Urine uranium concentrations are the best biological indicator for identifying exposure to depleted uranium (DU). Internal exposure to DU causes an increased amount of urine uranium and a decreased ratio of 235U/238U in urine samples, resulting in measurements that vary between 0.00725 and 0.002 (i.e., natural and depleted uraniums 235U/238U ratios, respectively). A method based on inductively coupled plasma dynamic reaction cell mass spectrometry (ICP-DRC-MS) was utilized to identify DU in urine by measuring the quantity of total U and the 235U/238U ratio. The quantitative analysis was achieved using 233U as an internal standard. The analysis was performed both with and without the reaction gas oxygen. The reaction gas converted ionized 235U+ and 238U+ into 235UO2+ (m/z=267) and 238UO2+ (m/z=270). This conversion was determined to be over 90% efficient. A polyatomic interference at m/z 234.8 was successfully removed from the 235U signal under either DRC operating conditions (with or without oxygen as a reaction gas). The method was validated with 15 urine samples of known uranium compositions. The method detection limit for quantification was determined to be 0.1 pg U mL–1 urine and an average coefficient of variation (CV) of 1–2% within the sample measurements. The method detection limit for determining 235U/238U ratio was 3.0 pg U mL–1 urine. An additional 21 patient samples were analyzed with no information about medical history. The measured 235U/238U ratio within the urine samples correctly identified the presence or absence of internal DU exposure in all 21 patients. The opinions and assertions expressed herein are those of the authors and are not to be construed as official or as representing the views of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, the Department of the Army, or the Department of Defense  相似文献

Recent advances in inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) have included the addition of interference reduction technologies, such as collision and reaction cells, to improve its detection capability for certain elements that suffer from polyatomic interferences. The principle behind reaction cell (RC)-ICP-MS is to remove a particular polyatomic interference by dissociation or formation of a different polyatomic species that no longer interferes with the analyte of interest. However, some interferences cannot be removed by commonly reported reaction gases, such as hydrogen, oxygen, or methane, necessitating using more reactive and hazardous gases, such as ammonia. The current study investigates oxygen as a reaction gas in RC-ICP-MS to specifically react with vanadium analyte ions, rather than the interferents, to produce a polyatomic analyte species and thereby provide a way to analyze for vanadium in complex environmental matrices. The technique has been tested on a series of river water, tap water, and synthetic laboratory samples, and shown to be successful in vanadium analyses in high chloride and sulfate matrices. The zinc isobaric interference on the new vanadium oxide analyte at m/z 67 is also investigated, and can be corrected by using a standard mathematical correction equation. The results of this study further increase the utility of RC-ICP-MS analytical techniques for complex environmental matrices.  相似文献

The determination of naturally occurring and anthropogenic radionuclides in the environment by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry has gained recognition over the last fifteen years, relative to radiometric techniques, as the result of improvement in instrumental performance, sample introduction equipment, and sample preparation. With the increase in instrumental sensitivity, it is now possible to measure ultratrace levels (fg range) of many radioisotopes, including those with half-lives between 1 and 1000 years, without requiring very complex sample pre-concentration schemes. However, the identification and quantification of radioisotopes in environmental matrices is still hampered by a variety of analytical issues such as spectral (both atomic and molecular ions) and non-spectral (matrix effect) interferences and instrumental limitations (e.g., abundance sensitivity). The scope of this review is to highlight recent analytical progress and issues associated with the determination of radionuclides by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The impact of interferences, instrumental limitations (e.g., degree of ionization, abundance sensitivity, detection limits) and low sample-to-plasma transfer efficiency on the measurement of radionuclides by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry will be described. Solutions that overcome these issues will be discussed, highlighting their pros and cons and assessing their impact on the measurement of environmental radioactivity. Among the solutions proposed, mass and chemical resolution through the use of sector-field instruments and chemical reactions/collisions in a pressurized cell, respectively, will be described. Other methods, such as unique sample introduction equipment (e.g., laser ablation, electrothermal vaporisation, high efficiency nebulization) and instrumental modifications/optimizations (e.g., instrumental vacuum, radiofrequency power, guard electrode) that improve sensitivity and performance will also be examined.  相似文献

