The interaction of CO with Au atoms adsorbed on terrace and low-coordinates sites (edge and corner) of the MgO(1 0 0) surface was studied using the density functional theory (DFT) in combination with embedded cluster models. Surface anionic (O2−) and neutral oxygen vacancy (Fs) sites were considered. In all the cases, the CO stretching frequencies are shifted with respect to free CO with values between −232 and −358 cm−1. In particular, the values for Au on Fs at edge and corner are shifted to higher stretching frequencies by 100 and 59 cm−1, respectively, with respect to the value on a perfect MgO(1 0 0) surface. This result is in agreement with recent scanning tunneling microscopy and infrared spectroscopy experiments where a corresponding shift of 70 cm−1 was observed by comparing the measurements on perfect and O-deficient MgO(1 0 0) surfaces. However, these results are different than expected because Au atoms on Fs centers are negatively charged and, therefore, according to the generally accepted scheme the CO frequency should be red-shifted with respect to the adsorption on anionic five-coordinated site where the Au atom is essentially neutral. The following picture emerges from the present results: the single occupied HOMO(α) of Au atom on Fs at low-coordinated sites consists in two lobes extended sideward the Au atom. For symmetry reasons, this MO overlaps efficiently with the 2π MO of CO. This bonding contribution to the Au-CO link is counteracted by a Pauli repulsion between the 5σ MO of CO and more internal orbitals (the HOMO-1(α) and the HOMO(β)) centered on Au. In consequence, CO is forced to vibrate against a region with a high electron density. This is the so-called “wall effect” which by itself contributes to higher CO frequency values.  相似文献

F+ laser performance and interaction of the title group IB transition metals at the reduced oxygen coordination of MgO surface were investigated using the TD and DFT methods of ab initio molecular electronic structure calculations. The considered ion clusters were embedded in simulated Coulomb fields that closely approximate the Madelung fields of the host surfaces and the nearest neighbor ions to the F+ site were allowed to relax to equilibrium in each case. The F+ laser performance fades quickly as the reduced oxygen coordination decreases from 5 to 4 to 3. The relaxed excited states (RESs) of the defect containing surfaces are compact and deep below the conduction bands of the perfect MgO surface. The probability of orientational destruction of the center in laser experiment is expected to follow the order flat>corner>edge. The excited state at the edge has higher energy than that at the flat or at the corner. F+ is easily formed at the lower oxygen coordination and the disappearance of anisotropy and 2p splitting observed in absorption of F+ at the surface follow the order corner>flat>edge. The Glasner–Tompkins relation is generalized to include the F+ bands at the reduced oxygen coordination of a metal oxide surface. As far as the adsorbate–substrate interactions are concerned, the F+ center enhances the adsorptivity of Ag, Cu and Au by ca. 1.91–3.33 eV and changes the nature of adsorption from physical adsorption to chemical adsorption. The adsorption energies follow the order Cu>Au>Ag and are explainable in terms of electrostatic potential curves, energy gaps and spin pairing. Cu and Ag act as electron donors while Au acts as electron acceptor and the MgO surface cannot be made semiconducting by F+ imperfection.  相似文献

Both density functional theory calculations and numerous experimental studies demonstrate a variety of unique features in metal supported oxide films and transition metal doped simple oxides, which are markedly different from their unmodified counterparts. This review highlights, from the computational perspective, recent literature on the properties of the above mentioned surfaces and how they adsorb and activate different species, support metal aggregates, and even catalyse reactions. The adsorption of Au atoms and clusters on metal-supported MgO films are reviewed together with the cluster׳s theoretically predicted ability to activate and dissociate O2 at the Au–MgO(100)/Ag(100) interface, as well as the impact of an interface vacancy to the binding of an Au atom. In contrast to a bulk MgO surface, an Au atom binds strongly on a metal-supported ultra-thin MgO film and becomes negatively charged. Similarly, Au clusters bind strongly on a supported MgO(100) film and are negatively charged favouring 2D planar structures. The adsorption of other metal atoms is briefly considered and compared to that of Au. Existing computational literature of adsorption and reactivity of simple molecules including O2, CO, NO2, and H2O on mainly metal-supported MgO(100) films is discussed. Chemical reactions such as CO oxidation and O2 dissociation are discussed on the bare thin MgO film and on selected Au clusters supported on MgO(100)/metal surfaces. The Au atoms at the perimeter of the cluster are responsible for catalytic activity and calculations predict that they facilitate dissociative adsorption of oxygen even at ambient conditions. The interaction of H2O with a flat and stepped Ag-supported MgO film is summarized and compared to bulk MgO. The computational results highlight spontaneous dissociation on MgO steps. Furthermore, the impact of water coverage on adsorption and dissociation is addressed. The modifications, such as oxygen vacancies and dopants, at the oxide–metal interface and their effect on the adsorption characteristics of water and Au are summarized. Finally, more limited computational literature on transition metal (TM) doped CaO(100) and MgO(100) surfaces is presented. Again, Au is used as a probe species. Similar to metal-supported MgO films, Au binds more strongly than on undoped CaO(100) and becomes negatively charged. The discussion focuses on rationalization of Au adsorption with the help of Born–Haber cycle, which reveals that the so-called redox energy including the electron transfer from the dopant to the Au atom together with the simultaneous structural relaxation of lattice atoms is responsible for enhanced binding. In addition, adsorption energy dependence on the position and type of the dopant is summarized.  相似文献

