This paper presents some improvements to the matrix-sign-function algorithm for the algebraic Riccati equation. A simple reorganization changes nonsymmetric matrix inversions into symmetric matrix inversions. Scaling accelerates convergence of the basic iteration and yields a new quadratic formula for certain 2-by-2 algebraic Riccati equations. Numerical experience suggests the algorithm be supplemented with a refinement strategy similar to iterative refinement for systems of linear equations. Refinement also produces an error estimate. The resulting procedure is numerically stable. It compares favorably with current Schur vector-based algorithms.  相似文献

We consider an algebraic multilevel preconditioning technique for SPD matrices arising from finite element discretization of elliptic PDEs. In particular, we address the case of non‐M matrices. The method is based on element agglomeration and assumes access to the individual element matrices. The left upper block of the considered multiplicative two‐level preconditioner is approximated using incomplete factorization techniques. The coarse‐grid element matrices are simply Schur complements computed from local neighbourhood matrices, i.e. small collections of element matrices. Assembling these local Schur complements results in a global Schur complement approximation that can be analysed by regarding (local) macro elements. These components, when combined in the framework of an algebraic multilevel iteration, yield a robust and efficient linear solver. The presented numerical experiments include also the Lamé differential equation for the displacements in the two‐dimensional plane‐stress elasticity problem. Summary. We consider a two-grid method for solving 2D convection-diffusion problems. The coarse grid correction is based on approximation of the Schur complement. As a preconditioner of the Schur complement we use the exact Schur complement of modified fine grid equations. We assume constant coefficients and periodic boundary conditions and apply Fourier analysis. We prove an upper bound for the spectral radius of the two-grid iteration matrix that is smaller than one and independent of the mesh size, the convection/diffusion ratio and the flow direction; i.e. we have a (strong) robustness result. This paper is concerned with the efficient solution of the linear systems of equations that arise from an adaptive space-implicit time discretisation of the Black-Scholes equation. These nonsymmetric systems are very large and sparse, so an iterative method will usually be the method of choice. However, such a method may require a large number of iterations to converge, particularly when the timestep used is large (which is often the case towards the end of a simulation which uses adaptive timestepping). An appropriate preconditioner is therefore desirable. In this paper we show that a very simple multigrid algorithm with standard components works well as a preconditioner for these problems. We analyse the eigenvalue spectrum of the multigrid iteration matrix for uniform grid problems and illustrate the method’s efficiency in practice by considering the results of numerical experiments on both uniform grids and those which use adaptivity in space.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce and analyse a new Schur complement approximation based on incomplete Gaussian elimination. The approximate Schur complement is used to develop a multigrid method. This multigrid method has an algorithmic structure that is very similar to the algorithmic structure of classical multigrid methods. The resulting method is almost purely algebraic and has interesting properties with respect to variation in problem parameters.  相似文献

