The miscibility of poly (styrene-co-4-vinylphenyldimethylsilanol) (ST-VPDMS) and poly (n-butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) blends has been investigated by means of DSC and FT-IR spectroscopy. It was found that miscible blends were formed only for the copolymers containing 9–34 mol % 4-vinylphenyldimethylsilanol (VPDMS). The glass transition behavior of the miscible blends was analyzed by recently proposed equations in terms of the physical meaning of the fitting parameters. The results of FT-IR study were found to be fully consistent with the observation of the miscibility window obtained from glass transition temperature measurements. Quantitative information concerning intermolecular hydrogen bond interaction in the carbonyl stretching vibration region of the miscible blends was obtained by curve-fitting method.

Polymer blends consisting of poly(styrene-co-4-vinylphenylmethylphenylsilanol) (ST-VPMPS) and poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) have been investigated. The experimental results showed that miscible blends were formed when ST-VPMPS copolymers contained 9–56 mol % silanol functional groups. Comparison of the results with poly(styrene-co-4-vinylphenyldimethylsilanol) (ST-VPDMS)/PBMA blends revealed that the miscibility window was shifted to a higher silanol composition in the present system in which a stronger hetero-associated hydrogen bonding interaction was present. The results were discussed in terms of steric shielding and electron-withdrawing effects of the phenyl substituent bound directly to the silicon atom.

The miscibility of tetramethylpolycarbonate (TMPC) blends with styrenic copolymers containing various methacrylates was examined, and the interaction energies between TMPC and methacrylate were evaluated from the phase‐separation temperatures of TMPC/copolymer blends with lattice‐fluid theory combined with a binary interaction model. TMPC formed miscible blends with styrenic copolymers containing less than a certain amount of methacrylate, and these miscible blends always exhibited lower critical solution temperature (LCST)‐type phase behavior. The phase‐separation temperatures of TMPC blends with copolymers such as poly(styrene‐co‐methyl methacrylate), poly(styrene‐co‐ethyl methacrylate), poly(styrene‐con‐propyl methacrylate), and poly(styrene‐co‐phenyl methacrylate) increase with methacrylate content, go through a maximum, and decrease, whereas those of TMPC blends with poly(styrene‐con‐butyl methacrylate) and poly(styrene‐co‐cyclohexyl methacrylate) always decrease. The calculated interaction energy for a copolymer–TMPC pair is negative and increases with the methacrylate content in the copolymer. This would seem to contradict the prediction of the binary interaction model, that systems with more favorable energetic interactions have higher LCSTs. A detailed inspection of lattice‐fluid theory was performed to explain such phase behavior. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 40: 1288–1297, 2002  相似文献

We prepared various copolymers containing styrene and methacrylates to examine their miscibility with polycarbonates such as bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC), dimethylpolycarbonate (DMPC), and tetramethylpolycarbonate (TMPC). Among the various copolymers examined, poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐cyclohexylmethacrylate) [P(MMA–CHMA)] copolymers containing proper amounts of cyclohexylmethacrylate (CHMA) formed miscible blends with PC and DMPC, whereas TMPC did not form a miscible blend with P(MMA–CHMA). However, TMPC was miscible with poly(styrene‐co‐cyclohexylmethacrylate) [P(S–CHMA)] copolymers containing less than about 40 wt % CHMA, whereas PC and DMPC were always immiscible with P(S–CHMA). Miscible blends exhibited lower critical solution temperature (LCST)‐type phase behavior. Binary interaction energies were calculated from the observed phase boundaries with lattice–fluid theory combined with a binary interaction model. The quantitative interaction energy of each binary pair indicated that the phenyl ring substitution of polycarbonate with methyl groups did not lead to interactions that were favorable for miscibility with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and CHMA, but it did lead to favorable interactions with styrene. The addition of CHMA to MMA initially increased the LCST but ultimately led to immiscibility with PC and DMPC; however, addition of CHMA to styrene always decreased the LCST with TMPC. The increased LCST of PC or DMPC blends stemmed from intramolecular repulsion between MMA and CHMA, whereas the decreased LCST of TMPC/P(S–CHMA) blends with CHMA content came from negative interaction energy between styrene and CHMA. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The phase behavior of a series of styrene/maleic anhydride (SMA) copolymers with various polyacrylate and polymethacrylate homopolymers has been investigated using various techniques. None of the polyacrylates are miscible with SMA copolymers. Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) and poly(n-propyl methacrylate) (PnPMA), are miscible with these copolymers over a certain range of maleic anhydride contents; whereas, the higher methacrylates apparently have no region of miscibility. For PEMA and PnPMA, the miscibility windows extend through 0% MA; hence, polystyrene is miscible with these polymethacrylates although the lower critical solution temperature is quite low. The exothermic heat of mixing styrene and ester analogs found here supports the observed miscibility of polystyrene with ethyl, n-propyl, and cyclohexyl (reported elsewhere) methacrylates. Lattice fluid interaction parameters for styrene-methacrylate obtained from the cloud points of these blends agree quite well with the Flory—Huggins parameters obtained from copolymer miscibility windows.

