A voltammetric method based on a combination of incorporated Nafion, single-walled carbon nanotubes and poly(3-methylthiophene) film-modified glassy carbon electrode (NF/SWCNT/PMT/GCE) has been successfully developed for selective determination of dopamine (DA) in the ternary mixture of dopamine, ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA) in 0.1M phosphate buffer solution (PBS) pH 4. It was shown that to detect DA from binary DA-AA mixture, the use of NF/PMT/GCE was sufficient, but to detect DA from ternary DA-AA-UA mixture NF/SWCNT/PMT/GCE was required. The later modified electrode exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity towards AA, DA and UA thanks to synergic effect of NF/SWCNT (combining unique properties of SWCNT such as high specific surface area, electrocatalytic and adsorptive properties, with the cation selectivity of NF). On the surface of NF/SWCNT/PMT/GCE AA, DA, UA were oxidized respectively at distinguishable potentials of 0.15, 0.37 and 0.53 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), to form well-defined and sharp peaks, making possible simultaneous determination of each compound. Also, it has several advantages, such as simple preparation method, high sensitivity, low detection limit and excellent reproducibility. Thus, the proposed NF/SWCNT/PMT/GCE could be advantageously employed for the determination of DA in real pharmaceutical formulations.

Single-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (ssDNA)-wrapped single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were modified on the surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by covalent modification technique. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and cyclic voltammetric (CV) were used to characterize the properties of this modified electrode. The results showed that SWNTs-ssDNA composites were successfully immobilized onto the surface of GCE. Moreover, this modified electrode exhibited high stability, largely active areas, and efficiently electrocatalytic activities. It had been used for the analysis of various biomolecules, such as dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA), and ascorbic acid (AA), and the results were satisfactory.

A promising electrochemical biosensor was fabricated by electrochemical grafting of ribonucleic acid (RNA) at 1.8 V (vs. SCE) on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) (denoted as RNA/GCE), for simultaneous detection of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) with coexistence of excess amount of ascorbic acid (AA). The electrode was characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) techniques. The RNA modified layer on GCE exhibited superior catalytic ability and anionic exclusive ability in comparison with the DNA modified electrode. Three separated anodic DPV peaks were obtained at 0.312, 0.168 and ?0.016 V for UA, DA and AA, respectively, at the RNA/GCE in pH 7.0 PBS. In the presence of 2.0 mM AA, a linear range of 0.37 to 36 μM with a detection limit of 0.2 μM for DA, and in the range of 0.74 to 73 μM with a detection limit of 0.36 μM for UA were obtained. The co‐existence of 5000 fold AA did not interfere with the detection of DA or UA. The modified electrode shows excellent selectivity, good sensitivity and good stability.

Graphene/p-aminobenzoic acid composite film modified glassy carbon electrode (Gr/p-ABA/GCE) was first employed for the sensitive determination of dopamine (DA). The electrochemical behavior of DA at the modified electrode was investigated by cyclic voltametry (CV), differential pulse voltametry (DPV) and amperometric curve. The oxidation peak currents of DA increased dramatically at Gr/p-ABA/GCE. The modified electrode was used to electrochemically detect dopamine (DA) in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA). The Gr/p-ABA composite film showed excellent electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of DA in phosphate buffer solution (pH 6.5). The peak separation between DA and AA was large up to 220 mV. Using DPV technique, the calibration curve for DA determination was obtained in the range of 0.05-10 μM. The detection limit for DA was 20 nM. AA did not interfere with the determination of DA because of the very distinct attractive interaction between DA cations and the negatively Gr/p-ABA composite film. The proposed method exhibited good stability and reproducibility.

Nafion covered core–shell structured Fe3O4@graphene nanospheres (GNs) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was successfully prepared and used for selective detection dopamine. Firstly, the characterizations of hydro-thermal synthesized Fe3O4@GNs were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy. Then Fe3O4@GNs/Nafion modified electrode exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidations of dopamine (DA). The interference test showed that the coexisted ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA) had no electrochemical interference toward DA. Under the optimum conditions, the broad linear relationship was obtained in the experimental concentration from 0.020 μM to 130.0 μM with the detection limit (S/N = 3) of 0.007 μM. Furthermore, the core–shell structured Fe3O4@GNs/Nafion/GCE was applied to the determination of DA in real samples and satisfactory results were got, which could provide a promising platform to develop excellent biosensor for detecting DA.