The adsorption of sulfur dioxide molecule (SO2) on Li atom deposited on the surfaces of metal oxide MgO (1 0 0) on both anionic and defect (Fs-center) sites located on various geometrical defects (terrace, edge and corner) has been studied using density functional theory (DFT) in combination with embedded cluster model. The adsorption energy (Eads) of SO2 molecule (S-atom down as well as O-atom down) in different positions on both of O−2 and Fs sites is considered. The spin density (SD) distribution due to the presence of Li atom is discussed. The geometrical optimizations have been done for the additive materials and MgO substrate surfaces (terrace, edge and corner). The oxygen vacancy formation energies have been evaluated for MgO substrate surfaces. The ionization potential (IP) for defect free and defect containing of the MgO surfaces has been calculated. The adsorption properties of SO2 are analyzed in terms of the Eads, the electron donation (basicity), the elongation of S-O bond length and the atomic charges on adsorbed materials. The presence of the Li atom increases the catalytic effect of the anionic O−2 site of MgO substrate surfaces (converted from physisorption to chemisorption). On the other hand, the presence of the Li atom decreases the catalytic effect of the Fs-site of MgO substrate surfaces. Generally, the SO2 molecule is strongly adsorbed (chemisorption) on the MgO substrate surfaces containing Fs-center.  相似文献

The structural and electronic properties of the neutral and positively charged oxygen vacancies (F and F+ centres) in the bulk and on the (001) surfaces of SrTiO3 crystal are examined within the hybrid Hartree-Fock and density functional theory (HF-DFT) method based upon the linear combination of atomic orbital (LCAO) approach. A comparison of the formation energy for surface and bulk defects indicates a perceptible propensity for the segregation of neutral and charged vacancies to both SrO and TiO2 surface terminations with a preference in the latter case which is important for interpretation of space charge effects at ceramic interfaces. It is found that the vacancies reveal more shallow energy levels in the band gap on surfaces rather than in the bulk, in particular, on the TiO2 surface. The charged F+ centre has significantly deeper energy levels both in bulk and on the surfaces, as compared with the neutral F centre.  相似文献

We present density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the formation of nitric oxide dimers (N2O2) on Au atoms, dimers and trimers adsorbed on regular O2 ? sites and neutral oxygen vacancies (Fs sites) of the MgO(100) surface. The study of the N2O2 species is of great interest since it has been detected in the NO reduction reaction as an intermediate towards the formation of N2O. We found that the coupling of a NO molecule with a previously adsorbed one on Au/MgO is energetically favorable on Au1 and Au3, but unfavorable on Au2. The stability of N2O2 is in direct relation with the amount of charge taken from the support. Furthermore, one of the N―O bonds can be activated as a result of the attraction between the negatively charged NO dimer and the ionic oxide surface. In fact, for Au1 anchored on the Fs site a barrierless reaction occurs between N2O2 and a third NO molecule, forming adsorbed N2O and NO2.  相似文献

Low-energy deposition of neutral Pd(N) clusters (N=2-7 and 13) on a MgO(001) surface F center (FC) was studied by spin-density-functional molecular dynamics simulations. The incident clusters are steered by an attractive "funnel" created by the FC, resulting in adsorption of the cluster, with one of its atoms bonded atop of the FC. The deposited Pd2-Pd6 clusters retain their gas-phase structures, while for N>6 surface-commensurate isomers are energetically more favorable. Adsorbed clusters with N>3 are found to remain magnetic at the surface.  相似文献

