Star ring homomorphisms between commutative Banach algebras

We consider a -ring homomorphism from a commutative Banach algebra with an involution to a commutative Banach algebra with a symmetric involution. We give the Gelfand transform of the -ring homomorphism image.

     

Similarity invariants for matrices over a commutative Artinian chain ring

Suppose that R is a commutative Artinian chain ring, A is an m × m matrix over R, and S is a discrete valuation ring such that R is a homomorphic image of S. We consider m ideals in the polynomial ring over S that are similarity invariants for matrices over R, i.e., these ideals coincide for similar matrices. It is shown that the new invariants are stronger than the Fitting invariants, and that new invariants solve the similarity problem for 2 × 2 matrices over R.     

Quasi-ordered rings - A uniform approach to orderings and valuations

A quasi-order on a set S is a binary, reflexive and transitive relation on S. In [3 Fakhruddin, S. M. (1987). Quasi-ordered fields. J. Pure Appl. Algebra 45:207–210.[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]], Fakhruddin introduced the notion of (totally) quasi-ordered fields and showed that each such field is either an ordered field or else a valued field. Hence, quasi-ordered fields are very well suited to treat ordered and valued fields simultaneously. The aim of the present paper is to prove that an analogous dichotomy holds for commutative rings with 1 as well.

A structure of ring homomorphisms on commutative Banach algebras

We give a structure theorem for a ring homomorphism of a commutative regular Banach algebra into another commutative Banach algebra. In particular, it is shown that:

(i)

A ring homomorphism of a commutative -algebra onto another commutative -algebra with connected infinite Gelfand space is either linear or anti-linear.

(ii)

A ring automorphism of is either linear or anti-linear.

(iii)

, and the disc algebra are neither ring homomorphic images of nor .

     

Higher Level Orderings on Modules

The aim of this paper is to investigate higher level orderings on modules over commutative rings. On the basis of the theory of higher level orderings on fields and commutative rings, some results involving existence of higher level orderings are generalized to the category of modules over commutative rings. Moreover, a strict intersection theorem for higher level orderings on modules is established.     

Derivations of the Lie algebra of infinite strictly upper triangular matrices over a commutative ring

Let 𝒩(∞,R) be the Lie algebra of infinite strictly upper triangular matrices over a commutative ring R. We show that every derivation of 𝒩(∞,R) is a sum of diagonal and inner derivations.     

Determinants of matrices over commutative finite principal ideal rings

In this paper, the determinants of $n\times n$ matrices over commutative finite chain rings and over commutative finite principal ideal rings are studied. The number of $n\times n$ matrices over a commutative finite chain ring R of a fixed determinant a is determined for all $a\in R$ and positive integers n. Using the fact that every commutative finite principal ideal ring is a product of commutative finite chain rings, the number of $n\times n$ matrices of a fixed determinant over a commutative finite principal ideal ring is shown to be multiplicative, and hence, it can be determined. These results generalize the case of matrices over the ring of integers modulo m.     

On idempotents of a class of commutative rings

Abstract

In the present work, a procedure for determining idempotents of a commutative ring having a sequence of ideals with certain properties is presented. As an application of this procedure, idempotent elements of various commutative rings are determined. Several examples are included illustrating the main results.     

Automorphisms of the standard Borel subalgebra of Lie algebra of Cm type over a commutative ring

All automorphisms of the standard Borel subalgebra of the symplectic algebra sp(2m,?R) are determined, provided that R is a commutative ring with identity, 2 is invertible in R.     

Injective modules and linear growth of primary decompositions

The purposes of this paper are to generalize, and to provide a short proof of, I. Swanson's Theorem that each proper ideal in a commutative Noetherian ring has linear growth of primary decompositions, that is, there exists a positive integer such that, for every positive integer , there exists a minimal primary decomposition with for all . The generalization involves a finitely generated -module and several ideals; the short proof is based on the theory of injective -modules.

     

Extension of orderings on -fields

An analysis is made of the ways in which a total ordering of the set of symmetric elements of a skew field with involution can be extended to an ordering of a larger set of elements. This is done for several different types of orderings found in the literature.

On a characterization of the maximal ideal spaces of commutative -algebras in which every element is the square of another

A topological condition is given for a locally connected compact Hausdorff space on which every complex-valued continuous function is the square of another. The condition need not be necessary nor sufficient unless the space is locally connected.

     

The homogeneous spectrum of a graded commutative ring

Suppose is a torsion-free cancellative commutative monoid for which the group of quotients is finitely generated. We prove that the spectrum of a -graded commutative ring is Noetherian if its homogeneous spectrum is Noetherian, thus answering a question of David Rush. Suppose is a commutative ring having Noetherian spectrum. We determine conditions in order that the monoid ring have Noetherian spectrum. If , we show that has Noetherian spectrum, while for each we establish existence of an example where the homogeneous spectrum of is not Noetherian.
