Small Ag and C particles, about 10 nm in diameter, are produced in gas suspension and precipitated on HOPG substrates for STM analysis. The STM pictures showed much smaller particle concentrations than anticipated from parallel TEM studies. The particles appear very flat in STM, not spherical as expected. These effects could be attributed to the nature of interaction between particle and surface, or to the interaction between tip and particle. Many of our experimental results are consistent with particles moving under the influence of the scanning tip.  相似文献

The photovoltaic effects of chlorophyll-a(chla) and the effects of stearic acid, egg phosphatide and cholesterol on those were investigated by means of measuring the photoinduced potentials of SnO2/chla electrodes. Because of the formation of liquid crystal states, appropriate concentrations of stearic acid and egg phosphatide added in a certain system could increase the photovoltaic effects of chla. Cholesterol always decreased the photovoltaic effects of chla because there was no liquid crystal state formed with it.  相似文献

Highly mono-sized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/liquid crystal (LC) microcapsules having a mono-sized single LC domain were prepared by the solute codiffusion method and solvent evaporation. The size of the LC domain in the microcapsules could be controlled by the amount of LC introduced during the swelling stage. The electro-optical properties of the polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) prepared by using the microcapsules was highly improved. In particular, the threshold voltage was lowered and the switching behaviour with an applied electric field was sharpened drastically compared with PDLC prepared simply by solvent evaporation-induced phase separation.  相似文献

In order to study the droplet pattern and electro-optic (EO) behaviour of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) with the addition of dye, dichroic polymer dispersed liquid crystal (DPDLC) films were prepared using a nematic liquid crystal (NLC), photo-curable polymer (NOA 65) and anthraquinone blue dichroic dye (B2), in equal ratio (1:1) of polymer and liquid crystal (LC) by polymerisation induced phase separation (PIPS) technique. Dichroic dye was taken in different concentration (wt./wt. ratio) as 0.0625%, 0.125%, 0.25%, 0.5% and 1% of the LC mixture in DPDLC films. Initially, in an open circuit when there is no proviso for external electric field (0 V), LC droplets in polymer matrix exhibited bipolar pattern, though on closing the circuit with the increase of electric field pattern of droplets starts changing, LC molecules align along the direction of applied electric field and aligned completely relatively at higher field (30 V), which illustrate vertical radial pattern. Further, results show that the DPDLC film containing 0.0625% dye concentration with consistent average droplet size ~4.30 μm, exhibits the best transmission at lower operating voltage.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The synthesis and characterisation of several members of the 1,ω-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yl) alkane (CBnCB) and the 1-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yloxy)-ω-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yl) alkane (CBnOCB) homologous series are reported. The new odd members described CB5CB, CB13CB, CB4OCB, CB8OCB and CB10OCB all exhibit twist-bend nematic and nematic phases. The members of these series already reported in literature, CB7CB, CB9CB, CB11CB and CB6OCB, were also prepared in order to allow for a direct comparison of their transitional properties. The properties of these dimers are also compared to those of the corresponding members of the 1,ω-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4,-yloxy) alkanes (CBOnOCB). For any given total spacer length, for odd members of these series, the nematic–isotropic transition temperatures and associated entropy changes are greatest for the CBOnOCB dimer and lowest for the CBnCB dimer. These trends are understood in terms of molecular shape. For short spacer lengths, the twist-bend nematic–nematic transition temperature (TNTBN) is higher for the CBnOCB series than for the CBnCB series but this is reversed as the spacer length increases. Of the CBOnOCB dimers, a virtual value of TNTBN was estimated for CBO3OCB and TNTBN was measured for CBO5OCB. These values are considerably lower than those observed for the corresponding members of the CBnCB or CBnOCB series. The dependence of TNTBN on molecular structure is discussed not only in terms of the molecular curvature but also in the ability of the molecules to pack efficiently. As the temperature range of the preceding nematic phase increases, so the twist-bend nematic–nematic transition entropy change decreases and the transition approaches second order for the longer spacers. For comparative purposes, the transitional behaviour of the even-membered dimers CB6CB, CB5OCB and CBO4OCB is reported and differences accounted for in terms of molecular shape.  相似文献

