The orthogonal superposition of small and large amplitude oscillations upon steady shear flow of elastic fluids has been considered. Theoretical results, obtained by numerical methods, are based on the Leonov viscoelastic constitutive equation. Steady-state components, amplitudes and phase angles of the oscillatory components of the shear stress, the first and second normal stress differences as functions of shear rate, deformation amplitude and frequency have been calculated. These oscillatory components include the first and third harmonic of the shear stresses and the second harmonic of the normal stresses. In the case of small amplitude superposition, the effect of the steady shear flow upon the frequency-dependent storage modulus and dynamic viscosity has been determined and compared with experimental data available in literature for polymeric solutions. The predicted results have been found to be in fair agreement with the experimental data at low shear rates and only in qualitative agreement at high shear rates and low frequencies. A comparison of the present theoretical results has also been made with the predictions of other theories. In the case of large amplitude superposition, the effect of oscillations upon the steady shear flow characteristics has been determined, indicating that the orthogonal superposition has less influence on the steady state shear stresses and the first difference of normal stresses than the parallel superposition. However, in the orthogonal superposition a more pronounced influence has been observed for the second difference of normal stresses.

Steady-state and transient shear stress and normal stress data were obtained for four asphalts with a modified Weissenberg Rheogoniometer. Interest was specially related to non-linear behaviour at high shear-rates. The time-temperature superposition principle was found to hold in non-linear behaviour. Moreover, steady-state and transient data could be plotted as master curves irrespective of the nature of the asphalts. In particular, the master curve of steady-state viscosity could be extended to results published in the literature. In the nonlinear region the shear stress relaxation after cessation of a steady shear rate becomes a function of t only and is related to the primary normal-stress coefficient, as predicted by the Yamamoto equation. In the shear stress growth experiment an overshoot is obtained at a constant strain close to 1.5, independent of the rate of strain.

Direct numerical simulations are conducted for a Newtonian drop in a Newtonian matrix subjected to large amplitude oscillatory shear flows. In the experimental study of Guido et al. (in Rheol Acta 43:575–583, 2004), the drop shape is found to oscillate at higher harmonics of the forcing frequency when the capillary number is increased. Their phenomenological model requires a much smaller capillary number for predicting the harmonic nature of the experimental data. In this paper, computational results on the evolution of drop length and inclination angle are obtained at the same fluid and flow properties as the experiments, and are shown to reasonably reproduce the experimental data. In particular, the computed velocity fields around the drop are shown to elucidate the over-rotation, which is a mechanism for the experimentally observed harmonics.

Summary Compared to the similar pressure-distribution cone-and-plate apparatus of Adams and Lodge (4), the new apparatus' improvements include: temperature control of the cone (as well as the plate); increased stiffening of the frame; four (not three) pressuremeasuring holes in the cone/plate region; inclusion of a pressure-measuring hole on the axis under the cone truncation; exclusive use of a vertical free liquid boundary at the cone rim (without a sea of liquid). Temperature control of the rotating cone and of the fixed plate leads to acceptable temperature uniformity in the test liquid for working temperatures within 10°C or 20°C of ambient; the corresponding interval is about 1°C if the cone temperature control is abandoned. Pressure gradients measured using a Newtonian liquid agree with those calculated using Walters' eq. (3). For a viscoelastic liquid, after subtracting inertial contributions, pressure distributions measured at a given shear rate in the cone/plate region do not change when the gap angle is changed from 2° to 3°, showing that the effects of secondary flow are negligible. Values ofN 3 =N 1 + 2N 2 obtained from the gradients of these distributions are believed to be in error by not more than ±1 Pa, in favorable cases. The present most useful ranges are: 10 to 5000 Pa forN 3; 0.1 to 200 sec–1 for shear rate; up to 5 Pa s for viscosity; and 5 to 40°C for temperature. As an application, it is shown that adding 0.1% of a high molecular weight polyisobutylene to a 2% polyisobutylene solution doublesN 3 and has no detectable effect on the viscosity measured at low shear rates with a Ferranti-Shirley viscometer.