A method for the determination of sixteen elements (Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Sn, V, Zn) in seafood by dynamic reaction cell inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP–DRC–MS) is presented. A preliminary study of polyatomic interferences was carried out in relation to the chemical composition of marine organisms belonging to different taxa. Acid effects and other matrix effects in marine organisms submitted to closed-vessel microwave digestion were investigated as well. Ammonia was the reactive gas used in the DRC to remove polyatomic ions interfering with 27Al, 52Cr, 56Fe and 51V. Optimal conditions for the simultaneous determination of analytes were identified in order to develop a fast multielement method. A suite of real samples (mussels and various fish species) were used during method development along with three certified reference materials: BCR CRM 278R (mussel tissue), BCR CRM 422 (cod muscle) and DORM-2 (dogfish muscle). The proposed analytical approach can be used in conjunction with suitable chemometric procedures to address quality and safety issues in aquaculture and fisheries. As an example, a case study is described in which mussels from three farming sites in the Venice Lagoon were distinguished by multivariate analysis of element fingerprints.   相似文献

In this study we developed a dried-droplet method for laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The proposed method provides accurate and precise results when building calibration curves and determining elements of interest in real liquid samples. After placing just 1 μL of a liquid standard solution or a real sample onto the filter surface and then converting the solution into a very small, thin dry spot, the sample could be applied as an analytical subject for LA. To demonstrate the feasibility of this proposed method, we used LA-ICP-MS and conventional ICP-MS to determine the levels of 13 elements (Li, V, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Cd, Sb, Tl, and Pb) in five water samples. The correlation coefficients obtained from the various calibration curves ranged from 0.9920 (205Tl) to 0.9998 (51V), sufficient to allow the determination of a wide range of elements in the samples. We also investigated the effects of Methylene Blue (MB) and the NaCl concentration on the elemental analyses. MB could be used as an indicator during the ablation process; its presence in the samples only negligibly influenced the intensities of the signals of most of the tested elements. Notably, high NaCl contents led to signal suppression for some of the elements. In comparison with the established sample introduction by nebulization, our developed technique abrogates the need for time-consuming sample preparation and reduces the possibility of sample contamination.  相似文献

Assessing changes in heavy metals concentrations in Antarctic snow dated from the last century is of high interest to determine to which extent the most remote regions of our planet are contaminated for these metals, and to have a better understanding into their long-range transport from the different natural and anthropogenic source areas to the Antarctic continent. Such investigations are unfortunately very difficult because the concentrations to be measured are exceedingly low, down to the sub-picogram per gram level. They require a strict control of contamination problems from field sampling to laboratory analysis, and the use of ultrasensitive analytical techniques.

We present here important advances in the analytical protocols for obtaining reliable data on the occurrence of heavy metals in Antarctic snow. Utmost precautions were taken to obtain a series of large size ultraclean snow blocks from the wall of a 8.3 m clean hand-dug pit at a remote site in Coats Land, Antarctica. These blocks were then sub-sampled inside a laminar flow clean bench in a cold room, using ultraclean protocols, to provide high-resolution heavy metal times series. V, Cr, Mn, Cu, Ag, Ba, Pb, Bi and U were then determined directly, without any pre-concentration step, by the ultrasensitive inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometry (ICP-SFMS) technique in clean room conditions. Calibration of the instrument was performed using ultralow concentrations standards, and extreme precautions were taken to ensure the cleanliness of the instrument and its introduction system. The results show that it is possible to accurately measure a variety of heavy metals in Antarctic snow, down to the sub-picogram per gram level, using this approach. Examples of the data obtained for the Coats Land site are finally presented. For U, the observed concentrations range from 0.004 to 0.21 pg/g; they are the first data ever obtained for this metal for Antarctic snow and ice.  相似文献

