A method was developed to deagglomerate commercially available multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) bundles while maintaining the carbon nanotube aspect ratio. The process utilizes the rapid expansion of a supercritical carbon dioxide/MWCNT mixture to separate large primary carbon nanotube agglomerates. High levels of deagglomeration of Baytubes® C 150 P and Nanocyl? NC-7000 MWCNT bundles were observed on the macroscale and nanoscale, resulting in 30-fold and 50-fold decreases in bulk density, respectively, with median agglomerate sizes <8 μm in diameter. These results were obtained while retaining the aspect ratio of the as-received nanomaterial, irrespective of the MWCNT agglomerate morphology. It was found that a temperature and pressure of 40 °C and 7.86 MP resulted in maximum deagglomeration without damage to the MWCNTs. Thermodynamic principles were applied to describe the effect of processing variables on the efficiency of the deagglomeration. These results suggest that combining this process with a composite processing step, such as melt compounding, will result in nanocomposites with enhanced electrical properties.  相似文献

Abstract

A series of polycarbonate (PC)/acrilonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR)/multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared via melt compounding in an internal mixer. The effect of the MWCNT content on the morphology and the thermal and mechanical properties of the prepared nanocomposites were studied. The morphologies of the samples were investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and the thermal properties by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The tensile mechanical results of the nanocomposites showed a decrease in elongation at break with an increase of only 2?wt% of MWCNT content in the PC/NBR blends, and an increasing value in elastic modulus and tensile strength of the nanocomposites. The FESEM images showed that the MWCNTs had good affinity with the polymers and no compatibilizer was needed for making the nanocomposites. The DSC and TGA results showed an increase in thermal stability with addition of MWCNTs because of the more thermally stable carbon nanotubes particles which was uniformly dispersed within the nanocomposites.  相似文献

Highly dispersed platinum nanoparticles were deposited on gram quantities of non-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by atomic layer deposition (ALD) in a fluidized bed reactor at 300 °C. (Methylcyclopentadienyl) trimethylplatinum and oxygen were used as precursors. The results of TEM analysis showed that ~1.3 nm Pt nanoparticles were highly dispersed on non-functionalized MWCNTs. The porous structures of MWCNTs did not change with the deposition of Pt nanoparticles. For comparison, the commercial 3 wt% Pt/C catalyst was also characterized. The ALD-prepared Pt/MWCNT was used for the hydrogenation of xylose to xylitol. The ALD-prepared Pt/MWCNT showed the best catalytic performance with 100 % conversion of xylose and 99.3 % selectivity to xylitol, compared to commercially available Pt/C, Ru/C, and Raney Ni catalysts. The stability of ALD produced Pt/MWCNT catalyst was higher than that of the commercial Pt/C, due to the presence of surface defects on the MWCNTs and the strong metal–support interaction for the ALD-prepared Pt/MWCNT catalyst.  相似文献

A novel polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane containing phosphorus and boron (PB-POSS) was synthesized. The resulting PB-POSS and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were incorporated into an epoxy resin (EP) to prepare PB-POSS/MWCNTs/EP composites through a solution mixing method. The synergistic effect of MWCNTs and PB-POSS on the thermal and mechanical properties and the flame retardancy of these flame retardant composites were studied. The experimental results showed that the introduction of PB-POSS or MWCNTs further improved the LOI values of the epoxy resin, and the highest LOI value (32.8%) was obtained for the formulation containing 14.6 wt% PB-POSS and 0.4 wt% MWCNTs. In addition, the incorporation of both PB-POSS and MWCNTs significantly improved the thermal and mechanical properties of the composites. The mechanical properties of composites containing 14.7 wt% PB-POSS and 0.3 wt% MWCNTs reached the maximum. The impact strength and flexural strength increased by 42% and 7%, respectively, compared to the neat epoxy resin. Thus, a combination of PB-POSS and MWCNTs in the appropriate ratio could effectively enhance the thermal and mechanical properties and the flame retardancy of the epoxy resin matrix.  相似文献

Copper was chosen as quaternary additions in the range of 1–5 wt% to the ternary alloy Sn-9Zn-1Bi lead-free solder alloy. X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy and differential thermal analysis have been carried out. Resistivity, Vickers microhardness and yield strength have been measured. The results showed that formation of Cu-Sn intermetallic compounds takes place due to additions of Cu, which affected the electrical resistivity and improved mechanical properties of this alloy. Also, addition of copper upto 2 wt% caused grain refinement and decreased the melting point of this alloy by 2 °C.  相似文献

