Diperfect graphs
Gallai and Milgram have shown that the vertices of a directed graph, with stability number α(G), can be covered by exactly α(G) disjoint paths. However, the various proofs of this result do not imply the existence of a maximum stable setS and of a partition of the vertex-set into paths μ1, μ2, ..., μk such tht |μiS|=1 for alli. Later, Gallai proved that in a directed graph, the maximum number of vertices in a path is at least equal to the chromatic number; here again, we do not know if there exists an optimal coloring (S 1,S 2, ...,S k) and a path μ such that |μ ∩S i|=1 for alli. In this paper we show that many directed graphs, like the perfect graphs, have stronger properties: for every maximal stable setS there exists a partition of the vertex set into paths which meet the stable set in only one point. Also: for every optimal coloring there exists a path which meets each color class in only one point. This suggests several conjecties similar to the perfect graph conjecture. In 1963, Tibor Gallai [9] asked whether every strongly connected directed graph D is spanned by α directed circuits, where α is the stability of D. We give a proof of this conjecture.  相似文献

We consider random graphs withn labelled vertices in which edges are chosen independently and with probabilityc/n. We prove that almost every random graph of this kind contains a path of length ≧(1 −α(c))n where α(c) is an exponentially decreasing function ofc. LetS be a set ofn non-collinear points in the Euclidean plane. It will be shown here that for some point ofS the number ofconnecting lines through it exceedsc · n. This gives a partial solution to an old problem of Dirac and Motzkin. We also prove the following conjecture of Erdős: If any straight line contains at mostn−x points ofS, then the number of connecting lines determined byS is greater thanc · x · n. A graphG is said to bek-critical if it has chromatic numberk, but every proper subgraph ofG has a (k–1)-coloring. Gallai asked whether every largek-critical graph contains many (k–1)-critical subgraphs. We provide some information concerning this question and some related questions.  相似文献

Compactness results in extremal graph theory   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Let L be a given family of so called prohibited graphs. Let ex (n, L) denote the maximum number of edges a simple graph of ordern can have without containing subgraphs from L. A typical extremal graph problem is to determine ex (n, L), or at least, find good bounds on it. Results asserting that for a given L there exists a much smaller L*⫅L for which ex (n, L) ≈ ex (n, L*) will be calledcompactness results. The main purpose of this paper is to prove some compactness results for the case when L consists of cycles. One of our main tools will be finding lower bounds on the number of pathsP k+1 in a graph ofn vertices andE edges., witch is, in fact, a “super-saturated” version of a wellknown theorem of Erdős and Gallai. LetG be a Lie group,H a closed subgroup,L a unitary representation ofH andU L the corresponding induced representation onG. The main result of this paper, extending Ol’ŝanskii’s version of the Frobenius reciprocity theorem, expresses the intertwining number ofU L and an irreducible unitary representationV ofG in terms ofL and the restriction ofV toH.  相似文献

LetX be a finite set ofn elements and ℓ a family ofk-subsets ofX. Suppose that for a given setL of non-negative integers all the pairwise intersections of members of ℓ have cardinality belonging toL. Letm(n, k, L) denote the maximum possible cardinality of ℓ. This function was investigated by many authors, but to determine its exact value or even its correct order of magnitude appears to be hopeless. In this paper we investigate the case |L|=3. We give necessary and sufficient conditions form(n, k, L)=O(n) andm(n, k, L)≧O(n 2), and show that in some casesm(n, k, L)=O(n 3/2), which is quite surprising.  相似文献

Thescore vector of a labeled digraph is the vector of out-degrees of its vertices. LetG be a finite labeled undirected graph without loops, and let σ(G) be the set of distinct score vectors arising from all possible orientations ofG. Let ϕ(G) be the set of subgraphs ofG which are forests of labeled trees. We display a bijection between σ(G) and ϕ(G). Supported in part by ONR Contract N00014-76-C-0366.  相似文献

LetG be a reductive group over a finite fieldk of a characteristicp. Π:G k → AutU is an irreducible representation ofG in “a general position”. Springer formulated a conjecture about values of the character of Π on unipotent elements. This conjecture is proved in the article.  相似文献

Cycles through specified vertices of a graph   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We prove that ifS is a set ofk−1 vertices in ak-connected graphG, then the cycles throughS generate the cycle space ofG. Moreover, whenk≧3, each cycle ofG can be expressed as the sum of an odd number of cycles throughS. On the other hand, ifS is a set ofk vertices, these conclusions do not necessarily hold, and we characterize the exceptional cases. As corollaries, we establish the existence of odd and even cycles through specified vertices and deduce the existence of long odd and even cycles in graphs of high connectivity.  相似文献

