Iron‐Mediated Cleavage of C?C Bonds in Vicinal Tricarbonyl Compounds in Water

Three of a kind : Vicinal tricarbonyl compounds undergo C? C cleavage mediated by ferric ions (see scheme). The observed cleavage of ninhydrin and dehydroascorbic acid has relevance for amino acid detection and the metabolism of vitamin C.

     

Iron‐Promoted C?C Bond Formation in the Gas Phase

An unusual iron transfer and carbon–carbon coupling take place in gas‐phase ionized mixtures containing ferrocene and dichloromethane. Ferrous chloride and the protonated benzenium ion are eventually formed by a thermal and efficient reaction, through stable intermediates that undergo a remarkable reorganization. The mechanism of the concerted iron extrusion, carbon–chlorine bond activation and carbon–carbon bond formation is elucidated by electronic structure calculations that show the crucial role of iron.     

Nickel‐Catalyzed Enantioselective C?C Bond Formation through C?O Cleavage in Aryl Esters

We report the first enantioselective C C bond formation through C O bond cleavage using aryl ester counterparts. This method is characterized by its wide substrate scope and results in the formation of quaternary stereogenic centers with high yields and asymmetric induction.     

Ruthenium‐Catalyzed C?C Bond Cleavage in Lignin Model Substrates

Ruthenium–triphos complexes exhibited unprecedented catalytic activity and selectivity in the redox‐neutral C C bond cleavage of the β‐O‐4 lignin linkage of 1,3‐dilignol model compounds. A mechanistic pathway involving a dehydrogenation‐initiated retro‐aldol reaction for the C C bond cleavage was proposed in line with experimental data and DFT calculations.
