Summary. We describe a method for finding the families of relative equilibria of molecules that bifurcate from an equilibrium point as the angular momentum is increased from 0 . Relative equilibria are steady rotations about a stationary axis during which the shape of the molecule remains constant. We show that the bifurcating families correspond bijectively to the critical points of a function h on the two-sphere which is invariant under an action of the symmetry group of the equilibrium point. From this it follows that for each rotation axis of the equilibrium configuration there is a bifurcating family of relative equilibria for which the molecule rotates about that axis. In addition, for each reflection plane there is a family of relative equilibria for which the molecule rotates about an axis perpendicular to the plane. We also show that if the equilibrium is nondegenerate and stable, then the minima, maxima, and saddle points of h correspond respectively to relative equilibria which are (orbitally) Liapounov stable, linearly stable, and linearly unstable. The stabilities of the bifurcating branches of relative equilibria are computed explicitly for XY 2 , X 3 , and XY 4 molecules. These existence and stability results are corollaries of more general theorems on relative equilibria of G -invariant Hamiltonian systems that bifurcate from equilibria with finite isotropy subgroups as the momentum is varied. In the general case, the function h is defined on the Lie algebra dual {\frak g} * and the bifurcating relative equilibria correspond to critical points of the restrictions of h to the coadjoint orbits in {\frak g} * . This paper presents a new lower bound of on the maximal number of Nash equilibria in d×d bimatrix games, a central concept in game theory. The proof uses an equivalent formulation of the problem in terms of pairs of polytopes with 2d facets in d -space. It refutes a recent conjecture that 2 d -1 is an upper bound, which was proved for d≤4. The first counterexample is a 6×6 game with 75 equilibria. The case d=5 remains open. The result carries the lower bound closer to the previously known upper bound of . Received July 23, 1997, and in revised form June 26, 1998.  相似文献

We analyse the stability properties of mixed equilibria in 2×2 asymmetric games under evolutionary dynamics. With the standard replicator dynamics these equilibria are stable but not asymptotically stable. We modified the replicator dynamics by introducing players of two types: myopies — like in the standard replicator dynamics — and best responders. The behaviour of the latter is described by a continuos time version of the best reply dynamics. Asymptotic convergence under theModified Replicator Dynamics is proved by identifying a strictly decreasing Ljapunov function. We argue that the finding has important implications to justify the use of economic models with mixed strategy equilibria.  相似文献

We prove existence of two nonconstant exponentially stable equilibria to the heat equation supplied with a nonlinear Neumann boundary condition in any smooth n-dimensional domain (n ≥ 2), independently of its geometry. The Neumann boundary condition reflects the fact that the flux on the boundary is proportional to the product of a prescribed bistable function of the density or concentration with an indefinite weight. Such solutions are obtained via variational methods, by minimizing the corresponding energy functional on suitable invariant sets to the semiflow generated by the parabolic problem. But this is possible only if the parameter in the boundary condition is sufficiently large, otherwise we prove using the Implicit Function Theorem the uniqueness of constant equilibrium solutions. The same theorem allows us to derive isolation and smooth dependence on the parameter for nonconstant exponentially stable equilibria found.  相似文献

We examine existence and stability of relative equilibria of the n-vortex problem specialized to the case where N vortices have small and equal circulation and one vortex has large circulation. As the small circulation tends to zero, the weak vortices tend to a circle centered on the strong vortex. A special potential function of this limiting problem can be used to characterize orbits and stability. Whenever a critical point of this function is nondegenerate, we prove that the orbit can be continued via the Implicit Function Theorem, and its linear stability is determined by the eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix of the potential. For N≥3 there are at least three distinct families of critical points associated to the limiting problem. Assuming nondegeneracy, one of these families continues to a linearly stable class of relative equilibria with small and large circulation of the same sign. This class becomes unstable as the small circulation passes through zero and changes sign. Another family of critical points which is always nondegenerate continues to a configuration with small vortices arranged in an N-gon about the strong central vortex. This class of relative equilibria is linearly unstable regardless of the sign of the small circulation when N≥4. Numerical results suggest that the third family of critical points of the limiting problem also continues to a linearly unstable class of solutions of the full problem independent of the sign of the small circulation. Thus there is evidence that linearly stable relative equilibria exist when the large and small circulation strengths are of the same sign, but that no such solutions exist when they have opposite signs. The results of this paper are in contrast to those of the analogous celestial mechanics problem, for which the N-gon is the only relative equilibrium for N sufficiently large, and is linearly stable if and only if N≥7.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a new SIV epidemic model with time delay, which also involves both direct and environmental transmissions. For such model, we first introduce the basic reproduction number $\mathscr{R}$ by using the next generation matrix. And then global stability of the equilibria is discussed by means of Lyapunov functionals and LaSalle''s invariance principle for delay differential equations, which shows that the infection-free equilibrium of the system is globally asymptotically stable if $\mathscr{R}<1$ and the epidemic equilibrium of the system is globally asymptotically stable for $\m  相似文献