The different fluorinated liquid crystal (LC) molecules doped to E8 were used as LC component to prepare polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films. The mass fraction of the LC mixture is fixed 50.0 wt%. Results indicate that doping 8.0 wt% fluorinated LC molecule ME3CP to E8 significantly reduced the driving voltage of the PDLC films, and the driving voltage reduced with the rise of mass fraction of ME3CP. Besides, the terminal flexible chain length of the fluorinated LC molecule influenced the LC mixture properties based on E8, such as the dielectric anisotropy, birefringence and viscosity of the LC mixture, and the morphology and the electro-optical properties of PDLC films were controlled not only by the physical properties of the LC mixture, but also by the terminal flexible chain length of the fluorinated LC molecule .  相似文献

This contribution is a personal view of the rapidly developing subfield of nematic colloids, with an emphasis on possible applications of these materials in future photonic microdevices. A brief overview of the most important phenomena, observed in the past decade in nematic colloids is given. It is explained why integrated photonics based on microstructured liquid crystals is feasible and future challenges towards the realisation of integrated liquid crystal microphotonics are discussed.  相似文献

Two nematic liquid crystal (LC) monomers containing double bonds in the side chain were designed and synthesised. Length of the side groups varied from 1 to 2 methylene units. The side-chain polymers were synthesised by hydrosilylation reaction. The molecular structures of the intermediates and the LC monomers were characterised by Fourier transform infrared, elemental analysis and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The thermal phase behaviour of the monomers and polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and polar optical microscopy coupled with hot stage. The LC monomers showed only one nematic mesophase in the cooling process. And, the two polymers exhibit an enantiotroppic nematic mesophase either in the heating or in the cooling process.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The synthesis and characterisation of two new sets of non-symmetric liquid crystal dimers is reported, the 1-(4-substitutedazobenzene-4′-yloxy)-6-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yl)hexanes (CB6OABX) and 1-(4-substitutedazobenzene-4′-yloxy)-6-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yloxy)pentanes (CBO5OABX). The terminal substituents are methyl, methoxy, butyl, butyloxy, nitrile and nitro. All the CB6OABX dimers exhibit twist-bend nematic (NTB) and nematic (N) phases. The CBO5OABX dimers also all show an N phase but only the butyl and butyloxy homologues exhibit the NTB phase. The transitional behaviour of the non-symmetric dimers is compared to that of the corresponding symmetric dimers, the 1,5-bis(4-substitutedazobenzene-4′-yloxy)pentanes (XABO5OABX) and either 1,7-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yl)heptane or 1,5-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yloxy)pentane. The XABO5OABX dimers all show a nematic phase and in addition, the butyl homologue exhibits a smectic A phase. The difference in transitional behaviour between the CB6OABX and CBO5OABX dimers is attributed to the difference in their molecular shapes arising from different bond angles between the para axis of the cyanobiphenyl unit and the first bond in the spacer. Specifically, the all-trans conformation of a CBO5OABX dimer is more linear than that of the corresponding CB6OABX dimer. Differences within each set of dimers are attributed to changes in the average molecular shape and the strength of the mixed mesogen interaction on varying the terminal group. Crystal structures are reported for CB6OABOMe, CBO5OABNO2 and MeOABO5OABOMe.  相似文献