Lithium was determined in human serum by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Sample preparation was kept to the minimum: serum samples were diluted and beryllium was added as internal standard. Special attention was given to the choice of the internal standard and to the occurrence of memory effects. To test the accuracy of the method several biological reference materials were analysed, namely a “Second-Generation” Biological Reference Material (Freeze-Dried Human Serum) (University of Ghent), Human Serum SRM 909, Whole Egg Powder SRM 1845 and Mixed Human Diet SRM 1548 (National Institute of Standards and Technology). The results were compared with those obtained by other techniques. For the “second-generation” reference freeze-dried human serum a mean lithium concentration of 15.10 ng g?1 with a standard deviation of 0.54 ng g?1 dry weight was found. Analyses on serum samples from healthy individuals yielded lithium concentrations ranging from 0.22 to 0.97 μg l?1.  相似文献

Ammonium uranates (AU) obtained by the addition of aqueous NH4 OH to a solution of UO2 (NO3)2 or the equilibrium reaction of UO3 · 2H2 O with the vapour over concentrated NH4 OH have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (DR-FTIR) and chemical analysis. Ammonia can be present as either NH3 or NH 4 + . For precipitates obtained at a pH of 3.7, ammonia in the form of NH3 is predominant. For ammonium uranate obtained by reaction over concentrated NH4OH, most of the ammonia is bonded as NH 4 + . The reaction mechanism and structures of the products are also discussed.  相似文献

An ion chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric (IC-ICP-MS) method for the speciation of selenium and tellurium compounds namely selenite [Se(IV)], selenate [Se(VI)], Se-methylselenocysteine (MeSeCys), selenomethione (SeMet), tellurite [Te(IV)] and tellurate [Te(VI)] is described. Chromatographic separation is performed in gradient elution mode using 0.5 mmol L(-1) ammonium citrate in 2% methanol (pH 3.7) and 20 mmol L(-1) ammonium citrate in 2% methanol (pH 8.0). The analyses are carried out using dynamic reaction cell (DRC) ICP-MS. The DRC conditions have also been optimized to obtain interference free measurements of (78)Se(+) and (80)Se(+) which are otherwise interfered by (38)Ar(40)Ar(+) and (40)Ar(40)Ar(+), respectively. The detection limits of the procedure are in the range 0.01-0.03 ng Se mL(-1) and 0.01-0.08 ng Te mL(-1), respectively. The accuracy of the method has been verified by comparing the sum of the concentrations of individual species obtained by the present procedure with the total concentration of the elements in two NIST SRMs Whole Milk Powder RM 8435 and Rice Flour SRM 1568a. The selenium and tellurium species are extracted from milk powder and rice flour samples by using Protease XIV at 70 degrees C on a water bath for 30 min.  相似文献

A method was developed for the determination of 99Tc at low concentrations in clay samples. The chemical treatment of the samples prior to chemical separation and analysis comprised leaching with sulphuric acid/ sodium bromate. After leaching, pertechnetate was extracted with Alamine-336/chloroform and then back-extracted into nitric acid. Detection was carried out using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, ICP-MS. The instrumental detection limit was 0.45 pg/mL, which corresponds to 0.28 mBq/mL. With the use of a desolvating nebuliser, the detection limit was lowered by about a factor of five. The results were compared with a method using radiometric detection.  相似文献

A time-saving and accurate technique for determining226Ra in groundwater and soil was examined, using high-resolution inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS). The technique was applied to the determination of226Ra in groundwater and soil samples and compared with the conventional liquid scintillation counting method. This technique was capable of completing226Ra counting within 3 minutes, without the in-growth period to allow radon and its progeny to achieve secular equilibrium with the parent226Ra. The detection limits of HR-ICP-MS for226Ra in groundwater and soil were 0.19 mBq·1−1 and 0.75 Bq·kg−1, respectively, which were about 10 times lower than that of the liquid scintillation counter. The results obtained from HR-ICP-MS in groundwater and soil were in accordance with those of LSC within a relative error of about 13%.  相似文献

