97—98学年是我的学术休假年,因上海交大的邀请,来交大应用数学系工作．我在美国工作的学校—威斯康星州立大学—LaCrosse校区的数学系曾在美国自然科学基金会资助下搞微积分教学改革,主要是传统的微积分教学与计算机使用的相结合,使原来的理论学习变为计算机屏幕上可见的图形,从而加深了学生的印象,也使学生更能理解和掌握．微积分作为一门大学生入学时的基础课,能打好计算机的基础很重要,为以后学习其他需要与计算机结合的课程打下了良好的基础．另外,由于计算机的迅速发展,其他的数学学科,如数值分析、微分方程、数理统计等…

The purpose of this paper is to describe the mathematics that emanates from the construction of an origami box. We first construct a simple origami box from a rectangular sheet and then discuss some of the mathematical questions that arise in the context of geometry and calculus.     

2011年研究生建模竞赛B题的评阅综述

本题从一项科研项目中提炼、并结合目前成为关注热点的隐身技术而设计,侧重于数学建模.结合题中的2个问题,可以抽象出3个平时比较少见的数学模型:几何模型,反射投影模型和积分方程模型.在竞赛中,前2个模型都有部分同学正确地得出,可惜的是,问题2所要求的积分方程模型,在近500份答卷,却无人得出,甚为遗憾.问题2属于一个需要同时确定数个彼此关联影响的函数的问题,处理这样问题的基本方法是建立以这些函数为变量的方程组,在这里由于确定相互影响的定量关系必须用积分,所以最终得出的是一个积分方程组.微分积分是大学数学中最基本最重要的概念和方法,由此不难看出,我们的基础教育中的弊病与问题,这需要引起有识之士们的反思.

Some nearly Boolean orthomodular posets

Let be an orthomodular partially ordered set (``a quantum logic"). Let us say that is nearly Boolean if is set-representable and if every state on is subadditive. We first discuss conditions under which a nearly Boolean OMP must be Boolean. Then we show that in general a nearly Boolean OMP does not have to be Boolean. Moreover, we prove that an arbitrary Boolean algebra may serve as the centre of a (non-Boolean) nearly Boolean OMP.

     

Mathematical foundations of a cultural project or Ramchandra's treatise “through the unsentimentalised light of mathematics”

The nineteenth century witnessed a number of projects of cultural rapprochement between the knowledge traditions of the East and West. This paper discusses the attempt to render elementary calculus amenable to an Indian audience in the indigenous mathematical idiom, undertaken by an Indian polymath, Ramchandra. The exercise is specifically located in his book A Treatise on the Problems of Maxima and Minima. The paper goes on to discuss the “vocation of failure” of the book within the context of encounter and the pedagogy of mathematics.

In this paper we present two types of deformation of the algebra of abstract vector variables, which may be useful for quantum geometry.

The Fractional Calculus for Some Stochastic Processes

Abstract

The integration and differentiation of fractional orders are well known concepts for deterministic functions (see Miller, K.S.; Ross, B. An Introduction to Fractional Calculus and Fractional Differential Equations; John Wiley: New York, 1993; I. Podlubny and Ahmed M.A. El-Sayed, On two definitions of fractional calculus Slovak Academy of Sciences Institute of experimental Phys. UEF-03-96 ISBN 80-7099-252-2, 1996; Podlubny, I. Fractional Differential Equations; Acad. Press: San Diego – New York, London etc. 1999; Samko, S.G.; Kilbas, A.A.; Marichev, O. Integral and derivatives of the fractional orders and some of their applications. Nauka i Teknika Minisk 1983). In earlier work, we have studied the fractional calculus for mean square continuous stochastic processes. In this work, we shall study the mean square (m.s.) fractional calculus for stochastic processes which are m.s. Riemann-integrable and prove some its properties.
