Let G be a group and let n be a positive integer. A polynomial function in G is a function from G n to G of the form , where f(x 1, . . . , x n ) is an element of the free product of G and the free group of rank n freely generated by x 1, . . . , x n . There is a natural definition for the product of two polynomial functions; equipped with this operation, the set of polynomial functions is a group. We prove that this group is polycyclic if and only if G is finitely generated, soluble, and nilpotent-by-finite. In particular, if the group of polynomial functions is polycyclic, then necessarily it is nilpotent-by-finite. Furthermore, we prove that G itself is polycyclic if and only if the subgroup of polynomial functions which send (1, . . . , 1) to 1 is finitely generated and soluble.   相似文献

Let be an almost crystallographic (AC-) group, corresponding to the simply connected, connected, nilpotent Lie group and with holonomy group . If , there is a faithful representation . In case is crystallographic, this condition is known to be equivalent to or . We will show (Example 2.2) that, for AC-groups , this is no longer valid and should be adapted. A generalised equivalent algebraic (and easier to verify) condition is presented (Theorem 2.3). Corresponding to an AC-group and by factoring out subsequent centers we construct a series of AC-groups, which becomes constant after a finite number of terms. Under suitable conditions, this opens a way to represent faithfully in (Theorem 4.1). We show how this can be used to calculate . This is of importance, especially, when is almost Bieberbach and, hence, is known to have an interesting geometric meaning.

In the paper, necessary and sufficient conditions for an Abelian group A to be isomorphic to the endomorphism group End(A) are obtained. The classes of periodic Abelian groups, divisible Abelian groups, nonreduced Abelian groups, and reduced algebraically compact Abelian groups are considered. For certain classes of Abelian groups, the isomorphism problem for a group and its endomorphism group is solved under the assumption that the endomorphism group itself has the corresponding property.  相似文献

We prove that certain permutation characters for the symmetric group Σn decompose in a manner that is independent of n for large n. This result is a key ingredient in the recent work of T. Church and B. Farb, who obtain a “representation stability” theorem for the character of Σn acting on the cohomology Hp(Pn,C) of the pure braid group Pn.  相似文献

For an abelian Hausdorff group , let denote the character group endowed with the compact-open topology and let denote the canonical homomorphism. We show that the evaluation mapping from into the torus is continuous if and only if is locally compact and is continuous. If is injective and open, then the evaluation mapping is continuous if and only if is locally compact. Several examples and counterexamples are given.

We consider the Brauer group of a group (finite or infinite) over a commutative ring with identity. A split exact sequence


is obtained. This generalizes the Fröhlich-Wall exact sequence from the case of a field to the case of a commutative ring, and generalizes the Picco-Platzeck exact sequence from the finite case of to the infinite case of . Here is the Brauer-Taylor group of Azumaya algebras (not necessarily with unit). The method developed in this paper might provide a key to computing the equivariant Brauer group of an infinite quantum group.

In this paper we describe how one can obtain Lie group structures on the group of (vertical) bundle automorphisms for a locally convex principal bundle P over the compact manifold M. This is done by first considering Lie group structures on the group of vertical bundle automorphisms Gau(P). Then the full automorphism group Aut(P) is considered as an extension of the open subgroup DiffP(M) of diffeomorphisms of M preserving the equivalence class of P under pull-backs, by the gauge group Gau(P). We derive explicit conditions for the extensions of these Lie group structures, show the smoothness of some natural actions and relate our results to affine Kac-Moody algebras and groups.  相似文献

Torsion-free covers are considered for objects in the category q 2. Objects in the category q 2 are just maps in R-Mod. For R = ℤ, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the coGalois group G(AB), associated to a torsion-free cover, to be trivial for an object AB in q 2. Our results generalize those of E. The purpose of this paper is to show the vastness of the class of generalized strongly monomial groups and the implication of its study on monomiality questions studied by group theorists. Necessary and sufficient conditions on f are determined which makes it possible to endow A with a binary operation ? such that (A,?) is a cyclic group and f∈Aut(A). This result is extended to all abelian groups in case |A| = p2, p a prime.