This study aimed at investigating the effect of adding copper (Cu) on some properties of the lead-free alloys which rapidly solidified from melt. X-ray analysis, hardness, elastic modulus, electrical conductivity and resistivity were studied. The results indicated that the alloy hardness and elastic modulus improved by increasing the copper (Cu) content and decreasing the zinc (Zn) content. The electrical conductivity ranged from 0.250 to 0.847?×?107 ohm?1 m?1 for the alloy under study. The electrical resistivity increases linearly with temperature until the melting point is reached. The residual resistivity results from disturbances in the lattice rather than caused by thermal vibration and the most drastic increases in the residual resistivity are caused by foreign atoms in solid solution with matrix metal. The electrical resistivity values ranged from 11.8 to 40?×?10?8 ohm m, when the copper content changed from 0.0 to 2.0 wt% and zinc changed from 8.0 to 10.0 wt%.  相似文献

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites reinforced with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and nano-silicon dioxide (SiO2) fillers were evaluated for flame retardancy and thermal properties for cable and wire applications. In this study, the filler percentages of MWCNT and nano-SiO2 have varied from 0 to 5 wt% in HDPE composite with polyethylene-grafted glycidyl methacrylate compatibilizer and 3-aminopropyl triethoxy silane coupling agent. Addition of MWCNT’s and nano-SiO2 to the HDPE composite is observed to enhance the limiting oxygen index and char formation. Cone calorimeter results also show a 53% reduction in the peak heat release rate of the HDPE composite with 5 wt% of MWCNT. The existence of synergism between the uniformly dispersed MWCNT and nano-SiO2 has been verified using Finite Element Method (FEM)-based thermal simulations.  相似文献

Linear viscoelastic properties and dielectric behavior of poly(1‐butene)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were investigated. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed significant increase in storage modulus in the rubbery regime. The tan δ peak temperature remained constant; however, the peak intensity was lowered for the nanocomposites. In melt rheological studies the nanocomposites showed a shift in crossover frequency to the lower side, suggesting delayed relaxation of the molecular chains in the presence of MWCNT and this shift was found to depend on the content of MWCNT. The dielectric constant increased from 2.2 to 70 for the nanocomposite with 7 wt. % MWCNT. The electrical conductivity increased significantly, from 10?15 to 10?3 S/cm. The results of rheology and dielectric studies indicate that a percolation network is formed that is responsible for the observed changes.  相似文献

Nanoparticles can be added to metals to tune their properties for numerous applications. Recently extensive research has been conducted to measure the mechanical properties of nanoparticle reinforced metals. However, few theories exist to understand how nanoparticles interact with metals to affect their electrical performance, partly due to the difficulty in producing bulk metal samples, containing dispersed nanoparticles. In this work, copper and copper alloys (Cu, Cu-40 wt% Zn, and Cu-60 wt% Ag) containing dispersed tungsten carbide (WC) nanoparticles of more than 20 vol% were successfully fabricated via solidification processing. The experimental results show that copper and its alloys with an increasing volume fraction of nanoparticles, the electrical conductivity of the samples decays exponentially. Therefore, a theoretical model, compatible with the Nordheim's rule was established to predict the electrical behaviour of metals containing dispersed nanoparticles. This new model on the electrical behaviour of copper nanocomposites is experimentally validated by low-temperature resistivity measurements and electronic heat capacity measurements above Debye temperature.  相似文献

Two series of hybrid polyimide (PI)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared including COOH-functionalized or pristine nanotubes, and their structure, morphology and dynamics/mechanical properties at 20°C–500°C were studied using WAXD (Wide-angle X-ray diffraction), AFM (Atomic force microscopy), TEM (transmission electron microscopy), DSC (Differential scanning calorimetry), DMA (Dynamic mechanical analysis), CRS (creep rate spectroscopy) techniques, and stress–strain testing. The impact of nanofiller loadings of 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, or 1 wt% relative to PI was evaluated. Specific changes in the matrix morphology and different quality of nanotube dispersion in the nanocomposites with amorphous and semicrystalline matrices were determined. The best nanotube dispersion was observed in the composites with 0.5 wt% MWCNT-COOH. A peculiar high temperature dynamics, different for amorphous, and semicrystalline matrices, was revealed in these nanocomposites. The most dramatic changes in high temperature dynamics and a pronounced dynamic heterogeneity as well as substantially enhanced mechanical properties at room temperature were revealed in the case of a semicrystalline PI matrix. The results were treated in terms of the synergistic impact of nanotubes and matrix crystallites on dynamics in the intercrystalline regions of PI (“combined constrained dynamics effect”) and the peculiar interfacial dynamics.  相似文献

