The solvatochromic behavior of a penta‐tert‐butyl prydinium N‐phenolate betaine dye was studied using UV‐visible spectrophotometry in several binary mixture solvents. The solvent polarity parameter, ET (1) (kcal. mol?1) was calculated from the position of the longest‐wavelength intramolecular charge transfer absorption band of this penta‐tert‐butyl betaine dye. For binary solvent mixtures, all plots of ET (1) versus the mole fraction of a more polar component are nonlinear owing to preferential solvation of the probe by one component of the binary solvent mixture. In the computation of ET (1) it was assumed that the two solvents mixed interact to form a common structure with an ET (1) value not always intermediate between those of the two solvents mixed. The results obtained are explained by the strong synergism observed for some of the binary mixtures with strong hydrogen bond donors (HBD) solvents such as alcohols.  相似文献

We have investigated the effect of a series of 18 solvents and mixtures of solvents on the production of singlet molecular oxygen (O2(1Δg), denoted as 1O2) by 9H‐fluoren‐9‐one (FLU). The normalized empirical parameter E derived from ET(30) has been chosen as a measure of solvent polarity using Reichardt's betaine dyes. Quantum yields of 1O2 production (ΦΔ) decrease with increasing solvent polarity and protic character as a consequence of the decrease of the quantum yield of intersystem crossing (ΦISC). Values of ΦΔ of unity have been found in alkanes. In nonprotic solvents of increasing polarity, ΦISC and, therefore, ΦΔ decrease due to solvent‐induced changes in the energy levels of singlet and triplet excited states of FLU. This compound is a poor 1O2 sensitizer in protic solvents, because hydrogen bonding considerably increases the rate of internal conversion from the singlet excited state, thus diminishing ΦΔ to values much lower than those in nonprotic solvents of similar polarity. In mixtures of cyclohexane and alcohols, preferential solvation of FLU by the protic solvent leads to a fast decrease of ΦΔ upon addition of increasing amounts of the latter.  相似文献

Highly selective β-methylation of alcohols was achieved using an earth-abundant first row transition metal in the air stable molecular manganese complex [Mn(CO)2Br[HN(C2H4PiPr2)2]] 1 ([HN(C2H4PiPr2)2]=MACHO-iPr). The reaction requires only low loadings of 1 (0.5 mol %), methanolate as base and MeOH as methylation reagent as well as solvent. Various alcohols were β-methylated with very good selectivity (>99 %) and excellent yield (up to 94 %). Biomass derived aliphatic alcohols and diols were also selectively methylated on the β-position, opening a pathway to “biohybrid” molecules constructed entirely from non-fossil carbon. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction proceeds through a borrowing hydrogen pathway involving metal–ligand cooperation at the Mn-pincer complex. This transformation provides a convenient, economical, and environmentally benign pathway for the selective C−C bond formation with potential applications for the preparation of advanced biofuels, fine chemicals, and biologically active molecules  相似文献

The work is devoted to the investigation of thermodynamics of specific interaction of the tertiary aliphatic and aromatic amines with associated solvents as which aliphatic alcohols were taken. Solution enthalpies of aliphatic alcohols in amines (tri-n-propylamine, 2-methylpyridine, 3-methylpyridine, N-methylimidazole) as well as amines in alcohols were measured at infinite dilution. The enthalpies of specific interaction (H-bonding) in systems studied were determined based on experimental data. The enthalpies of specific interaction of amines in aliphatic alcohols significantly lower than the enthalpies of hydrogen bonding in complexes amine–alcohol of 1:1 composition determined in base media due to the reorganization of aliphatic alcohols as solvents. The determination of solvent reorganization contribution makes possible to define the hydrogen bonding enthalpies of amines with clusters of alcohols. Obtained enthalpies of hydrogen bonding in multi-particle complexes are sensitive to the influence of cooperative effect. It was shown, that hydrogen bond cooperativity factors in multi-particle complexes of alcohols with amines are approximately equal for all alcohols when pyridines and N-methylimidazole as solutes are used. At the same time, H-bonding cooperativity factors in complexes of trialkylamines with associative species of alcohols decrease with increasing of alkyl radical length in alcohol and amine molecules. This work shows that the thermodynamic functions of specific interaction of solutes with associated solvents cannot be described using the H-bond parameters for the complexes of 1:1 composition.  相似文献

