The ground and excited state proton transfer reactions of a new orthohydroxy Schiff base, salicylidine-3,4,7-methyl amine (SMA) has been studied by means of absorption, emission and time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy in some polar protic and aprotic solvents at room temperature and 77K. The spectral behavior of SMA has been investigated both in neutral and basic conditions. The intramolecularly hydrogen bonded enol and zwitterion have been detected in pure methanol and ethanol, the anion is detected in basic condition. At 77K, SMA shows phosphorescence in pure methanol and ethanol. From nanosecond measurements and quantum yields of fluorescence, we have estimated the decay rates of proton transfer reaction in methanol and ethanol.  相似文献

Ground and excited state inter- and intramolecular proton transfer reactions of a new o-hydroxy Schiff base, 7-ethylsalicylidenebenzylamine (ESBA) have been investigated by means of absorption, emission and nanosecond spectroscopy in different protic solvents at room temperature and 77 K. The excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) is evidenced by a large Stokes shifted emission (approximately 11000 cm(-1)) at a selected excited energy in alcoholic solvents. Spectral characteristics obtained reveal that ESBA exists in more than one structural form in most of the protic solvents, both in the ground and excited states. From the nanosecond measurements and quantum yield of fluorescence we have estimated the decay rate constants, which are mainly represented by nonradiative decay rates. At 77 K the fluorescence spectra are found to be contaminated with phosphorescence spectra in glycerol and ethylene glycol. It is shown that the fluorescence intensity and nature of the species present are dependent upon the excitation energy.  相似文献

The proton transfer reaction and the spectroscopic properties of di-(2-hydroxy-3-formyl-5-tert butyl phenyl) methane (HFPM) have been examined in different nonpolar and polar solvents at room temperature and 77 K, by means of absorption, emission and time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. In the ground state, the primary closed form has been identified in all the nonpolar and polar solvents and the anion is detected only in presence of base in some of the polar solvents. After photoexcitation, the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) is indicated by a large Stokes shifted emission (approximately 10,600 cm-1) in all the nonpolar and polar solvents used, except in water and ethylene glycol (EG). The ESIPT band is likely to be originated from the enol tautomer of the HFPM. Two types of anion and H-bonded complex have been detected in the excited state. In water and EG, only anion and H-bonded complex have been detected in the excited state. At 77 K, HFPM shows phosphorescence in pure ethanol, and in n-hexane in presence of triethylamine. It has been suggested that the appearance of phosphorescence is due to the rotation of the formyl group. The measured nonradiative decay rates have always been found to dominate in the decay processes of the excited state of HFPM. Some semiempirical calculations have been undertaken to rationalize the experimental findings.  相似文献

Two new orthohydroxy Schiff bases, 7-phenylsalicylidene benzylamine (PSBA) and 7-ethylsalicylideneaniline (ESA) have been synthesized. The excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and the structure of PSBA and ESA in its crystalline form and in the solvents n-hexane, n-heptane and 1,4-dioxane have been investigated by means of absorption, emission and nanosecond spectroscopy at room temperature and 77K. One ground state species has been detected both in neutral and basic solutions of both PSBA and ESA: the cis-enol form with an intramolecular hydrogen bond. The ESIPT and formation of keto tautomer are evidenced by a large Stokes shifted emission (approximately 12000 cm(-1)) at room temperature only in the case of ESA. On the other hand the keto tautomer is the predominant species at 77K in a solid matrix and as a solid sample at room temperature both in the case of ESA and PSBA. In the case of both ESA and PSBA the more intense, higher energy emission is due to the species which has not undergone ESIPT and attributed mainly due to cis-enol form. The trans-enol form is also observed by changing the excitation wavelength. Both the compounds are found to undergo a structural change to a zwitterionic and intermolecular hydrogen bonded form in the presence of a strong base like triethylamine. From the nanosecond measurements and quantum yield of fluorescence we have estimated the decay rates of proton transfer reaction in the case of PSBA. Our theoretical calculation at the AM1 level of approximation shows that the ground singlet state has a rather large activation barrier both in the case of PSBA and ESA. The barrier height is much lower on the corresponding excited singlet surface only in the case of ESA. The process is predicted to be endothermic in the ground state and exotherrmic in the excited singlet state.  相似文献

