Host–guest structures and properties have been widely studied using relatively small dyes (<1 nm) without bulky groups, due to their smooth incorporation, efficient host–guest interactions, and high analytical accessibility. In this report, on the other hand, three types of sterically demanding organic dyes trapped by a polyaromatic cage were investigated by spectroscopic analyses on the basis of supramolecular interactions. Coumarins with two bulky substituents are bound by the cage in aqueous solution. The resultant caged dyes show unusual emission enhancement, depending on the difference of a single heteroatom in their substituents. The color of perylene bisimides with two bulky substituents is remarkably changed from yellow to red upon caging. This peculiarity stems from the twist of the substituents in the cage, revealed by the combination of absorption and theoretical studies. Furthermore, tetrasubstituted, bulky porphyrins are caught by the cage in aqueous solution. The caged bulky dyes also display altered color and absorption properties, which remain intact even under acidic conditions. In contrast to typical covalent functionalization and previous host–guest studies toward small and non-bulky dyes, the unusual, non-covalent spectroscopic modulation of the large and bulky dyes can be accomplished for the first time by the present cage, featuring a prolate polyaromatic framework with four openings.

Here we report that the open large cavity of an M2L4 polyaromatic cage can efficiently bind sterically demanding organic dyes with coumarin, perylene bisimide, and porphyrin cores in aqueous solution. The spectroscopic properties of the caged dyes are largely modulated in the cavity.  相似文献

Anisotropic expansion of a spherical M2L4 coordination capsule through the elongation of the ligand led to a new M2L′4 capsule. The expanded capsule provides an elliptical cavity encircled by polyaromatic frameworks with large openings and thereby can encapsulate elliptical fullerene C70 and monofunctionalized fullerene C60 in high yields. In addition, selective formation of a new M2L2L′2 capsule occurs by mixing the original M2L4 and expanded M2L′4 capsules in a 1:1 ratio upon addition of C60 or monofunctionalized C60 as a template molecule.  相似文献

The development of energy-saving technology for the efficient separation of olefin and paraffin is highly important for the chemical industry. Herein, we report a self-assembled Fe4L6 capsule containing a hydrophobic cavity, which can be used to encapsulate and separate propylene/propane. The successful encapsulation of propylene and propane by the Fe4L6 cage in a water solution was documented by NMR spectroscopy. The binding constants K for the Fe4L6 cage toward propylene and propane were determined to be (5.0±0.1)×103 M−1 and (2.1±0.7)×104 M−1 in D2O at 25 °C, respectively. Experiments and theoretical studies revealed that the cage exhibited multiple weak interactions with propylene and propane. The polymer-grade propylene (>99.5 %) can be obtained from a mixture of propylene and propane by using the Fe4L6 cage as a separation material in a U-shaped glass tube. This work provides a new strategy for the separation of olefin/paraffin.  相似文献

Preparation of molecular nanostructures with polyradical frameworks remains a significant challenge because of the limited synthetic accessibility which is entirely different from that of neutral and ionic ones. Herein we report the quantitative formation of a new M2L4 molecular capsule from metal ions and dihydrophenazine‐based ligands. The capsule has a spherical nanocavity (ca. 1 nm in diameter) enclosed by eight redox‐active, dihydrophenazine panels. Electrochemical oxidation of the capsule leads to the generation of multiple radical cations on the shell framework. Moreover, a stable tetra(radical cation) capsule can be reversibly obtained by chemical as well as electrochemical oxidation.  相似文献

