The use of multigrid convergence acceleration techniques is investigated for supersonic and hypersonic flows over blunt bodies. In these cases detached shock waves occur that usually complicate convergence for multigrid methods. It is shown that a simple damping of the restricted residual error enables convergence without the application of expensive upwind restriction or prolongation operators. The achieved reduction in CPU time increases with increasing free stream Mach number. A similar technique may be used for reactive flows where the restricted residual error is damped in regions of high chemical activity. A spherical nose projectile moving at Mach 6.46 in a stochiometric hydrogen–air mixture serves as a test case to demonstrate the efficiency of this approach in case of combustion. This paper contains a three-dimensional study on the influence of different turbulence models for external supersonic flow field simulations, aiming at reaching the best accuracy in rocket aerodynamics. A well-studied test case -a slender body- has been used for the validation process, which involves the major turbulence models available. The SST k–ω model has been selected as the most suitable one for this kind of flows. Good agreements between numerical, theoretical and experimental results are obtained, which are used to set up some guidelines regarding the configuration of Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) supersonic models for these flight regimes.  相似文献

Presently, improving the accuracy and reducing computational costs are still two major CFD objectives often considered incompatible. This paper proposes to solve this dilemma by developing an adaptive mesh refinement method in order to integrate the 3D Euler and Navier–Stokes equations on structured meshes, where a local multigrid method is used to accelerate convergence for steady compressible flows. The time integration method is a LU‐SGS method (AIAA J 1988; 26: 1025–1026) associated with a spatial Jameson‐type scheme (Numerical solutions of the Euler equations by finite volume methods using Runge–Kutta time‐stepping schemes. AIAA Paper, 81‐1259, 1981). Computations of turbulent flows are handled by the standard k–ω model of Wilcox (AIAA J 1994; 32: 247–255). A coarse grid correction, based on composite residuals, has been devised in order to enforce the coupling between the different grid levels and to accelerate the convergence. The efficiency of the method is evaluated on standard 2D and 3D aerodynamic configurations. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A numerical method for the efficient calculation of three‐dimensional incompressible turbulent flow in curvilinear co‐ordinates is presented. The mathematical model consists of the Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations and the k–ε turbulence model. The numerical method is based on the SIMPLE pressure‐correction algorithm with finite volume discretization in curvilinear co‐ordinates. To accelerate the convergence of the solution method a full approximation scheme‐full multigrid (FAS‐FMG) method is utilized. The solution of the k–ε transport equations is embedded in the multigrid iteration. The improved convergence characteristic of the multigrid method is demonstrated by means of several calculations of three‐dimensional flow cases. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Two methods for coupling the Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes equations with the qω turbulence model equations on structured grid systems have been studied; namely a loosely coupled method and a strongly coupled method. The loosely coupled method first solves the Navier–Stokes equations with the turbulent viscosity fixed. In a subsequent step, the turbulence model equations are solved with all flow quantities fixed. On the other hand, the strongly coupled method solves the Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes equations and the turbulence model equations simultaneously. In this paper, numerical stabilities of both methods in conjunction with the approximated factorization‐alternative direction implicit method are analysed. The effect of the turbulent kinetic energy terms in the governing equations on the convergence characteristics is also studied. The performance of the two methods is compared for several two‐ and three‐dimensional problems. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents manufactured solutions (MSs) for some well‐known eddy‐viscosity turbulence models, viz. the Spalart & Allmaras one‐equation model and the TNT and BSL versions of the two‐equation k–ω model. The manufactured flow solutions apply to two‐dimensional, steady, wall‐bounded, incompressible, turbulent flows. The two velocity components and the pressure are identical for all MSs, but various alternatives are considered for specifying the eddy‐viscosity and other turbulence quantities in the turbulence models. The results obtained for the proposed MSs with a second‐order accurate numerical method show that the MSs for turbulence quantities must be constructed carefully to avoid instabilities in the numerical solutions. This behaviour is model dependent: the performance of the Spalart & Allmaras and k–ω models is significantly affected by the type of MS. In one of the MSs tested, even the two versions of the k–ω model exhibit significant differences in the convergence properties. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

