Poly(ethylene imine)‐graft‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEI‐g‐PEO) copolymers were synthesized via Michael addition reaction between acryl‐terminated poly(ethylene oxide) methyl ether (PEO) and poly(ethylene imine) (PEI). The brush‐like copolymers were characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. It is found that the crystallinity of the PEO side chains in the copolymers remained unaffected by the PEI backbone whereas the crystal structure of PEO side chains was altered to some extent by the PEI backbone. The crystallization behavior of PEO blocks in the copolymers suggests that the bush‐shaped copolymers are microphase‐separated in the molten state. The PEO side chains of the copolymers were selectively complexed with α‐cyclodextrin (α‐CD) to afford hydrophobic side chains (i.e., PEO/α‐CD inclusion complexes). The X‐ray diffraction (XRD) shows that the inclusion complexes (ICs) of the PEO side chains displayed a channel‐type crystalline structure. It is identified that the stoichiometry of the inclusion complexation of the PEI‐g‐PEO with α‐CD is close to that of the control PEO with α‐CD.

Acryloyl terminated Poly (ethyleneoxide)macromonomers (PEO-A) with different PEO chain lengths have been prepared by deactivation of PEO alkoxide with acryloyl chloride. A new kind of amphiphilic polystyrene-g-poly (ethylene oxide)graft copolymer containing both microphase separated and PEO side chain structures has been synthesized from radical copolymerization of PEO-A macromonomer with styrene. After careful purification by a newly-developed method called "selective dissolution', the well-defined structure of the purified copolymers was confirmed by IR, ~1H-NMR and GPC. Various experimental parameters controlling the copolymerization were studied in detail. The results indicated that the feed ratio of styrene to macromonomer(S/M) was the most important determining factor for the composition of the copolymers. A detailed "comb- model" was proposed to describe the molecular structure of the graft copolymers. Finally, this amphiphilic graft copolymers may readily form microphase separated structures as clearly indicated by transmission electron microscopy.  相似文献

The present paper covers the poly (ethylene oxide) macromer with vinyl benzyl terminal group (PEO-VB) prepared by deactivation of the alkoxide function of mono-functional "living" PEO chains with vinyl benzyl chloride (VBC). The obtained macromers were subjected to careful purification and detailed characterization. A new kind of amphiphilic polystyrene-g-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-g-PEO) with both mi-crophase separated and PEO side chains was synthesized from radical copolymerization of PEO-VB macromer with styrene monomer. An improved purification method, referred as "selective dissolvation", was established for the isolation of graft copolymers from the grafting products, and the purity and yield of the purified copolymers were satisfactory. The well-defined structure of the purified copolymers was confirmed by IR, 1H NMR and GPC. The bulk composition of the graft copolymers was determined by a well-established first derivative UV spectrometry. Various experimental parameters controlling the copolymeri  相似文献

Macro- and microphase separation of compatibilizing graft copolymers in melt-mixed polystyrene/polyamide-6 blends was studied by transmission electron microscopy and thermal analysis. Three different graft copolymers with main chains of polystyrene and side chains of poly(ethylene oxide) were used as additives at various concentrations. The polyamide-6 domain sizes decreased with increasing amounts of compatibilizing graft copolymers in the blends up to a saturation concentration, after which no further reduction was noted. Macrophase separation of the graft copolymers into discrete macrodomains 20–200 nm in size occurred at concentrations equal to or slightly lower than the saturation concentration. The macrodomains of the graft copolymers were microphase separated, and the sizes and shapes of the microdomains were found to largely depend on the graft copolymer structure and composition. As a consequence of microphase separation, poly(ethylene oxide) crystallinity was noted in blends with sufficiently high macrophase contents. Observations of a graft copolymer interphase between the polystyrene matrix and the polyamide-6 domains confirmed that the graft copolymer was present at the blend interfaces in some of the compatibilized blends. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Poly(styrene-graft-ethylene oxide), having alkyl chains (C12 or C18) on the polystyrene main chain or on the poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) side chains, were synthesized. The main chain was alkylated by first ionizing amide groups in a styrene/acrylamide copolymer with tert-butoxide, and then using the amide anions as sites for reactions with 1-bromoalkanes. An excess of amide anions was used in the reaction, and the remaining anions were subsequently utilized as initiator sites for the anionic polymerization of ethylene oxide (EO). Synthesis of poly(styrene-graft-ethylene oxide) with alkylated side chains was accomplished by polymerization of EO onto the ionized styrene/acrylamide copolymer, followed by an alkylation of the terminal alkoxide anions with 1-bromoalkanes. The alkylated graft copolymers were structurally characterized by using elemental analysis, 1H NMR, GPC, and IR spectroscopy. DSC analysis showed that only graft copolymers with PEO contents exceeding about 50 wt % and side chain crystallinities comparable to those of homo-PEO. Main chain alkylated graft copolymers generally had higher crystalinities, as compared to nonalkylated and side chain alkylated samples. The graft copolymers absorbed water corresponding to one water molecule per EO unit at low PEO contents. The water absorption increased progressively at PEO contents above 30 wt % for main chain alkylated samples and above 50 wt % for non-alkylated samples. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Four poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(propylene oxide)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) copolymers with different molecular weights and PPO/PEO composition ratios were synthesized. The characterization of the PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymers was studied by surface tension measurement, UV-vis spectra, and surface pressure method. These results clearly showed that the CMC of PEO-PPO-PEO was not a certain value but a concentration range, in contrast to classical surfactant, and two breaks around CMC were reflected in both surface tension isotherm curves and UV-vis absorption spectra. The range of CMC became wider with increasing PPO/PEO composition ratio. Surface pressure Pi-A curves revealed that the amphiphilic triblock copolymer PEO-PPO-PEO molecule was flexible at the air/water interface. We found that the minimum area per molecule at the air/water interface increased with the proportion of PEO chains. The copolymers with the same mass fractions of PEO had similar slopes in the isotherm of the Pi-A curve. From the demulsification experiments a conclusion had been drawn that the dehydration speed increased with decreased content of PEO, but the final dehydration rate of four demulsifiers was approximate. We determined that the coalescence of water drops resulted in the breaking of crude oil emulsions from the micrograph.  相似文献

