Lithium metal is an ideal anode for next‐generation lithium batteries owing to its very high theoretical specific capacity of 3860 mAh g?1 but very reactive upon exposure to ambient air, rendering it difficult to handle and transport. Air‐stable lithium spheres (ASLSs) were produced by electrochemical plating under CO2 atmosphere inside an advanced aberration‐corrected environmental transmission electron microscope. The ASLSs exhibit a core–shell structure with a Li core and a Li2CO3 shell. In ambient air, the ASLSs do not react with moisture and maintain their core–shell structures. Furthermore, the ASLSs can be used as anodes in lithium‐ion batteries, and they exhibit similar electrochemical behavior to metallic Li, indicating that the surface Li2CO3 layer is a good Li+ ion conductor. The air stability of the ASLSs is attributed to the surface Li2CO3 layer, which is barely soluble in water and does not react with oxygen and nitrogen in air at room temperature, thus passivating the Li core.  相似文献

Nanorods of MnO2, Mn3O4, Mn2O3 and MnO are synthesized by hydrothermal reactions and subsequent annealing. It is shown that though different oxides experience distinct phase transition processes in the initial discharge, metallic Mn and Li2O are the end products of discharge, while MnO is the end product of recharge for all these oxides between 0.0 and 3.0 V vs. Li+/Li. Of these 4 manganese oxides, MnO is believed the most promising anode material for lithium ion batteries while MnO2 is the most promising cathode material for secondary lithium batteries.  相似文献

Solid alkali metal carbonates are universal passivation layer components of intercalation battery materials and common side products in metal‐O2 batteries, and are believed to form and decompose reversibly in metal‐O2/CO2 cells. In these cathodes, Li2CO3 decomposes to CO2 when exposed to potentials above 3.8 V vs. Li/Li+. However, O2 evolution, as would be expected according to the decomposition reaction 2 Li2CO3→4 Li++4 e?+2 CO2+O2, is not detected. O atoms are thus unaccounted for, which was previously ascribed to unidentified parasitic reactions. Here, we show that highly reactive singlet oxygen (1O2) forms upon oxidizing Li2CO3 in an aprotic electrolyte and therefore does not evolve as O2. These results have substantial implications for the long‐term cyclability of batteries: they underpin the importance of avoiding 1O2 in metal‐O2 batteries, question the possibility of a reversible metal‐O2/CO2 battery based on a carbonate discharge product, and help explain the interfacial reactivity of transition‐metal cathodes with residual Li2CO3.  相似文献

Lithium (Li) dendrite growth is a long-standing challenge leading to short cycle life and safety issues in Li metal batteries. Li dendrite growth is kinetically controlled by ion transport, the concentration gradient, and the local electric field. In this study, an internal electric field is generated between the anode and Au-modified separator to eliminate the concentration gradient of Li+. The Li–Au alloy is formed during the first cycle of Li plating/stripping, which causes Li+ deposition on the Au-modified side and lithium anode electrode, reversing the lithium dendrite growth direction. The electrically coupled Li metal electrode and Au-modified film create a uniform electric potential and Li+ concentration distribution, resulting in reduced concentration polarization and stable Li deposition. As a result, the Au-modified separator improves the lifespan of Li‖Li batteries; the Li‖LiFePO4 cells show excellent capacity retention (>97.8% after 350 cycles), and Li‖LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cells deliver 75.1% capacity retention for more than 300 cycles at 1C rate. This strategy offers an efficient approach for commercial application in advanced metallic Li batteries.

An internal electric field is built between the anode and the Au-modified separator to eliminate the concentration gradient of Li+ and reverse the dendrite growth direction.  相似文献

Although a lithium metal anode has a high energy density compared with a carbon insertion anode, the poor rechargeability prevents the practical use of anode materials. A lithium electrode coated with Li2CO3 was prepared as a negative electrode to enhance cycleability through the control of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer formation in Li secondary batteries. The electrochemical characteristics of the SEI layer were examined using chronopotentiometry (CP) and impedance spectroscopy. The Li2CO3-SEI layer prevents electrolyte decomposition reaction and has low interface resistance. In addition, the lithium ion diffusion in the SEI layer of the uncoated and the Li2CO3-coated electrode was evaluated using chronoamperometry (CA).  相似文献

