This paper describes a method to obtain polymer blends by the absorption of a liquid solution of monomer, initiator, and a crosslinking agent in suspension type porous poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) particles, forming a dry blend. These PVC/monomer dry blends are reactively polymerized in a twin‐screw extruder to obtain the in situ polymerization in a melt state of various blends: PVC/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PVC/PMMA), PVC/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVC/PVAc), PVC/poly(butyl acrylate) (PVC/PBA) and PVC/poly(ethylhexyl acrylate) (PVC/PEHA). Physical PVC/PMMA blends were produced, and the properties of those blends are compared to reactive blends of similar compositions. Owing to the high polymerization temperature (180°C), the polymers formed in this reactive polymerization process have low molecular weight. These short polymer chains plasticize the PVC phase reducing the melt viscosity, glass transition and the static modulus. Reactive blends of PVC/PMMA and PVC/PVAc are more compatible than the reactive PVC/PBA and PVC/PEHA blends. Reactive PVC/PMMA and PVC/PVAc blends are transparent, form single phase morphology, have single glass transition temperature (Tg), and show mechanical properties that are not inferior than that of neat PVC. Reactive PVC/PBA and PVC/PEHA blends are incompatible and two discrete phases are observed in each blend. However, those blends exhibit single glass transition owing to low content of the dispersed phase particles, which is probably too low to be detected by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) as a separate Tg value. The reactive PVC/PEHA show exceptional high elongation at break (~90%) owing to energy absorption optimized at this dispersed particle size (0.2–0.8 µm). Nanostructured amorphous bulk polymer samples were produced by processing them with small molecule hosts. Urea (U) and gamma‐cyclodextrin (γ‐CD) were utilized to form crystalline inclusion compounds (ICs) with low and high molecular weight as‐received (asr‐) poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and their blends as included guests. Upon careful removal of the host crystalline U and γ‐CD lattices, nanostructured coalesced (c‐) bulk PVAc, PMMA, and PVAc/PMMA blend samples were obtained, and their glass‐transition temperatures, Tgs, measured. In addition, non‐stoichiometric (n‐s)‐IC samples of each were formed with γ‐CD as the host. The Tgs of the un‐threaded, un‐included portions of their chains were observed as a function of their degree of inclusion. In all the cases, these nanostructured PVAc and PMMA samples exhibited Tgs elevated above those of their as‐received and solution‐cast samples. Based on their comparison, several conclusions were reached concerning how their molecular weights, the organization of chains in their coalesced samples, and the degree of constraint experienced by un‐included portions of their chains in (n‐s)‐γ‐CD‐IC samples with different stoichiometries affect their chain mobilities and resultant Tgs. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary The sorption property of water vapor by poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) of relatively low glass transition temperature (T g) was studied at temperatures nearT g.Tcg of humidity-controlled samples of various moisture contents was measured and its variation with the moisture content was determined.T g of the dry sample was estimated by dilatometry and DSC methods, and to confirm the value, the temperature dependence of mutual diffusion coefficient of the system of water vapor + PVAc was determined. A difference between the sorption mechanisms of water vapor by PVAc at 20 and 30 °C was observed: two sorption mechanisms are involved at 30 °C, while three mechanisms at 20 °C are involved which include the above two and another intermediate one. In earlier stage of sorption, at both 20 and 30 °C, water molecules sorbed by PVAc showed a tendency towards aggregation, while a mixing effect was found at higher stage of the sorption.

Diglycidyl ether of bisfenol-A (DGEBA)/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc)/poly(4-vinyl phenol) brominated (PVPhBr) ternary blends cured with 4,4’-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Homogeneous (DGEBA+DDM)/PVPhBr networks with a unique T g are generated. Ternary blends (DGEBA+DDM)/PVAc/PVPhBr are initially miscible and phase separate upon curing arising two T gs that correspond to a PVAc-rich phase and to epoxy network phase. Increasing the PVPhBr content the T gof the PVAc phase move to higher temperatures as a consequence of the PVAc-PVPhBr interactions. Different morphologies are generated as a function of the blend composition.  相似文献

