An experiment with excised larynges was undertaken to investigate theinteraction between acoustic pressures in a pseudotrachea and the amplitude of vibration of the vocal folds. Pressure was measured beneath the vocal folds at three specific moments of the vibratory cycle: (a) when the superior margin of the vocal folds began to separate, (b) when the vocal folds were maximally apart, and (c) when the inferior margin of the vocal folds began to touch. Results indicate that in half the larynges investigated, the maximum amplitude of vibration increased as a function of: (a) increased positive pressure at the moment of opening, and (b) reduced subglottal pressure when the vocal folds were maximally apart. The implications of these experiments regarding involuntary register transitions related to trachea resonance are discussed in light of a previously proposed register theory.  相似文献

The acoustic effects of the laryngeal cavity on the vocal tract resonance were investigated by using vocal tract area functions for the five Japanese vowels obtained from an adult male speaker. Transfer functions were examined with the laryngeal cavity eliminated from the whole vocal tract, volume velocity distribution patterns were calculated, and susceptance matching analysis was performed between the laryngeal cavity and the vocal tract excluding the laryngeal cavity (vocal tract proper). It was revealed that the laryngeal cavity generates one of the formants of the vocal tract, which is the fourth in the present study. At this formant, the resonance of the laryngeal cavity (the 1/4 wavelength resonance) induces the open-tube resonance of the vocal tract proper (the 3/2 wavelength resonance). At the other formants, on the other hand, the vocal tract proper acts as a closed tube, because the laryngeal cavity has only a small contribution to generating these formants and the effective closed end of the whole vocal tract is the junction between the laryngeal cavity and the vocal tract proper.  相似文献

Proposed mechanisms for single-mass oscillation in the vocal tract are examined critically. There are two areas that distinguish single-mass models: in the sophistication of the air flow modeling near the oscillator and whether or not oscillation depends on acoustic feedback. Two recent models that do not depend on acoustic feedback are examined in detail. One model that depends on changing flow separation points is extended with approximate calculations.  相似文献

A digital technique for high-speed visualization of vibration, called videokymography, was developed and applied to the vocal folds. The system uses a modified video camera able to work in two modes: high-speed (nearly 8,000 images/s) and standard (50 images/s in CCIR norm). In the high-speed mode, the camera selects one active horizontal line (transverse to the glottis) from the whole laryngeal image. The successive line images are presented in real time on a commercial TV monitor, filling each video frame from top to bottom. The system makes it possible to observe left-right asymmetries, open quotient, propagation of mucosal waves, movement of the upper and, in the closing phase, the lower margins of the vocal folds, etc. The technique is suitable for further processing and quantification of recorded vibration.

The mucosal upheaval (MU), where the mucosal wave starts and propagates upward, appears only when the vocal fold vibrates. The location of the MU histologically and the effect of changes in mean air flow rate (MFR) and vocal fold length on occurrence of the MU were studied in twelve excised canine larynges. The lower surface of the vocal fold was marked to serve as a landmark for subsequent study. Cricothyroid approximation was performed to lengthen the vocal fold. After taking high-speed pictures or recording stroboscopic images from the tracheal side, a small cut wound was made at the mark. This wound served to compare the position of the MU with the histologically identified location of the mark. The larynx was then sectioned in the frontal plane. Before lengthening the vocal fold, the MU occurred on the area where the lamina propria became thinner and where the muscular layer neared the epithelial layer. After lengthening the vocal fold, the MU actually shifted medially compared with its original position. The subglottic area surrounded by the bilateral MUs became longer and thinner. Whether or not complete glottal closure during a vibratory cycle was achieved did not alter these findings. In contrast, with a fixed vocal fold length the MU appeared more laterally as MFR increased, but, based on the relation with the mark, its location on the vocal fold did not change from its original position before increase of MFR.  相似文献

