The preparation of zwitterionic latex particles is reported by using a mixed anionic and cationic initiator system without requiring surface-active agents. Isoelectric points were found from microelectrophoresis experiments and were in the pH range of 3.5-5. Close to the isoelectric point, the latices coagulated as expected, and good stability was achieved outside this narrow range. This range of stability was in good agreement with predictions from current theory. Redispersion after coagulation was found to be difficult as was expected for a hydrophobic colloid. The electrokinetic behavior did not result in the maximum in zeta potential at an electrolyte concentration of 1 mM unlike the situation for other hydrophobic polystyrene latex particles, and hence these systems may be even better models for other colloidal studies.  相似文献

An emulsion polymerization of styrene in the presence of a zwitterionic emulsifier,N,N-dimethyl-n-laurylbetaine (LNB), was carried out at pH 7.0. The stability of mixed dispersions composed of latex particles prepared with the emulsifier (LNB) and titanium dioxide particles was studied as a function of pH. The zeta potential of the synthesized latex particles was significantly dependent on the pH and showed the existence of an isoelectric point. In the pH range of 3.0–8.3, where the latices are positively charged while titanium dioxide pigment particles are negatively charged, the mixed suspensions of the latices and titanium dioxide particles were dispersed but exhibited heterocoagulation with increasing particle number of the latices. Furthermore, titanium dioxide particles were restabilized with further addition of the latices. The mechanisms of these processes are discussed. A similar experiment was conducted with silica particles.  相似文献

Brownian dynamics simulations of the filming process of a mixed polymer latex in the water evaporation stage were performed in order to explore the effect of surface potential on latex particle packing and distribution at a temperature far below the glass transitions of polymers in bulk. Polymer latex particles are modeled as spheres that interact via DLVO potential with various surface charge densities for emulsifier-free emulsion polymerized particles and dispersion polymerized particles. It is found that the distribution of modeled poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene latex particles in the finally formed film exhibits a noticeable dependence of surface potentials of latex particles. When the difference of the surface potentials between binary mixed latex particles is small, the particles distribute randomly. In contrast, when the difference of the surface potentials between binary mixed latex particles is large, heterocoagulation occurs and the polymer latex in which the repulsive electrostatic potential is weak will form clusters in the film. The results are in agreement with laser confocal fluorescence microscopy observations of fluorescent dye labeled poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene mixed latex films. The correlation between latex particles increases with increasing repulsive electrostatic potential, and the spatial order can be obtained at the end of the water evaporation stage. The compaction of DNA by a cationic surfactant both in the bulk and adsorbed on the surface of latex particles was followed for the first time by SANS. In the bulk, a decrease in the overall size of the DNA coil in the presence of the cationic surfactant was observed at a negative-to-positive charge ratio far below the phase separation region, at a negative-to-positive charge ratio of 18. Additionally, large surfactant aggregates seem to form within the DNA-surfactant complex. On the other hand, DNA adsorbs onto the surface of latex particles, forming a thick layer, as evidenced by the fitting of the SANS data to a core-shell form factor. Addition of a cationic surfactant to the DNA-coated latex particles at a negative-to-positive charge ratio of 38 induces a slight decrease in the size of the particle layer, where the cationic surfactant is evenly distributed within the adsorbed layer. A further decrease of the negative-to-positive charge ratio to 18 induces a dramatic change in the SANS data that suggests significant compaction of the adsorbed layer and the formation of large surfactant aggregates, similar to those detected in the bulk.  相似文献