This paper has introduced a pseudo-potential in bond-fluctuation model to simulate oscillatory shear flow of multiple self-avoiding chains in three dimensions following our previous work under simple shear flow. The oscillatory flow field was reasonably reproduced by lattice Monte Carlo simulation using this pseudo-potential neglecting hydrodynamic interaction. By sampling the configuration distribution functions, the macroscopic viscoelasticity of semi-concentrated polymer solution was determined. Both Newtonian and non-Newtonian regimes were studied. The complex modulus and dynamic viscosity exhibit a reasonable power relation with oscillatory frequency, which is consistent with present theories and experiments. Consequently, lattice Monte Carlo simulation has been extended to model free-draining self-avoiding multi chains subject to oscillatory shear flow and to investigate associated viscoelasticity on the molecular level.

Start up of plane Couette flow and large amplitude oscillatory shear flow of single and multimode Maxwell fluids as well as Oldroyd-B fluids have been analyzed by analytical or semi-analytical procedures. The result of our analysis indicates that if a single or a multimode Maxwell fluid has a relaxation time comparable or smaller than the rate of change of force imparted on the fluid, then the fluid response is not singular as Elasticity Number (E ). However, if this is not the case, as E , perturbations of single and multimode Maxwell fluids give rise to highly oscillatory velocity and stress fields. Hence, their behavior is singular in this limit. Moreover, we have observed that transients in velocity and stresses that are caused by propagation of shear waves in Maxwell fluids are damped much more quickly in the presence of faster and faster relaxing modes. In addition, we have shown that the Oldroyd-B model gives rise to results quantitatively similar to multimode Maxwell fluids at times larger than the fastest relaxation time of the multimode Maxwell fluid. This suggests that the effect of fast relaxing modes is equivalent to viscous effects at times larger than the fastest relaxation time of the fluid. Moreover, the analysis of shear wave propagation in multimode Maxwell fluids clearly show that the dynamics of wave propagation are governed by an effective relaxation and viscosity spectra. Finally, no quasi-periodic or chaotic flows were observed as a result of interaction of shear waves in large amplitude oscillatory shear flows for any combination of frequency and amplitudes.

This paper presents a numerical study of the transient developing laminar flow of a Newtonian incompressible fluid in a straight horizontal pipe oscillating around the vertical diameter at its entrance. The flow field is influenced by the tangential and Coriolis forces, which depend on the through‐flow Reynolds number, the oscillation Reynolds number and the angular amplitude of the pipe oscillation. The impulsive start of the latter generates a transient pulsating flow, whose duration increases with axial distance. In any cross‐section, this flow consists of a pair of symmetrical counter‐rotating vortices, which are alternatively clockwise and anti‐clockwise. The circumferentially averaged friction factor and the axial pressure gradient fluctuate with time and are always larger than the corresponding values for a stationary pipe. On the other hand, local axial velocities and local wall shear stress can be smaller than the corresponding stationary pipe values during some part of the pipe oscillation. The fluctuation amplitude of these local variables increases with axial distance and can be as high as 50% of the corresponding stationary pipe value, even at short distances from the pipe entrance. Eventually, the flow field reaches a periodic regime that depends only on the axial position. The results show that the transient flow field depends on the pipe oscillation pattern (initial position and/or direction of initial movement). Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The linear viscoelasticty of Leslie-Ericksen monodomain liquid crystals subjected to a bend distortion through a small amplitude oscillatory shear flow driven by harmonic wall stress is analyzed, using numerical and asymptotic methods. The viscoelastic material functions were derived using a new scaling approach that extracts the material parameters that control superposition. Small and high frequency superposition schemes for linear viscoleasticity were derived. The schemes were successfully applied to collapse the predicted loss and storage linear viscoelastic moduli of seven experimental data sets. Comparisons between different shear flows (simple shear and capillary Poiseuille) and different director distortion modes (splay and bend) shows that the superposition schemes are applicable to shear flows in any single director distortion mode.

In the present paper, numerical solution of the two-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes equations is used to study the forced shear flow induced by a spoiler's periodical up and down oscillation on a flat plate. The paper studies the evolution of growing, shedding, merging and decaying of vortices due to the spoiler's oscillation, particularly the dependence of the forced shear flow on the reduced frequency. Results show that the reduced frequency is a key factor in controlling the growing and the shedding of vortices in the shear layer. The instantaneous streamlines and the equi-vorticity contours, as well as the surface pressure distributions, have also been investigated. Numerical results agree well with corresponding experimental ones. The study is helpful for understanding the physical mechanism of shear flow control.