Amphiphilic graft copolymers were prepared via the radical copolymerization of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macromonomers with fluorocarbon or hydrocarbon acrylates in toluene with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. 1H NMR spectroscopy confirmed that the composition of the graft copolymers corresponded well to the monomer feed. For gel electrolytes prepared from the amphiphilic copolymers, the nature of the ionophobic parts of the amphiphilic graft copolymers had a great influence on the ion conductivity. Gel electrolytes based on graft copolymers containing fluorocarbon side chains showed significantly higher ion conductivity than electrolytes based on graft copolymers containing hydrocarbon groups. The ambient‐temperature ion conductivity was about 2.6 mS/cm at 20 °C for a gel electrolyte based on an amphiphilic graft copolymer consisting of an acrylate backbone carrying PEO and fluorocarbon side chains. Corresponding gels based on graft copolymers with PEO side chains and hydrocarbon groups showed an ambient‐temperature ion conductivity of about 1.2 mS/cm. The gel electrolytes contained 30 wt % copolymer and 70 wt % 1 M LiPF6 in an ethylene carbonate/γ‐butyrolactone (2/1 w/w) mixture. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(o‐aminobenzyl alcohol) (POABA) was grafted with poly(ethylene oxide)s (PEOs) through the reaction of tosylated PEO with both the hydroxide and amine moieties of reduced POABA. Reduced POABA was prepared through the acid‐mediated polymerization of o‐aminobenzyl alcohol, followed by neutralization with an aqueous ammonium hydroxide solution and reduction with hydrazine. The grafted copolymers were very soluble in common polar solvents, such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, and dimethylformamide, and the copolymers with longer PEO side chains (number‐average molecular weight > 164) were even water‐soluble. The conductivities of the doped grafted copolymers decreased with increasing PEO side‐chain length because of the nonconducting PEO and its torsional effect on the POABA backbone. The conductivity of highly water‐soluble POABA‐g‐PEO‐350 was 0.689 × 10?3 S/cm, that is, in the semiconducting range. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

Amphiphilic graft copolymers consisting of a hydrophobic backbone and poly(oxyethylene) (PEO) side chains were employed as solidliquid phase-transfer catalysts (PTC) in the substitution of octylbromide by solid potassium phenoxide in toluene. A wide variety of structures were synthesized via ester substitution of poly(phthalimidoacrylate) (PPIA) or poly(phthalimidoacrylate-co-styrene) [poly(PIA-co-St)] with amino-functionalized methoxy-PEO (MPEO-NH2). The phase-transfer catalytic activity (PTA) of these soluble graft copolymers was studied as a function of the structure of the backbone, the length of the side chains, and the graft density. The graft copolymers of a high degree of grafting showed PTA higher than that of parent PEOs. GPC was used to study the behavior of the graft copolymers in toluene at 90°C. It is believed that the phase-transfer reaction is accelerated in the PEO microphase.  相似文献

Graft copolymers consisting of polyamide 12 or poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) as backbone polymers and side chains of poly(ethylene oxide) have been synthesized. The amide and hydroxyl groups of the backbone polymers were used as initiation sites for the polymerization of ethylene oxide (EO). Potassium tert-butoxide was used for ionization of the active groups, and the polymerization of EO was carried out in dimethyl sulfoxide. The graft copolymers were characterized with respect to molecular weight and composition using elemental analysis, 1H-NMR, gel permeation chromatography, and FTIR. The size of the side chains varied between 300 and 1000 g/mol. Thermal properties were examined by DSC. The graft copolymers showed increasing crystallinity and increasing melt temperature with increasing molecular weight of the side chains. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This paper reported the research results concerning the surface characterization ofpolystyrene-graft-w-stearyl poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-g-SPEO) by means of XPS,contactangle measurement and TEM, and its in vitro blood compatibility assessment by measuringthe plasma recalcification time (RT) and partial thromboplastin time (PTT). The XPSresults demonstrated that the surface and bulk composition of the PS-g-SPEO graftcopolymers differ remarkably from each other, and that SPEO component was constantlyenriched at the copolymer/air interface. Contact angle studies indicated that the surfacewater wettability can be adjusted effectively by changing the composition of the copolymer.PS-g-SPEO graft copolymers can undergo microphase separation as clearly illustrated byTEM photographs. The relationship between the surface properties of PS-g-SPEO graftcopolymer and its blood compatibility was also discussed.  相似文献