Two‐grid methods constitute the building blocks of multigrid methods, which are among the most efficient solution techniques for solving large sparse systems of linear equations. In this paper, an analysis is developed that does not require any symmetry property. Several equivalent expressions are provided that characterize all eigenvalues of the iteration matrix. In the symmetric positive‐definite (SPD) case, these expressions reproduce the sharp two‐grid convergence estimate obtained by Falgout, Vassilevski and Zikatanov (Numer. Linear Algebra Appl. 2005; 12 :471–494), and also previous algebraic bounds, which can be seen as corollaries of this estimate. These results allow to measure the convergence by checking ‘approximation properties’. In this work, proper extensions of the latter to the nonsymmetric case are presented. Sometimes approximation properties for the SPD case are summarized in loose terms; e.g.: Interpolation must be able to approximate an eigenvector with error bound proportional to the size of the eigenvalue (SIAM J. Sci. Comp. 2000; 22 :1570–1592). It is shown that this can be applied to nonsymmetric problems too, understanding ‘size’ as ‘modulus’. Eventually, an analysis is developed, for the nonsymmetric case, of the theoretical foundations of ‘compatible relaxation’, according to which a Fine/Coarse partitioning may be checked and possibly improved. This paper deals with a fast method for solving large‐scale algebraic saddle‐point systems arising from fictitious domain formulations of elliptic boundary value problems. A new variant of the fictitious domain approach is analyzed. Boundary conditions are enforced by control variables introduced on an auxiliary boundary located outside the original domain. This approach has a significantly higher convergence rate; however, the algebraic systems resulting from finite element discretizations are typically non‐symmetric. The presented method is based on the Schur complement reduction. If the stiffness matrix is singular, the reduced system can be formulated again as another saddle‐point problem. Its modification by orthogonal projectors leads to an equation that can be efficiently solved using a projected Krylov subspace method for non‐symmetric operators. For this purpose, the projected variant of the BiCGSTAB algorithm is derived from the non‐projected one. The behavior of the method is illustrated by examples, in which the BiCGSTAB iterations are accelerated by a multigrid strategy. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Iterative methods of Krylov‐subspace type can be very effective solvers for matrix systems resulting from partial differential equations if appropriate preconditioning is employed. We describe and test block preconditioners based on a Schur complement approximation which uses a multigrid method for finite element approximations of the linearized incompressible Navier‐Stokes equations in streamfunction and vorticity formulation. By using a Picard iteration, we use this technology to solve fully nonlinear Navier‐Stokes problems. The solvers which result scale very well with problem parameters. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper presents an algebraic multigrid method for the efficient solution of the linear system arising from a finite element discretization of variational problems in H0(curl,Ω). The finite element spaces are generated by Nédélec's edge elements. A coarsening technique is presented, which allows the construction of suitable coarse finite element spaces, corresponding transfer operators and appropriate smoothers. The prolongation operator is designed such that coarse grid kernel functions of the curl‐operator are mapped to fine grid kernel functions. Furthermore, coarse grid kernel functions are ‘discrete’ gradients. The smoothers proposed by Hiptmair and Arnold, Falk and Winther are directly used in the algebraic framework. A poroelastic saturated medium can be modeled by means of Biot's theory of consolidation. It describes the time‐dependent interaction between the deformation of porous material and the fluid flow inside of it. Here, for the efficient solution of the poroelastic equations, a multigrid method is employed with an Uzawa‐type iteration as the smoother. The Uzawa smoother is an equation‐wise procedure. It shall be interpreted as a combination of the symmetric Gauss‐Seidel smoothing for displacements, together with a Richardson iteration for the Schur complement in the pressure field. The Richardson iteration involves a relaxation parameter which affects the convergence speed, and has to be carefully determined. The analysis of the smoother is based on the framework of local Fourier analysis (LFA) and it allows us to provide an analytic bound of the smoothing factor of the Uzawa smoother as well as an optimal value of the relaxation parameter. Numerical experiments show that our upper bound provides a satisfactory estimate of the exact smoothing factor, and the selected relaxation parameter is optimal. In order to improve the convergence performance, the acceleration of multigrid by iterant recombination is taken into account. Numerical results confirm the efficiency and robustness of the acceleration scheme.  相似文献

This paper theoretically examines a multigrid strategy for solving systems of elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) introduced in the work of Lee. Unlike most multigrid solvers that are constructed directly from the whole system operator, this strategy builds the solver using a factorization of the system operator. This factorization is composed of an algebraic coupling term and a diagonal (decoupled) differential operator. Exploiting the factorization, this approach can produce decoupled systems on the coarse levels. The corresponding coarse‐grid operators are in fact the Galerkin variational coarsening of the diagonal differential operator. Thus, rather than performing delicate coarse‐grid selection and interpolation weight procedures on the original strongly coupled system as often done, these procedures are isolated to the diagonal differential operator. To establish the theoretical results, however, we assume that these systems of PDEs are elliptic in the Agmon–Douglis–Nirenberg (ADN) sense and apply the factorization and multigrid only to the principal part of the system of PDEs. Two‐grid error bounds are established for the iteration applied to the complete system of PDEs. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of this strategy and to expose factors that affect the convergence of the methods derived from this strategy.  相似文献