Equilibrium geometries, charge distributions, stabilities and electronic properties of the Ag-adsorbed (MgO) n (n = 1–8) clusters have been investigated by density functional theory (DFT) with generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for exchange-correlation functional. The results show that hollow site is energetically preferred for n⩾4, and the incoming Ag atoms tend to cluster on the existing Ag cluster. The Mulliken populations indicate that the interaction between the Ag atom and Magnesia clusters is mainly induced by a weak atomic polarization. The adsorbed Ag atom only causes charge redistributions of the atoms near itself. The effect of the adsorbed Ag atom on the bonding natures and structural features of Magnesia clusters is minor. Furthermore, the investigations on the first energy difference, fragmentation energies and electron affinities show that the Ag(MgO)4 and Ag(MgO)6 are the most stable among studied clusters. We give the first photoemission results on the enhancement of Si reactivity to oxygen when a noble metal (Ag) is present. The tunability of synchrotron radiation (SR) has been used to get high surface sensitivity and to take advantage of cross section energy dependence. We show that when one monolayer of Ag is deposited onto Si(111), the exposure to oxygen (30 × 106L) originates the overgrowth of an oxide phase which is basically SiO2. This indicates that Ag breaks the sp3 configuration of Si atoms with a consequent dramatic increase in the Si reactivity. This behaviour rules out the model of Ag adsorbed on top of Si with an atomically abrupt interface.  相似文献

The optical properties of thin dielectric films with metal inclusions and their dependence on thermal and laser annealing are studied experimentally. Metal clusters (Ag, Au, and Cu) in dielectric materials (Al2O3 and SiO2) are obtained by simultaneous vacuum deposition of metal and dielectric on the surface of a corresponding dielectric substrate (sapphire and quartz). It is shown that, depending on the deposited dielectric material, on the weight ratio of deposited metal and dielectric, and on the subsequent thermal treatment, one can obtain different metal structures, from clusters with a small number of atoms to complex dendritic plasmonic structures.  相似文献

In order to understand the difference in metallic film growth modes on perfect and defective oxide substrates, we have combined ab initio B3LYP periodic calculations on the slab models of the corresponding Me/MgO(0 0 1) interfaces (Me = Ag, Cu) with thermodynamic theory of solid solutions. For a defectless magnesia surface, we confirm the experimentally observed submonolayer growth of 3D metallic islands (Ag possesses a higher trend than Cu). Formation of Fs centers (neutral O vacancies) on the substrate markedly enhances metal atom adsorption as compared to physisorption over regular sites on a defect-free substrate. For the first time, we predict that the presence of these surface defects (beginning with concentrations of 5% for Cu and 22% for Ag) can stimulate the growth of uniform 2D metallic sublayers.  相似文献

Fast neutral atoms and molecules with energies from 0.4 up to 3 keV are scattered under a grazing angle of incidence from a clean and flat MgO(001) surface. For “axial surface channeling” conditions, we observe defined diffraction patterns in the angular intensity distributions for scattered 3He and 4He atoms as well as H2 molecules. The diffraction patterns are analyzed in terms of semiclassical trajectory calculations making use of projectile surface interaction potentials derived from density functional theory and from pair potentials calculated from Hartree–Fock wave functions. From comparison of measured and calculated diffraction patterns we deduced the rumpling of the topmost surface layer of MgO(001), i.e. an inward shift of Mg2+ ions with respect to O2? ions, of (0.03±0.03) Å.  相似文献

The electronic and geometrical structures of neutral and charged YOn (n=2–12) clusters have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) with generalized gradient approximation. The oxygen atom in YOn has been found to be in oxo, peroxo and in superoxo forms. The geometrical structures and topologies of small size anionic clusters resemble that of neutral clusters. Yttrium showed higher coordination number than scandium. Computed results reveal the existence of YO10 cluster to have a penta-peroxo oxygen with a homoleptic Y(η2 –O2)5 geometrical configuration. The HOMO–LUMO gaps decrease with increasing n due to the increase in 2p orbital population of oxygen atoms. It has been shown that in these clusters bonding are predominantly ionic in nature and anions are thermodynamically more stable, due to the charge delocalization between the metal atom and oxygen ligands. YO10+ and YO12+ were found to be highly exothermic to release one and two oxygen molecules, while YO11+ dissociates though the ozonide dissociation channel. Computed absorption spectra of small clusters are mainly contributed by yttrium metal d and s valence orbitals. The absorbance spectra, shifts towards lower energy with cluster size increase, while charge has no substantial effect on the absorption spectrum.  相似文献