Thin films of pure SnO2, of the Sn/Li2O layered structure, and of Sn/Li2O were fabricated by sputtering method, while a `lithium-reacted tin oxide thin film' was assembled by the evaporation of lithium metal onto a SnO2 thin film. Film structure and charge/discharge characteristics were compared. The lithium-reacted tin oxide thin film, the Sn/Li2O layered structure, and the Sn/Li2O co-sputtered thin films did not show any irreversible side reactions of forming Li2O and metallic Sn near 0.8 V vs Li/Li+. The initial charge retention of the Sn/Li2O layered structure and Sn/Li2O co-sputtered thin films was about 50% and a similar value was found for the lithium-reacted tin oxide thin film (more than 60%). Sn/Li2O layered structure and Sn/Li2O co-sputtered thin films showed better cycling behavior over 500 cycles than the pure SnO2 and lithium-reacted tin oxide thin film in the cut-off range from 1.2 to 0 V vs Li/Li+.  相似文献

The most-popular strategy to improve the cycling stability and rate performance of the sulfur electrode in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries is to astrict the sulfur in a conducting medium by using complicated chemical/physical processing. Lithium sulfide (Li2S) has been proposed as an alternative electrode material to sulfur. However, for its application, it must meet challenges such as high instability in air together with all of the drawbacks of a sulfur–containing electrode. Herein, we report the feasibility of using Li2S, which was obtained by electrochemical conversion of commercial molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) into Li2S and metallic molybdenium (Mo) at low voltages, as a high-performance active material in Li–S batteries. Metallic Mo prevented the dissolution of lithium polysulfides into the electrolyte and enhanced the conductivity of the sulfide electrode. Therefore, the in situ electrochemically prepared Li2S/Mo composite exhibited both high cycling stability and high sulfur utilization.  相似文献

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) comprising Li metal anode and high-voltage nickel-rich cathode could potentially realize high capacity and power density. However, suitable electrolytes to tolerate the oxidation on the cathode at high cut-off voltage are urgently needed. Herein, we present an armor-like inorganic-rich cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) strategy for exploring oxidation-resistant electrolytes for sustaining 4.8 V Li||LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM622) batteries with pentafluorophenylboronic acid (PFPBA) as the additive. In such CEI, the armored lithium borate surrounded by CEI up-layer represses the dissolution of inner CEI moieties and also improves the Li+ conductivity of CEI while abundant LiF is distributed over whole CEI to enhance the mechanical stability and Li+ conductivity compared with polymer moieties. With such robust Li+ conductive CEI, the Li||NCM622 battery delivered excellent stability at 4.6 V cut-off voltage with 91.2 % capacity retention after 400 cycles. The excellent cycling performance was also obtained even at 4.8 V cut-off voltage.  相似文献

The lithium (Li)–air battery has an ultrahigh theoretical specific energy, however, even in pure oxygen (O2), the vulnerability of conventional organic electrolytes and carbon cathodes towards reaction intermediates, especially O2?, and corrosive oxidation and crack/pulverization of Li metal anode lead to poor cycling stability of the Li‐air battery. Even worse, the water and/or CO2 in air bring parasitic reactions and safety issues. Therefore, applying such systems in open‐air environment is challenging. Herein, contrary to previous assertions, we have found that CO2 can improve the stability of both anode and electrolyte, and a high‐performance rechargeable Li–O2/CO2 battery is developed. The CO2 not only facilitates the in situ formation of a passivated protective Li2CO3 film on the Li anode, but also restrains side reactions involving electrolyte and cathode by capturing O2?. Moreover, the Pd/CNT catalyst in the cathode can extend the battery lifespan by effectively tuning the product morphology and catalyzing the decomposition of Li2CO3. The Li–O2/CO2 battery achieves a full discharge capacity of 6628 mAh g?1 and a long life of 715 cycles, which is even better than those of pure Li–O2 batteries.  相似文献

The rampant generation of lithium hydroxide and carbonate impurities, commonly known as residual lithium, is a practical obstacle to the mass-scale synthesis and handling of high-nickel (>90 %) layered oxides and their use as high-energy-density cathodes for lithium-ion batteries. Herein, we suggest a simple in situ method to control the residual lithium chemistry of a high-nickel lithium layered oxide, Li(Ni0.91Co0.06Mn0.03)O2 (NCM9163), with minimal side effects. Based on thermodynamic considerations of the preferred reactions, we systematically designed a synthesis process that preemptively converts residual Li2O (the origin of LiOH and Li2CO3) into a more stable compound by injecting reactive SO2 gas. The preformed lithium sulfate thin film significantly suppresses the generation of LiOH and Li2CO3 during both synthesis and storage, thereby mitigating slurry gelation and gas evolution and improving the cycle stability.  相似文献