以氯丁胶乳(Pa)为种子乳液,甲基丙烯酸甲酯(Pb)为第二单体,采用种子乳液聚合法,制备了氯丁胶乳-聚甲基丙烯酸甲酯复合乳胶粒。 热力学分析表明,当Pb的体积分数Φb<0.69时,可同时形成Pa-Pb型正核-壳和(Pa+Pb)分离型乳胶粒,当Φb>0.69时,形成Pb-Pa型翻转型核壳结构乳胶粒,并伴有Pa-Pb型正核-壳结构乳胶粒的形成。 动力学分析表明,引发剂类型、第二单体的加入方式、种子乳胶粒的交联、单体/聚合物质量比是影响乳胶粒形态的主要因素。 采用水溶性引发剂过二硫酸钾(KPS),以饥饿态方式加入单体,氯丁胶乳 聚甲基丙烯酸甲酯(PCR-PMMA)复合乳胶粒呈现正核-壳结构,以充溢态方式加入单体则不能形成明显的核-壳结构;而以油溶性偶氮二异丁腈(AIBN)为引发剂时,单体无论以充溢态方式加入还是饥饿态加入均倾向于形成翻转核-壳型粒子。 在种子乳胶粒中加入一定量交联剂二缩三乙二醇二甲基丙烯酸酯,有利于形成明显的正核壳结构。 以饥饿态进料,KPS为引发剂时,随着单体用量增加,壳层变厚,仍呈正核-壳结构,与热力学分析结果相吻合;以AIBN为引发剂时,随着单体用量增加,PCR-PMMA复合乳胶粒逐渐由翻转核壳型结构变为互穿结构。  相似文献

Hollow spherical silica particles with hexagonally ordered mesoporous shells are synthesized with the dual use of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and unmodified polystyrene latex microspheres as templates in concentrated aqueous ammonia. In most of the hollow mesoporous particles, cylindrical pores run parallel to the hollow core due to interactions of CTAB/silica aggregates with the latices. Effects on the product structure of the CTAB:latex ratio, the amount of aqueous ammonia, and the latex size are studied. Hollow particles with hexagonally patterned mesoporous shells are obtained at moderate CTAB:latex ratios. Too little CTAB causes silica shell growth without surfactant templating, and too much induces nucleation of new mesoporous silica particles without latex cores. The concentration of ammonia must be large to induce co-assembly of CTAB, silica, and latex into dispersed particles. The results are consistent with the formation of particles by addition of CTAB/silica aggregates to the surface of latex microspheres. When the size and number density of the latex microspheres are changed, the size of the hollow core and the shell thickness can be controlled. However, if the microspheres are too small (50 nm in this case), agglomerated particles with many hollow voids are obtained, most likely due to colloidal instability.  相似文献

在少量双官能团水溶性共单体(磺化丁二酸-聚乙二醇-烯丙基缩水甘油醚酯)存在下进行MMA/BA无皂乳液聚合,用CoulterLS230激光粒径分析仪研究了乳胶粒子的成核机理和单分散粒子的形成过程.乳胶粒子的成粒过程属多步成粒机理:先均相成核,形成不稳定的初始粒子,然后凝聚成稳定乳胶粒,其粒径分布经历了先变宽后变窄的过程,这是聚合过程中成核-凝聚-增长共同作用,相互竞争的结果.它还导致聚合初期出现周期成核的现象.  相似文献

An experimental approach, based on turbidity measurements, is proposed for studies of the stability in colloidal mixtures containing particles with large disparity in size. The main advantage of this approach is that it permits investigations even under conditions of comparable particle number concentrations of the two colloidal populations. Binary mixtures containing a poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) latex and a Ludox AS-40 silica sol were investigated. The silica particles were much smaller than the latex ones. The experimental stability factors were compared with the theoretical values computed on the basis of the Kihira-Ryde-Matijevic model (J. Chem. Soc., Faraday Trans. 88(16), 2379 (1992)) for interaction between spherical particles with unevenly distributed surface charges. All the experimental results support the idea that, even when both sols are negatively charged, the small silica particles are adsorbed onto the latex surface. Under these conditions, the heteroaggregates, which are composed of PVAc cores surrounded with silica particles, can be modeled as PVAc particles having "modified" surface characteristics (i.e., average Stern potential and varying extents of the surface charge segregation). A single-charge emulsion polymerization involving a monomer which is a good solvent for its polymer is considered. It is shown to be unlikely that within the polymerizing latex particles there are concentration gradients large enough measurably to affect the kinetics of the reaction. The average displacement of monomers due to Brownian motion within the latex particles and in the absence of concentration gradients is calculated. This diffusive mean free path, corresponding to an interval involving less than 1% change in conversion, is shown to be much longer than the radius of the latex particle. Consequently, loci where monomer concentration is perturbed by conversion to polymer are immediately swamped by unreacted monomer. Also, direct experimental evidence exists showing that the monomer concentration in latex particles is about the same when nonpolymerizing latex particles are saturated or during polymerization in the presence of monomer excess. The thermodynamics of saturation swelling preclude the possibility of the existence of large concentration gradients. The arguments that have been advocated in the literature for core–skin separation within polymerizing latex particles were based on conversion data which were thought to be linear with time, while a reexamination indicates that they were not. The observed core–skin separation obtained when butadiene or tritiated styrene were copolymerized with styrene in the presence of a polystyrene homopolymer seed latex has questionable relevance to single-charge homopolymerization. There are reasons to doubt that the distribution of co-monomers within latex particles can be frozen by their conversion to polymers in a two-stage emulsion polymerization.  相似文献