The photon transmission technique was used to monitor the temperature evolution of film formation from poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) latex particles with two different molecular weights. Two sets of latex films were prepared below the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PVAc, which are named as low (LM) and high molecular weight (HM) films. These films were annealed at elevated temperatures above the Tg of PVAc for various time intervals. It is observed that transmitted photon intensity (Itr) from these films increased as the annealing temperature was increased. Onset temperatures (TH) at given times (τH) for starting the optical clarity of LM and HM films were measured and used to calculate the healing activation energies (ΔH) for the PVAc minor chains, and found to be as 28.1 kcal/mol and 27.7 kcal/mol, respectively. The increase in the transmitted photon intensity, Itr above TH was attributed to the increase in the number of disappeared interfaces between the deformed latex particles. Prager–Tirrell (PT) model was employed to interpret the increase in the crossing density of chains at the junction surfaces. The interdiffusion (backbone) activation energies (ΔE) were measured and found to be 177.5 kcal/mol and 210.7 kcal/mol for a diffusing PVAc chains across the junction surface of LM and HM latex films, respectively. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Melt blends of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(vinyl acetate (PVAc) were prepared andstudied by Torsional Pendulum Analysis (TPA) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). Two glasstransitions were found in these blends. The lower T_g corresponds to the segmental motion in thepure PEO. The dependence of the position and broadness of the higher T_g on composition of theblends indicates that the two components are compatible in the amorphous phase with micro-hetero-geneity. These T_g values observed from mixed PVAc/PEO phase are much higher than that calculatedfrom Fox equation. The comparison of the blends quenched and annealed from melt implies thatPVAc mixed with PEO at the segmental level on molten state and the deviation of T_g values fromFox equation could be due to variation of the blend's composition by crystallization of part of thePEO component. Further indication that the blends are compatible down to the level of chain segments and thatthere are specific interactions between PVAc and PEO molecules comes from the analysis of FTIRspectra of the blends and the solution of PVA in diethylene glycol dimethyl ether.  相似文献

Star‐shaped oligo[(D ,L ‐lactide)‐co‐ε‐caprolactone]s (PCLA) with various number average molecular weights were synthesized via ring‐opening polymerization of D ,L ‐lactide (DLLA) and ε‐caprolactone (CL) with organic Sn as catalyst and pentaerythritol as an initiator. The elastic amorphous interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of polyesterurethane/poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) were synthesized in situ by UV‐photopolymerization of PEGDMA and thermal polymerization of PCLA with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). IPNs are transparent soft materials and the gel content of the IPNs is exceeding 87%. They are rubbery when PEGDMA content is above 10% at room temperature. IPNs show good shape‐memory properties. IPNs recover quickly its permanent form in 10 sec when the environment temperature is above its glass transition temperature (Tg). IPNs have only one single Tg between the Tg of PEGDMA and polyesterurethane. The strain recovery rate (Rr) and the strain fixity rate (Rf) are above 90%. No characteristic peaks of PEG crystallites in X‐ray diffraction pattern (XRD) demonstrate that they are amorphous polymer networks. The wettability, degradation rate, mechanical properties, and Tg of the IPNs could be conveniently adjusted by changing PEGDMA content in IPNs. The soft IPNs are promising suitable as potential soft substrates with tailored mechanical properties for potential clinical or medical use. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The radiation-induced polymerization of glass-forming systems containing monomers has been investigated. It was found that irradiation below the second-order transition temperature Tg of the systems causes no in-source polymerization but causes a rapid postpolymerization on warming above the Tg after initial irradiation below the Tg. The post-polymerization was followed by differential thermal analysis and ESR spectra. It is caused above the Tg by the release of peroxy radicals trapped below the Tg, and its rate is proportional to the irradiation dose to some extent, often is explosively high, and brings about a remarkably large temperature rise by accumulation of polymerization heat. Irradiation above the Tg causes rapid in-source polymerization which is accelerated by the high viscosity of the monomeric system between Tg and Ts (WLF temperature) compared to crystal or ordinary solution polymerization. The temperature dependence of the in-source polymerization of glassy systems shows a peak between the Tg and Ts which may be the result of competing effects of the rate increase by the decreased termination near Ts and the rate decrease by the decreased propagation caused by the diffusion prevented near the Tg. The degree of polymerization was also investigated. The temperature dependence of the degree of polymerization of the polymers obtained by in-source polymerization shows a peak similar to that of the temperature dependence of conversion. Unusually large values of the Huggins constant k' are noted between Tg and Ts. The degree of polymerization of the polymer obtained by post-polymerized increases with the increase of irradiation dose and the polymerization rate; this may be the result of decreased chain transfer to nonpolymerizable components.  相似文献