Re-certification of the absolute isotopic composition of the natural lithium isotopic reference material (IRM), IRMM-016, requires measurements calibrated by means of synthetic mixtures of highly enriched lithium isotopes. Ten such mixtures were prepared by weighing and mixing of two well characterised, isotopically enriched, Li2CO3 compounds. The starting materials, 99.9981% enriched 6Li, and 99.9937% enriched 7Li, were purified by ion exchange, and the purified materials converted from LiOH to Li2CO3 by reaction with CO2. Ten new mixtures were prepared by mixing different weighed amounts of these dissolved Li2CO3 carrier compounds. The compounds had an estimated level of impurities of 100 ± 100 μg · g–1 (expanded uncertainty with a coverage factor of 2). In the ten mixtures, the n(6Li)/n(7Li) ratio varies from 0.025 to 14 and the achieved expanded relative uncertainty on the amount ratio prepared is typically 2 · 10–4. These mixtures were then used to determine the correction factor, K, for mass discrimination of the measurement procedure and instrument concerned.  相似文献

The use of a lithium metal anode still presents a challenging chemistry and engineering problem that holds back next generation lithium battery technology. One of the issues facing lithium metal is the presence of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer that forms on the electrode creating a variety of chemical species that change the properties of the electrode and is closely related to the formation and growth of lithium dendrites. In order to advance the scientific progress of lithium metal more must be understood about the fundamentals of the SEI. One property of the SEI that is particularly critical is the passivating behavior of the different SEI components. This property is critical to the continued formation of SEI and stability of the electrolyte and electrode. Here we report the investigation of the passivation behavior of Li2O, Li2CO3, LiF and LiOH with the lithium salt LiFSI. We used large computational chemistry models that are able to capture the lithium/SEI interface as well as the SEI/electrolyte interface. We determined that LiF and Li2CO3 are the most passivating of the SEI layers, followed by LiOH and Li2O. These results match previous studies of other Li salts and provide further examination of LiFSI reduction.  相似文献

Polymer based quasi-solid-state electrolyte (QSE) has attracted great attention due to its assurance for high safety of rechargeable batteries including lithium metal batteries (LMB). However, it faces the issue of low ionic conductivity of electrolyte and solid-electrolyte-interface (SEI) layer between QSE and lithium anode. Herein, we firstly demonstrate that the ordered and fast transport of lithium ion (Li+) can be realized in QSE. Due to the higher coordination strength of Li+ on tertiary amine (−NR3) group of polymer network than that on carbonyl (−C=O) group of ester solvent, Li+ can diffuse orderly and quickly on −NR3 of polymer, significantly increasing the ionic conductivity of QSE to 3.69 mS cm−1. Moreover, −NR3 of polymer can induce in situ and uniform generation of Li3N and LiNxOy in SEI. As a result, the Li||NCM811 batteries (50 μm Li foil) with this QSE show an excellent stability of 220 cycles at ≈1.5 mA cm−2, 5 times to those with conventional QSE. LMBs with LiFePO4 can stably run for ≈8300 h. This work demonstrates an attractive concept for improving ionic conductivity of QSE, and also provides an important step for developing advanced LMB with high cycle stability and safety.  相似文献

The ever‐increasing consumption of a huge quantity of lithium batteries, for example, Li–MnO2 cells, raises critical concern about their recycling. We demonstrate herein that decayed Li–MnO2 cells can be further utilized as rechargeable lithium–air cells with admitted oxygen. We further investigated the effects of lithiated manganese dioxide on the electrocatalytic properties of oxygen‐reduction and oxygen‐evolution reactions (ORR/OER). The catalytic activity was found to be correlated with the composition of LixMnO2 electrodes (0<x<1) generated in situ in aprotic Li–MnO2 cells owing to tuning of the Mn valence and electronic structure. In particular, modestly lithiated Li0.50MnO2 exhibited superior performance with enhanced round‐trip efficiency (ca. 76 %), high cycling ability (190 cycles), and high discharge capacity (10 823 mA h gcarbon?1). The results indicate that the use of depleted Li–MnO2 batteries can be prolonged by their application as rechargeable lithium–air batteries.  相似文献

