The ferroin-catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky(BZ) reaction, the oxidation of malonic acid by acidic bromate,is the most commonly investigated chemical system for understanding spatial pattern forma-tion. Various oscillatory behaviors were found from such as mixed-mode and simple period-doubling oscillations and chaos on both Pt electrode and Br-ISE at high flow rates to mixed-mode oscillations on Br-ISE only at low flow rates. The complex dynamic behaviors were qualitatively reproduced with a two-cycle coupling model proposed initially by Gy?rgyi and Field. This investigation offered a proper medium for studying pattern formation under complex temporal dynamics. In addition,it also shows that complex oscillations and chaos in the BZ reaction can be extended to other bromate-driven nonlinear reaction systems with different metal catalysts. 相似文献

A new theory of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction, the Radicalator model, is presented. This model is based on a negative feedback loop involving a fast reaction between malonyl and bromine dioxide radicals. Experimental evidence for the validity of the model is given for BZ systems in 3 M and 1 M sulfuric acid solution. 相似文献

The excitation of the photosensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction induced by light stimulation was systematically investigated. A stepwise increase in the light intensity induced the excitation, whereas a stepwise decrease did not induce the excitation. The threshold values for the excitation were found to be a function of the initial and final light intensities, time variation in light intensity, and the concentration of NaBrO(3). The experimental results were qualitatively reproduced by a theoretical calculation based on a three-variable Oregonator model modified for the photosensitive BZ reaction. These results suggest that although the steady light irradiation is known to inhibit oscillation and chemical waves in the BZ system under almost all conditions, the stepwise increase in the light irradiation leads to the rapid production of an activator, resulting in the photoexcitation. 相似文献

The ferroin-catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction was studied in a batch reactor under anaerobic conditions and was found to evolve through two separated regimes of complex oscillations. Significantly, the two bifurcation regimes exhibited qualitatively different dependence on compositions of the reaction mixture, i.e., initial concentrations of bromate, sulfuric acid, malonic acid, and ferroin. The reaction temperature also showed opposite effects on the two bifurcation regimes, in which complexities of the first bifurcation regime were enhanced while oscillations in the second bifurcation regime became simpler as a result of decreasing temperature. Numerical simulations with a 12-variable model developed specifically for the ferroin-BZ system were able to reproduce transient complex oscillations observed in experiments. These calculations further illustrated that reactions such as ferroin and HOBr, ferroin and HBrO2, and ferriin and Br- were not essential in describing complex dynamics of the ferroin-BZ reaction. 相似文献

Several substrates have been employed in different oscillatory systems. A serious limitation is the low solubility in water. This has been overcome by employing aqueous-organic mixed media in the iodate-system as well as the uncatalyzed and catalyzed [Ce(III) or Ferroin] systems. The present paper deals with the study of fifteen new substrates in the bromate-Mn(II) oscillatory system employing aqueous-organic mixed media.

Three new types of discontinuously propagating waves are reported in the bathoferroin-catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction dispersed in water-in-oil Aerosol OT microemulsion. Jumping waves (JWs) are typically observed at or above room temperature and develop from the familiar trigger waves. Bubble waves (BWs) typically emerge from trigger or JWs at similar temperatures, while rotating waves (RWs) evolve from JW at higher temperatures (>40 degrees C). All these waves propagate discontinuously in a saltatory fashion. Other characteristic features include a discontinuous front for BW consisting of small concentric waves (bubbles) and lateral rotation of annular RWs. All three types of waves, as well as segmented but continuously propagating waves, can coexist. A simple model that is able to describe both jumping and segmented waves is described. 相似文献

The unstirred, ferroin (Fe(phen)3(2+)) catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction is the prototype oscillatory chemical system. Reaction media with added Br(-) appear red (reduced, low [Fe(phen)3(3+)]) during an induction period of several minutes, followed by the "spontaneous" formation of "pacemaker" sites, which oscillate between a blue, oxidized state (high [Fe(phen)3(3+)]) and the red, reduced state and generate target patterns of concentric, outwardly moving waves of oxidation (blue). Auto-oscillatory behavior is also seen in the Oregonator model of Field, Koros and Noyes (FKN), a robust, reduced model that captures qualitative BZ kinetics in the auto-oscillatory regime. However, the Oregonator model predicts a blue (oxidized) induction phase. Here we develop a generalized Oregonator-like model with no explicit bifurcation parameter that yields the observed transition from a red initial state to oscillatory dynamics, and displays a new bifurcation mechanism not seen in the original Oregonator. 相似文献

Oscillations in the platinum redox potential during the reaction of bromate ions with acetonedicarboxylic acid catalyzed by Mn(II) ions were observed. The volume of gaseous carbon dioxide produced was measured. A nonoscillatory course was found both at the slow and rapid stirring rates for carbon dioxide evolution. The perturbation experiments suggest supersaturation during the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction with acetonedicarboxylic acid. Possible reasons for such observations are discussed. 相似文献

Noise can stabilize a metastable state in such a way that the system remains in this state for a longer time than in the absence of noise. When this phenomenon is observed in chaos, it is called "noise-induced order." We have experimentally detected noise-induced order in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. That is, when noise is added to the chaos with the flow rate near the period-three oscillation, a decrease of the maximum Lyapunov exponent and a convergence of the Fourier spectrum are observed. Moreover, the analysis on the one-dimensional return map reveals that noise-induced order is caused by the convergence of the chaotic trajectory into the laminar region. 相似文献