Chiral nanosized confinements play a major role for enantioselective recognition and reaction control in biological systems. Supramolecular self‐assembly gives access to artificial mimics with tunable sizes and properties. Herein, a new family of [Pd2L4] coordination cages based on a chiral [6]helicene backbone is introduced. A racemic mixture of the bis‐monodentate pyridyl ligand L1 selectively assembles with PdII cations under chiral self‐discrimination to an achiral meso cage, cis‐[Pd2 L1P 2 L1M 2]. Enantiopure L1 forms homochiral cages [Pd2 L1P/M 4]. A longer derivative L2 forms chiral cages [Pd2 L2P/M 4] with larger cavities, which bind optical isomers of chiral guests with different affinities. Owing to its distinct chiroptical properties, this cage can distinguish non‐chiral guests of different lengths, as they were found to squeeze or elongate the cavity under modulation of the helical pitch of the helicenes. The CD spectroscopic results were supported by ion mobility mass spectrometry.  相似文献

We report here a guest-reaction-induced mitosis-like host transformation from a known Pd4L2 cage 1 to a conjoined Pd6L3 twin-cage 2 featuring two separate cavities. The encapsulation of 1-hydroxymethyl-2-naphthol ( G1 ), a known ortho-quinone methide (o-QMs) precursor, within the hydrophobic cavity of cage 1 is found crucial to realize the cage to twin-cage conversion. Confined G1 molecules within the nanocavity undergo self-coupling dimerization reaction to form 2,2′-dihydroxy-1,1′-dinaphthylmethane ( G2 ) which then triggers the cage to twin-cage mitosis. The same conversion also proceeds, in a much faster rate, via the direct templation of G2 , confirming the induced-fit transformation mechanism. The structure of the ( G2 )2⊂ 2 host–guest complex has been established by X-ray crystallographic study, where cis- to trans- conformational switch on one bridging ligand is revealed.  相似文献

An M2L4 coordination capsule or an M2L2 coordination tube was selectively formed by the combination of HgII hinges and bent bispyridine ligands. The two structures reversibly interconvert at room temperature in response to modulation of the metal‐to‐ligand ratio and exhibit different host–guest interaction behavior. The capsule alone encapsulates large spherical molecules, fullerenes C60 and C70, and the bound guests are released upon capsule‐to‐tube transformation by the simple addition of metal ions.  相似文献

An interlocked M_4 L_8 coordination cage was synthesized by coordination-driven self-assembly of palladium(Ⅱ) ions with aromatic amide bidentate ligands. The reaction of the ligand and the metal at 2:1 ratio led to the monomeric M_2 L_4 cage as the kinetic product, while the thermodynamic product M_4 L_8 cage was obtained by prolongating the reaction. This conve rsion and the interlocked structure was clearly revealed by using ~1 H NMR,mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. The driving force of interlocking was mainly attributed to the interactions(hydrogen bonding, aromatic stacking and electrostatic interaction) arising from the aptitude of flexibility of the amide ligand.  相似文献

The sialic acid N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) and its derivatives are involved in many biological processes including cell-cell recognition and infection by influenza. Molecules that can recognize Neu5Ac might thus be exploited to intervene in or monitor such events. A key obstacle in this development is the sparse availability of easily prepared molecules that bind to this carbohydrate in its natural solvent; water. Here, we report that the carbohydrate binding pocket of an organic soluble [Pd2L4]4+ cage could be equipped with guanidinium-terminating dendrons to give the water soluble [Pd2L4][NO3]16 cage 7 . It was shown by means of NMR spectroscopy that 7 binds selectively to anionic monosaccharides and strongest to Neu5Ac with Ka=24 M−1. The cage had low to no affinity for the thirteen neutral saccharides studied. Aided by molecular modeling, the selectivity for anionic carbohydrates such as Neu5Ac could be rationalized by the presence of charge assisted hydrogen bonds and/or the presence of a salt bridge with a guanidinium solubilizing arm of 7 . Establishing that a simple coordination cage such as 7 can already selectively bind to Neu5Ac in water paves the way to improve the stability, affinity and/or selectivity properties of M2L4 cages for carbohydrates and other small molecules.  相似文献