This paper introduces a robust preconditioner for general sparse matrices based on low‐rank approximations of the Schur complement in a Domain Decomposition framework. In this ‘Schur Low Rank’ preconditioning approach, the coefficient matrix is first decoupled by a graph partitioner, and then a low‐rank correction is exploited to compute an approximate inverse of the Schur complement associated with the interface unknowns. The method avoids explicit formation of the Schur complement. We show the feasibility of this strategy for a model problem and conduct a detailed spectral analysis for the relation between the low‐rank correction and the quality of the preconditioner. We first introduce the SLR preconditioner for symmetric positive definite matrices and symmetric indefinite matrices if the interface matrices are symmetric positive definite. Extensions to general symmetric indefinite matrices as well as to nonsymmetric matrices are also discussed. This paper discusses a class of multilevel preconditioners based on approximate block factorization for conforming finite element methods employing quadratic trial and test functions. The main focus is on diffusion problems governed by a scalar elliptic partial differential equation with a strongly anisotropic coefficient tensor. The proposed method provides a high robustness with respect to non‐grid‐aligned anisotropy, which is achieved by the interaction of the following components: (i) an additive Schur complement approximation to construct the coarse‐grid operator; (ii) a global block (Jacobi or Gauss–Seidel) smoother complementing the coarse‐grid correction based on (i); and (iii) utilization of an augmented coarse grid, which enhances the efficiency of the interplay between (i) and (ii). The performed analysis indicates the high robustness of the resulting two‐level method. Moreover, numerical tests with a nonlinear algebraic multilevel iteration method demonstrate that the presented two‐level method can be applied successfully in the recursive construction of uniform multilevel preconditioners of optimal or nearly optimal order of computational complexity. The quality of the mesh used in the finite element discretizations will affect the efficiency of solving the discreted linear systems. The usual algebraic solvers except multigrid method do not consider the effect of the grid geometry and the mesh quality on their convergence rates. In this paper, we consider the hierarchical quadratic discretizations of three‐dimensional linear elasticity problems on some anisotropic hexahedral meshes and present a new two‐level method, which is weakly independent of the size of the resulting problems by using a special local block Gauss–Seidel smoother, that is LBGS_v iteration when used for vertex nodes or LBGS_m iteration for midside nodes. Moreover, we obtain the efficient algebraic multigrid (AMG) methods by applying DAMG (AMG based on distance matrix) or DAMG‐PCG (PCG with DAMG as a preconditioner) to the solution of the coarse level equation. The resulting AMG methods are then applied to a practical example as a long beam. The numerical results verify the efficiency and robustness of the proposed AMG algorithms. A typical approach to decrease computational costs and memory requirements of classical algebraic multigrid methods is to replace a conservative coarsening algorithm and short‐distance interpolation on a fixed number of fine levels by an aggressive coarsening with a long‐distance interpolation. Although the quality of the resulting algebraic multigrid grid preconditioner often deteriorates in terms of convergence rates and iteration counts of the preconditioned iterative solver, the overall performance can improve substantially. We investigate here, as an alternative, a possibility to replace the classical aggressive coarsening by aggregation, which is motivated by the fact that the convergence of aggregation methods can be independent of the problem size provided that the number of levels is fixed. The relative simplicity of aggregation can lead to improved solution and setup costs. The numerical experiments show the relevance of the proposed combination on both academic and benchmark problems in reservoir simulation from oil industry. Nonsymmetric saddle point problems arise in a wide variety of applications in computational science and engineering. The aim of this paper is to discuss the numerical behavior of several nonsymmetric iterative methods applied for solving the saddle point systems via the Schur complement reduction or the null-space projection approach. Krylov subspace methods often produce the iterates which fluctuate rather strongly. Here we address the question whether large intermediate approximate solutions reduce the final accuracy of these two-level (inner–outer) iteration algorithms. We extend our previous analysis obtained for symmetric saddle point problems and distinguish between three mathematically equivalent back-substitution schemes which lead to a different numerical behavior when applied in finite precision arithmetic. Theoretical results are then illustrated on a simple model example.  相似文献

This paper deals with boundary‐value methods (BVMs) for ordinary and neutral differential‐algebraic equations. Different from what has been done in Lei and Jin (Lecture Notes in Computer Science, vol. 1988. Springer: Berlin, 2001; 505–512), here, we directly use BVMs to discretize the equations. The discretization will lead to a nonsymmetric large‐sparse linear system, which can be solved by the GMRES method. In order to accelerate the convergence rate of GMRES method, two Strang‐type block‐circulant preconditioners are suggested: one is for ordinary differential‐algebraic equations (ODAEs), and the other is for neutral differential‐algebraic equations (NDAEs). Under some suitable conditions, it is shown that the preconditioners are invertible, the spectra of the preconditioned systems are clustered, and the solution of iteration converges very rapidly. Summary We introduce a multigrid method for the solution of the discrete Stokes equations, arising from a Petrov-Galerkin formulation. The stiffness matrix is nonsymmetric but coercive, hence we consider smoothing iterations which are not suitable for usual indefinite problems. We establish theoretical comparison results for algebraic multi-level methods applied to non-singular non-symmetric M-matrices. We consider two types of multi-level approximate block factorizations or AMG methods, the AMLI and the MAMLI method. We compare the spectral radii of the iteration matrices of these methods. This comparison shows, that the spectral radius of the MAMLI method is less than or equal to the spectral radius of the AMLI method. Moreover, we establish how the quality of the approximations in the block factorization effects the spectral radii of the iteration matrices. We prove comparisons results for different approximations of the fine grid block as well as for the used Schur complement. We also establish a theoretical comparison between the AMG methods and the classical block Jacobi and block Gauss-Seidel methods.  相似文献

We discuss the advantages of using algebraic multigrid based on smoothed aggregation for solving indefinite linear problems. The ingredients of smoothed aggregation are used to construct a black-box monolithic multigrid method with indefinite coarse problems. Although we discuss some techniques for enforcing the uniform inf-sup stability on all coarse levels, numerical experiments suggest that it is not strictly necessary. The proposed multigrid preconditioner shows robust behaviour for different time-step parameters and even for very elongated geometries, where other techniques based on h -independent preconditioners of the pressure Schur complement lose their efficiency.