Voltammetric experiments with 9,10‐anthraquinone and 1,4‐benzoquinone performed under controlled moisture conditions indicate that the hydrogen‐bond strengths of alcohols in aprotic organic solvents can be differentiated by the electrochemical parameter ΔEpred=|Epred(1)?Epred(2)|, which is the potential separation between the two one‐electron reduction processes. This electrochemical parameter is inversely related to the strength of the interactions and can be used to differentiate between primary, secondary, tertiary alcohols, and even diols, as it is sensitive to both their steric and electronic properties. The results are highly reproducible across two solvents with substantially different hydrogen‐bonding properties (CH3CN and CH2Cl2) and are supported by density functional theory calculations. This indicates that the numerous solvent–alcohol interactions are less significant than the quinone–alcohol hydrogen‐bonding interactions. The utility of ΔEpred was illustrated by comparisons between 1) 3,3,3‐trifluoro‐n‐propanol and 1,3‐difluoroisopropanol and 2) ethylene glycol and 2,2,2‐trifluoroethanol.  相似文献

L‐Cysteine hydrogen fluoride, or bis(L‐cysteinium) difluoride–L‐cysteine–hydrogen fluoride (1/1/1), 2C3H8NO2S+·2F·C3H7NO2S·HF or L‐Cys+(L‐Cys...L‐Cys+)F(F...H—F), provides the first example of a structure with cations of the `triglycine sulfate' type, i.e.A+(A...A+) (where A and A+ are the zwitterionic and cationic states of an amino acid, respectively), without a doubly charged counter‐ion. The salt crystallizes in the monoclinic system with the space group P21. The dimeric (L‐Cys...L‐Cys+) cation and the dimeric (F...H—F) anion are formed via strong O—H...O or F—H...F hydrogen bonds, respectively, with very short O...O [2.4438 (19) Å] and F...F distances [2.2676 (17) Å]. The F...F distance is significantly shorter than in solid hydrogen fluoride. Additionally, there is another very short hydrogen bond, of O—H...F type, formed by a L‐cysteinium cation and a fluoride ion. The corresponding O...F distance of 2.3412 (19) Å seems to be the shortest among O—H...F and F—H...O hydrogen bonds known to date. The single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction study was complemented by IR spectroscopy. Of special interest was the spectral region of vibrations related to the above‐mentioned hydrogen bonds.  相似文献

The oxidation of some aliphatic alcohols by triethylammonium chlorochromate (TriEACC) in dimethyl sulfoxide leads to the formation of the corresponding carbonyl compounds. The reaction is first order with respect to TriEACC. The reaction exhibited Michaelis–Menten type kinetics with respect to alcohol. The reaction is catalyzed by hydrogen ions. The hydrogen-ion dependence has the form: kobs = a + b[H+]. The oxidation of [1,1-2H2] ethanol (MeCD2OH) exhibits a substantial primary kinetic isotope effect. Oxidation of aliphatic alcohol was studied in 19 different organic solvents. The solvent effect has been analysed using Kamlet’s and Swain’s multi-parametric equation. A suitable mechanism has been proposed.  相似文献

Abstract –The 1Ag?1Bu+ electronic absorption band and the vibronically coupled, C=C stretching Raman lines in the 1Ag? and 21Ag? states were recorded for spheroidene free in nonpolar and polar solvents as well as for spheroidene bound to the LH1 and LH2 complexes of Rhodobacter sphaeroides 2.4.1. The 1Bu+ energy exhibited a linear dependence on R(n) = (n2 - 1)/(n2+ 2) in both nonpolar and polar solvents; the line for polar solvents had a gentler slope and crossed the line for nonpolar solvents at R(n) = 0.3. The above characteristic of polar solvents was ascribed to the electric field generated by fluctuation of the solvent permanent dipoles; it stabilizes the 1Bu+ energy and reduces the polarizability of the solvent. The vibronically coupled, C=C stretching frequencies in the 1Ag? and 21Ag? states [ν(Ag) and [ν(2Ag)] also showed similar dependence on R(n), which is explained in terms of vibronic coupling among the 1Ag?, 21Ag? and 31Ag? states. The environment of spheroidene in the LH2 and LH1 complexes was assessed on the basis of the 1Bu+ energy and the ν(Ag) and [ν(2Ag) frequencies: Spheroidene in the LH2 complex is located in an environment with high polarizability, while spheroidene in the LH1 complex is located in an environment with lower polarizability.  相似文献

