On the basis of the local SU (2) symmetry of the Heisenberg model, we show that the model, in a continuum limit, reduces to a problem of massless fermions coupled to an SU(2) gauge field in three space-time dimensions. The effective gauge field action changes by ± π ⦶ n ⦶ under a large gauge transformation with winding number n. To restore the gauge invariance, a parity- nonconserving, topological term is needed in the effective action. The physical implications are conjectured.  相似文献

Dimensional regularization is used to give a simple treatment of broken conformal Ward identities. The method reproduces the known answers for standard theories. In addition it permits a derivation of the relevant identities for non-Abelian gauge theories which have not been obtained by other means. For the latter class of theories asymptotic scale invariance is found not to imply asymptotic conformal invariance for gauge variant Green functions. This is due to two gauge dependent insertions occurring in the identities. One can be predicted classically, whereas the other contains a new term dependent on Faddeev-Popov ghosts.  相似文献

For supersymmetric gauge theories a consistent regularization scheme that preserves supersymmetry and gauge invariance is not known. In this article we tackle this problem for supersymmetric QED within the framework of algebraic renormalization. For practical calculations, a non-invariant regularization scheme may be used together with counterterms from all power-counting renormalizable interactions. From the Slavnov–Taylor identity, expressing gauge invariance, supersymmetry and translational invariance, simple symmetry conditions are derived that are important in a twofold respect: they establish exact relations between physical quantities that are valid to all orders, and they provide a powerful tool for the practical determination of the counterterms. We perform concrete one-loop calculations in dimensional regularization, where supersymmetry is spoiled at the regularized level, and show how the counterterms necessary to restore supersymmetry can be read off easily. In addition, a specific example is given how the supersymmetry transformations in one-loop order are modified by non-local terms. Received: 23 July 1999 / Published online: 14 October 1999  相似文献

We revisit quantum gravitational contributions to quantum gauge field theories in the gauge condition independent Vilkovisky-DeWitt formalism based on the background field method. With the advantage of Landau-DeWitt gauge,we explicitly obtain the gauge condition independent result for the quadratically divergent gravitational corrections to gauge couplings.By employing,in a general way,a scheme-independent regularization method that can preserve both gauge invariance and original divergent behavior of integrals,we show that the resulting gauge coupling is power-law running and asymptotically free. The regularization scheme dependence is clarified by comparing with results obtained by other methods. The loop regularization scheme is found to be applicable for a consistent calculation.  相似文献

We apply the N = 4 harmonic superspace with USp(4) harmonic variables for describing the N = 4 SYM low-energy effective action. Scale invariance and gauge symmetry fix the leading term in the low-energy effective action uniquely, up to a constant. The value of the remaining constant can be fixed by the topological quantization condition for the Wess-Zumino term which is present in the component structure of this action.  相似文献

We study an exactly solvable two-dimensional model which mimics the basic features of the standard model. This model combines chiral coupling with an infrared behavior which resembles low energy QCD. This is done by adding a Podolsky higher-order derivative term in the gauge field to the Lagrangian of the usual chiral Schwinger model. We adopt a finite temperature regularization procedure in order to calculate the non-trivial fermionic Jacobian and obtain the photon and fermion propagators, first at zero temperature and then at finite temperature in the imaginary and real time formalisms. Both singular and non-singular cases, corresponding to the choice of the regularization parameter, are treated. In the nonsingular case there is a tachyonic mode as usual in a higher order derivative theory, however in the singular case there is no tachyonic excitation in the spectrum.  相似文献

Gauge theory of gravity is formulated based on principle of local gauge invariance. Because the model hasstrict local gravitational gauge symmetry, and gauge theory of gravity is a perturbatively renormalizable quantum model. However, in the original model, all gauge gravitons are massless. We want to ask whether there exist massive gravitonsin Nature. In this paper, we will propose a gauge model with massive gravitons. The mass term of gravitational gaugefield is introduced into the theory without violating the strict local gravitational gauge symmetry. Massive gravitons canbe considered to be possible origin of dark energy and dark matter in the Universe.  相似文献

We show that in order for a U(1) gauge theory with a Fayet-Illiopoulos term to be consistently coupled to supergravity, preserving gauge invariance, the superpotential must be R invariant. A supersymmetric cosmological term and therefore an explicit mass-like term for the gravitino is forbidden by gauge invariance. This result severely constrains the possible models for non-gravitational interactions. We comment on possible mass term the gauginos induced by gravitational effects.  相似文献

The higher order corrections to the two-dimensional nonlinear σ-model for the heterotic string are considered. The divergent parts of the effective action are calculated explicitly to two-loop order in the presence of arbitrary background gauge fields. It is shown that the full gauge Chern-Simons term appears in the divergent terms. We also discuss its relevance to the equations of motion for the massless modes of the heterotic string with emphasis on the local gauge invariance of the heterotic string theory.  相似文献

We show how the T-duality between D-branes is realized (i) on p-brane solutions (p = 0,…,9) of IIA/IIB supergravity and (ii) on the D-brane actions (p = 0,…, 3) that act as source terms for the p-brane solutions. We point out that the presence of a cosmological constant in the IIA theory leads, by the requirement of gauge invariance, to a topological mass term for the worldvolume gauge field in the 2-brane case.  相似文献

A regularization method named the intrinsic loop regularization is proposed by WANG and GUO. Here, we apply it to the quantum electrodynamics, we find this method can remain gauge invariance very well.  相似文献

