This paper deals with fast and reliable numerical solution methods for the incompressible non-Newtonian Navier-Stokes equations. To handle the nonlinearity of the governing equations, the Picard and Newton methods are used to linearize these coupled partial differential equations. For space discretization we use the finite element method and utilize the two-by-two block structure of the matrices in the arising algebraic systems of equations. The Krylov subspace iterative methods are chosen to solve the linearized discrete systems and the development of computationally and numerically efficient preconditioners for the two-by-two block matrices is the main concern in this paper. In non-Newtonian flows, the viscosity is not constant and its variation is an important factor that affects the performance of some already known preconditioning techniques. In this paper we examine the performance of several preconditioners for variable viscosity applications, and improve them further to be robust with respect to variations in viscosity.  相似文献

In this paper, we study a class of tuned preconditioners that will be designed to accelerate both the DACG–Newton method and the implicitly restarted Lanczos method for the computation of the leftmost eigenpairs of large and sparse symmetric positive definite matrices arising in large‐scale scientific computations. These tuning strategies are based on low‐rank modifications of a given initial preconditioner. We present some theoretical properties of the preconditioned matrix. We experimentally show how the aforementioned methods benefit from the acceleration provided by these tuned/deflated preconditioners. Comparisons are carried out with the Jacobi–Davidson method onto matrices arising from various large realistic problems arising from finite element discretization of PDEs modeling either groundwater flow in porous media or geomechanical processes in reservoirs. The numerical results show that the Newton‐based methods (which includes also the Jacobi–Davidson method) are to be preferred to the – yet efficiently implemented – implicitly restarted Lanczos method whenever a small to moderate number of eigenpairs is required. We propose block ILU (incomplete LU) factorization preconditioners for a nonsymmetric block-tridiagonal M-matrix whose computation can be done in parallel based on matrix blocks. Some theoretical properties for these block ILU factorization preconditioners are studied and then we describe how to construct them effectively for a special type of matrix. We also discuss a parallelization of the preconditioner solver step used in nonstationary iterative methods with the block ILU preconditioners. Numerical results of the right preconditioned BiCGSTAB method using the block ILU preconditioners are compared with those of the right preconditioned BiCGSTAB using a standard ILU factorization preconditioner to see how effective the block ILU preconditioners are.  相似文献