Coupling between the vocal folds is one of the nonlinear mechanisms allowing regulation and synchronization of mucosal vibration. The purpose of this study was to establish that modulations such as diplophonia and abnormalities observed in vocal signals that may be observed in some cases of laryngeal pathology can be considered as nonlinear behavior due to the persistence of some physical interaction (coupling). An experimental model using excised porcine larynx was designed to create tension asymmetry between the vocal folds and to obtain vocal signals with modulations. Signals were analyzed by spectral analysis and the phase portrait method. Results were compared with computer-generated synthetic signals corresponding to nonlinear combinations of sinusoid signals. Under these conditions, evidence of nonlinear behavior was detected in 85% of experimental signals. These findings were interpreted as a demonstration of vocal fold interaction. Based on these findings, the authors conclude that (1) coupling must be taken into account in physical models of laryngeal physiology, and that (2) methods of nonlinear dynamics may be used for objective voice analysis.  相似文献

In this paper, a finite-element model is used to simulate anterior-posterior biphonation [Neubauer et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 110(6), 3179-3192 (2001)]. The anterior-posterior stiffness asymmetric factor and the anterior-posterior shape asymmetric factor describe the asymmetry properties of vocal folds. Spatiotemporal plot, spectral analysis, anterior-posterior fundamental frequency ratio, cross covariation function, and correlation length quantitatively estimate the spatial asymmetry of vocal fold oscillations. Calculation results show that the anterior-posterior stiffness asymmetry decreases the spatial coherence of vocal fold vibration. When the stiffness asymmetry reaches a certain level, the drop in spatial coherence desynchronizes the vibration modes. The anterior and posterior sides of the vocal fold oscillate with two independent fundamental frequencies (f(a) and f(p)). The complex spectral characteristics of vocal fold vibration under biphonation conditions can be explained by the linear combination of f(a) and f(p). Empirical orthogonal eigenfunctions prove the existence of higher-order anterior-posterior modes when anterior-posterior biphonation occurs. Then, it is found that the anterior-posterior shape asymmetry also decreases the spatial coherence of vocal fold vibration, and shape asymmetry is a possible reason for anterior-posterior biphonation.  相似文献

Adjustments to cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscle activation are critical to the control of fundamental frequency and aerodynamic aspects of vocal fold vibration in humans. The aerodynamic and physical effects of these muscles are not well understood and are difficult to study in vivo. Knowledge of the contributions of these two muscles is essential to understanding both normal and disordered voice physiology. In this study, a three-mass model for voice simulation in adult males was used to produce systematic changes to cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscle activation levels. Predicted effects on fundamental frequency, aerodynamic quantities, and physical quantities of vocal fold vibration were assessed. Certain combinations of these muscle activations resulted in aerodynamic and physical characteristics of vibration that might increase the mechanical stress placed on the vocal fold tissue.  相似文献

The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine if laryngeal transillumination in combination with stroboscopy (strobophotoglottography; SPGG) is useful for (1) the visualization of vocal fold vibration (VFV) opening patterns, (2) the localization of initial vocal fold opening in horizontal glottal thirds (anterior, midmembranous, and posterior), (3) determination of the temporal correspondence of the so-called electroglottography (EGG)-knee and initial vocal fold separation, and, finally, (4) automatized quantitative measurements of glottal area function within endoscopic images. With stroboscopic transillumination, initial inferior vocal fold separation was detectable during the "closed" phase, where the vocal folds were still closed in the upper portion and therefore initial inferior vocal fold separation could not be visualized with usual laryngoscopy techniques. In the horizontal plane within similar fundamental frequencies in modal voice registers in two male subjects, localization of initial glottal opening depended on the voice types used (soft, normal, or pressed phonation). We found zipperlike posterior-to-anterior openings, initial midmembranous openings, initial anterior openings, as well as simultaneous initial opening of all three portions in the two healthy male adults examined. This technique proved to add temporal and spatial information to vocal fold opening patterns and extends our examination techniques to the very beginning of vocal fold opening at the inferior portion. Simultaneous electroglottogram tracking and comparison with bidirectionally illuminated stroboscopic images revealed a time-locked correspondence of the EGG-knee with the aforementioned initial inferior vocal fold separation. Bidirectional illumination combined with digital color extraction techniques allowed for image separation of subglottally and supraglottally illuminated structures. This facilitated vocal fold contour detection and automatized image processing, for example, for determination of glottal area function, and is considered to be a further step to objective automatized quantitative measurements within endoscopic images.  相似文献