In relativistic classical and quantum mechanics with Poincaré-invariant parameter, particle worldlines are traced out by the evolution of spacetime events. The formulation of a covariant canonical framework for the evolving events leads to a dynamical theory in which mass conservation is demoted from a priori constraint to the status of conserved Noether current for a certain class of interactions. In pre-Maxwell electrodynamics—the local gauge theory associated with this framework —events induce five local off-shell fields, which mediate interactions between instantaneous events, not between the worldlines which represent entire particle histories. The fifth field, required to compensate for dependence of gauge transformations on the evolution parameter, enables the exchange of mass between particles and fields. In the equilibrium limit, these pre-Maxwell fields are pushed onto the zero-mass shell, but during interactions there is no mechanism regulating the mass that photons may acquire, even when event trajectories evolve far into the spacelike region. This feature of the off-shell formalism requires the application of some ad hoc mechanism for controlling the photon mass in two opposite physical domains: the low energy motion of a charged event in classical Coulomb scattering, and the renormalization of off-shell quantum electrodynamics. In this paper, we discuss a nonlocal, higher derivative correction to the photon kinetic term, which provides regulation of the photon mass in a manner which preserves the gauge invariance and Poincaré covariance of the original theory. We demonstrate that the inclusion of this term is equivalent to an earlier solution to the classical Coulomb problem, and that the resulting quantum field theory is renormalized.  相似文献

A continuum regularization of Yang-Mills theory with a possible non-perturbative interpretation is introduced in the euclidean formalism. The regularization preserves Lorentz covariance and gauge invariance and involves not only a regularization of the action but also a regularization of the functional measure in terms of a nuclear-riemannian structure of the space of gauge orbits.  相似文献

The Higgs decay H →γγ due to the virtual W-loop effect is revisited in the unitary gauge by using the symmetry-preserving and divergent-behavior-preserving loop regularization method, which is realized in the fourdimensional space-time without changing original theory.Though the one-loop amplitude of H →γγ is finite as the Higgs boson in the standard model has no direct interaction with the massless photons at tree level,it involves both tensor-type and scalar-type divergent integrals which can in general destroy the gauge invariance without imposing a proper regularization scheme to make them well-defined.As the loop regularization scheme can ensure the consistency conditions between the regularized tensor-type and scalar-type divergent irreducible loop integrals to preserve gauge invariance,we explicitly show the absence of decoupling in the limit M W /M H → 0 and obtain a result agreeing exactly with the earlier one in the literature. We then clarify the discrepancy of the earlier result from the recent one obtained by R.Gastmans,S.L.Wu and T.T.Wu.The advantage of calculation in the unitary gauge becomes manifest in that the non-decoupling arises from the longitudinal contribution of the W gauge boson.  相似文献

The axial anomaly of lattice abelian gauge theory on a hyper-cubic regular lattice in arbitrary even dimensions is investigated by applying the method of exterior differential calculus. The topological invariance, gauge invariance and locality of the axial anomaly determine the explicit form of the topological part. The anomaly is obtained up to a multiplicative constant for finite lattice spacing and can be interpreted as the Chern character of the abelian lattice gauge theory.  相似文献

We provide the basis for a rigorous construction of the Schwinger functions of the pure SU(2) Yang-Mills field theory in four dimensions (in the trivial topological sector) with a fixed infrared cutoff but no ultraviolet cutoff, in a regularized axial gauge. The construction exploits the positivity of the axial gauge at large field. For small fields, a different gauge, more suited to perturbative computations is used; this gauge and the corresponding propagator depends on large background fields of lower momenta. The crucial point is to control (in a non-perturbative way) the combined effect of the functional integrals over small field regions associated to a large background field and of the counterterms which restore the gauge invariance broken by the cutoff. We prove that this combined effect is stabilizing if we use cutoffs of a certain type in momentum space. We check the validity of the construction by showing that Slavnov identities (which express infinitesimal gauge invariance) do hold non-perturbatively.  相似文献

We explore the connection between perturbative and non-perturbative (path-integral) approaches to the axial anomaly. In particular, we show how the Jacobian associated with the fermionic measure corresponding to local axial transformations may be calculated directly from shift-of-integration-variable surface terms in four Euclidean dimensions. No regularization (explicit parametrization of UV infinities) is required in this approach, but invariance of the Jacobian under vector gauge transformations (i.e. preregularization) is required to remove a variable-of-integration ambiguity within the expression for the Jacobian of the fermionic measure.  相似文献

The fermion number current is evaluated to leading order in the derivative expansion for chiral fermions in the background of arbitrary Higgs and chiral gauge fields. This current is given by the gauge topological current plus a total divergence term. The total divergence term is absent in Weinberg-Salam theory with one scalar Higgs doublet, even for an arbitrary mass matrix, but appears when several Higgs doublets are present.  相似文献

We study renormalizability aspects of the spectral action for the Yang–Mills system on a flat 4-dimensional background manifold, focusing on its asymptotic expansion. Interpreting the latter as a higher-derivative gauge theory, a power-counting argument shows that it is superrenormalizable. We determine the counterterms at one-loop using zeta function regularization in a background field gauge and establish their gauge invariance. Consequently, the corresponding field theory can be renormalized by a simple shift of the spectral function appearing in the spectral action.  相似文献