An electrochromic liquid crystal (ECLC) material composed of only liquid crystal (LC) and ionic liquid (IL) was developed. The LC containing the substituted diphenylacetylene serves as electrochromic (EC) material to realise transmittance and colour change under the direct current (DC) field, while the IL with the designable cation and anion served as electrolyte. Herein, a series of IL electrolytes was screened to investigate how IL tunes the electro-optic performance of the ECLC cell. By testing the electrochemistry window of ILs in EC cells, IL with the [NTf2]? anion shows adequate electrochemical stability when the EC material undergoes oxidation and reduction. The electro-optic performance of ECLC containing 1-ethoxy-4-[2-(4-pentylphenyl) ethynyl]-benzene (PEB) and IL was then evaluated by UV-vis spectrometry under the control of an electrochemical work station. Compared with other PEB-IL, PEB-[Bmim][NTf2] with [Bmim][NTf2] electrolyte shows a satisfactory transmittance at low operating voltage. Furthermore, Pd NPs in situ formed in [Bmim][NTf2] reduced the EC potential and improved the light scattering of the ECLC cell. In this work, we also designed a bifunctional device based on polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) that hosts electrochromic guest molecules, and analysed the electro-optical and electrochromic properties of LC electrolyte mixtures, in order to gain control of the incident daylight and glare in building and automotive applications.  相似文献

The condensed phase of the alternating copolyester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) and 2-hydroxy-6-naphthoic acid (HNA) is investigated by studying the room temperature packing arrangement of the copolymer chains. A molecular modeling methodology is employed with a Monte Carlo sampling of the configurational phase space. Realistic poly(HBA-alt-HNA) polymer chains are represented by an explicit atom representation of the HBA/HNA dimers. States are sampled from the NVT ensemble using a sampling scheme consisting of (1) valence and torsional variations, (2) rigid body rotations of the chain about the chain axis, and (3) rigid body translations of the chain. The effect of chain packing on the conformation of chains, as well as the relative intra- and intermolecular orientations of aromatic rings, is investigated. Correlation of chain positioning along the chain axis is dominated by aromatic rings maintaining a center-to-center plane of registry. These layers of aromatic units pack with a preference for edge-to-face orientations in a herringbone-type pattern and have an intermolecular ring angle between the pairs of aromatic rings in the unit cell that is ca. 68°. The aromatic rings, on average, are rotated 38° out from the b–c plane. The phenylene rings of these copolyesters are less restricted in their relative orientation in comparison to the naphthalene rings. Intramolecular orientational probability density distributions indicate a preference for staggering the successive aromatic rings along the chain, with a staggering angle of ca. 66°. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) of ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) and nematic 4-cyano-4?-n-hexylbiphenyl (6CB) or 4-cyano-4?-n-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) were prepared to study the effect of the remanent polarisation of the polymer on the liquid crystal alignment. We measured the macroscopic alignment of the liquid crystal molecules in the thickness direction by means of Infrared Transition-Moment Orientational Analysis. Electrical poling at 100 V/µm caused an increased order parameter up to 0.15. After subsequent annealing above the nematic-to-isotropic phase-transition temperature, the order parameter was reduced to 0.02. Nevertheless, the order parameter was still higher than for non-poled film indicating a slight orientation in thickness direction. Both values are lower than those expected from model calculations. In agreement with dielectric measurements, we attribute this result to the shielding effect of mobile charge carriers within the liquid crystal inclusions.  相似文献

利用扫描隧道显微技术(STM)研究了3种异代酯基Janus枝状分子(G1G2COOCH3, G0G3COOCH3, G1G3COOCH3)在高定向裂解石墨(HOPG)表面的组装结构. 室温下, G1G2COOCH3, G0G3COOCH3和G1G3COOCH3分别在表面形成有序、局部有序及无序结构. 将样品加热至60~80 ℃后, 表面无序结构可以转化为有序的二聚体密堆积结构. 实验结果表明, 随着枝状分子代数的增加, 分子之间及分子与基底之间作用力增强, 室温下分子组装行为更依赖于分子吸附动力学过程, 组装结构趋于无序化, 而加热可以增强枝状分子在表面的活动性, 调整分子的位置关系, 使表面无序结构转化为热力学稳定的有序二聚体密堆积组装结构.  相似文献