This report is on direct observation and modal analysis of irregular spatio-temporal vibration patterns of vocal fold pathologies in vivo. The observed oscillation patterns are described quantitatively with multiline kymograms, spectral analysis, and spatio-temporal plots. The complex spatio-temporal vibration patterns are decomposed by empirical orthogonal functions into independent vibratory modes. It is shown quantitatively that biphonation can be induced either by left-right asymmetry or by desynchronized anterior-posterior vibratory modes, and the term "AP (anterior-posterior) biphonation" is introduced. The presented phonation examples show that for normal phonation the first two modes sufficiently explain the glottal dynamics. The spatio-temporal oscillation pattern associated with biphonation due to left-right asymmetry can be explained by the first three modes. Higher-order modes are required to describe the pattern for biphonation induced by anterior-posterior vibrations. Spatial irregularity is quantified by an entropy measure, which is significantly higher for irregular phonation than for normal phonation. Two asymmetry measures are introduced: the left-right asymmetry and the anterior-posterior asymmetry, as the ratios of the fundamental frequencies of left and right vocal fold and of anterior-posterior modes, respectively. These quantities clearly differentiate between left-right biphonation and anterior-posterior biphonation. This paper proposes methods to analyze quantitatively irregular vocal fold contour patterns in vivo and complements previous findings of desynchronization of vibration modes in computer modes and in in vitro experiments.  相似文献

Voiced sounds were simulated with a computer model of the vocal fold composed of a single mass vibrating both parallel and perpendicular to the airflow. Similarities with the two-mass model are found in the amplitudes of the glottal area and the glottal volume flow velocity, the variation in the volume flow waveform with the vocal tract shape, and the dependence of the oscillation amplitude upon the average opening area of the glottis, among other similar features. A few dissimilarities are also found in the more symmetric glottal and volume flow waveforms in the rising and falling phases. The major improvement of the present model over the two-mass model is that it yields a smooth transition between oscillations with an inductive load and a capacitive load of the vocal tract with no sudden jumps in the vibration frequency. Self-excitation is possible both below and above the first formant frequency of the vocal tract. By taking advantage of the wider continuous frequency range, the two-dimensional model can successfully be applied to the sound synthesis of a high-pitched soprano singing, where the fundamental frequency sometimes exceeds the first formant frequency.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to develop an analysis system for studying the relationship between vocal fold vibration and the associated transglottal airflow. Recordings of airflow, electroglottography (EGG), oral air pressure, and acoustic signals were performed simultaneously with high-speed imaging at a rate of approximately 1900 frames/s. Inverse filtered airflow is compared with the simultaneous glottal area extracted from the high-speed image sequence. The accuracy of the synchronization between the camera images and the foot pedal synchronization pulse was examined, showing that potential synchronization errors increase with time distance to the synchronization pulse. Therefore, analysis was limited to material near the synchronization pulse. Results corroborate previous predictions that air flow lags behind area, but also they reveal that relationships between these two entities may be complex and apparently varying with phonation mode.  相似文献

This study examined whether vocal fold kinematics prior to phonation differed between hard (glottal), normal, or breathy onsets in men and women. Glottal landmarks were identified and digitized from videotape recorded with a rigid laryngoscope during different voice onset types. Significant linear relationships (p 0.0055) were found among onset types on measures of (a) gesture duration when moving from 80% to 20% of maximum distance during adduction, (b) maximum velocity, (c) duration between the completion of adduction and phonation onset, and (d) ratios of maximum velocity to maximum distance between the vocal processes, an estimate of stiffness. The gesture duration was greatest for breathy onsets and least for hard onsets, while the maximum velocity, latency between adduction and phonation onset, and estimated stiffness were greatest for hard onsets and least for breathy onsets. The results suggest that one trajectory seems to be used with increases in gesture duration being accompanied by decreases in articulator stiffness when moving from hard to normal to breathy voice onset types.  相似文献

Rhabdomyomas of the larynx are exceedingly rare. The incidence, sites of occurrence in the larynx, and treatment of these benign striated muscle tumors are reviewed. A case of rhabdomyoma involving the vocalis muscle is presented with magnetic resonance imaging and video-stroboscopic documentation.  相似文献

