Adaptive smoothing has been proposed for curve-fitting problems where the underlying function is spatially inhomogeneous. Two Bayesian adaptive smoothing models, Bayesian adaptive smoothing splines on a lattice and Bayesian adaptive P-splines, are studied in this paper. Estimation is fully Bayesian and carried out by efficient Gibbs sampling. Choice of prior is critical in any Bayesian non-parametric regression method. We use objective priors on the first level parameters where feasible, specifically independent Jeffreys priors (right Haar priors) on the implied base linear model and error variance, and we derive sufficient conditions on higher level components to ensure that the posterior is proper. Through simulation, we demonstrate that the common practice of approximating improper priors by proper but diffuse priors may lead to invalid inference, and we show how appropriate choices of proper but only weakly informative priors yields satisfactory inference.  相似文献

Step-stress accelerated degradation test (SSADT) is a useful tool for assessing the lifetime distribution of highly reliable products when the available test items are very few. In this paper, we discuss multiple-steps step-stress accelerated degradation models based on Wiener process, and we apply the objective Bayesian method for such analytically intractable models to obtain the noninformative priors (Jefferys prior and two Reference priors). Moreover, we show that their posterior distributions are proper, and we propose Gibbs sampling algorithms for the Bayesian inference based on the Jefferys prior and two Reference priors. Finally, we present some simulation studies to compare the objective Bayesian estimates with the other Bayesian estimate and the maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs). Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of objective Bayesian analysis method.  相似文献

We apply a Bayesian approach to the problem of prediction in an unbalanced growth curve model using noninformative priors. Due to the complexity of the model, no analytic forms of the predictive densities are available. We propose both approximations and a prediction-oriented Metropolis-Hastings sampling algorithm for two types of prediction, namely the prediction of future observations for a new subject and the prediction of future values for a partially observed subject. They are illustrated and compared through real data and simulation studies. Two of the approximations compare favorably with the approximation in Fearn (1975, Biometrika, 62, 89–100) and are very comparable to the more accurate Rao-Blackwellization from Metropolis-Hastings sampling algorithm.  相似文献

Generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) have been applied widely in the analysis of longitudinal data. This model confers two important advantages, namely, the flexibility to include random effects and the ability to make inference about complex covariances. In practice, however, the inference of variance components can be a difficult task due to the complexity of the model itself and the dimensionality of the covariance matrix of random effects. Here we first discuss for GLMMs the relation between Bayesian posterior estimates and penalized quasi-likelihood (PQL) estimates, based on the generalization of Harville’s result for general linear models. Next, we perform fully Bayesian analyses for the random covariance matrix using three different reference priors, two with Jeffreys’ priors derived from approximate likelihoods and one with the approximate uniform shrinkage prior. Computations are carried out via the combination of asymptotic approximations and Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. Under the criterion of the squared Euclidean norm, we compare the performances of Bayesian estimates of variance components with that of PQL estimates when the responses are non-normal, and with that of the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) estimates when data are assumed normal. Three applications and simulations of binary, normal, and count responses with multiple random effects and of small sample sizes are illustrated. The analyses examine the differences in estimation performance when the covariance structure is complex, and demonstrate the equivalence between PQL and the posterior modes when the former can be derived. The results also show that the Bayesian approach, particularly under the approximate Jeffreys’ priors, outperforms other procedures.  相似文献

Widely used parametric generalized linear models are, unfortunately, a somewhat limited class of specifications. Nonparametric aspects are often introduced to enrich this class, resulting in semiparametric models. Focusing on single or k-sample problems, many classical nonparametric approaches are limited to hypothesis testing. Those that allow estimation are limited to certain functionals of the underlying distributions. Moreover, the associated inference often relies upon asymptotics when nonparametric specifications are often most appealing for smaller sample sizes. Bayesian nonparametric approaches avoid asymptotics but have, to date, been limited in the range of inference. Working with Dirichlet process priors, we overcome the limitations of existing simulation-based model fitting approaches which yield inference that is confined to posterior moments of linear functionals of the population distribution. This article provides a computational approach to obtain the entire posterior distribution for more general functionals. We illustrate with three applications: investigation of extreme value distributions associated with a single population, comparison of medians in a k-sample problem, and comparison of survival times from different populations under fairly heavy censoring.  相似文献

Bayesian l0‐regularized least squares is a variable selection technique for high‐dimensional predictors. The challenge is optimizing a nonconvex objective function via search over model space consisting of all possible predictor combinations. Spike‐and‐slab (aka Bernoulli‐Gaussian) priors are the gold standard for Bayesian variable selection, with a caveat of computational speed and scalability. Single best replacement (SBR) provides a fast scalable alternative. We provide a link between Bayesian regularization and proximal updating, which provides an equivalence between finding a posterior mode and a posterior mean with a different regularization prior. This allows us to use SBR to find the spike‐and‐slab estimator. To illustrate our methodology, we provide simulation evidence and a real data example on the statistical properties and computational efficiency of SBR versus direct posterior sampling using spike‐and‐slab priors. Finally, we conclude with directions for future research.  相似文献