The effects of the dynamic polymerization method and temperature on the molecular aggregation structure and the mechanical and melting properties of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) were successfully clarified. TPUs were prepared from poly (ethylene adipate) glycol (Mn = 2074), 4,4′‐diphenylmethane diisocyanate and 1,4‐butanediol by the one‐shot (OS) and the prepolymer (PP) methods in bulk at dynamic polymerization temperatures ranging from 140 to 230 °C. Glass‐transition temperatures (Tgs) of the soft segment and melting points (Tms) of the hard segment domains of OS‐TPUs increased and decreased, respectively, with increasing polymerization temperatures, but those of PP‐TPUs were almost independent of the polymerization temperature. Tgs of the soft segment and Tms of the hard segment domains of these TPUs polymerized above 190 °C were almost the same regardless of the polymerization method. Solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) analyses of OS‐ and PP‐TPUs showed that the relative proton content of fast decay components, which corresponds to the hard segment domains, in these TPUs decreased with increasing polymerization temperatures. These results clearly show that the degree of microphase separation becomes weaker with increasing polymerization temperatures. The temperature dependence of dynamic storage modulus and loss tangent of OS‐TPUs coincided with those of PP‐TPUs at polymerization temperature above 190 °C. The apparent shear viscosity for OS‐ and PP‐TPUs polymerized above 190 °C approached a Newtonian behavior at low shear rates regardless of the polymerization method. These results indicate that TPUs polymerized at higher temperatures form almost the same molecular aggregation structures irrespective of the dynamic polymerization method. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of temperature and composition on the inflection point in the time–conversion curve and the saturated conversion was investigated in the radiation-induced radical polymerization of binary systems consisting of a glass-forming monomer and a solvent. In the polymerization of completely homogeneous systems such as glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)–triacetin and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA)–propylene glycol systems, the time–conversion curve has an inflection point at polymerization temperatures between Tvm (Tv of monomer system) and Tvp (Tv of polymer system). Such conversions at the inflection point changed monotonically between 0 and 100% in this temperature range. Tv was found to be 30–50°C higher than Tg (glass transition temperature) and a monotonic function of composition (monomer–polymer–solvent). The acceleration effect continued to 100% conversion above Tvp, and no acceleration effect was observed below Tvm. The saturated conversion in homogeneous systems changed monotonically between 0 and 100% for polymerization temperatures between Tgm (Tg of monomer system) and Tgp (Tg of polymer system). Tg was also a monotonic function of composition. No saturation in conversion was observed above Tgp, and no polymerization occurred below Tgm. In the polymerization of completely heterogeneous systems such as HEMA–dioctyl phthalate, no acceleration effect was observed at any temperature and composition. The saturated conversion was 100% above Tg of pure HEMA, and no polymerization occurred below this temperature in this system.  相似文献

Abstract

The radiation-induced polymerization of glass-forming systems containing vinyl monomers was investigated. Irradiation below the secondorder transition temperature (Tg) of the systems causes no in-source polymerization but does cause a very rapid postpolymerization in the course of heating above Tg. Differential thermal analysis was carried out to estimate Tg and to follow the postpolymerization.  相似文献

The amorphous and crystalline phase behavior, spherulite morphology, and interactions between amorphous poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and poly(3-hydroxybutyric acid-co-3-hydroxyvaleric acid) (PHBV) were examined using differential scanning calorimetry, polarized-light optical and scanning electron, atomic-force microscopy (DSC, POM, SEM, AFM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The PHBV/PVAc blend was found to be miscible with an almost linear T g-composition relationship, indicating perfect homogeneity. Interaction parameter by melting point depression is a negative value of χ = −0.32, suggesting quite favorable interaction strength. With the intimate interaction between the amorphous PVAc and crystalline PHBV polymers, effects of PVAc on the spherulitic morphology of PHBV are quite significant. Owing to the higher T g of PVAc (than that of PHBV), the spherulite growth rate of PHBV was depressed by increasing PVAc content in blends. Neat PHBV exhibits ring-banded spherulites when crystallized at Tc = 60 ~ 110° C {T_{\rm{c}}} = {6}0\sim {11}0^\circ {\hbox{C}} ; however, with increasing PVAc content in the blends, the temperature range at which the PHBV/PVAc blends exhibit ring-banded spherulites remains similar but the regularity increases, and the inter-ring spacing significantly decreases. In addition, the spherulite size and ring-band patterns therein are strongly dependent on T max (190 vs. 220 °C, respectively, for erasing prior nuclei), from which the blends were quenched to a T c (60–110 °C) for crystallization. For PHBV/PVAc blends crystallized at the same T c from different T max, higher T max tends to erase nuclei, leading to larger spherulites. However, such larger spherulites owing to higher T max are not necessarily packed with thicker lamellae.  相似文献

