With measurement uncertainty estimation accounting for all relevant uncertainty contributions, the results of measurements using the same procedure on different objects or samples may no longer be considered as being independent, and correlations have to be taken into account. For this purpose, a simple approximation for the estimation of covariances is derived and applied to the estimation of uncertainty for some basic combinations of two measurement results. This covariance estimate is also applied to the estimation of uncertainty for the mean value of the results of replicate measurements on the same object or sample.

Clear definitions of basic terms, used to describe the quality of measurements, is essential for communication among scientists
as well as when reporting measurement results to clients. Even if appropriate definitions are given in international standards
and guidelines, the understanding of some basic terms sometimes proves difficult. The reasons for this are various, e.g.,
the same words being defined rather differently in encyclopaedias and in international standards as well as concepts, well
established in some languages, that may be relatively new in other national communities and at large in the international
one. Here we present a matrix intended to clarify the relationships between the type of error affecting an analytical measurement,
the respective qualitative concepts (performance characteristics) and their quantitative expression.

The formation and the optical features of two-dimensional aggregates formed by DNA-directed immobilization and cross-linking of bifunctional DNA–gold nanoparticles at flat gold substrates are analyzed. The samples are structurally characterized by atomic force microscopy to evaluate the particle size, the particle densities, and the degree of aggregation. The optical characteristics determined by UV/visible measurements are correlated with the structural features observed.

requiring small amounts of reagent. Protein microarrays have become well-established research tools in basic and applied research
and the first products are already on the market. This article reviews the current state of protein microarrays and discusses
developments and future demands relating to protein arrays in their role as multiplexed immunoassays in the field of diagnostics.

The paper reproduces a talk given at a 2-day symposium on quality assurance in chemistry held in Brisbane, Australia in 2005. Intended for an audience of analysts in the field, the theme of the symposium drew inspiration from the series of books by Douglas Adams “The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy”. An introduction to basic concepts of metrological traceability is followed by a discussion of practical steps to ensure metrological traceability of field measurement results. The relationship between metrological traceability and comparability of measurement results is discussed. To achieve metrological traceability in the field, the use of appropriate certified reference materials for calibration is recommended. Examples of atmospheric carbon dioxide and roadside breathalyzer measurements are given.

Electrochemical copolymerization of furan and 3-chlorothiophene was performed at constant electrode potential in a binary
solvent system consisting of boron trifluoride diethyl etherate + ethyl ether (BFEE + EE; ratio 1:2) and trifluoroacetic acid
(10% by volume). The homopolymers and copolymers obtained were studied with cyclic voltammetry, in situ ultraviolet–visible
spectroscopy, in situ resonance Raman spectroscopy, and in situ conductivity measurements. The spectroelectrochemical properties
of the copolymers show intermediate features between polyfuran and poly(3-chlorothiophene). The conductivity changes of homo-
and copolymer films are almost completely reversible when the potential shift direction is reversed.

There are suggestions in the electrochemical literature that a body force F
∇c acts when an electrolyte with a non-uniform concentration c of paramagnetic ions is subject to a uniform magnetic field. We demonstrate, experimentally and theoretically, that no such
magnetic body force exists, to first order. A second-order correction associated with the demagnetizing field does lead to
a very small concentration-dependent body force, which is not expected to produce any observable effect in electrochemistry.

Recent progress in studies of several types of core-shell structured electrode materials, including TiO2/C, Si/C, Si/SiO
x
, LiCoO2/C, and LiFePO4/C nanocomposites, including details of their preparation and their electrochemical performance is briefly reviewed. Results
clearly show that the coating shell can effectively prevent the aggregation of the nanosized cores, which are the electrochemically
active materials. In addition, the diffusion coefficients of lithium ions can be increased, and the reversibility of lithium
intercalation and deintercalation is improved. As a result, the cycling behavior is greatly improved. The reviewed results
suggest that core-shell nanocomposites are a good starting point for further development of new promising electrode materials.
