The general theory of gauge fields is used to develop a theory of electrodynamics in which the fundamental structure is non-Abelian and in which the internal gauge field symmetry is O(3), based on the existence of circular polarization and the third Stokes parameter. The theory is used to provide an explanation for the Sagnac effect with platform at rest and in motion. The Sagnac formula is obtained by considering the platform in motion to be a gauge transformation. The topological phases can be described straightforwardly with non Abelian electrodynamics, which produces a novel magnetic field component for all types of radiation, a component which is proportional to the third Stokes parameter. The theory provides a natural explanation for the inverse Faraday effect without phenomenology.  相似文献

The Aharonov-Bohm effect shows that the vacuum is structured, and that there can exist a finite vector potentialA in the vacuum when the electric field strengthE and magnetic flux densityB are zero. It is shown on this basis that gauge theory produces energy inherent in the vacuum. The latter is considered as the internal space of the gauge theory, containing a field made up of components ofA, to which a local gauge transformation is applied to produce the electromagnetic field tensor, a vacuum charge/current density, and a topological charge g. Local gauge transformation is the result of special relativity and introduces spacetime curvature, which gives rise to an electromagnetic field whose source is a vacuum charge current density made up ofA and g. The field carries energy to a device which can in principle extract energy from the vacuum. The development is given forU(1) andO(3) invariant gauge theory applied to electrodynamics. We do mean-field perturbation theory for U(1) lattice gauge theory in the axial gauge, and evaluate corrections from fluctuations up to fourth order for the free energy and plaquette energy. Comparing with similar results previously obtained in the Feynman gauge we find, to those orders studied, a gauge dependence of the size of the first correction term neglected with one exception. This gauge dependence decreases rapidly as the order of the approximation is increased. To any finite order, results in axial gauge are better approximations than results in the Feynman gauge. We speculate why. Assuming it to be generally true, we evaluate the first correction beyond the one-loop mean-field approximation to the free energy of SU(2) gauge theory with Wilson action in the axial gauge. This correction brings the mean-field result very close to Monte Carlo results for β > 1.6. It also makes the mean-field result identical, within a narrow margin, to ressumed strong coupling results in the interval 1.6 < β < 2.4, thus showing the absence of a phase transition. For both groups studied, we find that the asymptotic series of mean-field perturbation theory give much better approximations than do ordinary weak coupling series.  相似文献

Several problems in lattice gauge theories such as mean field theory or the few plaquette problem lead to the evaluation of the properties of one link in an external matrix source. This problem is solved here in the large N limit. There are two phases characterized by a single parameter, the average value of the inverse of the modulus of the eigenvalues of the external source. The third derivative of the free energy is discontinuous at the transition point.  相似文献

We consider some properties of TREDER'S tetrad theories, derived in I, using the field equations proposed by KASPER and LIEBSCHER . The linearized theory is considered, because the field energy becomes positive, if the energy of the weak field is a positive one. Using the dynamical equations, the field equations lead for the symmetric part of the field to the gauge invariant field equations in Hilbert gauge and to corresponding equations for the antisymmetric part. This means that in this approximation the dynamical equations replace the gauge invariance and the tetrad field corresponds to a mixture of tensor and scalar gravitons. We discuss possible experiments for showing the existence of scalar gravitons and limiting the free parameter of the theory.  相似文献

In this paper we apply the assumption of our recent work in noncommutative scalar models to the noncommutative U(1) gauge theories. This assumption is that the noncommutative effects start to be visible continuously from a scale λNC and that below this scale the theory is a commutative one. Based on thisassumption and using background field method and loop calculations, an effective action is derived for noncommutative U(1) gauge theory. It will be shown that the corresponding low energy effective theory is asymptotically free and that under this condition the noncommutative quadratic IR divergences will not appear. The effective theory contains higher dimensional terms, which become more important at high energies. These terms predict an elastic photon-photon scattering due to the noncommutativity of space. Thecoefficients of these higher dimensional terms also satisfy a positivity constraint indicating that in this theory the related diseases of superluminal signal propagating and bad analytic properties of S-matrix do not exist. In the last section, we will apply our method to the noncommutative extra dimension theories.  相似文献

In this paper we prove that over an asymptotically locally flat (ALF) Riemannian four-manifold the energy of an “admissible” SU(2) Yang–Mills instanton is always integer. This result sharpens the previously known energy identity for such Yang–Mills instantons over ALF geometries. Furthermore we demonstrate that this statement continues to hold for the larger gauge group U(2). Finally we make the observation that there might be a natural relationship between 4 dimensional Yang–Mills theory over an ALF space and 2 dimensional conformal field theory. This would provide a further support for the existence of a similar correspondence investigated by several authors recently.  相似文献