Thermogravimetric analysis and a synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering technique were employed to characterize the structural evolution of a polymeric latex dispersion during the first three stages of film formation at different temperatures and relative humidities. Three intermediate stages were identified: (1) stage I*, (2) stage I**, and (3) stage II*. Stage I* is intermediate to the conventionally defined stages I and II, where latex particles began to crystallization. The change of drying temperature affects the location of the onset of ordering, whereas relative humidity does not. Stage I** is where the latex particles with their diffuse shell of counterions in the fcc structure are in contact with each other. The overlapping of these layers results in an acceleration of the lattice shrinkage due to a decrease of effective charges. Stage II* is where the latex particles, dried well above their T(g), are deformed and packed only partially during film formation due to incomplete evaporation of water in the latex film. This is because of a rapid deformation of the soft latex particles at the liquid/air interface so that a certain amount of water is unable to evaporate from the latex film effectively. For a latex dispersion dried at a temperature close to its minimum film formation temperature, the transition between stages II and III can be continuous because the latex particles deform at a much slower rate, providing sufficient surface area for water evaporation.  相似文献

The interactions between polystyrene latex particles and ethyl cellulose (EC) with different functionalization pattern have been investigated. 3-Mono-O-EC and EC with statistical functionalization pattern in the anhydroglucose units were studied in aqueous solutions and dispersions. EC belongs to a group of polymers that phase separate upon heating. The two types of EC showed large differences in phase separation temperature, which was explained as an effect of different interactions with water due to different functionalization pattern. Both types of EC did adsorb on polystyrene particles, which indicated a favorable interaction between EC and polystyrene latex particles, however, in a different manner depending on the structure of EC. The conventionally synthesized ethyl cellulose with statistical functionalization pattern formed much stronger networks with polystyrene latex particles than 3-mono-O-EC did. The lower phase separation temperature and the slightly higher molecular weight of the conventional ethyl cellulose gave it higher preference for interacting with polystyrene latex particles to form network. Throughout the study, comparison is made with other cellulose derivatives like ethyl(hydroxyethyl) cellulose (EHEC) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC).  相似文献