The oxidation of some aliphatic alcohols by quinolinium fluorochromate (QFC) in dimethyl sulfoxide leads to the formation of corresponding carbonyl compounds. The reaction is first order with respect to QFC. The reaction exhibited Michaelis‐Menten type kinetics with respect to the alcohol. The reaction is catalyzed by hydrogen ions. The hydrogen‐ion dependence has the form: kobs=a + b[H+]. The oxidation of [1,1‐2H2]ethanol (MeCD2OH) exhibits a substantial primary kinetic isotope effect. The reaction has been studied in nineteen different organic solvents. The solvent effect was analyzed using Taft's and Swain's multiparametric equations. The rate of disproportionation of the complex is susceptible to both polar and steric effects of the substituents. A suitable mechanism has been proposed. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The properties of the intramolecular hydrogen bonds of doubly 15N‐labeled protonated sponges of the 1,8‐bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene (DMANH+) type have been studied as a function of the solvent, counteranion, and temperature using low‐temperature NMR spectroscopy. Information about the hydrogen‐bond symmetries was obtained by the analysis of the chemical shifts δH and δN and the scalar coupling constants J(N,N), J(N,H), J(H,N) of the 15NH15N hydrogen bonds. Whereas the individual couplings J(N,H) and J(H,N) were averaged by a fast intramolecular proton tautomerism between two forms, it is shown that the sum |J(N,H)+J(H,N)| generally represents a measure of the hydrogen‐bond strength in a similar way to δH and J(N,N). The NMR spectroscopic parameters of DMANH+ and of 4‐nitro‐DMANH+ are independent of the anion in the case of CD3CN, which indicates ion‐pair dissociation in this solvent. By contrast, studies using CD2Cl2, [D8]toluene as well as the freon mixture CDF3/CDF2Cl, which is liquid down to 100 K, revealed an influence of temperature and of the counteranions. Whereas a small counteranion such as trifluoroacetate perturbed the hydrogen bond, the large noncoordinating anion tetrakis[3,5‐bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate B[{C6H3(CF3)2}4]? (BARF?), which exhibits a delocalized charge, made the hydrogen bond more symmetric. Lowering the temperature led to a similar symmetrization, an effect that is discussed in terms of solvent ordering at low temperature and differential solvent order/disorder at high temperatures. By contrast, toluene molecules that are ordered around the cation led to typical high‐field shifts of the hydrogen‐bonded proton as well as of those bound to carbon, an effect that is absent in the case of neutral NHN chelates.  相似文献

Kamlet-Taft’s α (hydrogen bond donor acidity) and π* (dipolarity/polarizability) values of various silica batches measured in various solvents are presented. The α and π* parameters for the various solid acids are analyzed by means of Fe(phen)2(CN)2 (cis-dicyano-bis-(1,10)-phenanthroline-iron(II), 1), Michler’s ketone (4,4′-bis-(dimethylamino)-benzophenone, 2), and two hydrophilic derivatives of 2, (4-(dimethylamino)-4′-(di-2-hydroxyethyl)-amino-benzophenone (3a) and 4,4′-bis-(di-(2-hydroxyethyl)-amino)-benzophenone (3b) as well as coumarin 153 (4) as solvatochromic surface polarity indicators. Apparent β (hydrogen bond acceptor basicity) parameters for bare silica have been evaluated by means of an aminobenzodifuranone dye (5) as solvatochromic probe. The chemical interpretation of the α and π* parameters and the nature of the solvent/surface interaction which they reflect are discussed. It can be shown that an increase of the HBA (hydrogen bond accepting) capacity of the solvent significantly decreases the HBD (hydrogen bond donating) capacity of the surface environment, whereas the dipolarity/polarizability value of the silica/solvent interface is a composite of many effects. The classification of the polarity of silica particles in organic solvents compared to pure liquids is outlined.  相似文献