Constructing efficient artificial solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film is extremely vital for the practical application of lithium metal batteries. Herein, a dense artificial SEI film, in which lithiophilic Zn/LixZny are uniformly but nonconsecutively dispersed in the consecutive Li+-conductors of LixSiOy, Li2O and LiOH, is constructed via the in situ reaction of layered zinc silicate nanosheets and Li. The consecutive Li+-conductors can promote the desolvation process of solvated-Li+ and regulate the transfer of lithium ions. The nonconsecutive lithiophilic metals are polarized by the internal electric field to boost the transfer of lithium ions, and lower the nucleation barrier. Therefore, a low polarization of ≈50 mV for 750 h at 2.0 mA cm−2 in symmetric cells, and a high capacity retention of 99.2 % in full cells with a high lithium iron phosphate areal loading of ≈13 mg cm−2 are achieved. This work offers new sights to develop advanced alkali metal anodes for efficient energy storage.  相似文献

The deployment of lithium metal anode in solid-state batteries with polymer electrolytes has been recognized as a promising approach to achieving high-energy-density technologies. However, the practical application of the polymer electrolytes is currently constrained by various challenges, including low ionic conductivity, inadequate electrochemical window, and poor interface stability. To address these issues, a novel eutectic-based polymer electrolyte consisting of succinonitrile (SN) and poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGMEA) is developed. The research results demonstrate that the interactions between SN and PEGMEA promote the dissociation of the lithium difluoro(oxalato) borate (LiDFOB) salt and increase the concentration of free Li+. The well-designed eutectic-based PAN1.2-SPE (PEGMEA: SN=1: 1.2 mass ratio) exhibits high ionic conductivity of 1.30 mS cm−1 at 30 °C and superior interface stability with Li anode. The Li/Li symmetric cell based on PAN1.2-SPE enables long-term plating/stripping at 0.3 and 0.5 mA cm−2, and the Li/LiFePO4 cell achieves superior long-term cycling stability (capacity retention of 80.3 % after 1500 cycles). Moreover, Li/LiFePO4 and Li/LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 pouch cells employing PAN1.2-SPE demonstrate excellent cycling and safety characteristics. This study presents a new pathway for designing high-performance polymer electrolytes and promotes the practical application of high-stable lithium metal batteries.  相似文献

The photoelectrochemical performance of lithium in a propylene carbonate solution of LiClO4 and in a mixture of propylene carbonate with dimethoxyethane, as well as in a LiAlCl4 solution in thionyl chloride, has been investigated. It has been established that when illuminating the electrodes under study, electronic photoemission takes place from the metal into a passivating film permanently existing on the lithium surface. The measurements were in part carried out with the Li electrode coated specially with a Li2O or Li2CO3 protecting film. Photoemission spectroscopy has been used as a tool for exploring the processes of both formation and change in the composition and properties of the passivating layers on the lithium electrodes. The results for the photoelectrochemistry of lithium have been compared with the analogous data obtained with electrodes made of gold and SnCd alloy in a propylene carbonate solution of LiClO4. In the two last cases, electronic photoemission from the metal into solution has been revealed. Received: 22 February 1999 / Accepted: 27 January 2000  相似文献

Sulfide electrolytes with high ionic conductivity hold great promise for all-solid-state lithium batteries. However, the parasitic redox reactions between sulfide electrolyte and Li metal result in interfacial instability and rapid decline of the battery performance. Herein, a redox-resistible Li6PS5Cl (LPSC) electrolyte is created by regulating the electron distribution in LPSC with Mg and F incorporation. The introduction of Mg triggers the electron agglomeration around S atom, inhibiting the electron acceptance from Li, and F generates the self-limiting interface, which hinders the redox reactions between LPSC and Li metal. This redox-resistible Li6PS5Cl-MgF2 electrolyte therefore presents a high critical current density (2.3 times that of pristine electrolyte). The LiCoO2/Li6PS5Cl-MgF2/Li cell shows an outstanding cycling stability (93.3 %@100 cycles at 0.2 C). This study highlights the electronic structure modulation to address redox issues on sulfide-based lithium batteries.  相似文献