High‐order accurate DG discretization is employed for Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes equations modeling of complex shock‐dominated, unsteady flow generated by gas issuing from a shock tube nozzle. The DG finite element discretization framework is used for both the flow field and turbulence transport. Turbulent flow in the near wall regions and the flow field is modeled by the Spalart–Allmaras one‐equation model. The effect of rotation on turbulence modeling for shock‐dominated supersonic flows is considered for accurate resolution of the large coherent and vortical structures that are of interest in high‐speed combustion and supersonic flows. Implicit time marching methodologies are used to enable large time steps by avoiding the severe time step limitations imposed by the higher order DG discretizations and the source terms. Sufficiently high mesh density is used to enable crisp capturing of discontinuities. A p ? type refinement procedure is employed to accurately represent the vortical structures generated during the development of the flow. The computed solutions showed qualitative agreement with experiments. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The present paper investigates the multigrid (MG) acceleration of compressible Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes computations using Reynolds‐stress model 7‐equation turbulence closures, as well as lower‐level 2‐equation models. The basic single‐grid SG algorithm combines upwind‐biased discretization with a subiterative local‐dual‐time‐stepping time‐integration procedure. MG acceleration, using characteristic MG restriction and prolongation operators, is applied on meanflow variables only (MF–MG), turbulence variables being simply injected onto coarser grids. A previously developed non‐time‐consistent (for steady flows) full‐approximation‐multigrid (s–MG) is assessed for 3‐D anisotropy‐driven and/or separated flows, which are dominated by the convergence of turbulence variables. Even for these difficult test cases CPU‐speed‐ups rCPUSUP∈[3, 5] are obtained. Alternative, potentially time‐consistent approaches (unsteady u–MG), where MG acceleration is applied at each subiteration, are also examined, using different subiterative strategies, MG cycles, and turbulence models. For 2‐D shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction, the fastest s–MG approach, with a V(2, 0) sawtooth cycle, systematically yields CPU‐speed‐ups of 5±½, quasi‐independent of the particular turbulence closure used. This paper describes a new class of three‐dimensional finite difference schemes for high‐speed turbulent flows in complex geometries based on the high‐order monotonicity‐preserving (MP) method. Simulations conducted for various 1D, 2D, and 3D problems indicate that the new high‐order MP schemes can preserve sharp changes in the flow variables without spurious oscillations and are able to capture the turbulence at the smallest computed scales. Our results also indicate that the MP method has less numerical dissipation and faster grid convergence than the weighted essentially non‐oscillatory method. However, both of these methods are computationally more demanding than the COMP method and are only used for the inviscid fluxes. To reduce the computational cost for reacting flows, the scalar equations are solved by the COMP method, which is shown to yield similar results to those obtained by the MP in supersonic turbulent flows with strong shock waves. The development of new aeronautic projects require accurate and efficient simulations of compressible flows in complex geometries. It is well known that most flows of interest are at least locally turbulent and that the modelling of this turbulence is critical for the reliability of the computations. A turbulence closure model which is both cheap and reasonably accurate is an essential part of a compressible code. An implicit algorithm to solve the 2D and 3D compressible Navier–Stokes equations on unstructured triangular/tetrahedral grids has been extended to turbulent flows. This numerical scheme is based on second-order finite element–finite volume discretization: the diffusive and source terms of the Navier–Stokes equations are computed using a finite element method, while the other terms are computed with a finite volume method. Finite volume cells are built around each node by means of the medians. The convective fluxes are evaluated with the approximate Riemann solver of Roe coupled with the van Albada limiter. The standard k–ϵ model has been introduced to take into account turbulence. Implicit integration schemes with efficient numerical methods (CGS, GMRES and various preconditioning techniques) have also been implemented. Our interest is to present the whole method and to demonstrate its limitations on some well-known test cases in three-dimensional geometries. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The method to calculate the aerodynamic stability derivates of aircrafts by using the sensitivity equations is ex- tended to flows with shock waves in this paper. Using the newly developed second-order cell-centered finite volume scheme on the unstructured-grid, the unsteady Euler equations and sensitivity equations are solved simultaneously in a non-inertial frame of reference, so that the aerodynamic stability derivatives can be calculated for aircrafts with complex geometries. Based on the numerical results, behavior of the aerodynamic sensitivity parameters near the shock wave is discussed. Furthermore, the stability derivatives are analyzed for supersonic and hypersonic flows. The numerical results of the stability derivatives are found in good agree- ment with theoretical results for supersonic flows, and variations of the aerodynamic force and moment predicted by the stability derivatives are very close to those obtained by CFD simulation for both supersonic and hypersonic flows.  相似文献