Convergence results are provided for inexact two‐sided inverse and Rayleigh quotient iteration, which extend the previously established results to the generalized non‐Hermitian eigenproblem and inexact solves with a decreasing solve tolerance. Moreover, the simultaneous solution of the forward and adjoint problem arising in two‐sided methods is considered, and the successful tuning strategy for preconditioners is extended to two‐sided methods, creating a novel way of preconditioning two‐sided algorithms. Furthermore, it is shown that inexact two‐sided Rayleigh quotient iteration and the inexact two‐sided Jacobi‐Davidson method (without subspace expansion) applied to the generalized preconditioned eigenvalue problem are equivalent when a certain number of steps of a Petrov–Galerkin–Krylov method is used and when this specific tuning strategy is applied. We consider additive two‐level preconditioners, with a local and a global component, for the Schur complement system arising in non‐overlapping domain decomposition methods. We propose two new parallelizable local preconditioners. The first one is a computationally cheap but numerically relevant alternative to the classical block Jacobi preconditioner. The second one exploits all the information from the local Schur complement matrices and demonstrates an attractive numerical behaviour on heterogeneous and anisotropic problems. We also propose two implementations based on approximate Schur complement matrices that are cheaper alternatives to construct the given preconditioners but that preserve their good numerical behaviour. Through extensive computational experiments we study the numerical scalability and the robustness of the proposed preconditioners and compare their numerical performance with well‐known robust preconditioners such as BPS and the balancing Neumann–Neumann method. Finally, we describe a parallel implementation on distributed memory computers of some of the proposed techniques and report parallel performances. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Preconditioned Krylov subspace (KSP) methods are widely used for solving large‐scale sparse linear systems arising from numerical solutions of partial differential equations (PDEs). These linear systems are often nonsymmetric due to the nature of the PDEs, boundary or jump conditions, or discretization methods. While implementations of preconditioned KSP methods are usually readily available, it is unclear to users which methods are the best for different classes of problems. In this work, we present a comparison of some KSP methods, including GMRES, TFQMR, BiCGSTAB, and QMRCGSTAB, coupled with three classes of preconditioners, namely, Gauss–Seidel, incomplete LU factorization (including ILUT, ILUTP, and multilevel ILU), and algebraic multigrid (including BoomerAMG and ML). Theoretically, we compare the mathematical formulations and operation counts of these methods. Empirically, we compare the convergence and serial performance for a range of benchmark problems from numerical PDEs in two and three dimensions with up to millions of unknowns and also assess the asymptotic complexity of the methods as the number of unknowns increases. Our results show that GMRES tends to deliver better performance when coupled with an effective multigrid preconditioner, but it is less competitive with an ineffective preconditioner due to restarts. BoomerAMG with a proper choice of coarsening and interpolation techniques typically converges faster than ML, but both may fail for ill‐conditioned or saddle‐point problems, whereas multilevel ILU tends to succeed. We also show that right preconditioning is more desirable. This study helps establish some practical guidelines for choosing preconditioned KSP methods and motivates the development of more effective preconditioners.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss two classes of parameterized block triangular preconditioners for the generalized saddle point problems. These preconditioners generalize the common block diagonal and triangular preconditioners. We will give distributions of the eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix and provide estimates for the interval containing the real eigenvalues. Numerical experiments of a model Stokes problem are presented.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the possibility of using a block‐triangular preconditioner for saddle point problems arising in PDE‐constrained optimization. In particular, we focus on a conjugate gradient‐type method introduced by Bramble and Pasciak that uses self‐adjointness of the preconditioned system in a non‐standard inner product. We show when the Chebyshev semi‐iteration is used as a preconditioner for the relevant matrix blocks involving the finite element mass matrix that the main drawback of the Bramble–Pasciak method—the appropriate scaling of the preconditioners—is easily overcome. We present an eigenvalue analysis for the block‐triangular preconditioners that gives convergence bounds in the non‐standard inner product and illustrates their competitiveness on a number of computed examples. For a class of block two-by-two systems of linear equations with certain skew-Hamiltonian coefficient matrices, we construct additive block diagonal preconditioning matrices and discuss the eigen-properties of the corresponding preconditioned matrices. The additive block diagonal preconditioners can be employed to accelerate the convergence rates of Krylov subspace iteration methods such as MINRES and GMRES. Numerical experiments show that MINRES preconditioned by the exact and the inexact additive block diagonal preconditioners are effective, robust and scalable solvers for the block two-by-two linear systems arising from the Galerkin finite-element discretizations of a class of distributed control problems.  相似文献

Newton's method for the incompressible Navier—Stokes equations gives rise to large sparse non-symmetric indefinite matrices with a so-called saddle-point structure for which Schur complement preconditioners have proven to be effective when coupled with iterative methods of Krylov type. In this work we investigate the performance of two preconditioning techniques introduced originally for the Picard method for which both proved significantly superior to other approaches such as the Uzawa method. The first is a block preconditioner which is based on the algebraic structure of the system matrix. The other approach uses also a block preconditioner which is derived by considering the underlying partial differential operator matrix. Analysis and numerical comparison of the methods are presented. This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We consider the iterative solution of linear systems arising from four convection–diffusion model problems: scalar convection–diffusion problem, Stokes problem, Oseen problem and Navier–Stokes problem. We design preconditioners for these model problems that are based on Kronecker product approximations (KPAs). For this we first identify explicit Kronecker product structure of the coefficient matrices, in particular for the convection term. For the latter three model cases, the coefficient matrices have a 2 × 2 block structure, where each block is a Kronecker product or a summation of several Kronecker products. We then use this structure to design a block diagonal preconditioner, a block triangular preconditioner and a constraint preconditioner. Numerical experiments show the efficiency of the three KPA preconditioners, and in particular of the constraint preconditioner that usually outperforms the other two. This can be explained by the relationship that exists between these three preconditioners: the constraint preconditioner can be regarded as a modification of the block triangular preconditioner, which at its turn is a modification of the block diagonal preconditioner based on the cell Reynolds number. A class of multi-level preconditioners and corresponding preconditioned block AOR iterative method are presented and studied in this paper. We analyze the convergence performance of the new method and give the comparison theorems for different preconditioning level. Numerical results further verify our theoretical analysis and show that the proposed method has faster convergence speed than existing preconditioned block AOR method.  相似文献