A semi-empirical spectrum model is proposed to describe the experimental data of the steady shear properties of a Shengli waxy crude oil near its gel point, where sophisticated structural effects become apparent due to the existence of waxy crystals in the crude oil. The model, consisting of a time spectrum, can well fit the steady shear viscosities of the waxy crude oil over the whole experimental shear rate region from 10-4 to 102 s- 1. Two other experiments on complex fluids reported recently in the literature are also well described by this model demonstrating the applicability and accuracy of the model.

The Karhunen–Loève procedure is applied to the analysis of an ensemble of snapshots obtained from a conditionally sampled localized shear layer simulation. The computed set of optimal basis functions is used to economically characterize sampled flow realizations. Pictorially it is seen that the essential features (and roughly 80% of the energy) of typical flows are captured by retaining roughly 10–20 parameters in the expansion. Smaller-scale features are resolved by retaining more terms in the series.

We investigate the effect of hydrophobic aggregation in alkali-swellable acrylic thickener solutions on shear and extensional flow properties at technically relevant polymer concentrations using the commercial thickener Sterocoll FD as model system. Apparent molecular weight of aggregates in water is M w  ≈ 108 g/mol and decreases by more than an order of magnitude in ethanol. Zero shear viscosity η 0 is low and shear thinning is weak compared to the high molecular weight of the aggregates. Linear viscoelastic relaxation is described by the Zimm theory up to frequencies of 104 rad/s, demonstrating that no entanglements are present in these solutions. This is further supported by the concentration dependence of η 0 and is attributed to strong association within the aggregates. Extensional flow behavior is characterized using the capillary break-up extensional rheometry technique including high-speed imaging. Solutions with ϕ ≥ 1% undergo uniform deformation and show pronounced strain hardening up to large Hencky strains. Elongational relaxation times are more than one order of magnitude lower than the longest shear relaxation times, suggesting that aggregates cannot withstand strong flows and do not contribute to the elongational viscosity.

The growth and relaxation of shear and normal stresses have been investigated for glass and carbon fiber-filled polyethylene melts over a wide range of shear rates and temperatures by means of a cone-and-plate rheogoniometer. Flow parameters and flow curves characterizing the stress overshoot and relaxation phenomena of the fiber-filled systems were determined experimentally. The influence of fiber loading, fiber size and temperature on the transient flow parameters are discussed.Predictions by the Meister and Bogue constitutive equations were compared with the experimental data for the transient shear and normal stresses. These equations predict satisfactorily the non-linear transient shear flow of polymer melts and its fiber-filled systems.

Flow alignment in a large amplitude oscillatory shear field (LAOS) of a lamellar AB and a lamellar ABC block copolymer (A,B are lamellae, C forms cylinders in B-lamellae) has been studied. 2D-small angle X-ray scattering (2D-SAXS) and scanning electron microscopy were used for morphological characterization, and flow birefringence and Fourier-Transform rheology were used to monitor the orientation. The diblock copolymer shows the known frequency-dependent orientation behavior, i.e., a perpendicular or a parallel orientation of the lamellae, while under all conditions for the ABC block copolymer only a perpendicular orientation after a long induction period was found. Due to the introduced third block C the AB lamellar structure with a high viscosity contrast between the A and B domains cannot adapt a parallel orientation of sliding phases. Dynamic mechanical analysis indicates shear induced improvement of the microphase separation of the short C block.

Large eddy simulation of planar shear flow past a square cylinder has been investigated. Dynamic Smagorinsky model has been used to model subgrid scale stress. The shear parameter, K, namely the nondimensional streamwise velocity gradient in the lateral direction, is 0.0, 0.1 and 0.2. Reynolds number based on the centerline velocity is fixed at Re=21400. The time and span‐averaged velocity components, pressure coefficient, Reynolds stresses for uniform are in good agreement with the literature. In shear flow the calculated flow structure and mean velocity components are shown to be markedly different from those of the uniform flow. With increasing shear parameter, the cylinder wake is dominated by clockwise vortices. Both the velocity components in shear flow are compared with respective components in uniform flow. Comparison of normal and shear stresses between shear and no shear case have also been presented. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Summary The theory of plastic viscoelastic fluids was developed by the author to represent the rheological behavior of polymer melts and solutions with high loading of small particles. The present paper develops an asymptotic formulation of the general theory which applies to laminar shear flows. The formulation is analogous to Criminale, Ericksen and Filbey's theory for viscoelastic fluids. We apply this to study plane Poiseuille and Couette flow.