The FT–IR spectroscopic analysis and the thermal behavior of the blends of styrene-1-vinyl naphthalene copolymers [P(S-co-1VN)] and poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) were investigated in this work. The copolymers containing 23, 50, and 80% by weight of styrene were synthesized by radical polymerization. The blend films of the P(S-co-1VN) and PVME were cast from the mixed solvent of benzene/trimethylbenzene [50/50 (v/v)]. It was found from the optical clarity and the glass transition temperature behavior that the blends of PVME with P(S-co-1VN) of 80 wt % styrene and 20 wt % 1-vinylnaphthalene (1VN) show miscibility below 50 wt % of the copolymer concentration and the concentration range to show miscibility becomes wider as the composition of 1VN decreases in the copolymers. From the FT–IR results, the relative peak intensity of the 1100 cm?1 region due to COCH3 bond of PVME and the peak position of 774 cm?1 region due to the naphthyl ring of 1VN were sensitive to the miscibility of the P(S-co-1VN)/PVME blends. The frequency differences of the phenyl ring and the naphthyl ring in the P(S-co-1VN) from each frequency in the P(S-co-1VN)/PVME blends increase with increasing composition of styrene in the copolymers and with increasing concentration of PVME in the blends. A threshold energy exists to induce molecular interaction between the naphthyl ring of 1VN and the COCH3 of PVME and to result in the miscible blends, regardless of the copolymer composition as well as the blend concentration. The threshold energy was estimated as about 3.689 × 10?21 cal (779 cm?1) for the P(S-co-1VN)/PVME blend system. It can be concluded that the miscibility in P(S-co-1VN)/PVME blends is largely affected by the composition of the copolymers, and the blends become more miscible as the composition of styrene in the copolymers increases.

Summary: The miscibility and thermal behaviour of binary mixtures of poly(styrene-co-itaconic acid) containing 11 or 27 mol % of itaconic acid (PSIA-11 or PSIA27) with poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA)or poly(butyl methacrylate-co-4-vinylpyridine) containing 10 or 26 mol% of 4-vinylpyridine (PBM4VP-10, PBM4V-P26) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, FTIR spectroscopy and thermogravimetry. The results showed that 11 mol % of itaconic acid and 10 mol % of 4-vinylpyridine respectively introduced within the polystyrene and poly(butyl methacrylate) matrices induced the miscibility of this pair of polymers due to specific interactions of hydrogen bonding type with partial pyridine protonation that occurred between the two copolymers as evidenced by FTIR from the appearance of two new bands at 1607 cm−1 and 1640 cm−1. Increasing itaconic acid content from 11 to 27 mol % led to a decrease of the intensity of the specific interactions within PSIA-27/PBM4VP blends and is attributed to both accessibility and self association effects as evidenced by DSC from the change of the shape of the Tg- composition curves and by FTIR spectroscopy. As shown from the thermogravimetric study, the presence of these specific interactions delayed the anhydride formation and improved the thermal stability of the blends.

Thermal oxidation of blends of poly(vinyl methyl ether) and styrene copolymers containing hydroxyl groups as hydrogen-bond donors was studied. The hydrogen-bonding interaction provide for improved miscibility between the component polymers and more extensive crosspropagation/cross-termination reactions. In addition to their contribution to improved miscibility, phenol groups in the copolymers exhibited apparent antioxidant and prooxidant effects.

