic block B are synthesized and their self‐assembly behavior is investigated. Interestingly, at the same solvent, concentration, pH, and temperature, different shape micelles are observed, spherical and worm‐like micelles, depending on the preparation method. Specifically, spherical micelles are observed with bulk rehydration while both spherical and worm‐like micelles are observed with film rehydration.

Hierarchical semicrystalline block copolymer nanoparticles are produced in a segmented gas‐liquid microfluidic reactor with top‐down control of multiscale structural features, including nanoparticle morphologies, sizes, and internal crystallinities. Control of multiscale structure on disparate length scales by a single control variable (flow rate) enables tailoring of drug delivery nanoparticle function including release rates.

Herein, for rate‐tunable controlled release, the authors report a new facile method to prepare multiresponsive amphiphilic supramolecular diblock copolymers via the cooperative complexation between a water‐soluble pillar[10]arene and paraquat‐containing polymers in water. This supramolecular diblock copolymer can self‐assemble into multiresponsive polymeric micelles at room temperature in water. The resultant micelles can be further used in the controlled release of small molecules with tunable release rates depending on the type of single stimulus and the combination of various stimuli.

In a recent publication, Nakamura and co‐workers studied the termination mechanism in the radical polymerization of acrylates. Contrary to conventional thinking, their conclusion is that termination is overwhelmingly by disproportionation. This finding impacts on a large body of the previous work in the polymerization of acrylic monomers which this work seeks to address. Analysis of the molecular weight distribution of acrylic polymers obtained under different polymerization conditions shows that termination by combination is the more probable mechanism for mutual termination of secondary radicals. It is proposed that in the experiments conducted by Nakamura and co‐workers, backbiting plays a key role and their experimental data are reinterpreted, showing that they are more revealing with respect to the mode of termination of the midchain radical produced by backbiting, than to bimolecular termination of secondary radicals.

Polydopamine‐based coatings are fabricated via an electric field‐accelerating and ‐directing codeposition process of polydopamine with charged polymers such as polycations, polyanions, and polyzwitterions. The coatings are uniform and smooth on various substrates, especially on those adhesion‐resistant materials including poly(vinylidene fluoride) and poly(tetrafluoroethylene) membranes. Moreover, this electric field‐directed deposition method can be applied to facilely prepare Janus membranes with asymmetric chemistry and wettability.

Hierarchical self‐assembly of transient composite hydrogels is demonstrated through a two‐step, orthogonal strategy using nanoparticle tectons interconnected through metal–ligand coordination complexes. The resulting materials are highly tunable with moduli and viscosities spanning many orders of magnitude, and show promising self‐healing properties, while maintaining complete optical transparency.

Poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA)‐based brush poly(phosphoamidate)s are successfully synthesized by a combination of ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) following either a commutative two‐step procedure or a straightforward one‐pot process using Grubbs ruthenium‐based catalysts for tandem catalysis. Compared with the traditional polymerization method, combining ROMP and ATRP in a one‐pot process allows the preparation of brush copolymers characterized by a relatively moderate molecular weight distribution and quantitative conversion of monomer. Moreover, the surface morphologies and aggregation behaviors of these polymers are studied by AFM and TEM measurements.

A superhydrophobic polythiophene film (SSPTH) is prepared by double‐layer electrodeposition on an indium tin oxide (ITO) glass electrode. This film shows not only electroresponsive superhydrophobic features, but also high transparency compared with the usual polythiophene film. The water‐droplet adhesion on the SSPTH film can be switched between sliding and pinned states under the applied potential. More intresetingly, the change in water‐droplet adhesion results in a change in cell adsorption on the SSPTH film. The low‐adhesion (dedoped) SSPTH films can prevent Hela cell adhesion, whereas high‐adhesion (doped) SSPTH films can promote Hela cell adsorption. This controllable cell adhesion on a SSPTH film may be developed as a smart biointerface material.

A novel route for the synthesis of poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐polystyrene copolymer, starting from commercially available poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether and azido terminated polystyrene prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization and subsequent nucleophilic substitution, is applied with simplicity and high efficiency. The combination of photoinduced copper (I)‐catalyzed alkyne‐azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) and ketene chemistry reactions proceeds either simultaneously or sequentially in a one‐pot procedure under near‐visible light irradiation. In both cases, excellent block copolymer formations are achieved, with an average molecular weight of around 7000 g mo1−1 and a polydispersity index of 1.20.

A double‐layer hollow fiber is fabricated where an isoporous surface of polystyrene‐block‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine) is fixed on a support layer by co‐extrusion. Due to the sulfonation of the support layer material, delamination of the two layers is suppressed without increasing the number of subsequent processing steps for isoporous composite membrane formation. Electron microscope‐energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy images unveil the existence of a high sulfur concentration in the interfacial region by which in‐process H‐bond formation between the layers is evidenced. For the very first time, our study reports a facile method to fabricate a sturdy isoporous double‐layer hollow fiber.

A new and easy method of stimuli‐triggered growth and removal of a bioreducible nanoshell on nanoparticles is reported. The results show that pH or temperature could induce the aggregation of disulfide‐contained branched polymers at the surface of nanoparticles; subsequently, the aggregated polymers could undergo intermolecular disulfide exchange to cross‐link the aggregated polymers, forming a bioreducible polymer shell around nanoparticles. When these nanoparticles with a polymer shell are treated with glutathione (GSH) or d,l ‐dithiothreitol (DTT), the polymer shell could be easily removed from the nanoparticles. The potential application of this method is demonstrated by easily growing and removing a bioreducible shell from liposomes, and improvement of in vivo gene transfection activity of liposomes with a bioreducible PEG shell.