Glycinium semi‐oxalate‐II, C2H6NO2+·C2HO4, (A), and diglycinium oxalate methanol disolvate, 2C2H6NO2+·C2O42−·2CH3OH, (B), are new examples in the glycine–oxalic acid family. (A) is a new polymorph of the known glycinium semi‐oxalate salt, (C). Compounds (A) and (C) have a similar packing of the semi‐oxalate monoanions with respect to the glycinium cations, but in (A) the two glycinium cations and the two semi‐oxalate anions in the asymmetric unit are non‐equivalent, and the binding of the glycinium cations to each other is radically different. Based on this difference, one can expect that, although the two forms grow concomitantly from the same batch, a transformation between (A) and (C) in the solid state should be difficult. In (B), two glycinium cations and an oxalate anion, which sits across a centre of inversion, are linked via strong short O—H...O hydrogen bonds to form the main structural fragment, similar to that in diglycinium oxalate, (D). Methanol solvent molecules are embedded between the glycinium cations of neighbouring fragments. These fragments form a three‐dimensional network via N—H...O hydrogen bonds. Salts (B) and (D) can be obtained from the same solution by, respectively, slow or rapid antisolvent crystallization.  相似文献

The analysis of the activation parameters for the formal H‐atom transfer reaction between 2,2,5,7,8‐pentamethyl‐6‐chromanol (ChrOH) and 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl (dpph?) reveals that these parameters are effective probes of the actual reaction mechanism. Indeed, the A factors measured in various polar and apolar solvents are localized in three distinct domains according to whether the reaction occurs via outer‐sphere electron transfer (ET) from the anion ChrO? or hydrogen atom transfer (HAT). For instance, A = 5.9 × 105 M?1 s?1 and Ea = 2.5 kcal mol?1 in cyclohexane where the reaction proceeds by HAT, whereas in methanol, ethanol, and their mixtures with water where there is a substantial ET contribution A > 109 M?1s?1 and Ea > 7 kcal mol?1. Interestingly, in nonhydroxylic polar solvents, A~ 107 M?1s?1 and the Ea values reflect the H‐bond accepting ability of the solvent in agreement with the “standard” kinetic solvent effects on HAT reactions. Addition of small quantities of pyridine accelerates the reaction rates in these solvents. This suggests that the H‐bonded complex (ChrOH···Py) is able to react via intermolecular ET with dpph?. It is known, in fact, that pyridine lowers the oxidation potential of phenols by ~0.5 V and the ΔGET of ChrOH + dpph? consequently decreases by about 10 kcal mol?1. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymerization of vinyl biphenyl derivatives containing a pendant oligo(oxyethylene)cyclotriphosphazene (VBMEP, ? (OCH2CH2)nOCH3, n = 1; VBDEP, n = 2; VBTEP, n = 3) was carried out in various solvents. The conversions of these monomers increased with increasing β values, solvent hydrogen bond acceptor abilities, indicating that the hydrogen bond formation is the most important factor in the polymerization. 13CNMR study showed that the reactivity of the monomer is influenced by the hydrogen bond interaction. In ethanol, the kinetic orders of monomer and initiator concentrations for the polymerization of VBDEP were different from those in 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE), which suggest the predominant occurrence of primary radical termination. The intrinsic viscosity of poly(VBDEP) with M?n = 22 000 in DCE was two times higher than that in ethanol, and plots of intrinsic viscosity versus conversion of VBDEP gave a straight line. The results suggest that the polymer chains in ethanol are in a coiled conformation, whereas in DCE they are in a relatively extended structure, and that the propagation is affected by the conformational change. These behaviors originated from the hydrogen bond formation between polymers and solvents are discussed. The copolymerization of styrene with multiarmed monomers and the properties of polycascade polymers obtained are also described. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The rate constant for the Menschutkin reaction of 1,2‐dimethylimidazole with benzyl bromide to produce 3‐benzyl‐1,2‐dimethylimidazolium bromide was determined in a number of ionic liquids and molecular organic solvents. The rate constants in 12 ionic liquids are in the range of (1.0–3.2) × 10?3 L mol?1 s?1 and vary with the solvent anion in the order (CF3SO2)2 N? < PF6? < BF4?. Variations with the solvent cation (butylmethylimidazolium, octylmethylimidazolium, butyldimethylimidazolium, octyldimethylimidazolium, butylmethylpyrrolidinium, and hexyltributylammonium) are minimal. The rate constants in the ionic liquids are comparable to those in polar aprotic molecular solvents (acetonitrile, propylene carbonate) but much higher than those in weakly polar organic solvents and in alcohols. Correlation of the rate constants with the solvatochromic parameter E T(30) is reasonable within each group of similar solvents but very poor when all the solvents are correlated together. Better correlation is obtained for the organic solvents by using a combination of two parameters, π* (dipolarity/polarizibility) and α (hydrogen bond acidity), while additional parameters such as δ (cohesive energy density) do not provide any further improvement. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. *

