Synthesis of N-benzoyl L- and D-2,3,6-trideoxy-3-aminoxylo-hexose from non-carbohydrate precursors

The enantiomeric alcohols ($\text{2}$) and ($\text{11}$), obtained from (2$\text{R}$,3$\text{R}$) tartaric acid and, respectively, $\text{L}$-threonine, have been used to construct the C₆, enantiomeric deoxy amino sugar derivatives ($\text{7}$) and ($\text{12}$)     

Synthesis of the enantiomeric forms of cis and trans 1-benzyloxy-2,3-epoxy butane and of (3S,4S) 4-methyl-3-heptanol

The C₄erythro and threo diols (7) and (8) are converted either into the chiral epoxides (13) and (15) or into the enantiomers (14) and (16); the epoxide (13) is used as chiral synthon for the preparation of (3$\text{S}$,4$\text{S}$) 4-methyl-3-heptanol (21).     

Isolation and structures of trans-laurencenyne,a possible precursor of the C15 halogenated cyclic ethers,and trans-neolaurencenyne from laurencia okamurai

Isolation and structural elucidation of two new acetylenic polyenes, $\text{trans}$-laurencenyne $\text{1}$ and $\text{trans}$-neolaurencenyne $\text{2}$ from the marine red alga $\text{Laurencia okamurai}$ were carried out, the former compound $\text{1}$ very recently being proposed to be a biosynthetic precursor of the C₁₅ halogenated cyclic ethers, $\text{7}$ and $\text{8}$.     

The ipso-nitration of p-cresol

The nitration of $\text{p}$-cresol by nitric acid in aqueous sulphuric acid involves ~40% $\text{ipso}$-substitution at C^Me. The 4-methyl-4-nitrocyclohexa-2,5-dien-1-one (I) formed undergoes an acid-catalysed rearrangement to 4-methyl-2-nitrophenol.     

Preparation of halo-F-methanes via potassium fluoride-halogen cleavage of halo-F-methylphosphonium salts

Treatment of halo-$\text{F}$-methylphosphonium salts with potassium fluoride and halogen (I₂, Br₂, ICl, IBr) gives modest yields of halo-$\text{F}$-methanes. This method of preparation augments the classical Hunsdiecker approach to these materials.     

Conformational behaviour and inclusion compound forming properties of 5,18-disubstituted derivatives of 5, 11, 12, 18-tetrahydrotribenzo[b,f,j][1,4]diazacyclododecine-6, 17-dione

An X-ray structure analysis shows that the 5, 18-dimethyl derivative ($\text{5}$) of the title compound ($\text{4}$) crystallises from xylene as a 1:1 inclusion compound in which the host molecules adopt propeller-like conformations ($\text{7}$ and $\text{7}$*) with almost perfect $\text{C}$₂ symmetry. Dynamic ¹H n.m.r. spectroscopy shows that the 5, 18-dibenzyl derivative ($\text{6}$) of ($\text{4}$) forms a 1:1 inclusion compound with ethanol in the solid state and undergoes ring inversion ($\text{7}$ ? $\text{7}$*) between enantiomeric propeller-like conformations in solution against a barrier of 21.1 kcal mol^?1     

A C-glycoside route to leukotrienes

The stereospecific syntheses of three isomers of 7-hydroxy-5,6-epoxy heptanoic acid methyl ester, $\text{7}$, $\text{12b}$ and $\text{19}$, have been achieved via a $\text{C}$-glycoside route.     

Boat-chair conformational preference of exo, exo-9-oxobicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,4-dicarboxylic acid

The ¹H and ¹³C nmr spectra of $\text{exo}$, $\text{exo}$-9-oxobicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,4-dicarboxylic acid, 3, in DMSO-d₆ or alkaline D₂O, clearly show that it exists in a $\text{boat}$-$\text{chair}$-conformation with $\text{equatorial}$ carboxyl groups, thus being the first case of $\text{boat}$-$\text{chair}$ preference of a bicyclo[3.3.1] nonan-9-one due to the presence of $\text{exo}$,$\text{exo}$-2,4- substituents.     

The unexpected intramolecular C-arylation of 2-0-benzylated cyclic sugar derivatives: a useful 1,2-cis-C-glycosylation reaction

Upon treatment with tin(IV) chloride, perbenzylated glycofuranosyl acetates such as 3 or 6 undergo an unusual, intramolecular α-$\text{C}$-arylation resulting from the internal Friedel-Crafts alkylation of the 2-$\text{O}$-benzyl substituent.     

5-Exo-Trig vs 6-Endo-Trig α-acyliminium ion-olefin cyclisations stereoselective synthesis of 7-(1-formyloxy-pent-1-yl)-1-aza-4-oxa-spiro[4.5]decane-2-ones

The two C₆, C₇$\text{trans}$ substituted title compounds have been synthesized via stereoselective 5-$\text{Exo}$-Trig ringclosures starting from (E)-resp. (Z)-4-nonene-1-yl bromide and 3,5-morpholinedione.     