Poly(2-amino-5-(4-pyridinyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole) (PAPT) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was fabricated and used for the simultaneous determinations of dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA) and nitrite (NO2 ?) in 0.1 mol?L?1 phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 5.0) by using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) techniques. The results showed that the PAPT modified GCE (PAPT/GCE) not only exhibited electrocatalytic activities towards the oxidation of DA, UA and NO2 ? but also could resolve the overlapped voltammetric signals of DA, UA and NO2 ? at bare GCE into three strong and well-defined oxidation peaks with enhanced current responses. The peak potential separations are 130 mV for DA–UA and 380 mV for UA–NO2 ? using DPV, which are large enough for the simultaneous determinations of DA, UA and NO2 ?. Under the optimal conditions, the anodic peak currents were correspondent linearly to the concentrations of DA, UA and NO2 ? in the ranges of 0.95–380 μmol?L?1, 2.0–1,000 μmol?L?1 and 2.0–1,200 μmol?L?1 for DA, UA and NO2 ?, respectively. The correlation coefficients were 0.9989, 0.9970 and 0.9968, and the detection limits were 0.2, 0.35 and 0.6 μmol?L?1 for DA, UA and NO2 ?, respectively. In 0.1 mol?L?1 PBS pH 5.0, the PAPT film exhibited good electrochemical activity, showing a surface-controlled electrode process with the apparent heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant (k s) of 25.9 s?1 and the charge–transfer coefficient (α) of 0.49, and thus displayed the features of an electrocatalyst. Due to its high sensitivity, good selectivity and stability, the modified electrode had been successfully applied to the determination of analytes in serum and urine samples.

Graphite electrode is modified by casting multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) wrapped with polystyrene sulphonate (PSS) onto the surface of the bare graphite electrode. The modified electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The behavior of the modified electrode towards the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) has been determined by cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and chronoamperometry (CA). The modified electrode showed better electrocatalytic activity towards AA, DA and UA compared to bare graphite electrode. The electrochemical oxidation signals of AA, DA and UA are well separated into three distinct peaks with peak potential difference of 222, 128 and 350 mV between AA-DA, DA-UA and AA-UA respectively in CV studies and corresponding peak potential separation in DPV are 228, 120 and 348 mV. This modified electrode was successfully used for simultaneous determination of AA, DA and UA in ternary mixture.

Herein, platinum nanoparticles-decorated molybdenum disulfide(Pt NPs@MoS_2) nanocomposite has been synthesized via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method, which was characterized by transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and powder X-ray diffraction(XRD). This MoS_2-based nanocomposite modified glass carbon electrode(Pt NPs@MoS_2/GCE) exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity toward dopamine(DA) and uric acid(UA) due to their synergistic effect. Two well-defined oxidation peaks of DA and UA were obtained at Pt NPs@MoS_2/GCE with a large peak separation of 160 m V(DA-UA), suggesting that the modified electrode could individually or simultaneously analyze DA and AA. Under the optimal conditions, the peak currents of DA and UA were linearly dependent on their concentrations in the range of 0.5–150 and 5–1000 mmol/L with detection limit of 0.17 and 0.98 mmol/L, respectively. The proposed MoS_2-based sensor can also be employed to examine DA and UA in real samples with satisfactory results. Therefore, the Pt NPs@MoS_2 nanocomposite might offer a good possibility for electrochemical sensing and other electrocatalytic applications.

This paper describes the simultaneous determination of ascorbic acid (AA), norepinephrine (NE) and uric acid (UA) using a graphene modified glassy carbon electrode (GME) in pH 4.0 phosphate buffer solution. The electrochemical behaviors of AA, NE and UA at a bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and the GME were studied by cyclic voltammetry. Bare GCE failed to resolve the voltammetric signals of AA, NE and UA in a mixture, whereas the GME not only resolved their voltammetric signals, but also exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity towards their electrochemical oxidation. The oxidation peak currents of AA, NE and UA were linearly proportional to their concentrations over the range of 1.0.0–1000.0, 0.6–45.0 and 1.0–100.0 μM, respectively, and their detection limits were 1.2, 0.10 and 0.60 μM, respectively, The modified electrode is of excellent sensitivity and selectivity, and has been satisfactorily used for the simultaneous determination of AA, NE and UA in their ternary mixture.