Single-index models have found applications in econometrics and biometrics, where multidimensional regression models are often encountered. This article proposes a nonparametric estimation approach that combines wavelet methods for nonequispaced designs with Bayesian models. We consider a wavelet series expansion of the unknown regression function and set prior distributions for the wavelet coefficients and the other model parameters. To ensure model identifiability, the direction parameter is represented via its polar coordinates. We employ ad hoc hierarchical mixture priors that perform shrinkage on wavelet coefficients and use Markov chain Monte Carlo methods for a posteriori inference. We investigate an independence-type Metropolis-Hastings algorithm to produce samples for the direction parameter. Our method leads to simultaneous estimates of the link function and of the index parameters. We present results on both simulated and real data, where we look at comparisons with other methods.  相似文献

Abstract

Many Bayesian analyses use Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques. MCMC techniques work fastest (per iteration) when the prior distribution of the parameters is chosen conveniently, such as a conjugate prior. However, this is sometimes at odds with the prior desired by the investigator. We describe two motivating examples where nonconjugate priors are preferred. One is a Dirichlet process where it is difficult to implement alternative, nonconjugate priors. We develop a method that allows computation to be done with a convenient prior but adjusts the equilibrium distribution of the Markov chain to be the posterior distribution from the desired prior. In addition to allowing more freedom in choosing prior distributions, the method enables the investigator to perform quick sensitivity analyses, even in nonparametric settings.  相似文献

In this paper, the objective Bayesian method is applied to investigate the competing risks model involving both catastrophic and degradation failures. By modeling soft failure as the Wiener degradation process, and hard failures as a Weibull distribution, we obtain the noninformative priors (Jefferys prior and two reference priors) for the parameters. Moreover, we show that their posterior distributions have good properties and we propose Gibbs sampling algorithms for the Bayesian inference based on the Jefferys prior and two reference priors. Some simulation studies are conducted to illustrate the superiority of objective Bayesian method. Finally, we apply our methods to two real data examples and compare the objective Bayesian estimates with the other estimates.  相似文献

Abstract

We propose a prior probability model in the wavelet coefficient space. The proposed model implements wavelet coefficient thresholding by full posterior inference in a coherent probability model. We introduce a prior probability model with mixture priors for the wavelet coefficients. The prior includes a positive prior probability mass at zero which leads to a posteriori thresholding and generally to a posteriori shrinkage on the coefficients. We discuss an efficient posterior simulation scheme to implement inference in the proposed model. The discussion is focused on the density estimation problem. However, the introduced prior probability model on the wavelet coefficient space and the Markov chain Monte Carlo scheme are general.  相似文献

This paper considers the problem of testing on the common mean of several normal distributions. We propose a solution based on a Bayesian model selection procedure in which no subjective input is considered. We construct the proper priors for testing hypotheses about the common mean based on measures of divergence between competing models. This method is called the divergence-based priors (Bayarri and García-Donato in J R Stat Soc B 70:981–1003, 2008). The behavior of the Bayes factors based DB priors is compared with the fractional Bayes factor in a simulation study and compared with the existing tests in two real examples.  相似文献

In many applications involving spatial point patterns, we find evidence of inhibition or repulsion. The most commonly used class of models for such settings are the Gibbs point processes. A recent alternative, at least to the statistical community, is the determinantal point process. Here, we examine model fitting and inference for both of these classes of processes in a Bayesian framework. While usual MCMC model fitting can be available, the algorithms are complex and are not always well behaved. We propose using approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) for such fitting. This approach becomes attractive because, though likelihoods are very challenging to work with for these processes, generation of realizations given parameter values is relatively straightforward. As a result, the ABC fitting approach is well-suited for these models. In addition, such simulation makes them well-suited for posterior predictive inference as well as for model assessment. We provide details for all of the above along with some simulation investigation and an illustrative analysis of a point pattern of tree data exhibiting repulsion. R code and datasets are included in the supplementary material.  相似文献

For longitudinal data, the modeling of a correlation matrix ?R can be a difficult statistical task due to both the positive definite and the unit diagonal constraints. Because the number of parameters increases quadratically in the dimension, it is often useful to consider a sparse parameterization. We introduce a pair of prior distributions on the set of correlation matrices for longitudinal data through the partial autocorrelations (PACs), which vary independently over (?1,1). The first prior shrinks each of the PACs toward zero with increasingly aggressive shrinkage in lag. The second prior (a selection prior) is a mixture of a zero point mass and a continuous component for each PAC, allowing for a sparse representation. The structure implied under our priors is readily interpretable for time-ordered responses because each zero PAC implies a conditional independence relationship in the distribution of the data. Selection priors on the PACs provide a computationally attractive alternative to selection on the elements of ?R or ?R? 1 for ordered data. These priors allow for data-dependent shrinkage/selection under an intuitive parameterization in an unconstrained setting. The proposed priors are compared to standard methods through a simulation study and illustrated using a multivariate probit data example. Supplemental materials for this article (appendix, data, and R code) are available online.  相似文献