Synthesis of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macromonomers carrying a methacyloyl group in one end, and N, N-dimethyl amino, thiophene, styryl and vinyl ether functional groups in the other end was desribed. The general synthetic strategy is based on the living anionic polymerization of ethylene oxide initiated with functional potassium alcoholates, followed by reaction with methacyloyl chloride. These macromonomers were further utilized in various macromolecular architectures through via concurrent or selective thermal free radical, oxidative and photoinitiated free radical and cationic polymerization methods. The use of this synthetic route to prepare graft copolymers possessing completly and perfectly alternating PEO side chains using charge-transfer-complex polymerization was also demonstrated.  相似文献

A series of structurally well-defined poly(ethylene oxide)/hydrophobic C6 branched chitosan surfactant polymers that undergo surface induced self assembly on hydrophobic biomaterial surfaces were synthesized and characterized. The surfactant polymers consist of low molecular weight (Mw) chitosan backbone with hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and hydrophobic hexyl pendant groups. Chitosan was depolymerized by nitrous acid deaminative cleavage. Hexanal and aldehyde-terminated PEO chains were simultaneously attached to low Mw chitosan hydrochloride via reductive amination. The surfactant polymers were prepared with various ratios of the two side chains. The molecular composition of the surfactant polymers was determined by FT-IR and 1H NMR. Surface active properties at the air–water interface were determined by Langmuir film balance measurements. The surfactant polymers with PEO/hexyl ratios of 1:3.0 and 1:14.4 were used as surface modifying agents to investigate their anti-infection properties. E. coli adhesion on Silastic® surface was decreased significantly by the surfactant polymer with PEO/hexyl 1:3.0. Surface growth of adherent E. coli was effectively suppressed by both tested surfactant polymers.  相似文献

Amphiphilic graft copolymers were synthesized via activated ester substitution of derivatives of fumaric acid with amino-functionalized methoxypoly (oxyethylene)s (MPEO-NH2) of different molecular weights. The monomeric activated esters, isopropyl pentachlorophenyl fumarate (PCPFA) and isopropyl succinimido fumarate (SIFA), were copolymerized with styrene (St) or N-vinyl pyrrolidone (VP) at equimolar ratio. The polymeric-activated esters proved to be good precursors for grafting of definite amounts of MPEO-NH2. The aminolysis of the succinimide esters and VP-containing copolymers proceeded with gel formation due to extensive hydrogen bonding. The hydrodynamic behavior, the emulsifying ability, the thermal properties, and crystallinity of the graft copolymers were studied as a function of their molecular characteristics. The length of the PEO grafts and the degree of grafting are the factors which affect the melting parameters and the crystallinity of the side chains. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The grafting of the potassium alkoxide derivative of poly(ethylene oxide) on poly(methyl methacrylate) in homogeneous solution in toluene was studied. The alkoxide was prepared by reaction with potassium metal with methanolic potassium methoxide, or with potassium naphthalene. The last was the most suitable for the systematic investigation of the grafting process. Soluble graft polymers were formed, and essentially the initial poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) participated in the production of graft polymer. The composition of the graft polymers and the frequency of grafting of the side chains were determined by NMR. The solubility of the graft polymers in methanol and water increased with increasing PEO contents, while the melting ranges decreased. Fractionation of the crude graft polymers showed that the grafting reaction was random, and graft polymers containing one PEO side chain per about 10–170 MMA units were obtained.  相似文献

Graft copolymers containing poly(ethylene oxide) side chains on a polystyrene backbone have been synthesized. Styrene copolymers synthesized by free radical mechanism and containing between 5 and 15 mol % acrylamide or methacrylamide were used as backbones. The amide groups in the copolymers were ionized by using potassium tert-butoxide or potassium naphthalene, and grafting was achieved by utilizing the amide anions as initiator sites for the polymerization of ethylene oxide in 2-ethoxyethyl ether at 65°C. The graft copolymers were characterized with respect to molecular weight and composition using elemental analysis, NMR, gel permeation chromatography, IR, and viscosity measurements. The size of the side chains were between 600 and 2000 g/mol. GPC results from a hydrolyzed graft copolymer sample suggest a narrow size distribution for the poly(ethylene oxide) grafts. Solution properties of the graft copolymers were investigated in different toluene/methanol mixtures. The intrinsic viscosities of the graft copolymers were found to depend primarily on the poly(ethylene oxide) content rather than the graft density or the poly(ethylene oxide) chain length. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