Palladium clusters deposited on TiO2 supports constitute important oxidation catalysts. Addition of O2 in presence of deposited palladium clusters results in dissociated O atoms whose binding strength controls the activity of a catalytic oxidation reaction. Here we demonstrate how the presence of even remote Pd sites can more than double the energy required to remove surface O atoms from a surface. This unusual increase in binding is shown to originate in a Coulomb interaction between Pdδ+ and Oδ? where the otherwise semiconducting support remains almost neutral acting to mediate a charge transfer from Pd to O sites. The O atoms supported on lattice Ti sites are further shown to form composite TiO motifs that can exchange sites with Pd atoms with a minimal energy, opening the pathway to Ti migration. This behavior is proposed to be linked to their identical valence pool containing d-states.  相似文献

The copper deposition on single crystal ZnO(101̄0) and MgO(001) surfaces has been studied by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in UHV at room temperature. The initial deposited Cu (well below one monolayer) induces a loss peak at about 2 eV on both oxide surfaces and at 4.3 eV on the MgO(001) surface. Based upon heat treatment and oxidation experiments the 2 eV structure is assigned to the electronic resonance of Cu(I) from the Cu deposit on the oxide matrix substrates. On the basis of the experiments the colour-center-related loss peaks, at 2.6 eV for MgO(001) and at 1.9 eV for ZnO(101̄0), are believed to be due to electronic resonance of a Vs center, and the metal ion vacancies are suggested to be active centers which interact with the submonolayer copper deposits. Finally, the electronic energy loss spectra from the Cu-covered oxide surfaces are discussed in the framework of electronic band structures.  相似文献

Residual chlorines, which originate from HAuCl4, enhance the aggregation of gold (Au) nanoparticles and clusters, preventing the generation of highly active supported Au catalysts. However, the detailed mechanism of residual-chlorine-promoted aggregation of Au is unknown. Herein to investigate this mechanism, density functional theory (DFT) calculations of Au and Cl adsorption onto a reduced rutile TiO2 (110) surface were performed using a generalised gradient approximation Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof formula (GGA–PBE) functional and plane-wave basis. Although both Au and Cl atoms prefer to mono-absorb onto oxygen defect sites, Cl atoms have a stronger absorption onto a reduced TiO2 (110) surface, abbreviated as rTiO2 (110) in the following, than Au atoms. Additionally, co-adsorption of a Cl atom and a Au atom or Au nanorod onto a rTiO2 surface was investigated; Cl adsorption onto an oxygen defect site weakens the interaction between a Au atom or Au nanorod and rTiO2 (110) surface. The calculation results suggest that the depletion of interaction between Au and rTiO2 surface is due to strong interaction between Cl atoms at oxygen defect sites and neighbouring bridging oxygen (OB) atoms.  相似文献

The adsorption of Cl2 Na monolayers supported on the MgO(001) surface has been studied by the density functional method using cluster models embedded in a large array of point charges (PCs). The value of PCs was determined by charge self-consistent technique. The results indicate that Na-promoted MgO(001) surface is an efficient catalyst toward Cl2 adsorptive decomposition. Besides, it was found that the role of the MgO(001) surface is not passive, which is different from CO adsorption on MgO(001) surface supported Na metal monolayers. The analysis of band and projected density of states indicates that the electron transfer from the surface Mg 3s valence orbital and Na 3s valence orbital to the anti-bonding σ orbital of Cl2 is the source of the Cl2 bond weakening. This is also different from the CO adsorption on MgO(001) surface supported Na metal monolayers, where only the electrons from the Na valence orbital are transferred to the anti-bonding π orbital of adsorbed CO. Our study suggests that the essence of catalysis is different for CO and Cl2 adsorption on Na metal monolayers supported an MgO(001) surface.  相似文献

We present a model of a new paramagnetic defect center which results from the interaction of atomic hydrogen with the MgO(1 0 0) surface. DFT calculations have been performed using periodic supercells and embedded cluster models where long-range polarization effects are included explicitly. The H atom promotes the creation of an oxygen vacancy (F center) by formation of the FS+(OH) defect where an hydroxyl group is adsorbed near an electron trapped in an oxygen vacancy. This new center has some characteristics similar to those of the classical FS+ centers but a smaller formation energy; furthermore, being globally neutral, it can be treated also with supercell methods.  相似文献