One new orthohydroxy Schiff base, 2-(N-benzyl-alpha-iminoethyl)naphthol (BEIN) has been synthesized. The proton transfer reaction of BEIN has been investigated by means of absorption, steady state and time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy in different solvents at room temperature and 77K. The behavior of BEIN in ethanol and water, has been studied in neutral, acidic and basic conditions. Excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) is evidenced by a large Stokes shifted ( approximately 11,000 cm-1) fluorescence in solid crystalline media at room temperature. We present the observation of phosphorescence both in non-polar and protic solvents at 77K. The observed decay dynamics of the phosphorescence and delayed fluorescence indicates that the triplet state can be attributed to the cis-keto form. The molecular structures are determined by B3LYP/6-31G** calculation. From theoretical study it is suggested that the strengthening of hydrogen bond result from the steric repulsion of the phenyl ring. The presence of benzene ring increases the proton transfer barrier in case of BEIN compared to previously studied 7-ethylsalicylidenebenzylamine (ESBA).  相似文献

The absorption and fluorescence emission of pyridoxamine were studied as function of pH and solvent properties. In the ground state, pyridoxamine exhibits different protonated forms in the range of pH 1.5–12. Fluorescence studies showed that the same species exist at the lowest singlet excited state but at different pH ranges. The phenol group is by ca. 8 units more acidic in the excited state than in the ground state. On the other hand, the pyridine N‐atom is slightly more basic in the lowest excited state than in the ground state. Excitation spectra and emission decays in the pH range of 8–10 indicate the protonation of the pyridine N‐atom by proton transfer from the amine group, in the ground and singlet excited states. Spectroscopic studies in different solvents showed that pyridoxamine in the ground or excited states exhibits intramolecular proton transfer from the pyridine N‐atom to the phenol group, which is more favorable in solvents of low hydrogen‐bonding capacity. The cationic form with the protonated phenolic group, which emits at shorter wavelength, is the dominant species in nonprotic solvents, but, in strong proton‐donor solvents, both forms exist. The fluorescence spectra of these species exhibit blue shift in protic solvents. These shifts are well‐correlated with the polarity and the H‐donor ability of the solvent.  相似文献

Emission and absorption spectra of aniline have been studied in different solvents at 300 K and 77 K. This molecule exhibits broad and structureless fluorescence and poorly resolved phosphorescence in glassy polar ethanol and non-polar methylcyclohexane and n-hexane matrices at 77 K. Unlike the behaviour in a polar medium, fluorescence is found to be more intense than phosphorescence in non-polar media. In contrast to the case of glassy matrices, aniline shows highly stuctured emission and excitation spectra in crystalline cyclohexane and benzene matrices at 77 K. Excited state dipole moment calculation shows that both the singlet states contain charge transfer character, which is responsible for the strong phosphorescence in polar glassy medium. Spectral analysis indicates that the aniline molecule is slightly distorted in both the singlet and triplet states. The marked reduction in phosphorescence intensity of this molecule observed in non-polar matrices, particularly in a benzene crystalline matrix, relative to that in an ethanol matrix, is attributable to the decreased intersystem crossing rate and increased non-radiative rate from the emitting triplet state.  相似文献

Photoinduced intramolecular direct arylation allows structurally unique compounds containing phenanthro[9′,10′:4,5]imidazo[1,2‐f]phenanthridine and imidazo[1,2‐f]phenanthridine skeletons, which mediate excited‐state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), to be efficiently synthesized. The developed polycyclic aromatics demonstrate that the combination of five‐membered ring structures with a rigid arrangement between a proton donor and a proton acceptor provides a means for attaining large fluorescence quantum yields, exceeding 0.5, even in protic solvents. Steady‐state and time‐resolved UV/Vis spectroscopy reveals that, upon photoexcitation, the prepared protic heteroaromatics undergo ESIPT, converting them efficiently into their excited‐state keto tautomers, which have lifetimes ranging from about 5 to 10 ns. The rigidity of their structures, which suppresses nonradiative decay pathways, is believed to be the underlying reason for the nanosecond lifetimes of these singlet excited states and the observed high fluorescence quantum yields. Hydrogen bonding with protic solvents does not interfere with the excited‐state dynamics and, as a result, there is no difference between the occurrences of ESIPT processes in MeOH versus cyclohexane. Acidic media has a more dramatic effect on suppressing ESIPT by protonating the proton acceptor. As a result, in the presence of an acid, a larger proportion of the fluorescence of ESIPT‐capable compounds originates from their enol excited states.  相似文献