In this work, a new nanomaterial of thiol functional ferrocene derivative (Fc-SH) stabilized Au NPs/carbon dots nanocomposite (Au/C NC) coupling with graphene modified glassy carbon electrode (Fc-S-Au/C NC/graphene/GCE) was fabricated to serve as a quadruplet detection platform for ultrasensitive and simultaneous determination of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA) and acetaminophen (AC). The Au/C NC was synthesized by adding HAuCl4 into carbon nanodots solution without using any additional reductant and stabilizing agent. Then the Fc-SH was utilized as the protective and capping agent to modify the Au/C NC. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV–Vis, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were adopted to characterize the morphology and electrochemical properties of the materials and the electrodes. The Fc-S-Au/C NC/graphene/GCE exhibits a synergistic catalytic and amplification effects towards oxidation of AA, DA, UA and AC owing to the existence of the nanomaterial and electron mediator. When simultaneous detection of AA, DA, UA and AC, the oxidation peak potentials of the four compounds on the electrode can be well separated and the peak currents were linearly dependent on their concentrations. The quadruplet detection platform shows excellent linear range and ultrasensitive response to the four components, the detection limits were estimated to be as low as 1.00, 0.05, 0.12 and 0.10 μM (S/N = 3), and the modified electrode exhibits excellent stability and reproducibility. The proposed electrode has been successfully applied to detect of these four analytes in real samples with satisfactory results.

A novel electrochemical sensor was fabricated by electrodeposition of gold nanoparticles on a poly(L-methionine) (PMT)-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to form a nano-Au/PMT composite-modified GCE (nano-Au/PMT/GCE). Scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical techniques were used to characterize the composite electrode. The modified electrode exhibited considerable electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) in phosphate buffer solution (pH = 7.00). Differential pulse voltammetry revealed that the electrocatalytic oxidation currents of DA and UA were linearly related to concentration over the range of 5.0×10-8 to 10-6 mol/L for DA and 7.0×10-8 to 10-6 mol/L for UA. The detection limits were 3.7×10-8 mol/L for DA and 4.5×10-8 mol/L for UA at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. According to our experimental results, nano-Au/PMT/GCE can be used as a sensitive and selective sensor for simultaneous determination of DA and UA.

The electrochemical oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA), as three important biological molecules, have been studied at the bare, activated and multi-wall carbon nanotubes modified glassy carbon electrodes (MWCNTGCE) using different voltammetric methods. MWCNT-GCE not only exhibited both the roles of mediator and promoter for AA oxidation, but also performed the role of an excellent promoter for electrochemical oxidation of DA and UA when compared with bare GCE (BGCE) or activated GCE (AGCE). The results show that the oxidation of AA at MWCNT-GCE exhibits the characteristic shape typical of an EC catalytic (ErCi 'anism. In differential pulse voltammetric measurements, MWCNTGCE and AGCE could separate the oxidation peak potentials of AA, DA and UA present in the same solution, though the MWCNT-GCE remarkably improves the sensitivity of determination of the analytes and also reduces the fouling effects as compared to AGCE. Furthermore, the hydrodynamic amperometry at rotating MWCNT-GCE at constant potential was used for determination of AA, DA and UA individually in the presence of the other two species. It has been shown that using MWCNTGCE, these three species can be determined by amperometry with high sensitivity and selectivity. Finally, MWCNT-GCE has been applied to simultaneous determination of AA and DA in the related injection solutions and UA in a human urine sample with satisfactory results.

A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was anodically oxidized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) in 0.05 M sulfuric acid to introduce hydroxy groups on its surface (GCEox). Next, an imidazolium alkoxysilane (ImAS) is covalently tethered to the surface of the GCEox via silane chemistry. This electrode is further modified with graphene oxide (GO) which, dispersed in water, spontaneously assembles on the electrode surface through electrostatic interaction and π-interaction to give an electrode of type GO/ImAS/GCE. Electroreduction of GO and GCEox by CV yields electroreduced GO (erGO) and an electrode of the type erGO/ImAS/GCE. This electrode displays excellent electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA). Three fully resolved anodic peaks (at ?50 mV, 150 mV and 280 mV vs. Ag/AgCl) are observed during differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Under optimized conditions, the linear detection ranges are from 30 to 2000 μM for AA, from 20 to 490 μM for UA, and from 0.1 to 5 μM and from 5 μM to 200 μM (two linear ranges) for DA. The respective limits of detection (for an S/N of 3) are 10 μM, 5 μM and 0.03 μM. The GCE modified with erGO and ImAS performs better than a bare GCE or a GCE modified with ImAS only, and also outperforms many other reported electrodes for the three analytes. The method was successfully applied to simultaneous analysis of AA, DA and UA in spiked human urine.
Graphical abstract Differential pulse voltammetric simultaneous determination of ascorbic acid, dopamine and uric acid is achieved on a glassy carbon electrode modified with electroreduced graphene oxide and imidazolium groups, through anodic treatment of glassy carbon and silane chemistry.