Miscibility of blends consisting of poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) and poly(styreneco-2-vinylnaphthalene) [P(S-co-2VN)] was investigated by means of Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and thermal analysis. Copolymers containing 21, 51, and 84 wt % of styrene were synthesized by radical polymerization. Based on optical clarity and glass transition temperatures, it was shown that the miscibility in P(S-co-2VN)/PVME blends is largely affected by compositions of the copolymers as well as concentrations of the blend. From the FT-IR results, the relative intensity at 1100 cm?1 peak of COCH3 band of PVME and the position of naphthyl ring of 2VN were sensitive to the miscibility of the blends. It was observed that blends of PVME with P(S-co-2VN) of 84 wt % styrene or P(S-co-2VN) of 51 wt % styrene are miscible over the entire concentration ranges of the blends. Blends of PVME with P(S-co-2VN) containing 21 wt % of styrene are immiscible below 65 wt % PVME. In the miscible P(S-co-2VN)/PVME blends, there was observed a large shift in the naphthyl frequency at a characteristic wavelength of 748 cm?1.

The miscibility of polysulfone (PSf) with various hydrophilic copolymers was explored. Among these blends, PSf gave homogeneous mixtures with poly(1‐vinylpyrrolidone‐co‐styrene) [P(VP–S)] copolymers when these copolymers contained 68–88 wt % 1‐vinylpyrrolidone (VP). Miscible PSf blends with P(VP–S) copolymers underwent phase separation on heating caused by lower critical solution temperature (LCST)‐type phase behavior. The phase behavior depended on the copolymer composition. Changes in the VP content of P(VP–S) copolymers from 65 to 68 wt % shifted the phase behavior from immiscibility to miscibility and the LCST behavior. The phase‐separation temperatures of the miscible blends first increased gradually with the VP content, then went through a broad maximum centered at about 80 wt % VP, and finally decreased just before the limiting content of VP for miscibility with PSf. The interaction energies of binary pairs involved in PSf/P(VP–S) blends were evaluated from the phase‐separation temperatures of PSf/P(VP–S) blends with lattice‐fluid theory combined with a binary interaction model. The decrease in the contact angle between water and the membrane surface with increasing VP content in P(VP–S) copolymers indicated that the hydrophobic properties of PSf could be improved via blending with hydrophilic P(VP–S) copolymers. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The binary interaction energies between styrene and various methacrylates were determined from newly examined phase boundaries with lattice–fluid theory. Because the blends of polystyrene (PS) and poly(cyclohexylmethacrylate) (PCHMA) were only miscible at high molecular weights when the blends were prepared by solution casting from tetrahydrofuran, we examined the miscibility of other blends by changing the molecular weights of PS or methacrylate polymers. On the basis of the phase‐separation temperature caused by the lower critical solution temperature, the miscibility of PS with the various methacrylates appeared to be in the order PCHMA > poly(n‐propyl‐methacrylate) (PnPMA) > poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) > poly(n‐butyl‐methacrylate) (PnBMA) > poly(iso‐butyl‐methacrylate) > poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) > poly(tert‐butyl methacrylate), and the branching of butylmethacrylate appeared to decrease the miscibility with PS. The interaction energies between PS with various methacrylates obtained from phase boundaries with lattice–fluid theory reached minimum value corresponding to the styrene/n‐propylmethacrylate interaction. They were in the order PnPMA < PEMA < PCHMA < PnBMA < PMMA. The difference in the order of miscibility and interaction energies might be attributed to the terms related to the compressibility. The phase‐separation temperatures calculated with the interaction energies obtained here indicated that the PS/PEMA and PS/PnPMA blends at high molecular weights were miscible, whereas the PS/PnBMA blends were immiscible at high molecular weights.

The miscibility of poly(ε caprolactone) (PCL) with poly(styrene-co-4-hydroxystyrene) (PHS) copolymers was investigated as a function of comonomer composition experimentally and with calculations by two models; the binary interaction model and the association model. PCL was found to be completely miscible with PHS copolymers containing 5 or more mole percent of 4-hydroxystyrene (HS) comonomer units for the entire range of blend compositions. Segmental interaction densities, Bijs, were determined by the analysis of the equilibrium melting point depression and by the application of the binary interaction model. By correlating the segmental interaction energy densities with the binary interaction model, thermodynamic miscibility is for comonomer composition over five mole percent of 4-hydroxystyrene, which is in agreement with the experimental phase behavior. Application of the association model for specific interactions to blends also predicts the experimental miscibility boundary and phase behavior for all the PHS copolymers/PCL blends.