Two chrome derivatives from the brown alga Zonariatournefortii

Two minor lipid components of the brown seaweed $\text{Zonaria}$$\text{tournefortii}$ were characterized as (all Z) - 5′,7′-dihydroxy-2′-nonadeca-4,7,10,13,16-pentenyl-chrome chromone ($\text{3}$) and 5′,7′-dihydroxy-2′-pentadecylchrome ($\text{4}$).     

Steroidal antifeedants from the dorid nudibranch Aldisasanguineacooperi

Two steroids, 3-oxo-chol-4-ene-24-oic acid ($\text{2}$) andi ts unsaturated analog $\text{4}$ have been isolated from the dorid nudibranch $\text{Aldisa}$$\text{sanguinea}$$\text{cooperi}$, and the acid $\text{2}$ has been shown to have antifeedant properties.     

The sterepolides: new isolactaranes from stereumpurpureum

Sterepolide and dihydrosterepolide, new sesquiterpenes isolated from the fungus $\text{Stereum}$$\text{purpureum}$, are assigned structures $\text{4}$ and $\text{7}$, respectively. The assignments are based mainly on spectroscopic studies and similarities to isolactarorufin ($\text{5}$). A possible mode of biogenesis of these isolactarane type sesquiterpenes is discussed.     

Structures of simarinolide and guanepolide (x-ray analysis), new quassinoids from Simaba cf orinocensis

Simarinolide $\text{4a}$ and Guanepolide $\text{5a}$ are new quassinoids with a C₂₅ basic skeleton isolated from a member of the French Guyanan Simaroubaceae, Simaba cf orinocensis H.B.K. The structure $\text{4a}$ was established by spectral means and that of $\text{5a}$ by X-ray diffraction analysis. The previously known simarolide $\text{1}$ was also isolated.     

Electronic spectra of 12-S-CIS conformationally locked retinals

The electronic absorption spectra of the four new 12-$\text{s}$-$\text{cis}$-locked retinals (1a–1d) bearing 7-$\text{trans}$, 11-$\text{trans}$ double bond geometries are described and compared with those of analogous 7-$\text{trans}$, 11-$\text{cis}$-geometries (1e–1h) and parent retinals (2a-h).     

Structure of cypridina biluciferyl,a dimer of cypridina luciferyl radical having bioluminescent activity

Structure of $\text{Cypridina}$ biluciferyl (luciferyl radical dimer), which is produced by chemical oxidation of $\text{C}$. luciferin with such as ferricyanide, was determined to be the symmetric 5,5′-dimer of $\text{C}$. luciferin. It gives light in the presence of $\text{C}$. luciferase, although the bioluminescent rate is very low. We suggest that the biluciferyl is an intermediate in the oxidation of the luciferin to $\text{C}$. luciferinol.     

Synthesis of N-benzoyl-L-ristosamine

The synthesis of N-benzoyl-$\text{L}$-ristosamine (7) from natural tartaric acid through the intermediacy of the δ-$\text{xylo}$ and γ-$\text{ribo}$ lactones (4) and (6) is reported.

Although the hydrochloride of $\text{c}$-4-$\text{t}$-butyl-1-phenyl-$\text{c}$-1-(N-piperidyl)cyclohexane crystallizes in the conformation with axial $\text{t}$-butyl, it exists as an almost equimolar mixture of the two chair conformers in CD₂ Cl₂ solution. The position of equilibrium allows one to calculate ΔG°_{$\text{t}$-Bu} as ?4.9 kcal/mol.     

Reaction of superoxo Co(III) complexes with 2,6-di-t-butyl-p-benzoquinone methides

Superoxo Co(III) complexes derived from Co(Salpr) and [Co(CN)₅]^3? reacted with 2,6-di-$\text{t}$-butyl-$\text{p}$-benzoquinone methides to give 2,6-di-$\text{t}$-butyl-$\text{p}$-benzoquinone and 2,6-di-$\text{t}$-butyl-2,5-cyclohexadienonespirooxiranes as the main products, which are considered to result from nucleophilic attack by the superoxo species on the exo double bond of the quinone methides.     

Conversion of 6-protoilludene into illudin-M and -S by omphalotusolearius

Deuterium labeled $\text{dl}$-6-protoilludene ($\text{7}$) was synthesized and fed to the illudin-producing fungus $\text{Omphalotus}$$\text{olearius}$ (ATCC 11719). The hydrocarbon ($\text{7}$) was incorporated into illudin-M ($\text{2}$) and -S ($\text{3}$).