We prove the nonlinear stability or instability of certain periodic equilibria of the 1½D relativistic Vlasov‐Maxwell system. In particular, for a purely magnetic equilibrium with vanishing electric field, we prove its nonlinear stability under a sharp criterion by extending the usual Casimir‐energy method in several new ways. For a general electromagnetic equilibrium we prove that nonlinear instability follows from linear instability. The nonlinear instability is macroscopic, involving only the L1‐norms of the electromagnetic fields. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

In this paper, the author proves that the existence of a class of relative equilibria for SO(3)-symmetric n-body problems on a sphere implies that these problems are in fact O(3)-symmetric in a time-reversing sense. Besides this “inverse” result, the author also proves a set of “direct” results, in which the existence of certain symmetric relative equilibria are deduced purely from symmetry considerations of the n-body problems on a sphere. The author then formulates an explicit method for the reduction of this class of symmetric Hamiltonians, which leads to symplectic shape or relative variables for the further study of the relative equilibria and equilibria. This class of problems includes the point vortex problem on a sphere, and the author applies the main results in this paper to that problem. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Selten's concept of perfect equilibrium for normal form games is reviewed, and a new concept of proper equilibrium is defined. It is shown that the proper equilibria form a nonempty subset of the perfect equilibria, which in turn form a subset of the Nash equilibria. An example is given to show that these inclusions may be strict.  相似文献

A new deterministic model for assessing the impact of quarantine on the transmission dynamics of a communicable disease in a two‐patch community is designed. Rigorous analysis of the model shows that the imperfect nature of quarantine (in the two patches) could induce the phenomenon of backward bifurcation when the associated reproduction number of the model is less than unity. For the case when quarantined susceptible individuals do not acquire infection during quarantine, the disease‐free equilibrium of the model is shown to be globally asymptotically stable when the associated reproduction number is less than unity. Furthermore, the model has a unique Patch i‐only boundary equilibrium (i = 1,2) whenever the associated reproduction number for Patch i is greater than unity. The unique Patch i‐only boundary equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable whenever the invasion reproduction number of Patch 3 ? i is less than unity (and the associated reproduction number for Patch i exceeds unity). The model has at least one endemic equilibrium when its reproduction number exceeds unity (and the disease persists in both patches in this case). It is shown that adding multi‐patch dynamics to a single‐patch quarantine model (which allow the quarantine of susceptible individuals) in a single patch does not alter its quantitative dynamics (with respect to the existence and asymptotic stability of its associated equilibria as well as its backward bifurcation property). In this paper, we perform global stability analysis of a multi‐group SEIR epidemic model in which we can consider the heterogeneity of host population and the effects of latency and nonlinear incidence rates. For a simpler version that assumes an identical natural death rate for all groups, and with a gamma distribution for the latency, the basic reproduction number is defined by the theory of the next generation operator and proved to be a sharp threshold determining whether or not disease spread. Under certain assumptions, the disease‐free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if R0≤1 and there exists a unique endemic equilibrium which is globally asymptotically stable if R0>1. The proofs of global stability of equilibria exploit a matrix‐theoretic method using Perron eigenvetor, a graph‐theoretic method based on Kirchhoff's matrix tree theorem and Lyapunov functionals. The character of the transition between the thermal equilibria characterized by different level of anomalous transport is investigated for the laboratory plasmas confined by toroidal magnetic field. The anomalous transport in such plasmas is driven by the instability of drift type, namely by the ion temperature gradient driven turbulence. It is found that both first-order and second-order phase transition is possible in this system dependent on the magnetic field topology. The application of these results for understanding the physical mechanisms of the formation of transport barrier (i.e. steep gradient) on the temperature profile observed in experimental discharges is discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the dynamical behaviors of three human immunodeficiency virus infection models with two types of cocirculating target cells and distributed intracellular delay. The models take into account both short‐lived infected cells and long‐lived chronically infected cells. In the two types of target cells, the drug efficacy is assumed to be different. The incidence rate of infection is given by bilinear and saturation functional responses in the first and second models, respectively, while it is given by a general function in the third model. Lyapunov functionals are constructed and LaSalle invariance principle is applied to prove the global asymptotic stability of all equilibria of the models. We have derived the basic reproduction number R0 for the three models. For the first two models, we have proven that the disease‐free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable (GAS) when R0≤1, and the endemic equilibrium is GAS when R0>1. For the third model, we have established a set of sufficient conditions for global stability of both equilibria of the model. We have checked our theoretical results with numerical simulations. ABSTRACT

A new notion which is called weakly stable module is introduced in this article. It is a nontrivial generalization of the modules with endomorphism rings having stable range one. We deduce that weakly stable projective modules have the cancellation property, and so any commutative hereditary ring has the cancellation property, i.e., if R is a commutative hereditary ring, then for any R-modules B and C, R ⊕ B ? R ⊕ C implies B ? C.  相似文献

We consider Nash equilibria in 2‐player random games and analyze a simple Las Vegas algorithm for finding an equilibrium. The algorithm is combinatorial and always finds a Nash equilibrium; on m × n payoff matrices, it runs in time O(m2nloglog n + n2mloglog m) with high probability. Our result follows from showing that a 2‐player random game has a Nash equilibrium with supports of size two with high probability, at least 1 − O(1/log n). Our main tool is a polytope formulation of equilibria. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Random Struct. Alg., 2007  相似文献