Abstract A fundamental problem of interest to contemporary natural resource scientists is that of assessing whether a critical population parameter such as population proportion p has been maintained above (or below) a specified critical threshold level pc. This problem has been traditionally analyzed using frequentist estimation of parameters with confidence intervals or frequentist hypothesis testing. Bayesian statistical analysis provides an alternative approach that has many advantages. It has a more intuitive interpretation, providing probability assessments of parameters. It provides the Bayesian logic of “if (data), then probability (parameters)” rather than the frequentist logic of “if (parameters), then probability (data).” It provides a sequential, cumulative, scientific approach to analysis, using prior information and reassessing the probability distribution of parameters for adaptive management decision making. It has been integrated with decision theory and provides estimates of risk. Natural resource scientists have the opportunity of using Bayesian statistical analysis to their advantage now that this alternative approach to statistical inference has become practical and accessible.  相似文献

We apply Bayesian approach, through noninformative priors, to analyze a Random Coefficient Regression (RCR) model. The Fisher information matrix, the Jeffreys prior and reference priors are derived for this model. Then, we prove that the corresponding posteriors are proper when the number of full rank design matrices are greater than or equal to twice the number of regression coefficient parameters plus 1 and that the posterior means for all parameters exist if one more additional full rank design matrix is available. A hybrid Markov chain sampling scheme is developed for computing the Bayesian estimators for parameters of interest. A small-scale simulation study is conducted for comparing the performance of different noninformative priors. A real data example is also provided and the data are analyzed by a non-Bayesian method as well as Bayesian methods with noninformative priors.  相似文献

Command and Control is the process by which military personnel in war command their forces to take account of military aims and objectives. Across NATO, there is a growing realisation that the proper representation of Command and Control (C2) in models of conflict is very important. Since it essentially concerns itself with the representation of human decision-making, this is recognised as one of the most difficult areas for defence analysis. One approach to this problem is through the use of large rule-based expert systems. The work reported here lays out an alternative approach founded on the use of Bayesian inference and transitions between different mission ‘states’, leading to what we call the the mission based approach to Command and Control. These ideas are already being incorporated into the next generation of simulation models currently under development which range across the land/air, maritime and peacekeeping areas of application.  相似文献

We consider the problem of robust Bayesian inference on the mean regression function allowing the residual density to change flexibly with predictors. The proposed class of models is based on a Gaussian process (GP) prior for the mean regression function and mixtures of Gaussians for the collection of residual densities indexed by predictors. Initially considering the homoscedastic case, we propose priors for the residual density based on probit stick-breaking mixtures. We provide sufficient conditions to ensure strong posterior consistency in estimating the regression function, generalizing existing theory focused on parametric residual distributions. The homoscedastic priors are generalized to allow residual densities to change nonparametrically with predictors through incorporating GP in the stick-breaking components. This leads to a robust Bayesian regression procedure that automatically down-weights outliers and influential observations in a locally adaptive manner. The methods are illustrated using simulated and real data applications.  相似文献

A stress-strength system fails as soon as the applied stress,X, is at least as much as the strength,Y, of the system. Stress and strength are time-varying in many real-life systems but typical statistical models for stress-strength systems are static. In this article, the stress and strength processes are dynamically modeled as Brownian motions. The resulting stress-strength system is then governed by a time-homogeneous Markov process with an absorption barrier at O. Conjugate as well as non-informative priors are developed for the model parameters and Markov chain sampling methods are used for posterior inference of the reliability of the stress-strength system. A generalization of this model is described next where the different stress-strength systems are assumed to be exchangeable. The proposed Bayesian analyses are illustrated in two examples where we obtain posterior estimates as well as perform model checking by cross-validation.  相似文献

One of the main advantages of Bayesian approaches is that they offer principled methods of inference in models of varying dimensionality and of models of infinite dimensionality. What is less widely appreciated is how the model inference is sensitive to prior distributions and therefore how priors should be set for real problems. In this paper prior sensitivity is considered with respect to the problem of inference in Gaussian mixture models. Two distinct Bayesian approaches have been proposed. The first is to use Bayesian model selection based upon the marginal likelihood; the second is to use an infinite mixture model which ‘side steps’ model selection. Explanations for the prior sensitivity are given in order to give practitioners guidance in setting prior distributions. In particular the use of conditionally conjugate prior distributions instead of purely conjugate prior distributions are advocated as a method for investigating prior sensitivity of the mean and variance individually.  相似文献

In this paper, objective Bayesian method is applied to analyze degradation model based on the inverse Gaussian process. Noninformative priors (Jefferys prior and two reference priors) for model parameters are obtained and their properties are discussed. Moreover, we propose a class of modified reference priors to remedy weaknesses of the usual reference priors and show that the modified reference priors not only have proper posterior distributions but also have probability matching properties for model parameters. Gibbs sampling algorithms for Bayesian inference based on the Jefferys prior and the modified reference priors are studied. Simulations are conducted to compare the objective Bayesian estimates with the maximum likelihood estimates and subjective Bayesian estimates and shows better performance of the objective method than the other two estimates especially for the case of small sample size. Finally, two real data examples are analyzed for illustration.  相似文献