This work reports on the preparation of electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO)-poly(eriochrome black T) (pEBT) assembled gold nanoparticles for the simultaneous determination of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) in PBS pH 6.0. Characterisations of the composite were carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry. As a result of the synergistic effect, the modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) possessed an efficient electrochemical catalytic activity with a high selectivity and sensitivity in oxidising AA-DA and DA-UA as compared to the bare GCE. The peak separations of AA and DA, DA and UA were 183 mV and 150 mV, respectively. The linear response ranges for AA, DA and UA were 10–900 μM, 0.5–20 μM and 2–70 μM with detection limits of 0.53 μM, 0.009 μM and 0.046 μM (S/N = 3), respectively. The sensitivity of ERGO-pEBT/AuNPs was measured as 0.003 µA/μM, 0.164 µA/μM and 0.034 µA/μM for AA, DA, and UA, respectively. The modified electrochemical sensor was used in the determination of AA, DA, and UA in vitamin C tablets and urine sample with good recovery.

Here, we described a new method for electrochemically selective detection of dopamine (DA). In this report, for the first time, electrochemical polymerization of 4-amino-1-1'-azobenzene-3,4'-disulfonic acid (acid yellow 9 dye (AY)) was carried out onto the surface of glassy carbon (GC) electrode and indium tin oxide coated electrode (ITO) from acidic solution containing AY monomers. A polymerized film of acid yellow on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The redox response of the poly(AY) film on the GC electrode showed a couple of redox peak in 0.1M sulfuric acid solution and the pH dependent peak potential was -58mV/pH which was close to the Nernst behavior. The poly(AY) film-coated GC electrode (GC/PAY) exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidations of dopamine (DA) in 0.1M phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 7.0) and increased the anodic peak current three time higher than bare GC electrode. GC/PAY did not reduce the considerable overpotential for oxidation of DA when compare to bare GC electrode. However, in contrast to other polymer modified electrode, due to the strong negatively charged back bone of poly(AY) highly repelled the important interference of DA, such as ascorbic acid (AA), uric acid (UA) and reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) in 0.1M PBS (pH 7.0) and did not showed any response for oxidation of these interferences. This behavior makes the GC/PAY for selective detection of DA in the presence of higher concentrations AA, UA and NADH. Using differential pulse voltammetry the calibration curves for DA were obtained over the range of 1-100muM with good selectivity and sensitivity. The proposed method provides a simple method for selective detection of DA from its interferences.

Graphene is chemically synthesized by solvothermal reduction of colloidal dispersions of graphite oxide. Graphite electrode is modified with functionalized-graphene for electrochemical applications. Electrochemical characterization of functionalized-graphene modified graphite electrode (FGGE) is carried out by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The behavior of FGGE towards ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) has been investigated by CV, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and chronoamperommetry (CA). The FGGE showed excellent catalytic activity towards electrochemical oxidation of AA, DA and UA compared to that of the bare graphite electrode. The electrochemical oxidation signals of AA, DA and UA are well separated into three distinct peaks with peak potential separation of 193mv, 172mv and 264mV between AA-DA, DA-UA and AA-UA respectively in CV studies and the corresponding peak potential separations in DPV mode are 204mv, 141mv and 345mv. The FGGE is successfully used for the simultaneous detection of AA, DA and UA in their ternary mixture and DA in serum and pharmaceutical samples. The excellent electrocatalytic behavior of FGGE may lead to new applications in electrochemical analysis.

A novel electrode was developed through electrodepositing gold nanoparticles (GNPs) on overoxidized-polyimidazole (PImox) film modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The combination of GNPs and the PImox film endowed the GNPs/PImox/GCE with good biological compatibility, high selectivity and sensitivity and excellent electrochemical catalytic activities towards ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA) and tryptophan (Trp). In the fourfold co-existence system, the peak separations between AA–DA, DA–UA and UA–Trp were large up to 186, 165 and 285 mV, respectively. The calibration curves for AA, DA and UA were obtained in the range of 210.0–1010.0 μM, 5.0–268.0 μM and 6.0–486.0 μM with detection limits (S/N = 3) of 2.0 μM, 0.08 μM and 0.5 μM, respectively. Two linear calibrations for Trp were obtained over ranges of 3.0–34.0 μM and 84.0–464.0 μM with detection limit (S/N = 3) of 0.7 μM. In addition, the modified electrode was applied to detect AA, DA, UA and Trp in samples using standard addition method with satisfactory results.
