Generalization of Backward Differentiation Formulas for Parallel Computers

We analyze an extension of backward differentiation formulas, used as boundary value methods, that generates a class of methods with nice stability and convergence properties. These methods are obtained starting from the boundary value GBDFs class, and are in the class of EBDF-type methods. We discuss different ways of using these linear multistep formulas in order to have efficient parallel implementations. Numerical experiments show their effectiveness.     

General Linear Boundary Value Problems for Elliptic Operators with VMO Coefficients

We prove a priori estimates in Sobolev spaces for general linear elliptic boundary value problems with VMO coefficients.We give also results of existence and uniqueness of a solution.     

The fresh-salt water interface in a semi-pervious aquifer

The paper determines the location of the steady state interface between fresh and saltwater in a plane coastal aquifer. The lower boundary is totally impervious while the upper one is impervious below land and semi-pervious below the sea allowing an outflow through this part of the upper boundary. The model equations reduce to two boundary value problems, one valid in x < 0 and the other in x > 0 here x is measured along the aquifer with the origin at the coast. In each region unknown boundaries have to be determined as part of the solution using boundary and continuity conditions. Two cases are presented using the Dupuit approximation. One where the solution can be written down in terms of elementary functions and the other in which we have to use a phase space analysis.     

A Collocation Code for Singular Boundary Value Problems in Ordinary Differential Equations

We present a MATLAB package for boundary value problems in ordinary differential equations. Our aim is the efficient numerical solution of systems of ODEs with a singularity of the first kind, but the solver can also be used for regular problems. The basic solution is computed using collocation methods and a new, efficient estimate of the global error is used for adaptive mesh selection. Here, we analyze some of the numerical aspects relevant for the implementation, describe measures to increase the efficiency of the code and compare its performance with the performance of established standard codes for boundary value problems.     

Eigenvalues and the One-Dimensional p-Laplacian

We consider the boundary value problem (?_p(u′))′ + λF(t, u) = 0, with p > 1, t ∈ (0, 1), u(0) = u(1) = 0, and with λ > 0. The value of λ is chosen so that the boundary value problem has a positive solution. In addition, we derive an explicit interval for λ such that, for any λ in this interval, the existence of a positive solution to the boundary value problem is guaranteed. In addition, the existence of two positive solutions for λ in an appropriate interval is also discussed.     

Boundary problems with meromorphic symbols in cylindrical domains

We show relative index formulas for boundary value problems in cylindrical domains and Sobolev spaces with different weights at ±∞. The amplitude functions are meromorphic in the axial covariable and take values in the space of boundary value problems on the cross section of the cylinder. Expansions of Dirichlet to Neumann operators under perturbations

We obtain an asymptotic expansion of the Dirichlet to Neumann operator (DNO) for the Dirichlet problem on perturbations of the unit disk. We write our result in terms of pseudodifferential operators which themselves have expansions in the perturbation parameter. For a given power of the perturbation parameter, m > 0, and a given order, n < 0, we give an algorithm which allows for the expansion of the symbol of the DNO up to mth power in the perturbation parameter, with error terms belonging to symbols of order n.     

Positive Radial Solutions of Some Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations

We consider Dirichlet boundary value problems for a class of nonlinear ordinary differential equations motivated by the study of radial solutions of equations which are perturbations of the p-Laplacian.

Heat Kernel Estimates for Operators with Boundary Conditions

We prove Gaussian upper bounds for kernels associated with non – symmetric, non – autonomous second order parabolic operators of divergence form subject to various boundary conditions. The growth of the kernel in time is determined by theboundary conditions and the geometric properties of the domain. The theory gives a unified treatment for Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions, and the existence of a Gaussian type bound is essentially reduced to verifying some properties of the Hilbert space in the weak formulation of the problem.     

Generalized Stokes resolvent equations in an infinite layer with mixed boundary conditions

In this paper we prove unique solvability of the generalized Stokes resolvent equations in an infinite layer Ω₀ = ℝ^{n –1} × (–1, 1), n ≥ 2, in L^q ‐Sobolev spaces, 1 < q < ∞, with slip boundary condition of on the “upper boundary” ∂Ω⁺₀ = ℝ^{n –1} × {1} and non‐slip boundary condition on the “lower boundary” ∂Ω^–₀ = ℝ^{n –1} × {–1}. The solution operator to the Stokes system will be expressed with the aid of the solution operators of the Laplace resolvent equation and a Mikhlin multiplier operator acting on the boundary. The present result is the first step to establish an L^q ‐theory for the free boundary value problem studied by Beale [9] and Sylvester [22] in L ²‐spaces. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. On the solution of highly structured nonlinear equations

We introduce a quasi-Newton update for nonlinear equations which have a Jacobian with sparse triangular factors and consider its application, through an algorithm of Deuflhard, to the solution of boundary value problems by multiple shooting.     

Moving boundary value problems for the wave equation

We study certain boundary value problems for the one-dimensional wave equation posed in a time-dependent domain. The approach we propose is based on a general transform method for solving boundary value problems for integrable nonlinear PDE in two variables, that has been applied extensively to the study of linear parabolic and elliptic equations. Here we analyse the wave equation as a simple illustrative example to discuss the particular features of this method in the context of linear hyperbolic PDEs, which have not been studied before in this framework.

Discontinuous Galerkin methods for periodic boundary value problems

This article considers the extension of well‐known discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element formulations to elliptic problems with periodic boundary conditions. Such problems routinely appear in a number of applications, particularly in homogenization of composite materials. We propose an approach in which the periodicity constraint is incorporated weakly in the variational formulation of the problem. Both H¹ and L² error estimates are presented. Analysis of a single server queue with semi-Markovian service interruption

In this paper we analyze a discrete-time single server queue where the service time equals one slot. The numbers of arrivals in each slot are assumed to be independent and identically distributed random variables. The service process is interrupted by a semi-Markov process, namely in certain states the server is available for service while the server is not available in other states. We analyze both the transient and steady-state models. We study the generating function of the joint probability of queue length, the state and the residual sojourn time of the semi-Markov process. We derive a system of Hilbert boundary value problems for the generating functions. The system of Hilbert boundary value problems is converted to a system of Fredholm integral equations. We show that the system of Fredholm integral equations has a unique solution. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Stability of equilibrium solution to inhomogeneous heat equation under a 3-point boundary condition

We consider a one-dimensional heat equation with inhomogeneous term, satisfying three-point boundary conditions, such that the temperature at the end is controlled by a sensor at the point η. We show that the integral solution, in the space of continuous functions satisfying the boundary values, converges to the equilibrium solution. This answers a question posed for nonlinear Laplacians, but in the linear case only.