A torsion-free solution of the free gauge field equations of direct Poincaré gauge theory on a ten-dimensional Minkowski space is constructed. This solution exhibits nontrivial curvature two-forms, but shaves the metric structure down to that of a four-dimensional Minkowski space. Universality of this solution with respect to the choice of the free field Lagrangian is established.  相似文献

Confinement in a pure gauge theory at non-zero temperature may be discussed in terms of an order parameter which transforms under a global symmetry group, the center of the gauge group. Integrating out all degrees of freedom except this order parameter generates an effective scalar field theory for the order parameter, globally invariant under the center symmetry. We argue that the effective theory possesses only short-range couplings, and hence that the finite-temperature confinement phase transition (when continuous) is accompanied by long-range fluctuations only in the order parameter. Universality ideas then lead to predictions for the critical properties of U(1), Z(N), and SU(N) gauge theories for all dimensionalities of space-time. An explicit renormalization-group calculation is presented for the U(1) gauge theory in (2 + 1) dimensions, the results of which fit the general picture.  相似文献

We present a 5D gauge theory in warped space based on a bulk SU(2)L x SU(2)R x U(1)(B-L) gauge group where the gauge symmetry is broken by boundary conditions. The symmetry breaking pattern and the mass spectrum resemble that in the standard model (SM). To leading order in the warp factor the rho parameter and the coupling of the Z (S parameter) are as in the SM, while corrections are expected at the level of a percent. From the anti-de Sitter (AdS) conformal field theory point of view the model presented here can be viewed as the AdS dual of a (walking) technicolorlike theory, in the sense that it is the presence of the IR brane itself that breaks electroweak symmetry, and not a localized Higgs on the IR brane (which should be interpreted as a composite Higgs model). This model predicts the lightest W, Z, and gamma resonances to be at around 1.2 TeV, and no fundamental (or composite) Higgs particles.  相似文献

We investigate the continuum limit of a compact formulation of the lattice U(1) gauge theory in 4 dimensions using a nonperturbative gauge-fixed regularization. We find clear evidence of a continuous phase transition in the pure gauge theory for all values of the gauge coupling (with gauge symmetry restored). When probed with quenched staggered fermions with U(1) charge, the theory clearly has a chiral transition for large gauge couplings. We identify the only possible region in the parameter space where a continuum limit with nonperturbative physics may appear.  相似文献

Using algebraic topology, the appearance of the Quantum Adiabatic Phase over various parameter manifolds is investigated. The relation with nontrivial gauge bundles (both abelian and non-abelian) is studied and it is shown that the phase appears as a result of homotopically non-trivial mappings, induced by the Hamiltonian in the space of wave-functions. The cohomological picture is developed and some topological considerations concerning field theory anomalies in the Hamiltonian picture are presented. A proof of the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem is given inspired from the notion of the adiabatic phase.Work supported in part by the U.S. Department of Energy under contract DEAC 03-81-ER 40050  相似文献

SU (2) gauge theory coupled to massless fermions in the adjoint representation is quantized in light-cone gauge by imposing the equal-time canonical algebra. The theory is defined on a space-time cylinder with “twisted” boundary conditions, periodic for one color component (the diagonal 3-component) and antiperiodic for the other two. The focus of the study is on the non-trivial vacuum structure and the fermion condensate. It is shown that the indefinite-metric quantization of free gauge bosons is not compatible with the residual gauge symmetry of the interacting theory. A suitable quantization of the unphysical modes of the gauge field is necessary in order to guarantee the consistency of the subsidiary condition and allow the quantum representation of the residual gauge symmetry of the classical Lagrangian: the 3-color component of the gauge field must be quantized in a space with an indefinite metric while the other two components require a positive-definite metric. The contribution of the latter to the free Hamiltonian becomes highly pathological in this representation, but a larger portion of the interacting Hamiltonian can be diagonalized, thus allowing perturbative calculations to be performed. The vacuum is evaluated through second order in perturbation theory and this result is used for an approximate determination of the fermion condensate.  相似文献

In this paper we start the construction of a self interacting massless spin three field theory. The first order self interaction is constructed. The free field gauge invariance is modified by a term of first order in the coupling constant. Finally the abelian gauge transformation of the free Lagrangian is shown to become non-abelian.  相似文献

A new kind of gauge theory is introduced, where the minimal coupling and corresponding covariant derivatives are defined in the space of functions pertaining to the functional Schrödinger picture of a given field theory. While, for simplicity, we study the example of a \(\mathcal{U}(1)\) symmetry, this kind of gauge theory can accommodate other symmetries as well. We consider the resulting relativistic nonlinear extension of quantum mechanics and show that it incorporates gravity in the (0+1)-dimensional limit, similar to recently studied Schrödinger-Newton equations. Gravity is encoded here into a universal nonlinear extension of quantum theory. A probabilistic interpretation (Born’s rule) holds, provided the underlying model is scale free.  相似文献