Preferential solvation of a solvatochromic probe has been studied in binary mixtures comprising of a non-protic and a protic solvent. The non-protic solvents employed are carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)), acetonitrile (AcN) and N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) and the protic solvents are methanol (MeOH) and ethanol (EtOH). The probe molecule exhibits different spectroscopic characteristics depending upon the properties of the solubilizing media. The observed spectral features provide an indication of the microenvironment immediately surrounding the probe. Solvatochromic shifts of the ground and excited states of the probe were analysed by monitoring the charge transfer absorption band and the fluorescence emission spectra in terms of the solute-solvent and solvent-solvent interactions. Fluorescence emission spectra show the dual emission due to excited state proton transfer nature of the probe molecule. The effect of solvent and the excitation energy on dual emission are also studied. The observed magnitude of the Stokes shift in the above solvents has been used to deduce experimentally the dipole moment ratio of the probe molecule for the excited state to the ground state. The dipole moment of excited state is higher than the ground state.  相似文献

A new orthohydroxy Schiff base, 7-ethylsalicylidenebenzylamine (ESBA) has been synthesised. The excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) processes have been investigated by means of absorption, emission and nanosecond spectroscopy at room temperature and at 77 K in non polar solvents. The ESIPT is evidenced by a large Stokes shifted emission (11 000 cm−1) only at 77 K. From fluorescence and excitation spectra it is suggested that at least three different species are present in the excited state at room temperature. Our theoretical calculation at AM1 level confirm the cis-isomer to be the only viable form in the ground state.  相似文献

Photophysics of 1,8-naphthalimide (NAPMD) in different solvents has been delineated in this paper. Theoretically calculated bond distance of N–H and C=O groups rule out any intramolecular proton transfer in the excited state. Concomitant increase in negative charge on O atom compared to N atom and dipole moment hints at possible intramolecular charge transfer. Progressive redshift with polarity of solvents in emission and absorption spectra also confirms the theoretical prediction. Weakening of N–H bond helps hydrogen abstraction and anion formation in water with decay time of 2.54 ns through intermolecular proton transfer. This was corroborated from the ground state photoexcitation of laboratory synthesized anion of NAPMD. Amide hydrolysis in higher pH and excess proton availability at low pH are responsible for anion emission quenching. A possible electron transfer diminishes phosphorescence at 77 K with changing pH.  相似文献

We have studied the solvent effect on structures and potential energy surfaces along proton transfer in the ground and the excited states of 7-hydroxyquinoline interacting with an ethanol dimer using ab initio calculations. The proton transfer is forbidden in the ground state not only in vacuum but also in solvents of n-heptane, ethanol, and dimethyl sulfoxide. In the excited state, although the proton transfer is forbidden in vacuum, it is possible in solvent due to its greatly reduced barrier (~10 kcal mol(-1)) and highly stabilized product. It has also been found from the calculations that the proton-transfer barrier in the excited state decreases as the dielectric constant of a solvent increases. Our calculations are consistent with experimental results that the proton transfer does not take place in the ground state and that the excited-state proton-transfer rate increases as the solvent polarity increases. Our calculated absorption and emission properties are in excellent agreement with experimental results. Projection factors (reflecting geometrical change from the ground state to the excited state) and reorganization energies for several low frequency vibrations in connection with the excited-state proton transfer are discussed as well.  相似文献

Absorption and emission characteristics ofo-, m- andp-tolunitriles in polar and non-polar solvents under different conditions have been investigated in detail. Solvatochromic shifts of band origin of these molecules in non-polar solvents show that their dipolemoments in the first excited singlet state are almost the same while its value in the second excited singlet is larger in the metathan in the para-isomer. Vibronic analyses of the low temperatures absorption, fluorescence and phosphorescence spectra of all the three molecules have provided evidence that these molecules are slightly distorted in the first excited singlet state while such distortion in the phosphorescence emitting triplet state is larger. The data on fluorescence and phosphorescence quantum yield and phosphorescence lifetime of the tolunitriles are reasonably interpreted as showing that in these molecules, particularly m-andp- tolunitriles, the internal conversion rate from the first excited singlet to the ground state is probably small and that the charge transfer character of the triplet state in thep-isomer is larger than that in the meta.  相似文献

Depending on the polarity and protic abilities of the solvent, 2-(2′-pyridyl)pyrrole can exist in either syn or anti rotameric forms. In nonpolar solvents, intramolecular excited state single proton transfer is observed, manifested by the appearance of low-energy tautomeric emission. The solvent-assisted excited state double proton transfer reaction is also detected. DFT calculations confirm low barriers for both single and double proton transfer processes in the lowest excited singlet state and show different character of the tautomerization in both cases: in the intramolecular reaction, mutual approach of two nitrogen atoms plays an important role.  相似文献