Synthesis of molecular containers capable of incorporating multiple fullerenes remains challenging. Reported here is that room‐temperature mixing of metal ions with W‐shaped bispyridine ligands featuring polyaromatic panels results in the quantitative formation of a peanut‐shaped M2L4 capsule. The capsule reversibly converts into two molecules of an ML2 double tube in response to changes in the solvent. Notably, the capsule allows the incorporation of two fullerene molecules into the connected two spherical cavities at room temperature. The close proximity yet non‐contact of the encapsulated C60 molecules, with a separation of 6.4 Å, was revealed by X‐ray crystallographic analysis. The resultant, unusual fullerene dimer undergoes sequential reduction within the capsule to generate (C60.?)2, C60.??C602?, and (C602?)2 species. Furthermore, temperature‐controlled stepwise incorporation of two C60 molecules into the capsule is demonstrated.  相似文献

This work demonstrates a new nonconventional ligand design, imidazole/pyridine‐based nonsymmetrical ditopic ligands ( 1 and 1 S ), to construct a dynamic open coordination cage from nonsymmetrical building blocks. Upon complex formation with Pd2+ at a 1:4 molar ratio, 1 and 1 S initially form mononuclear PdL4 complexes (Pd2+( 1 )4 and Pd2+( 1 S )4) without formation of a cage. The PdL4 complexes undergo a stoichiometrically controlled structural transition to Pd2L4 open cages ((Pd2+)2( 1 )4 and (Pd2+)2( 1 S )4) capable of anion binding, leading to turn‐on anion binding. The structural transitions between the Pd2L4 open cage and the PdL4 complex are reversible. Thus, stoichiometric addition (2 equiv) of free 1 S to the (Pd2+)2( 1 S )4 open cage holding a guest anion ((Pd2+)2( 1 S )4?G?) enables the structural transition to the Pd2+( 1 S )4 complex, which does not have a cage and thus causes the release of the guest anion (Pd2+( 1 S )4+G?).  相似文献

Self-assembly of a flexible tritopic aniline and 3-substituted 2-formylpyridine subcomponents around iron(II) templates gave rise to a low-spin FeII4L4 capsule, whereas a high-spin FeII3L2 sandwich species formed when a sterically hindered 6-methyl-2-formylpyridine was used. The FeII4L4 cage adopted a new structure type with S4 symmetry, having two mer-Δ and two mer-Ʌ metal vertices, as confirmed by NMR and X-ray crystallographic analysis. The flexibility of the face-capping ligand endows the resulting FeII4L4 framework with conformational plasticity, enabling it to adapt structurally from S4 to T or C3 symmetry upon guest binding. The cage also displayed negative allosteric cooperativity in simultaneously binding different guests within its cavity and at the apertures between its faces.  相似文献

In this work, we report a mechanism by which stereoisomeric and twisted capsules P/M- 1 direct their dynamic chirality in the presence of haloalkane guests. The capsule comprises a static, but twisted, cage that is linked to a dynamic tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPA) lid at its top. From the results of experimental (NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography) and computational (DFT) studies, the TPA lid was shown to assume clockwise (+) and counterclockwise (−) folds with diastereomeric (but racemic) capsules M- 1 (+) and M- 1 (−) interconverting at a rapid rate (ΔG189K=9.1 kcal mol−1). The relative stability of the capsules was found to be a function of guest(s) residing in their interior (243/262 Å3) with small CH2Cl2 (61 Å3) yielding roughly equal population of diastereomeric inclusion complexes. Larger guests, such as CCl4 (89 Å3) and CBr4 (108 Å3), however, formed M- 1 (−)⊂CX4 at the expense of M- 1 (+)⊂CX4 in circa 3:1 ratio. To account for the observation, theory (DFT:M06-2X/6–31+G*) and experiments (1H NMR spectroscopy) were used to deduce that CX4 guests become localized inside the twisted cage of the capsule by forming a C−X⋅⋅⋅π halogen bond [Nc=d/(rH+rX)=0.91–0.92] with the benzene “floor” while encountering electrostatic repulsions with closer naphthalimide boundaries. At last, the TPA lid used its central methylene hydrogens to establish, within the M- 1 (−)⊂CX4, three stabilizing C−H⋅⋅⋅X−C interactions with the guest. The same C−H⋅⋅⋅X−C interactions, however, became weaker (or possibly vanished) after the conformational reorganization of the lid and the formation of less stable M- 1 (+)⊂CX4 complex. On individual basis, C−H⋅⋅⋅X−C intermolecular contacts are weak and hardly detectable in the solution phase. In the case of capsule P/M- 1 , however, these contacts were multivalent and altogether strong enough to direct the host's dynamic chirality.  相似文献