A class of graphs is vertex Ramsey if for allH there existsG such that for all partitions of the vertices ofG into two parts, one of the parts contains an induced copy ofH. Forb (T,K) is the class of graphs that induce neitherT norK. LetT(k, r) be the tree with radiusr such that each nonleaf is adjacent tok vertices farther from the root than itself. Gyárfás conjectured that for all treesT and cliquesK, there exists an integerb such that for allG in Forb(T,K), the chromatic number ofG is at mostb. Gyárfás' conjecture implies a weaker conjecture of Sauer that for all treesT and cliquesK, Forb(T,K) is not vertex Ramsey. We use techniques developed for attacking Gyárfás' conjecture to prove that for allq, r and sufficiently largek, Forb(T(k,r),K q ) is not vertex Ramsey.Research partially supported by Office of Naval Research grant N00014-90-J-1206.  相似文献

LetG be a finite group of even order, having a central element of order 2 which we denote by −1. IfG is a 2-group, letG be a maximal subgroup ofG containing −1, otherwise letG be a 2-Sylow subgroup ofG. LetH=G/{±1} andH=G/{±1}. Suppose there exists a regular extensionL 1 of ℚ(T) with Galois groupG. LetL be the subfield ofL 1 fixed byH. We make the hypothesis thatL 1 admits a quadratic extensionL 2 which is Galois overL of Galois groupG. IfG is not a 2-group we show thatL 1 then admits a quadratic extension which is Galois over ℚ(T) of Galois groupG and which can be given explicitly in terms ofL 2. IfG is a 2-group, we show that there exists an element α ε ℚ(T) such thatL 1 admits a quadratic extension which is Galois over ℚ(T) of Galois groupG if and only if the cyclic algebra (L/ℚ(T).a) splits. As an application of these results we explicitly construct several 2-groups as Galois groups of regular extensions of ℚ(T).  相似文献

The chromatic number of the product of two 4-chromatic graphs is 4   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
For any graphG and numbern≧1 two functionsf, g fromV(G) into {1, 2, ...,n} are adjacent if for all edges (a, b) ofG, f(a)g(b). The graph of all such functions is the colouring graph ℒ(G) ofG. We establish first that χ(G)=n+1 implies χ(ℒ(G))=n iff χ(G ×H)=n+1 for all graphsH with χ(H)≧n+1. Then we will prove that indeed for all 4-chromatic graphsG χ(ℒ(G))=3 which establishes Hedetniemi’s [3] conjecture for 4-chromatic graphs. This research was supported by NSERC grant A7213  相似文献

Younger conjectured that for everyk there is ag(k) such that any digraphG withoutk vertex disjoint cycles contains a setX of at mostg(k) vertices such thatG–X has no directed cycles. Gallai had previously conjectured this result fork=1. We prove this conjecture for planar digraphs. Specifically, we show that ifG is a planar digraph withoutk vertex disjoint directed cycles, thenG contains a set of at mostO(klog(k)log(log(k))) vertices whose removal leaves an acyclic digraph. The work also suggests a conjecture concerning an extension of Vizing's Theorem for planar graphs.  相似文献

Letf(n) denote the minimal number of edges of a 3-uniform hypergraphG=(V, E) onn vertices such that for every quadrupleYV there existsYeE. Turán conjectured thatf(3k)=k(k−1)(2k−1). We prove that if Turán’s conjecture is correct then there exist at least 2 k−2 non-isomorphic extremal hypergraphs on 3k vertices.  相似文献

LetA be a maximum spanning tree andP be an arbitrary spanning tree of a connected weighted graphG. Then we prove that there exists a bijectionψ fromA/P intoP/A such that for any edgeaA/P, (P/ψ(a)) ∪a is a spanning tree ofG whose weight is greater than or equal to that ofP. We apply this theorem to some problems concerning spanning trees of a weighted graph.  相似文献

LetX G,H denote the Cayley graph of a finite groupG with respect to a subsetH. It is well-known that its automorphism groupA(XG,H) must contain the regular subgroupL G corresponding to the set of left multiplications by elements ofG. This paper is concerned with minimizing the index [A(XG,H)LG] for givenG, in particular when this index is always greater than 1. IfG is abelian but not one of seven exceptional groups, then a Cayley graph ofG exists for which this index is at most 2. Nearly complete results for the generalized dicyclic groups are also obtained.  相似文献

A non-complete graph G is called an (n,k)-graph if it is n-connected but GX is not (n−|X|+1)-connected for any X V (G) with |X|≤k. Mader conjectured that for k≥3 the graph K2k+2−(1−factor) is the unique (2k,k)-graph(up to isomorphism). Here we prove this conjecture.  相似文献