Abstract

The mesomorphic properties have been studied as a function of the degree of polymerization for certain ‘side-on fixed’ polyacrylates. A peculiar evolution of the clearing temperature, T IN, as well as of the glass transition temperatures, T g, revealed that beyond a certain backbone length, T IN and T g decrease as the main chain length increases. The nematic ‘jacketed’ structure of these polymers induces a more or less high anisotropy of the polymer backbone conformation in the nematic phase and this can counterbalance the usual effect of an increase in the degree of polymerization on the thermodynamical properties of these systems. This evolution allows us to explain the unusual diamagnetic anisotropy anomaly observed as a function of temperature for this type of polymer.  相似文献

A model of simple molecule sorption in polymers is proposed which embraces both the glassy and rubbery regions, and incorporates the successful dual-mode model below the glass-transition temperature. Hole filling is shown to be an important sorption mechanism both above and below Tg, although saturation effects do not occur in the rubbery polymer. The model interprets the “dual-mode” Langmuir and Henry's law parameters at the molecular level, and a simple statistical mechanical analysis allows estimation of the parameter values, as well as specifying certain interrelationships between the parameters. Applications of the model to gas solubility data in five polymers are considered [polyethylene (PE), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), polystyrene (PS), polymethacrylate (PMA), poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc)] and semiquantitative agreement is obtained for PE, PET, and to a lesser extent, PS. For PMA and PVAc, the agreement is qualitative only.  相似文献

A procedure for the formation of intimate blends of three binary polymer systems polycarbonate (PC)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), PC/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and PMMA/PVAc is described. PC/PMMA, PC/PVAc, and PMMA/PVAc pairs were included in γ‐cyclodextrin (γ‐CD) channels and were then simultaneously coalesced from their common γ‐CD inclusion compounds (ICs) to obtain intimately mixed blends. The formation of ICs between polymer pairs and γ‐CD were confirmed by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was observed [solution 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)] that the ratios of polymers in coalesced PC/PMMA and PC/PVAc binary blends are significantly different than the starting ratios, and PC was found to be preferentially included in γ‐CD channels when compared with PMMA or PVAc. Physical mixtures of polymer pairs were also prepared by coprecipitation and solution casting methods for comparison. DSC, solid‐state 1H NMR, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and direct insertion probe pyrolysis mass spectrometry (DIP‐MS) data indicated that the PC/PMMA, PC/PVAc, and PMMA/PVAc binary polymer blends were homogeneously mixed when they were coalesced from their ICs. A single, common glass transition temperature (Tg) recorded by DSC heating scans strongly suggested the presence of a homogeneous amorphous phase in the coalesced binary polymer blends, which is retained after thermal cycling to 270 °C. The physical mixture samples showed two distinct Tgs and 1H T values for the polymer components, which indicated phase‐separated blends with domain sizes above 5 nm, while the coalesced blends exhibited uniform 1H spin‐lattice relaxation values, indicating intimate blending in the coalesced samples. The TGA results of coalesced and physical binary blends of PC/PMMA and PC/PVAc reveal that in the presence of PC, the thermal stability of both PMMA and PVAc increases. Yet, the presence of PMMA and PVAc decreases the thermal stability of PC itself. DIP‐MS observations suggested that the degradation mechanisms of the polymers changed in the coalesced blends, which was attributed to the presence of molecular interactions between the well‐mixed polymer components in the coalesced samples. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New inorganic-organic hybrid materials were prepared by free-radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with methacrylate-substituted oxotantalum cluster [Ta4O4(OEt)8(OMc)4] and their properties evaluated. The cluster was prepared by the reaction of the parent alkoxide with methacrylic acid. Samples of the hybrid materials were produced with Ta-cluster to methyl methacrylate in the ratios of 1:50 and 1:100 and were characterized by thermal and spectroscopic techniques. The glass transition temperatures of the hybrid materials are shifted to higher temperatures than pure PMMA as a result of cross-linking of the polymer by the oxotantalum clusters. The increase in Tg is also observed from the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Evidence of crosslinking between the Ta-cluster and PMMA is obtained from infrared spectroscopic study. Surface studies performed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) provide information about the atomic concentrations of the surface and indicate tantalum bonded to oxygen.  相似文献