A combined femtosecond transient absorption (fs‐TA) and nanosecond time‐resolved resonance Raman (ns‐TR3) spectroscopic investigation of the photoreaction of 2‐benzoylpyridine (2‐BPy) in acetonitrile and neutral, basic and acidic aqueous solvents is reported. fs‐TA results showed that the nπ* triplet 2‐BPy is the precursor of the photocyclisation reaction in neutral and basic aqueous solvents. The cis triplet biradical and the cis singlet zwitterionic species produced during the photocyclisation reaction were initially characterised by ns‐TR3 spectroscopy. In addition, a new species was uniquely observed in basic aqueous solvent after the decay of the cis singlet zwitterionic species and this new species was tentatively assigned to the photocyclised radical anion. The ground‐state conformation of 2‐BPy in acidic aqueous solvent is the pyridine nitrogen‐protonated 2‐BPy cation (2‐BPy‐NH+) rather than the neutral form of 2‐BPy. After laser photolysis, the singlet excited state (S1) of 2‐BPy‐NH+ is generated and evolves through excited‐state proton transfer (ESPT) and efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) processes to the triplet exited state (T1) of the carbonyl oxygen‐protonated 2‐BPy cation (2‐BPy‐OH+) and then photocyclises with the lone pair of the nitrogen atom in the heterocyclic ring. Cyclisation reactions take place both in neutral/basic and acidic aqueous solvents, but the photocyclisation mechanisms in these different aqueous solvents are very different. This is likely due to the different conformation of the precursor and the influence of hydrogen‐bonding of the solvent on the reactions.  相似文献

The solvent effects on the electronic absorption spectra of 9,10-anthraquinone (AQ) and its symmetric dihydroxy derivatives namely 1,5-dihydroxyanthraquinone (1,5-DHAQ) and 2,6-dihydroxyanthraquinone (2,6-DHAQ) have been studied in pure solvents and some binary solvent mixtures. The frequencies of the absorption for AQ and 2,6-DHAQ are quite solvent sensitive while those for 1,5-DHAQ are not. Due to the intramolecular hydrogen bond between the CO and OH groups, no influence of solvent hydrogen bond acceptors is observed in 1,5-DHAQ. This hydrogen bond gives a stable six member cycle which is not broken even by the strongest hydrogen bond acceptor solvents used in this work, such as DMSO and DMF. The Taft and Kamlet's solvatochromic comparison method was applied for AQ and 2,6-DHAQ. Aromatic solvents and aliphatic amines were not included in the correlations since they strongly deviate suggesting another type of interactions. All the π→π* bands of AQ and 2,6-DHAQ show strong influence of π* despite the fact that their dipole moment is zero. Although it would be reasonable to expect that in the absence of a solute dipole moment there is not significant orientation of solvent molecules around the solute molecules, in this case dipolar interactions between solute and solvent due to local effects might be expected. AQ may be considered as formed by two carbonyl groups weakly interacting with the benzene rings; that means that the carbonyl group can behave as an isolated dipole and independently of the other. To detect possible specific interactions between the AQ and aliphatic amines and aromatic hydrocarbons, preferential solvation in mixed solvent was investigated. It is concluded that EDA interactions are important in the solvation of AQ with these compounds as solvents.  相似文献