 Stable poly(methyl methacrylate) latex particles (220–360 nm in diameter) using dextran as the protective colloid were prepared and characterized in this study. Such an emulsion polymerization system follows Smith–Ewart Case III kinetics (i.e., the average number of free radicals per particle is greater than 0.5) due to the relatively large latex particle size. The carbohydrate content of these dextran modified emulsion polymers shows a maximum around 5% dextran based on total monomer weight. The latex stability during polymerization is closely related to the carbohydrate content of these latex particles, and it is controlled by the ratio of the thickness of the dextran adsorption layer to that of the electric double layer of the latex particles. The critical flocculation concentration (CFC) of the latex products correlates well with the latex stability during polymerization. The greater the total scrap produced during polymerization (i.e., the stronger the bridging flocculation), the lower is the CFC of the latex products. The affinity precipitation of concanavalin A (a model lectin used in this study) by the dextran modified PMMA latex particles is also illustrated in this study. Voltammetry of vinylferrocene (VFc)-immobilized polystyrene(PS)-based latex particles was carried out in aqueous suspensions by changing the size of latex particles in order to investigate the dependence of the electroactivity of the particles on their size. The anodic peak current was controlled by diffusion of the latex. The voltammetric peak currents increased with an increase in the diameter of PS latex particles for a given analytical concentration of the particles, exhibiting the dependence on 1.5 powers of the diameter of the particles. The increase can be explained in terms of combination of the uniform distribution of VFc in the particle, the partial charge transfer, and the Stokes-Einstein equation for diffusion coefficients. The oxidation of VFc occurs in the restricted domain (0.07 microm) from a contact point of the particle with the electrode. The overall reaction mechanism is diffusion of the particle to the electrode, partial oxidation to VFc+, release of VFc+ from the particle to the solution, and reduction of the released VFc+.  相似文献

Three‐dimensional ordered latex particles were prepared in presence of polymerizable anionic emulsifier—sodium undec‐10‐enoate (UDNa) in emulsion polymerization. Only under a certain monomer/emulsifier ratio can we get such a result. Three‐dimensional ordered latex particles cannot be acquired with the use of conventional emulsifiers such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), etc. The double bond of polymerizable emulsifier can copolymerize with the main monomer and become covalently bound to integrate with the main polymer chains which result in stable latexes. TEM and SEM images show that whether it is diluted or not the latexes can always keep in the three‐dimensional regularly order.  相似文献

The adsorption of a rhodamine X labeled oligonucleotide composed of 25-mers of thymine (dT(25)-ROX) onto the thermosensitive shell of PMMA/PNIPAM core-shell latex particles was studied at 22 and 40 degrees C, below and above the T(VPT) (volume phase transition temperature) of the PNIPAM shell, respectively. The experimental binding isotherms were well fitted with the cooperative Hill model. The Hill coefficient is lower than 1 at both temperatures showing that the adsorption is anticooperative. The polarity of the shell was probed by both the lifetimes and solvatochromic shifts of the zwitterionic form of rhodamine X. For temperatures below the shell T(VPT) has a polarity similar to that of water, while for temperatures above the transition the polarity is equivalent to that of a water/dioxane mixture with 30% (v/v) water.  相似文献

在微波辐照条件下 ,用偶氮二异丁基脒盐酸盐 (AIBA)引发甲基丙烯酸甲酯的均聚 ,制得窄分散的无皂阳离子胶乳粒子 .讨论了引发剂的浓度、单体的浓度、离子强度等对粒子大小、分散性和乳液稳定性的影响 .对微波辐照和水浴加热进行比较 ,发现微波辐照反应速度快、反应无恒速阶段 ,所得粒子的粒径小 ,粒子数目多 ,这为通过改变反应条件制备适宜的窄分散的胶乳粒子提供了一条途径 .  相似文献

Hybrid organic–inorganic latex particles are synthesized to combine the beneficial properties of the constituents which thus lead to synergistic improvement in the properties. The properties of hybrid particles are dependent on the successful hybridization process, thus controlling or tuning of such processes by effective characterization is immensely important. Analytical ultracentrifugation provides these characterization possibilities owing to its high statistical capability and ability to characterize multiple parameters. The use of different detection methodologies can help in generating valuable information on the overall size and density distributions of the particles. Apart from that, it is also possible to quantify the presence of any free polymer and inorganic particles in the hybrid latex which would affect the properties of hybrid latexes. By following the densities of the pure and hybrid particles, it is also possible to quantify the amounts of the constituent phases in the hybrid particles. The density gradients generated in preparative ultracentrifugation also provide additional possibilities for the characterization of the hybrid particles which have densities higher than the measurable range in the analytical ultracentrifuge. Evolution of hybrid particles can also be studied as a function of time. It also provides advantage of separation of the various fractions for further characterization.  相似文献