A series of non-symmetric liquid crystal compounds consisting of two different semi-rigid anisometric cores, namely 1,3,4-oxidiazole and biphenyl units, and two short terminal groups, have been synthesised in good yield. It has been shown by polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry that all these compounds display liquid crystalline behaviour, with nematic and/or smectic A mesophases. The nature of the mesophases is dependent on the electronic properties of the terminal groups. In methylene chloride solution all the compounds displayed a room temperature emission with λmax at 358–396 nm and quantum yields of 0.29–0.56. The effect of the terminal groups on the mesomorphic and photoluminescent properties is briefly discussed in the context of their electronic characteristics.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a method to accelerate the crystallisation of nematic liquid crystal mixtures based on crystallisation theory. This method is to hold a nematic liquid crystal sample at a temperature suitable for crystal growth after aging it at a temperature suitable for nucleation. After we specified these temperatures of a nematic liquid crystal mixture using differential scanning calorimetry, we demonstrate that the two-temperature aging method is effective for the crystallisation of other nematic liquid crystal mixtures in which the crystal-liquid crystal transition temperature has so far been undetectable.  相似文献

Series of low-birefringence liquid crystal mixtures composed of alkyl alkylbicyclohexyl carbonates and modified mixtures with other compounds have been formulated, their refractive indices and electric permittivity measured upon temperature. They exhibit the ordinary refraction index no lower than the refractive index of silica glass in a different range of temperature. This enables to observe in photonic liquid crystal fibres (PLCFs) a change in the light propagation mechanism from photonic band gap guiding to modified total internal reflection at different temperatures. Selected applications of PLCFs are also discussed.  相似文献

The choice of lateral and terminal substitution can have a major influence on the structure of a liquid crystalline supermolecule, which in turn can induce radically different phase behaviour. In this study we use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the shape of a liquid crystal dendrimer within a liquid crystalline solvent. A coarse-grained (CG) simulation model is employed to represent a third generation dendrimer in which 32 mesogenic groups are bonded to chains at the end of each branch of the dendrimer. In this CG-model the liquid crystal groups can be appended either terminally or laterally. This bonding option is used to generate the structure of four separate systems: (a) a dendrimer with 32 terminal mesogens, (b) a dendrimer with 32 laterally appended mesogens, (c) and (d) dendrimers with 16 lateral and 16 terminal groups represented with laterally bonded sites on one side of the molecule, model (c) or next to terminally bonded sites, model (d). The simulations show that the dendrimer is able to change shape in response to molecular environment and that the molecular shape adopted depends critically on the nature of the lateral/terminal susbstitution.  相似文献

以非离子表面活性剂十二烷基醇聚氧乙烯醚(AEO-9)/正丁醇/正辛烷/水组成的四元体系为研究对象,绘制了拟三元相图。在液晶区选取样品点,拍摄纹理照片,并结合^2HNMR谱图确定了液晶类型其中主要是状液晶。利用小角X射线衍射测定了层状液晶的层间距d,得到层间距d和液晶含水量的关系。根据层状液晶结构的特点,推导出层状液晶组成方程,并对本体系进行了验证。结果表明,根据议程计算出的液晶区域的开头和位置与实验测得的相图中液晶的开头和位置基本相同,为实际应用提供了依据。  相似文献

Thermotropic liquid crystal polyimide which has neither an ester linkage nor a carbonate linkage was prepared by the polymerization of 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PMDA) and 1,3-bis[4-(4′-aminophenoxy)cumyl)]benzene (BACB). This polyimide shows the liquid crystal phase at 549-593 K. Mixing this liquid crystal polyimide or copolymerizing BACB decreases the melt viscosity of the thermoplastic polyimide (Aurum). © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In the present study, ferromagnetic nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) of size (~20 nm, 40 nm) into ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixture has been dispersed and investigated. Effect of size of NiNPs on the electro-optic, dielectric and optical properties of FLC mixture have been studied and discussed. A minor improvement in spontaneous polarisation, rotational viscosity and faster response time in NiNPs-FLC samples than pure FLC is noticed. Goldstone mode of relaxation frequency ~100 Hz is detected in all samples and follow a Debye type relaxation behaviour. In addition, it is observed that size of NiNPs does not have any remarkable effect on relaxation frequency and dielectric strength. A single absorption peak at 363, 362 Hz is also noticed in pure FLC and NiNPs-FLC samples.  相似文献