High density polyethylene (HDPE)/poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) (90/10 wt.%) blends and HDPE/PET/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing process, and the influence of MWCNTs on the mechanical and rheological properties of the nanocomposites was investigated. MWCNTs were added up to 5 wt.% in the HDPE/PET matrix. Transmission electron microscopy images reveal that the MWCNTs were homogeneously dispersed in the HDPE/PET matrix. Improvement of mechanical properties was observed by the addition of MWCNTs compared with HDPE/PET blends. Prominent increases in the complex viscosity and storage modulus of the nanocomposites were found with increasing MWCNT content.  相似文献

The influence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the crystallization and directional tensile properties of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) was studied for samples prepared by dynamic-packing injection molding (DPIM). Oscillatory shear was imposed on the gradually cooled melt during the packing solidification stage of DPIM. For the oriented composites containing 1.8 wt% MWCNTs, the tensile fracture behavior showed typical brittle features along the flow direction (FD) and perpendicular direction (PD), which were almost the same as those that occurred in oriented pure HDPE. The elongation at break along both directions decreased due to the incorporation of MWNCTs in the oriented composites compared with the oriented pure HDPE. However, the tensile strength of the oriented HDPE/MWCNT composites was greatly improved along the FD due to the presence of carbon nanotubes; meanwhile, it was not weakened along the PD. In scanning electron microscopy observations, it was found that there were some oriented hybrid shish-kebab structures in a nanometre scale in the oriented HDPE/MWCNT composites, but not in its isotropic composites. This suggests that MWCNTs were involved in the shear-induced crystallization of HDPE. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements confirmed that the crystallinity of oriented HDPE composites with 1.8 wt% MWCNTs was higher than those of isotropic HDPE and isotropic composites, but was not obviously higher than that of oriented pure HDPE. These findings demonstrate that MWCNTs indeed affected the formation of crystalline structures, but did not greatly influence the crystallinity of HDPE under shear flow. The transition of crystalline morphology might be the reason for change in tensile behavior for the oriented HDPE/MWCNT composites compared with the oriented pure HDPE.  相似文献

High aspect ratio multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) reinforced low density polyethylene (LDPE) composites were prepared by solvent casting followed by compression molding technique. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) of these composites was investigated in the frequency range of 12.4?C18 GHz (Ku-band) for the first time. The experimental results indicate that the EMI-SE of these composites is sensitive to the MWCNT loading. The average value of EMI-SE reaches 22.4 dB for 10 wt% MWCNT-LDPE composites, indicating the usefulness of this material for EMI shielding in the Ku-band. The main reason for improved SE has been attributed to significant improvement in the electrical conductivity of the composites by 20 orders of magnitude, i.e., from 10?20 for pure LDPE to 0.63 S/cm for MWCNT-LDPE, which is three order of magnitude higher than the previous reports for MWCNT-LDPE composites. Differential scanning calorimetry of the MWCNT-LDPE composites showed around 37% improvement in the crystalline contents over pure LDPE samples which resulted into enhanced thermal stability of the composites. The thermal decomposition temperature of LDPE is shifted by 40 °C on addition of 5 wt% MWCNT. The studies therefore show that these composite can be used as light weight, thermally stable EMI shielding, and antistatic material.  相似文献

Thermodynamic, electrical and optical studies have been carried out on a discotic liquid crystal (DLC), namely 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11-hexabutyloxytriphenylene (possessing columnar phase) and its copper nanoparticles (0.6 wt%) based composite. The ionic conductivity of DLC–copper nanocomposite has increased by about two orders of magnitude as compared to the pure system. Dielectric permittivity has also increased. The absorption spectra for pure and nanocomposites have been studied by UV–Vis spectrophotometer. The optical study suggests that surface plasmon resonance has been introduced in DLC due to the incorporation of copper nanoparticles. It has been observed that the presence of nanoparticles has decreased the optical band gap to 3.3 eV from 4.2 eV of the pure DLC. Enhanced properties are useful for one-dimensional conduction and photovoltaic applications.  相似文献

Experimental confirmation for the stronger interaction of Ni with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) compared to Cu with MWCNTs is presented. The interfaces between Cu (Ni) nanoparticles side-on oriented onto MWCNTs are analyzed with high spatial resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) of the carbon K-edge. The EEL spectra reveal a rehybridization from sp2 to sp3 hybridized carbon of the outermost MWCNT layer at the Ni interface, but no such rehybridization can be observed at the Cu interface. The EELS results are supported by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, which show a better wetting behavior of Ni and a smaller gap at the Ni–MWCNT interface, as compared to the corresponding Cu interfaces. The different behavior of Cu and Ni can be explained in terms of differing valence d-orbital occupancy. For the successful experimental demonstration of this effect the use of a soft chemical metal deposition technique is crucial.  相似文献

Exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (xGnP) filled 4,4'-Bis (3,4-dicyanophenoxy) biphenyl (BPh) nanocomposites were prepared by a resin transfer molding process. The rheological behavior of the BPh pre-polymer, and the morphology and electrical, mechanical and thermal properties of the xGnP/BPh nanocomposites were systematically investigated. The results showed that the xGnP/BPh pre-polymer possessed a higher complex viscosity and storage modulus than the pure BPh and that the xGnP could significantly enhance the mechanical and electrical properties of the resulted nanocomposites. The electrical percolation threshold of the xGnP/BPh nanocomposites was between 5 and 10 wt% xGnP. The flexural strength and modulus of the xGnP/BPh nanocomposites with 10 wt% xGnP exhibited maximum values and their thermal stabilities were greatly improved. Those novel xGnP/BPh nanocomposites could have advanced applications in areas like aerospace and military industry.  相似文献

Linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) nanocomposites were prepared via melt blending. The morphology and degree of dispersion of nanotubes in the polyethylene matrix were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Both individual and agglomerates of MWNTs were evident. The rheological behavior and mechanical and electrical properties of the nanocomposites were studied using a capillary rheometer, tensile tester, and Tera ohm‐meter, respectively. Both polyethylene and its nanocomposites showed non‐Newtonian behavior in almost the whole range of shear rate. Addition of carbon nanotubes increased shear stress and shear viscosity. It was also found that the materials experience a fluid‐solid transition below 1 wt% MWNT. Flow activation energy for the nanocomposites was calculated using an Arrhenius type equation. With increasing nanotube content, the activation energy of flow increases. A decrease of about 7 orders of magnitude was obtained in surface and volume resistivity upon addition of 5 wt% MWNT. In addition, a difference between electrical and rheological percolation thresholds was observed. The results confirm the expected nucleant effect of nanotubes on the crystallization process of polyethylene. A slight increase in Young's modulus was also observed with increasing MWNT content.  相似文献

A rapid microwave-assisted method was developed for the purification, cutting and unzipping of arrays of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using a mixture of KMnO4 and H2SO4. To harness the extent of treatment, MWCNT products were fully characterized at different reaction times by UV-visible and Raman spectroscopies as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopies. The results show that the carbon nanoparticles and the amorphous carbon which coated the MWCNTs were removed after about 10 minutes. The excessive oxidation of MWCNTs then leads to cutting and unzipping of graphitic walls. Moreover, while the catalyst residues outside the MWCNTs were rapidly extracted up to 10 minutes, the removal of catalyst residues inside the MWCNTs did not begin before 20 minutes. This method can be considered as an efficient route for the purification, cutting and unzipping of MWCNTs due to its fast and controllable procedure.  相似文献

This paper reports on the dispersion stability of 150 nm polyvinyl alcohol coated biochar nanoparticles in brine water. Biochar is a renewable, carbon based material that is of significant interest for enhanced oil recovery operations primarily due to its wide ranging surface properties, low cost of synthesis, and low environmental toxicity. Nanoparticles used as stabilizing agents for foams (and emulsions) or in nanofluids have emerged as potential alternatives to surfactants for subsurface applications due to their improved stability at reservoir conditions. If, however, the particles are not properly designed, they are susceptible to aggregation because of the high salinity brines typical of oil and gas reservoirs. Attachment of polymers to the nanoparticle surface, through covalent bonds, provides steric stabilization, and is a necessary step. Our results show that as the graft density of polyvinyl alcohol increases, so too does the stability of nanoparticles in brine solutions. A maximum of 34 wt% of 50,000 Da polyvinyl alcohol was grafted to the particle surface, and the size of the particles was reduced from ~3500 nm (no coating) to 350 nm in brine. After 24 h, the particles had a size of ~500 nm, and after 48 h completely aggregated. 100,000 Da PVA coated at 24 wt% on the biochar particles were stable in brine for over 1 month with no change in mean particle size of ~330 nm.  相似文献

Copper nanoparticle/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) hybrid material could be fabricated by microwave irradiation to a suspension of MWCNTs dispersed in copper precursor with the presence of ethylene glycol. Microscopic and spectroscopic analyses could confirm the uniform dispersion of copper oxide nanoparticles hybridized on the outer surface of MWCNTs. Reduction of Cu2+ ions to Cu2O and Cu nanoparticles was ascribed to functional groups which were generated after the precursor was irradiated by microwave. Sufficient irradiation time of 5 min or longer played an important role to induce the agglomeration of copper oxide nanoparticles on the MWCNT surface.  相似文献