An analytical procedure for direct introduction of biodiesel samples into an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) by using microemulsion for sample preparation was developed here. Cadmium, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Ti, and Zn were determined in biodiesel microemulsified samples prepared from different oleaginous sources (African palm, castor beans, palm, soybeans and an unknown oleaginous). Microemulsions were prepared using 0.25 mL Triton X-100, 0.25 mL 20% v v− 1 HNO3, 0.50 mL biodiesel sample and 4.0 mL n-propanol. Argon-oxygen mixture was added to the plasma as auxiliary gas for correcting matrix effects caused by the high carbon load due to biodiesel microemulsions. The oxygen gas flow rate was set in 37.5 mL min− 1. The accuracy of the developed procedure was evaluated by applying addition-recovery experiments for biodiesel samples from different sources. Recoveries varied from 76.5 to 116.2% for all analytes but Zn in castor beans biodiesel sample (65.0 to 76.2%). Recoveries lower than 86.6% were obtained for palm biodiesel sample, probably due to matrix effects. Detection limits calculated by using oxygen in the composition of the auxiliary gas added to the plasma were higher than those calculated without using it, probably due to the highest formation of oxides. Despite oxides formation, best analytical performance was reached by using oxygen as auxiliary gas and by proper correction of transport interferences. The developed procedure based on microemulsion formation was suitable for direct introduction of biodiesel samples in ICP-MS.  相似文献

A new method is presented for rapid and selective enrichment of radium in natural samples using 225Ra as a chemical yield tracer. The new technique allows a complete separation of the target nuclide from the sample matrix with high separation factors for thorium and uranium. The use of EmporeÔ Radium Rad Disks combines the easy handling of column chromatography with the high selectivity and rapid extraction kinetics of solvent extraction chromatography. Following this new chemical approach, eluates are obtained which are well suited for a-spectrometric analysis of Ra, Th and U.  相似文献

Approximately 100 freshwater samples (ground water, surface water, etc.) collected in the former USSR were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Standard water, NBS SRM 1643b, was used for quality control. By using the semi-quantitative analysis mode, analytical data and certified values (or informative values) were in agreement within ±30%. Concentrations of B, Ni, Se, Sr and Ba were found to be higher than global means. Concentration levels of Ag and Pb tended to be lower. For Be, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Cd, Tl, and Bi, the concentrations were almost equal to the global levels.  相似文献

A laser ablation setup including outer chamber, sample tube, sample holder and transport tubing was modelled and optimized using advanced computational fluid dynamics techniques. The different components of the setup were coupled and the whole device was modelled at once. The mass transport efficiency and transit times of near infrared femtosecond (fs) laser generated brass aerosols in pure argon and helium–argon mixtures were calculated at experimentally optimized conditions and a transient signal was constructed. The use of helium or argon did not influence the mass transport efficiency, but the signal structure changed. The signal fine structure was retrieved and experimentally validated. Bimodal peak structures were observed that seemed to originate from turbulent effects in the tubing connecting a Y-connector and the injector.  相似文献

Capillary electrophoresis dynamic reaction cell™ inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (CE-DRC-ICP-MS) for the determination of sulfur-containing amino acids is described. The sulfur-containing amino acids studied include l-cysteine, l-cystine, dl-homocystine and l-methionine. The species studied were well separated using a 70 cm length×75 μm i.d. fused silica capillary while the applied voltage was set at +22 kV and a 10 mmol l−1 disodium tetraborate buffer (pH 9.8) containing 0.1 mmol l−1 EDTA and 0.5 mmol l−1 Triton X-100 was used as the electrophoretic buffer. The sulfur-selective electropherogram was determined at m/z 48 as by using its reaction with O2 in the reaction cell. The method avoided the effect of polyatomic isobaric interferences at m/z 32 caused by and on by detecting as the oxide ion at m/z 48, which is less interfered. The detection limit of various species studied was in the range of 0.047-0.058 μg S ml−1, which corresponded to the absolute detection limit of 1.3-1.6 pg S based on the injection volume of 27 nl. We determined the concentrations of selected sulfur-containing amino acids in urine and nutritive complement samples. The recovery was in the range of 92-128% for various species.  相似文献