The effects of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on the spatio-temporal and temporal dynamics of the ferroin-catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction have been studied over a wide surfactant concentration range. For the first time, investigations were performed also for unstirred systems. The presence of SDS in the reaction mixture influences the oscillatory parameters to an extent that significantly depends on the surfactant concentration. The trend of the wave speed v upon the increasing amount of SDS was found to have a maximum at [SDS] = 0.075 mol dm (-3) ( v = 0.071 mm s (-1)), after which the speed decreased to 0.043 mm s (-1) at [SDS] = 0.5 mol dm (-3), which is below the value found in the absence of the surfactant ( v = 0.055 mm s (-1)). The response of the oscillatory BZ system to the addition of SDS has been ascribed to two different causes: (a) the peculiar capability of the organized surfactant assemblies to affect the reactivity by selectively sequestering some key reacting species and (b) the modifications induced by SDS on the physical properties of the medium. These hypotheses have been corroborated by performing spectrophotometric investigations on the stirred BZ system. Complementary viscosity measurements gave useful hints for the clarification of the surfactant role. 相似文献

The propagation of traveling chemical waves in the excitable Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) system when performed in the presence of 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidyl choline (DPPC) bilayers responds sensitively to the phospholipid content. The characteristic features of wave propagation, such as spiral pitch, rotation period, and size of the spiral core region, show two regions of different behavior, one below and the other above a DPPC content of 12.5% (w/w) thus suggesting a transition in the organization of the lipid domains at a DPPC content of ~12.5% (w/w). This transition is supported by small-angle X-ray scattering data, which show pronounced changes in the coherence lengths of the lyotropic smectic domains. Thus, the dynamics of the chemical system occurring at a macroscopic length scale reflects the organization of the water/lipid domains which extend over mesoscopic lengths. These findings indicate that in the BZ/DPPC system, there is an interaction between processes that occurs at length scales differing by as much as 3 orders of magnitude. 相似文献

The Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction dispersed in water-in-oil aerosol OT (AOT) microemulsion has been studied at small radius R(d) of water nanodroplets (R(d) (nm) congruent with0.17omega,omega = [H(2)O][AOT] = 9). Stationary spotlike and labyrinthine Turing patterns are found close to the fully oxidized state. These patterns, islands of high concentration of the reduced state of the Ru(bpy)(3) (2+) catalyst, can coexist either with "black" reduction waves or, under other conditions, with the "white" oxidation waves usually observed in the BZ reaction. The experimental observations are analyzed with the aid of a new Oregonator-like model and qualitatively reproduced in computer simulations. 相似文献

Refractive index measurement using an interferometric imaging system and observation of chemical wave shapes were carried out during chemical wave propagation of a cerium-catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. Densities increased as chemical waves propagated in samples without NaBr, and decreased in samples with NaBr. Concentration changes of malonic acid, bromomalonic acid, and BrO3- were estimated from Raman spectral measurements in a stirred batch BZ reaction, and these also exhibited differences between samples with and without NaBr. It is proposed that a reaction subset yielding low molecular weight carboxylic acids is predominant in samples with NaBr, whereas a pathway leading to dibromoacetic acid or tribromoacetic acid production is the major process in samples without NaBr. 相似文献

The photosensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction was investigated on a circular ring, which was drawn using computer software and then projected on a film soaked with BZ solution using a liquid-crystal projector. Under the initial conditions, a chemical wave propagated with a constant velocity on the black ring under a bright background. When the background was rapidly changed to dark, coexistence of the oscillation on part of the ring and propagation of the chemical wave on the other part was observed. These experimental results are discussed in relation to the nature of the photosensitive BZ reaction and theoretically reproduced based on a reaction-diffusion system using the modified Oregonator model. 相似文献

CO and CO2 evolution was measured in a cerium and in a ferroin-catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. These gases were stripped from the reaction mixture by a N2 carrier gas, mixed with H2, converted to methane on a Ni catalyst, and then measured by a flame ionization detector (FID). CO could be detected separately by absorbing CO2 on a soda lime column. In separate experiments it was proven that CO is produced in a reaction of BrO2* radicals with bromomalonic acid (BrMA). To this end BrO2(.-) radicals were generated in two different ways: (i) in the reaction HBrO2 + HBrO3 <--> 2 BrO2(.-) + H2O and (ii) by reducing HBrO3 to BrO2(.-) by Fe(2+). It was found that (.-)OH radicals--produced by Fenton's reagent--can also generate CO from BrMA. We propose that CO can be formed when an inorganic radical (like BrO2(.-) or (.-)OH) reacts with the enol form of BrMA producing an acyl radical which decarbonylates in the next step. Malonic acid (MA)-BrMA mixtures were prepared by a new method modifying Zaikin and Zhabotinsky's original recipe to minimize the production of dibromomalonic acid (Br2MA). 相似文献

We report the successful use of Ru(II)(terpy)(2) (1, terpy = 2,2':6',2'-terpyridine) as a catalyst in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) oscillating chemical reaction. We also examine several additional Ru(II) complexes, Ru(II)(bipy)(2)(L')(2) (2, L' = 4-pyridinecarboxylic acid; bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine) and Ru(II)(bipy)(2)(L') (3, L' = 4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipy; 4, L' = N-allyl-4'-methyl-[2,2'-bipy]-4-carboxamide; 5, L' = bipy), for catalyzing the BZ reaction. While 2 is unable to trigger BZ oscillations, probably because of the rapid loss of L' in a BZ solution, the other bipyridine-based Ru(II)-complexes can catalyze the BZ reaction, although their catalytic activity is adversely affected by slow ligand substitution in a BZ solution. Nevertheless, the successfully tested Ru(II)(terpy)(2) and Ru(II)(bipy)(2)(L') catalysts may provide useful building blocks for complex functional macromolecules. 相似文献