This paper presents the calculated results for three classes of typical modern ships in modelling of ship‐generated waves. Simulations of turbulent free‐surface flows around ships are performed in a numerical water tank, based on the FINFLO‐RANS SHIP solver developed at Helsinki University of Technology. The Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations with the artificial compressibility and the non‐linear free‐surface boundary conditions are discretized by means of a cell‐centred finite‐volume scheme. The convergence performance is improved with the multigrid method. A free surface is tracked using a moving mesh technology, in which the non‐linear free‐surface boundary conditions are given on the actual location of the free surface. Test cases recommended are a container ship, a US Navy combatant and a tanker. The calculated results are compared with the experimental data available in the literature in terms of the wave profiles, wave pattern, and turbulent flow fields for two turbulence models, Chien's low Reynolds number k–εmodel and Baldwin–Lomax's model. Furthermore, the convergence performance, the grid refinement study and the effect of turbulence models on the waves have been investigated. Additionally, comparison of two types of the dynamic free‐surface boundary conditions is made. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley& Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Numerical uncertainties are quantified for calculations of transonic flow around a divergent trailing edge (DTE) supercritical aerofoil. The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations are solved using a linearized block implicit solution procedure and mixing-length turbulence model. This procedure has reproduced measurements around supercritical aerofoils with blunt trailing edges that have shock, boundary layer and separated regions. The present effort quantifies numerical uncertainty in these calculations using grid convergence indices which are calculated from aerodynamic coefficients, shock location, dimensions of the recirculating region in the wake of the blunt trailing edge and distributions of surface pressure coefficients. The grid convergence index is almost uniform around the aerofoil, except in the shock region and at the point where turbulence transition was fixed. The grid convergence index indicates good convergence for lift but only fair convergence for moment and drag and also confirms that drag calculations are more sensitive to numerical error. © 1997 by John Wiley and Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The convergence properties of an iterative solution technique for the Reduced Navier–Stokes equations are examined for two-dimensional steady subsonic flow over bump and trough geometries. Techniques for decreasing the sensitivity to the initial pressure approximation, for fine meshes in particular, are investigated. They are shown to improve the robustness of the relaxation process and to decrease the computational work required to obtain a converged solution. A semi-coarsening multigrid technique that has previously been found to be particularly advantageous for high-Reynolds-number (Re) flows with flow separation and with highly stretched surface-normal grids is applied herein to further accelerate convergence. Solutions are obtained for the laminar flow over a trough that is more severe than has been considered to date. Sufficient axial grid refinement in this case leads to a shock-like reattachment and, for sufficiently large Re, to a local ‘divergence’ of the numerical computations. This ‘laminar flow breakdown’ appears to be related to an instability associated with high-frequency fine-grid modes that are not resolvable with the present modelling. This behaviour may be indicative of dynamic stall or of incipient transition. The breakdown or instability is shown to be controllable by suitable introduction of transition turbulence models or by laminar flow control, i.e. small amounts of wall suction. This lends further support to the hypothesis that the instability is of a physical rather than numerical character and suggests that full three-dimensional analysis is required to properly capture the flow behaviour. Another inference drawn from this investigation is that there is a need for careful grid refinement studies in high-Re flow computations, since coarser grids may yield oscillation-free solutions that cannot be obtained on finer grids.  相似文献