We study nonstationary iterative methods for solving preconditioned systems arising from discretizations of the convection–diffusion equation. The preconditioners arise from Gauss–Seidel methods applied to the original system. It is shown that the performance of the iterative solvers is affected by the relationship of the ordering of the underlying grid and the direction of the fow associated with the differential operator. Specifically, only those orderings that follow the fow give fast iterative solvers. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq 13 :321–330  相似文献

The scattered data interpolation problem in two space dimensions is formulated as a partial differential equation with interpolating side conditions. The system is discretized by the Morley finite element space. The focus of this paper is to study preconditioned iterative methods for the corresponding discrete systems. We introduce block diagonal preconditioners, where a multigrid operator is used for the differential equation part of the system, while we propose an operator constructed from thin plate radial basis functions for the equations corresponding to the interpolation conditions. The effect of the preconditioners are documented by numerical experiments.  相似文献

Based on the PMHSS preconditioning matrix, we construct a class of rotated block triangular preconditioners for block two-by-two matrices of real square blocks, and analyze the eigen-properties of the corresponding preconditioned matrices. Numerical experiments show that these rotated block triangular preconditioners can be competitive to and even more efficient than the PMHSS pre-conditioner when they are used to accelerate Krylov subspace iteration methods for solving block two-by-two linear systems with coefficient matrices possibly of nonsymmetric sub-blocks.  相似文献

An inexact Newton algorithm for large sparse equality constrained non-linear programming problems is proposed. This algorithm is based on an indefinitely preconditioned smoothed conjugate gradient method applied to the linear KKT system and uses a simple augmented Lagrangian merit function for Armijo type stepsize selection. Most attention is devoted to the termination of the CG method, guaranteeing sufficient descent in every iteration and decreasing the number of required CG iterations, and especially, to the choice of a suitable preconditioner. We investigate four preconditioners, which have 2 × 2 block structure, and prove theoretically their good properties. The efficiency of the inexact Newton algorithm, together with a comparison of various preconditioners and strategies, is demonstrated by using a large collection of test problems. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper deals with boundary‐value methods (BVMs) for ordinary and neutral differential‐algebraic equations. Different from what has been done in Lei and Jin (Lecture Notes in Computer Science, vol. 1988. Springer: Berlin, 2001; 505–512), here, we directly use BVMs to discretize the equations. The discretization will lead to a nonsymmetric large‐sparse linear system, which can be solved by the GMRES method. In order to accelerate the convergence rate of GMRES method, two Strang‐type block‐circulant preconditioners are suggested: one is for ordinary differential‐algebraic equations (ODAEs), and the other is for neutral differential‐algebraic equations (NDAEs). Under some suitable conditions, it is shown that the preconditioners are invertible, the spectra of the preconditioned systems are clustered, and the solution of iteration converges very rapidly. The numerical experiments further illustrate the effectiveness of the methods. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper continues some recent work on the numerical solution of the steady incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. We present a new method, similar to the one presented in Rebholz et al., but with superior convergence and numerical properties. The method is efficient as it allows one to solve the same symmetric positive‐definite system for the pressure at each iteration, allowing for the simple preconditioning and the reuse of preconditioners. We also demonstrate how one can replace the Schur complement system with a diagonal matrix inversion while maintaining accuracy and convergence, at a small fraction of the numerical cost. Convergence is analyzed for Newton and Picard‐type algorithms, as well as for the Schur complement approximation.  相似文献

Boundary value methods (BVMs) for ordinary differential equations require the solution of non‐symmetric, large and sparse linear systems. In this paper, these systems are solved by using the generalized minimal residual (GMRES) method. A block‐circulant preconditioner with circulant blocks (BCCB preconditioner) is proposed to speed up the convergence rate of the GMRES method. The BCCB preconditioner is shown to be invertible when the BVM is Ak1,k2‐stable. The spectrum of the preconditioned matrix is clustered and therefore, the preconditioned GMRES method converges fast. Moreover, the operation cost in each iteration of the preconditioned GMRES method by using our BCCB preconditioner is less than that required by using block‐circulant preconditioners proposed earlier. In numerical experiments, we compare the number of iterations of various preconditioners. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