A hexameric metal–organic nanocapsule is assembled from pyrogallol[4]arene units, which are stitched together with indium ions. This indium‐seamed capsule is the first instance of a M24L6 type hexameric coordination cage held together exclusively by trivalent metal ions. Explicitly, unlike previously reported pyrogallol[4]arene‐based metal‐seamed capsules, the current In3+ seamed capsule is entirely supported by O→In coordinate bonds. This work demonstrates the important proof of concept of the ability of pyrogallol[4]arene to react with metals in higher oxidation states to assemble into atomically‐precise hexameric coordination cages. As such, these results open up exciting avenues toward the assembly of previously unanticipated metal–organic capsules, for example offering inspiration for tackling metals exhibiting high valence states such as in the lanthanide and actinide series.  相似文献

To gain insight into the host functions of a nanocavity encircled by both polyaromatic panels and heteroatoms, nitrogen-doped polyaromatic capsules were successfully synthesized from metal ions and pyridine-embedded, bent anthracene-based ligands. The new capsules display unique host–guest interactions in the isolated cavities, which are distinct from those of the undoped analogues. Besides the inclusion of Ag+ ions, the large absorption change of fullerene C60 and altered emission of a BODIPY dimer are observed upon encapsulation by the present hosts. Moreover, the N-doped capsule exhibits specific binding ability toward progesterone and methyltestosterone, known as a natural female and synthetic male hormone, respectively, in water.  相似文献

The self-assembly of nanostructures is dominated by a limited number of strong coordination elements. Herein, we show that metal–acetylene π-coordination of a tripodal ligand (L) with acetylene spacers gave an M3L2 double-propeller motif (M=CuI or AgI), which dimerized into an M6L4 interlocked cage (M=CuI). Higher (M3L2)n oligomers were also selectively obtained: an M12L8 truncated tetrahedron (M=CuI) and an M18L12 truncated trigonal prism (M=AgI), both of which contain the same double-propeller motif. The higher oligomers exhibit multiply entangled facial structures that are classified as a trefoil knot and a Solomon link. The inner cavities of the structures encapsulate counteranions, revealing a potential new strategy towards the synthesis of functional hollow structures that is powered by molecular entanglements.  相似文献

Since the discovery of the G-quadruplex (G4) structure in telomeres in 1980s, studies have established the role it plays in various biological processes. Here we report binding between DNA G4 and a self-assembled tetrahedral metal-organic cage 1 and consequent formation of aggregates, whereby the cage protects the DNA G4 from cleavage by S1 nuclease. We monitor DNA–cage interaction using fluorescence spectroscopy, firstly by quenching of a fluorescent label appended to the 5′ end of G4. Secondly, we detect the decrease in fluorescence of the G4-selective dyes thioflavin-T and Zn-PPIX bound to various DNA G4 sequences following the addition of cage 1. Our results demonstrate that 1 interacts with a wide range of G4s. Moreover, gel electrophoresis, circular dichroism and dynamic light scattering measurements establish the binding of 1 to G4 and indicate the formation of aggregate structures. Finally, we find that DNA G4 contained in an aggregate of cage 1 is protected from cleavage by S1 nuclease.

We find FeII4L4 binds to G-quadruplex and forms aggregates. G-quadruplex in the aggregates is protected from digestion by S1 nuclease.  相似文献