Vocal fold vibratory asymmetry is often associated with inefficient sound production through its impact on source spectral tilt. This association is investigated in both a computational voice production model and a group of 47 human subjects. The model provides indirect control over the degree of left-right phase asymmetry within a nonlinear source-filter framework, and high-speed videoendoscopy provides in vivo measures of vocal fold vibratory asymmetry. Source spectral tilt measures are estimated from the inverse-filtered spectrum of the simulated and recorded radiated acoustic pressure. As expected, model simulations indicate that increasing left-right phase asymmetry induces steeper spectral tilt. Subject data, however, reveal that none of the vibratory asymmetry measures correlates with spectral tilt measures. Probing further into physiological correlates of spectral tilt that might be affected by asymmetry, the glottal area waveform is parameterized to obtain measures of the open phase (open/plateau quotient) and closing phase (speed/closing quotient). Subjects' left-right phase asymmetry exhibits low, but statistically significant, correlations with speed quotient (r=0.45) and closing quotient (r=-0.39). Results call for future studies into the effect of asymmetric vocal fold vibration on glottal airflow and the associated impact on voice source spectral properties and vocal efficiency.  相似文献

Elastic models of vocal fold tissues   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Elastic properties of canine vocal fold tissue (muscle and mucosa) were obtained through a series of experiments conducted in vitro and were modeled mathematically. The elastic properties play a significant role in quantitative analysis of vocal fold vibrations and theory of pitch control. Samples of vocalis muscle and mucosa were dissected and prepared from dog larynges a few minutes premortem and kept in a Krebs solution at a temperature of 37 +/- 1 degrees C and a pH of 7.4 +/- 0.05. Samples of muscle tissue and mucosa were stretched and released in a slow, sinusoidal fashion. Force and displacement of the samples were measured with a dual-servo system (ergometer). After digitization, stress-strain data for samples of muscle tissue and cover tissue were averaged. The stress-strain data were then fitted numerically by polynomial and exponential models.  相似文献

Simplified models have been used to simulate and study the flow-induced vibrations of the human vocal folds. While it is clear that the models' responses are sensitive to geometry, it is not clear how and to what extent specific geometric features influence model motion. In this study geometric features that played significant roles in governing the motion of a two-layer (body-cover), two-dimensional, finite element vocal fold model were identified. The model was defined using a flow solver based on the viscous, unsteady, Navier-Stokes equations and a solid solver that allowed for large strain and deformation. A screening-type design-of-experiments approach was used to identify the relative importance of 13 geometric parameters. Five output measures were analyzed to assess the magnitude of each geometric parameter's effect on the model's motion. The measures related to frequency, glottal width, flow rate, intraglottal angle, and intraglottal phase delay. The most significant geometric parameters were those associated with the cover--primarily the pre-phonatory intraglottal angle--as well as the body inferior angle. Some models exhibited evidence of improved model motion, including mucosal wave-like motion and alternating convergent-divergent glottal profiles, although further improvements are still needed to more closely mimic human vocal fold motion.  相似文献

Two cases of bilateral vocal fold immobility (VFI) after identification and preservation of the recurrent laryngeal nerves (RLNs) required tracheotomy until vocal fold recovery. The first patient underwent thyroid surgery without preoperative or postoperative evaluation of the vocal folds, administration of postoperative intravenous steroids, or electrophysiologic monitoring of the RLNs, whereas the second patient underwent a thyroid procedure in which all of the aforementioned were executed. Preoperative and postoperative clinical evaluation of the RLNs is strongly suggested in patients undergoing thyroid surgery, especially revision surgery. Patients potentially undergoing total thyroidectomy should be counseled about the remote chance of airway obstruction and should be properly selected for this operation. Subclinical stretching of the RLNs or ischemia from the endotracheal tube cuff can result in unilateral VFI, and rarely bilateral VFI, requiring reintubation, tracheotomy, or vocal fold lateralization. Electrophysiologic monitoring may not always predict bilateral VFI.  相似文献