Carbon-functional silylates were prepared by reacting trialkoxysilanes and trimethylchlorosilane with silicic acid which had been derived from aqueous sodium silicate solution. The trialkoxysilanes used here were polymerizable silanes, i.e., vinyltriethoxysilane, (γ-methacryloyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane, and (p-vinylphenyl)triethoxysilane. Molecular weights of these silylates containing more than one mole of the functional group ranged from 4000 to 9000. These silylates were found to serve as effective crosslinking agents for vinyl polymerization. However, soluble copolymers could be obtained under appropriate conditions, such as high dilution and low conversion in copolymerization. Glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the soluble copolymers were measured by differential scanning calorimetry to determine the effect of the silylates on the thermal properties of the copolymers. A slight variation of the Tg of these copolymers was observed when small amounts of the silylates were incorporated. It was also noticed that the water repellency of these copolymers was influenced by their composition.  相似文献

The dielectric permittivity and loss of Bisphenol-A-polycarbonate (PC) was measured over the frequency range 100 Hz to 200 kHz and temperature range 77–383 K. One sub-Tg relaxation peak is observed which rapidly broadens with a decrease in temperature. This is attributed to a progressive separation of the γ and β peaks, which at high temperatures are merged to form one peak of high strength. The strength of the sub-Tg relaxations decreases on physical aging of PC but is increased if the sample is quenched from a temperature above its Tg. Slowly cooled PC has a lower strength of its sub-Tg relaxation than a quenched specimen. The thermal history of PC affects the magnitude of its sub-Tg relaxation.  相似文献

Emulsion blends comprise an important commercial area of polymer blend utility. Surprisingly, the fundamental study of emulsion blends is rarely noted in the literature. This study investigates emulsion blends of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and vinyl acetate‐ethylene copolymers (VAE), where both components employ poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) as the protective colloid. PVOH comprises the continuous phase in the emulsion cast films for both the individual components and the blends. This provides an example whereby excellent adhesion can be expected between the particles comprising the blend. The combination of low Tg/high Tg emulsion blends has been noted to be of interest, and the PVAc/VAE emulsion blends noted here offer an excellent model to study. The PVAc/VAE blends protected with PVOH exhibit poor mechanical compatibility even though there is good adhesion. Conventional theory based on polymer/filler combinations predicts a rapid loss in elongation as filler content increases if excellent adhesion is observed. The PVAc/VAE blends (where PVAc is the filler) also exhibit similar behavior. This result implies excellent adhesion may not be desired where a compliance mismatch occurs for emulsion blends. The polymer/filler theories do not properly predict PVAc/VAE blend tensile strength results. A newer approach termed the equivalent box model (EBM) employing percolation theory agrees well with experimental results. Melt mixing of the low/high compliance PVAc/VAE emulsion blends yields a significant improvement in mechanical compatibility. This indicates that a heterogeneous mixture of the same components yields better mechanical results than an array of particles with excellent adhesion between the particles.  相似文献

Difunctional acrylates and methacrylate monomers have been made which are high order smectic liquid crystal (or crystalline) at room temperature. This report discusses materials with the following structure: F–S–M–S–F, where F is a functional group, acrylate or methacrylate (A or M); S is a spacer (CH2)n(n), and M is a mesogen—in this case 4,4′-dioxybiphenyl (B). They are codified as BnA or BnM where n is the number of methylenes in the spacer. High conversion with high Tg can be obtained when polymerizing in the smectic state because the reactive end groups are concentrated in a small volume and can react well with little or no diffusion. B2A, B3A, B6A, B11A, and B3M were polymerized in the smectic state and compared to polymers made at temperatures where the monomers were isotropic. High conversion was obtained below final Tg—even then, probably because the polymers were ordered. All the polymers were studied by WAXD and dynamic mechanical spectroscopy. Solid-state NMR on B3A showed that there was very high conversion of the double bonds at all temperatures. B3A photopolymerized in the smectic state (60–76°C) produced a crystalline polymer with Tg = 185°C (1 Hz). When photopolymerized at 85°C, above the isotropization temperature (Ti), a poorly organized polymer was obtained with a Tg of 155°C (1 Hz). Monomers with an odd number of methylene groups as spacers were crystalline after polymerization. With an even number of methylene groups, they lost most of their crystallinity on polymerization below Ti, but retained a low order smectic structure. Similar structures were obtained with all the monomers when they were polymerized above Ti. There was little effect of polymerization temperature on Tg when the spacers had an even number of methylene groups. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