Multigrid and iterative methods are used to reduce the solution time of the matrix equations which arise from the finite element (FE) discretisation of the time‐independent equations of motion of the incompressible fluid in turbulent motion. Incompressible flow is solved by using the method of reduce interpolation for the pressure to satisfy the Brezzi–Babuska condition. The kl model is used to complete the turbulence closure problem. The non‐symmetric iterative matrix methods examined are the methods of least squares conjugate gradient (LSCG), biconjugate gradient (BCG), conjugate gradient squared (CGS), and the biconjugate gradient squared stabilised (BCGSTAB). The multigrid algorithm applied is based on the FAS algorithm of Brandt, and uses two and three levels of grids with a ‘V‐cycling’ schedule. These methods are all compared to the non‐symmetric frontal solver. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents several numerical results using a vectorized version of a 3D finite element compressible and nearly incompressible Euler and Navier–Stokes code. The assumptions were set on laminar flows and Newtonian fluids. The goal of this research is to show the capabilities of the present code to treat a wide range of problems appearing in laminar fluid dynamics towards the unification from incompressible to compressible and from inviscid to viscous flow codes. Several authors with different approaches have tried to attain this target in CFD with relative success. At the beginning the methods based on operator splitting and perturbation were preferred, but lately, with the wide usage of time-marching algorithms, the preconditioning mass matrix (PMM) has become very popular. With this kind of relaxation scheme it is possible to accelerate the rate of convergence to steady state solutions with the modification of the mass matrix under certain restrictions. The selection of the mass matrix is not an easy task, but we have certain freedom to define it in order to improve the condition number of the system. In this paper we have used a physics-based preconditioner for the GMRES implicit solver developed previously by us and an SUPG formulation for the semidiscretization of the spatial operator. In sections 2 and 3 we present some theoretical aspects related to the physical problem and the mathematical model, showing the inviscid and viscous flow equations to be solved and the variational formulation involved in the finite element analysis. Section 4 deals with the numerical solution of non-linear systems of equations, with some emphasis on the preconditioned matrix-free GMRES solver. Section 5 shows how boundary conditions were treated for both Euler and Navier–Stokes problems. Section 6 contains some aspects about vectorization on the Cray C90. The performance reached by this implementation is close to 1 Gflop using multitasking. Section 7 presents several numerical examples for both models covering a wide range of interesting problems, such as inviscid low subsonic, transonic and supersonic regimes and viscous problems with interaction between boundary layers and shock waves in either attached or separated flows. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents an adaptive finite element method for solving incompressible turbulent flows using a k–ϵ model of turbulence. Solutions are obtained in primitive variables using a highly accurate quadratic finite element on unstructured grids. A projection error estimator is presented that takes into account the relative importance of the errors in velocity, pressure and turbulence variables. The efficiency and convergence rate of the methodology are evaluated by solving problems with known analytical solutions. The method is then applied to turbulent flow over a backward-facing step and predictions are compared with experimental measurements. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper describes a method for simulation of viscous flows with a free surface around realistic hull forms with a transom, which has been developed based on a FINFLO RANS solver with a moving mesh. A dry‐transom model is proposed and implemented for the treatment of flows off the transom. The bulk RANS flow with the artificial compressibility is solved by a cell‐centred finite volume multigrid scheme and the free surface deformed by wave motions is tracked by satisfying the kinematic and dynamic free‐surface boundary conditions on the actual location of the surface. The effects of turbulence on flows are evaluated with the Baldwin–Lomax turbulence model without a wall function. A test case is modern container ship model with a transom, the Hamburg Test Case. The calculated results are validated and they agree well with the measured results in terms of the free‐surface waves and the total resistance coefficient. Furthermore, the numerical solutions successfully captured many important features of the complicated interaction of the free surface with viscous flows around transom stern ships. In addition, the convergence performance and the grid refinement studies are also investigated. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper develops a spatial marching method for high-speed flows based on a finite volume approach. The method employs the reduced Navier– Stokes equations and a pressure splitting in the streamwise direction based on the Vigneron strategy. For marching from an upstream station to one downstream the modified five-level Runge–Kutta integration scheme due to Jameson and Schmidt is used. In addition, for shock handling and for good convergence properties the method employs a matrix form of the artificial dissipation terms, which has been shown to improve the accuracy of predictions. To achieve a fast rate of convergence, a local time-stepping concept is used. The method retains the time derivative in the governing equations and the solution at every spatial station is obtained in an iterative manner. The developed method is validated against two test cases: (a) supersonic flow past a flat plate; and (b) hypersonic flow past a compression corner involving a strong viscous–inviscid interaction. The computed wall pressure and wall heat transfer coefficients exhibit good general agreement with previous computations by other investigators and with experiments.  相似文献