We tested forward recoil spectrometry (FRES) as a method to determine miscibility by measuring coexistence compositions in binary polymer blends. In this study, equilibrium phase compositions were determined for a compositionally symmetric poly(styrene‐ran‐methyl methacrylate) random copolymer (S0.49r‐MMA) and two homopolymers, deuterated polystyrene (dPS) and deuterated poly(methyl methacrylate) (dPMMA). Sample preparation, film dewetting, and beam damage were addressed, and the results for these polymer blends were in good agreement with those obtained through other experimental techniques. Deuteration had a strong effect on the miscibility of the dPS/S0.49r‐MMA and dPMMA/S0.49r‐MMA blends, to the extent that the asymmetric miscibility observed separately for the PS/S0.49r‐MMA and PMMA/S0.49r‐MMA blends was not found. Although this deuteration effect may limit the applicability of FRES for some polymer systems, the accuracy with which phase compositions can be determined with FRES makes it an attractive alternative to other less quantitative methods for investigating blend miscibility.

Blends of two or more ethylene–styrene (ES) copolymers that differed primarily in the comonomer composition of the copolymers were studied. Available thermodynamic models for copolymer–copolymer blends were utilized to determine the criteria for miscibility between two ES copolymers differing in styrene content and also between ES copolymers and the respective homopolymers, polystyrene and linear polyethylene. Model estimations were compared with experimental observations based primarily on melt‐blended ES/ES systems, particularly via the analysis of the glass‐transition (Tg ) behavior from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and solid‐state dynamic mechanical spectroscopy. The critical comonomer difference in the styrene content at which phase separation occurred was estimated to be about 10 wt % for ES copolymers with a molecular weight of about 105 and was in general agreement with the experimental observations. The range of ES copolymers that could be produced by the variation of the comonomer content allowed the study of blends with amorphous and semicrystalline components. Crystallinity differences for the blends, as determined by DSC, appeared to be related to the overlapping of the Tg of the amorphous component with the melting range of the semicrystalline component and/or the reduction in the mobility of the amorphous phase due to the presence of the higher Tg of the amorphous blend component. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Binary blends of poly(2,6–dimethyl–1,4–phenylene oxide) (PPE) with various styrene copolymers were investigated. Poly(styrene–co–acrylonitrile) (SAN), poly[styrene–co–(methyl methacrylate)] (SMMA), poly[styrene–co–(acrylic acid)] (SAA) and poly[styrene–co–(maleic anhydride)] (SMA) are only miscible with PPE when the amount of comonomer is rather small. From calculated binary interaction densities it can be concluded that the strong repulsion between PPE and comonomer limits miscibility. In blends of PPE with SAN, as well as with ABS, the inter-facial tension between the blend components is significantly reduced upon addition of polystyrene–block–poly–(methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers (PS–b–PMMA) and polystyrene–block–poly (ethylene–co–butylene)–block–poly–(methyl methacrylate) triblock copolymers (PS–b–PEB–b–PMMA). They show a profound influence on morphology, phase adhesion and mechanical blend properties.

In this article, the miscibility of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) with poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile) (SAN) containing 25 wt % of acrylonitrile is studied from both a qualitative and a quantitative point of view. The evidences coming from thermal analysis (differential scanning calorimetry) demonstrate that PCL and SAN are miscible in the whole range of composition. The Flory interaction parameter χ1,2 was calculated by the Patterson approximation and the melting point depression of the crystalline phase in the blends; in both cases, negative values of χ1,2 were found, confirming that the system is miscible. The interaction parameter evaluated within the framework of the mean field theory demonstrates that the miscibility of PCL/SAN blends is due to the repulsive interaction between the styrene and acrylonitrile segments in SAN. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigated the chemical fixation of carbon dioxide (CO 2) to a copolymer bearing epoxide and the application of the cyclic carbonate group containing copolymer to polymer blends. In the synthesis of poly[(2‐oxo‐1,3‐dioxolane‐4‐yl)methyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene] [poly(DOMA‐co‐St)] from the addition of CO 2 to poly(glycidyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene) [poly(GMA‐co‐St)], quaternary ammonium salts showed good catalytic activity at mild reaction conditions. The CO 2 addition reaction followed pseudo first‐order kinetics with the concentration of poly(GMA‐co‐St). In order to expand the applications of the CO 2 fixed copolymer, polymer blends of this copolymer with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) were cast from N,N′‐dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. Miscibility of blends of poly(DOMA‐co‐St) with PMMA or PVC have been investigated both by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and visual inspection of the blends, and the blends were miscible over the whole composition ranges. The miscibility behaviors were also discussed in terms of FT‐IR spectra. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
