Universality of holomorphic functions bounded on closed sets

In this note, the existence of translation-universal entire functions which are bounded on certain closed subsets is characterized in terms of topological and geometrical properties of such subsets. Corresponding results are also stated in the space of holomorphic functions on the unit disk and in the space of harmonic functions on the plane. Moreover, it is shown the existence of entire functions which are bounded on many rays and, simultaneously, are universal with respect to a prescribed infinite-order differential operator.     

Commutative and noncommutative representations of matrix-valued herglotz-nevanlinna functions

Operator realizations of matrix-valued Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions play an important and essential role in system theory, in the spectral theory of bounded nonselfadjoint operators, and in interpolation problems. Here, a generalization for realization results of the Brodskiǐ-Livsic type is given for Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions whose spectral measures are compactly supported.

Instability of the Liouville property for quasi-isometric graphs and manifolds of polynomial volume growth

In this note we construct two quasi-isometric graphs. One admits an infinite dimensional space of nonconstant bounded harmonic functions, while the other admits only constant bounded harmonic functions. Translation of the construction to manifolds answers a problem due to T. Lyons.

We give a Schwarz-Pick estimate for bounded holomorphic functions on unit ball in Cn, and generalize some early work of Schwarz-Pick estimates for bounded holomorphic functions on unit disk in C.     

Approximation by ridge functions and neural networks with a bounded number of neurons

In this paper, we consider the problem of approximation of continuous multivariate functions by neural networks with a bounded number of neurons in hidden layers. We prove the existence of single-hidden-layer networks with bounded number of neurons, which have approximation capabilities not worse than those of networks with arbitrarily many neurons. Our analysis is based on the properties of ridge functions.     

On the representation by linear superpositions

In a number of papers, Y. Sternfeld investigated the problems of representation of continuous and bounded functions by linear superpositions. In particular, he proved that if such representation holds for continuous functions, then it holds for bounded functions. We consider the same problem without involving any topology and establish a rather practical necessary and sufficient condition for representability of an arbitrary function by linear superpositions. In particular, we show that if some representation by linear superpositions holds for continuous functions, then it holds for all functions. This will lead us to the analogue of the well-known Kolmogorov superposition theorem for multivariate functions on the d-dimensional unit cube.     

Interior and exterior functions of positive Boolean functions

The interior and exterior functions of a Boolean function f were introduced in Makino and Ibaraki (Discrete Appl. Math. 69 (1996) 209–231), as stability (or robustness) measures of the f. In this paper, we investigate the complexity of two problems -INTERIOR and -EXTERIOR, introduced therein. We first answer the question about the complexity of -INTERIOR left open in Makino and Ibaraki (Discrete Appl. Math. 69 (1996) 209–231); it has no polynomial total time algorithm even if is bounded by a constant, unless P=NP. However, for positive h-term DNF functions with h bounded by a constant, problems -INTERIOR and -EXTERIOR can be solved in (input) polynomial time and polynomial delay, respectively. Furthermore, for positive k-DNF functions, -INTERIOR for two cases in which k=1, and and k are both bounded by a constant, can be solved in polynomial delay and in polynomial time, respectively.
