Homotopical linking and Morse index estimates in min-max theorems

The authors extend some well-known Morse estimates for critical points of saddle point type to some linking conditions recently considered in the literature. Applications are given for multiplicity results in PDE and existence of subharmonic solutions for a class of conservative ODE. Finite reduction and Morse index estimates for mechanical systems

A simple version of exact finite dimensional reduction for the variational setting of mechanical systems is presented. It is worked out by means of a thorough global version of the implicit function theorem for monotone operators. Moreover, the Hessian of the reduced function preserves all the relevant information of the original one, by Schur’s complement, which spontaneously appears in this context. Finally, the results are straightforwardly extended to the case of a Dirichlet problem on a bounded domain.     

Morse index of some min-max critical points. I. Application to multiplicity results

We give here a general result on lower bounds for Morse indices of critical points obtained by some min-max principles. Combining this information with a semi-classical inequality yields sharp estimates on the growth of some critical values, from which we deduce new multiplicity results for solutions of semi-linear second-order elliptic equations.

本文研究退化椭圆型方程-Δxu-(α+1)2|x|~(2α)Δyu=|u|~(p-1)u,(x,y)∈Rm×Rk和方程-Δxu-(α+1)2|x|~(2α)Δyu=|u|~(p-1)u,(x,y)∈Π的Liouville型定理,其中-Δx-(α+1)2|x|~(2α)Δy是Grushin算子,Π={(x,y)∈Rm×Rk:x10}或{(x,y)∈Rm×Rk:y10}.本文将证明,当1p(Q+2)/(Q-2)时,上述方程Morse指数有限的有界解只有零解,其中Q=m+(α+1)k为齐次空间的维数,因此,本文将Laplace方程的结果推广到含Grushin算子的方程.     

Unified min-max and interlacing theorems for linear operators

There exist striking analogies in the behaviour of eigenvalues of Hermitian compact operators, singular values of compact operators and invariant factors of homomorphisms of modules over principal ideal domains, namely diagonalization theorems, interlacing inequalities and Courant–Fischer type formulae. Carlson and Sá [D. Carlson and E.M. Sá, Generalized minimax and interlacing inequalities, Linear Multilinear Algebra 15 (1984) pp. 77–103.] introduced an abstract structure, the s-space, where they proved unified versions of these theorems in the finite-dimensional case. We show that this unification can be done using modular lattices with Goldie dimension, which have a natural structure of s-space in the finite-dimensional case, and extend the unification to the countable-dimensional case.     

Vanishing theorems,higher order mean curvatures and index estimates for self-shrinkers

In this paper we study non-compact self-shrinkers first in general codimension and then in codimension 1. We respectively prove some vanishing theorems giving rise to rigidity of the self-shrinker and then estimates involving the higher order mean curvatures for the oriented case. The paper ends with some results on their index when considered as appropriate \(\bar f\)-minimal hypersurfaces.     

Morse index of a cyclic polygon

It is known that cyclic configurations of a planar polygonal linkage are critical points of the signed area function. In the paper we give an explicit formula of the Morse index for the signed area of a cyclic configuration. We show that it depends not only on the combinatorics of a cyclic configuration, but also on its metric properties.

Morse indices of critical manifolds generated by min-max methods with compact lie group actions and applications

We derive some upper and lower bounds for Morse indices of critical manifolds generated by min-max principles for functionals invariant under a general compact Lie group or a finite group action. The results generalize the similar results in the nonequivariant (no group action) case. In doing so, we also generalize the extension theorem of Dugundji type in the nonequivariant case to the equivariant (group action) case. As an application, we obtain a precise growth estimate for the whole sequence of critical values given by the min-max procedure for some superquadratic second-order differential equations. It is well-known that this growth estimate is crucial in showing the existence of multiple solutions of some superquadratic perturbed Hamiltonian systems and equations.     

Some continuous index theorems

In this paper we give criteria of Fredholmness and index theorems for Toeplitz operators whose symbols take values in a W^*-algebra factor of type II₁.     

Finite Morse index solutions of exponential problems

We prove that the problem −Δu=eu$-\mathrm{\Delta }u={\mathrm{e}}^u$ has no negative finite Morse index solution on R³${\mathbb{R}}^3$ and give some applications to bounded domain problems.

Certain class of nonuniform estimates in multidimensional limit theorems

Quantities of the form | F(X) — G(X) | are estimated, where F and G are the convolutions of certain k-dimensional probability distributions, while X is a convex polyhedron in R^k. Estimates of the form | F(X) — G(X) | c(k)(F, G, X) are proved, differing from the known ones by the presence of the factor (F, G, X) in the right-hand side, which may turn out to be small if the polyhedron X is small in a definite sense.Translated from Zapiski Nauchnykh Seminarov Leningradskogo Otdeleniya Matematicheskogo Instituta im. Nonparametric estimates and limit theorems in abstract Skorokhod space

We give a definition of an abstract Skorokhod space. Morse index and the stability of closed geodesics

Let ind(c) be the Morse index of a closed geodesic c in an(n+1)-dimensional Riemannian manifold M.We prove that an oriented closed geodesic c is unstable if n + ind(c) is odd and a non-oriented closed geodesic c is unstable if n + ind(c) is even.Our result is a generalization of the famous theorem due to Poincar'e which states that the closed minimizing geodesic on a Riemann surface is unstable.
