The results of an investigation of the structure and properties of a series of crosslinked polymers are presented. It is shown that removing paraffin size from the glass strands by means of ultrasound has little effect on their strength, improves the structure of the material, and raises the mechanical strength of the GRP by 11–12%. The results of statistical treatment of experimental data on the physicomechanical properties of glass-reinforced plastics, based on alkali-free, aluminoborosilicate glass fibers (composition NS-55/6) with paraffin as lubricant and epoxyphenolbutyral composition EFB-4, obtained from tensile tests on flat specimens prepared by "wet" winding on a mandrel, are given. The applicability of two-dimensional applied theories of the Kirchhoff-Love, Timoshenko, and Ambartsumyan types to problems of the stability of shells with low shear stiffness [1] is discussed. The stability of cylindrical shells in axial compression has been experimentally investigated. The glass-reinforced plastic shells were fabricated in various ways: by winding glass strand, from glass cloth, and by a combination of the first two methods. The buckling mode and critical load were determined as functions of the ratio of shell radius to shell thickness. A dependence of the thickness of the surface layer on the mechanical and wave characteristics of polymers has been obtained from joint solution of the equations of surface-wave motion and surface-layer equilibrium.