Enzymes are attractive, “green” alternatives to chemical catalysts within the industrial sector, but their robustness to environmental conditions needs optimizing. Here, an enzyme is tagged chemically and recombinantly with a self‐assembling peptide that allows the conjugate to spontaneously assemble with pure peptide to form β‐sheet‐rich nanofibers decorated with tethered enzyme. Above a critical concentration, these fibers entangle and form a 3D hydrogel. The immobilized enzyme catalyzes chemical transformations and critically its stability is increased significantly where it retains activity after exposure to high temperatures (90 °C) and long storage times (up to 12 months).

A novel strategy for the incorporation of carbon dioxide into polymers is introduced. For this purpose, the Ugi five‐component condensation (Ugi‐5CC) of an alcohol, CO2, an amine, an aldehyde, and an isocyanide is used to obtain step‐growth monomers. Polymerization via thiol‐ene reaction or polycondensation with diphenyl carbonate gives diversely substituted polyurethanes or alternating polyurethane‐polycarbonates, respectively. Furthermore, the application of 1,12‐diaminododecane and 1,6‐diisocyanohexane as bifunctional components in the Ugi‐5CC directly results in the corresponding polyamide bearing methyl carbamate side chains ( = 19 850 g mol−1). The latter polymer is further converted into the corresponding polyhydantoin in a highly straightforward fashion.

A thiofunctional thiazolidine is introduced as a new low‐molar‐mass building block for the introduction of cysteine residues via a thiol‐ene reaction. Allyl‐functional polyglycidol (PG) is used as a model polymer to demonstrate polymer‐analogue functionalization through reaction with the unsaturated side‐chains. A modified trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBSA) assay is used for the redox‐insensitive quantification and a precise final cysteine content can be predetermined at the polymerization stage. Native chemical ligation at cysteine‐functional PG is performed as a model reaction for a chemoselective peptide modification of this polymer. The three‐step synthesis of the thiofunctional thiazolidine reactant, together with the standard thiol‐ene coupling and the robust quantification assay, broadens the toolbox for thiol‐ene chemistry and offers a generic and straightforward approach to cysteine‐functional materials.

Improving thermal stability of TEMPO‐oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNs) is a major challenge for the development and preparation of new nanocomposites. However, thermal degradation of TOCNs occurs at 220 °C. The present study reports a simple way to improve thermal stability of TOCNs by the heat‐induced conversion of ionic bonds to amide bonds. Coupling amine‐terminated polyethylene glycol to the TOCNs is performed through ionic bond formation. Films are produced from the dispersions by the casting method. Infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis confirm conversion of ionic bonds to amide bonds for the modified TOCN samples after heating. As a result, improvement of TOCNs' thermal stability by up to 90 °C is successfully achieved.

A convenient synthesis of sustainable polyamides, which contain side groups and stereocenters, starting from the biobased small terpene β‐pinene is reported. The polyamides, which are obtained via the pinene‐based lactam via ring‐opening polymerization, show excellent thermal properties, rendering this approach very interesting for the utilization of novel biobased and structurally significant high‐performance polymers and materials. Polymer masses and yields are shown to be dependent on different parameters, and the stereoinformation of the lactam monomer can thus be transferred into the polymer chain. In addition, another lactam side product can also be transformed to polyamides.

The excellent properties of elastomers are exploited to trigger wrinkling instabilities in curved shells. Micro‐ and nano‐fibres are produced by electrospinning and UV irradiated: each fibre consists of a soft core and a stiff outer half‐shell. Upon solvent de‐swelling, the fibres curl because the shell and the core have different natural lengths. Wrinkling only starts after the fibre has attained a well‐defined helical shape. A simple analytical model is proposed to find the curling curvature and wrinkle wavelength, as well as the transition between the “curling” and “wrinkling” regimes. This new instability resembles that found in the tendrils of climbing plants as they dry and lignify.

A triptycene‐based microporous organic polymer (MOP) in which 2,6‐bis(benzimidazol‐2‐yl)pyridine (bbp) is incorporated as linkage and coordination site is designed and synthesized. Pd(II) ions are further immobilized in this MOP through the coordination interactions between Pd(II) ion and nitrogen atoms of bbp. The resulting material shows high stability and exhibits excellent heterogeneously catalytic activity for the Suzuki–Miyaura cross‐coupling reaction. Its high efficiency can be maintained after being reused for a number of cycles.

A special artificial spider silk is presented which is fabricated by using both an elastic polymer and a fiber, and the water collection behavior is investigated. Through exerting tension in varying degree, the length of the three‐phase contact line (TCL) and the area of spindle knot can be regulated readily, which makes a great contribution to the improvement of collecting efficiency and water‐hanging ability. The water‐hanging ability can be predicted at a given stretching ratio according to the given expression of the TCL. As a result, liquid capture or release of distinct measure can be achieved via exerting tension. This research is helpful to design smart materials for developing applications in fogwater collection, dehumidification, high‐efficiency humidity control, and controllable adhesion.

Currently available methods for synthesis of polymeric nanocapsules only offer limited control over the shell thickness, even though it is an important parameter for various applications. Furthermore, suitable methods to critically measure this parameter in a facile way are still nonexistent. Here, lab‐scale small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) is utilized to in situ measure the evolution of shell thickness during nanocapsule synthesis via inverse miniemulsion periphery reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization (IMEPP). The measured shell thickness is consistent with estimates from the commonly used transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique. Moreover, the individual thicknesses of two concentric shells comprising different polymeric materials (the outer shell formed via IMEPP chain extension of the inner shell) can be determined, thus further demonstrating the versatility of this approach.