The electronic absorption spectrum in the vapour state and in solution in different solvents in the region 3000–1900 Å and the fluorescence and phosphorescence emission spectra in ethanol or cyclohexane at 77 K have been studied for 2-fluoropyridine and analysed. Two systems of absorption band corresponding to the π→π* transition II and π→π* transition III have been observed and the excited state dipole moments have been determined from the solvent-induced shifts of the electronic absorption bands. The half-life of phosphorescence in cyclohexane at 77 K is found to be 3.5 s.  相似文献

Diflavonol is a molecule that can exist in neutral or anionic form and in several tautomeric forms in ground and excited states. Absorption and emission spectroscopy combined with theoretical calculations have shown that only one tautomer of neutral diflavonol exists in the ground state, but two exist in the excited state. In the latter case, one is the tautomer originating from the ground state tautomer, which exists in strongly protic solvents, the other is the phototautomer occurring in weakly protic or aprotic solvents as a result of the intramolecular transfer of one proton. The OH groups present in diflavonol and involved in weak intramolecular hydrogen bonds exhibit a proton-donating ability reflected by the experimental values of acidity constants or theoretical enthalpies and free energies of proton detachment. The electronically excited molecule is a relatively strong acid when it loses one proton. With increasing basicity of the medium, monoanionic and dianionic forms occur which exhibit spectral characteristics and an emission ability different from those of neutral diflavonol. These interesting features of diflavonol open up possibilities for the analytical use of the compound and its application as a spectral probe sensitive to the properties of liquid phases.  相似文献

The dynamics of the excited states of 1‐aminofluoren‐9‐one (1AF) and 1‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)‐fluoren‐9‐one (1DMAF) are investigated by using steady‐state absorption and fluorescence as well as subpicosecond time‐resolved absorption spectroscopic techniques. Following photoexcitation of 1AF, which exists in the intramolecular hydrogen‐bonded form in aprotic solvents, the excited‐state intramolecular proton‐transfer reaction is the only relaxation process observed in the excited singlet (S1) state. However, in protic solvents, the intramolecular hydrogen bond is disrupted in the excited state and an intermolecular hydrogen bond is formed with the solvent leading to reorganization of the hydrogen‐bond network structure of the solvent. The latter takes place in the timescale of the process of solvation dynamics. In the case of 1DMAF, the main relaxation pathway for the locally excited singlet, S1(LE), or S1(ICT) state is the configurational relaxation, via nearly barrierless twisting of the dimethylamino group to form the twisted intramolecular charge‐transfer, S1(TICT), state. A crossing between the excited‐state and ground‐state potential energy curves is responsible for the fast, radiationless deactivation and nonemissive character of the S1(TICT) state in polar solvents, both aprotic and protic. However, in viscous but strong hydrogen‐bond‐donating solvents, such as ethylene glycol and glycerol, crossing between the potential energy surfaces for the ground electronic state and the hydrogen‐bonded complex formed between the S1(TICT) state and the solvent is possibly avoided and the hydrogen‐bonded complex is weakly emissive.  相似文献

The intramolecular proton-transfer process, rotational process, and optical properties of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (HOXD) and its O/"NH"- and O/"S"-substituted derivatives, 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-triazole (HOT) and 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole (HOTD), respectively, have been studied. DFT (B3LYP/6-31+G**) single-point energy calculations were performed using HF- and DFT-optimized geometries in the ground state (S0). TD-B3LYP/6-31+G** calculations using CIS-optimized geometries were carried out to investigate the properties of the first singlet excited state (S1) and first triplet excited state (T1). The computational results revealed that a high-energy barrier inhibits the proton transfer from cis-enol (Ec) to keto (K) form in S0, whereas the proton transfer in S1 can take place through a very-low-energy barrier. The rotation between Ec and trans-enol (Et) can occur in S0 through a low-energy barrier, whereas it is prohibited because of the high-energy barrier in S1 for each of the three molecules. The vertical excitation energies were calculated using the TD-B3LYP/6-31+G** method based on the HF- and CIS-optimized geometries. Absorption and fluorescence wavelengths of HOT show a hypsochromic shift (6-15 nm) relative to HOXD, while those of HOTD show a bathochromic shift (21-29 nm). The phosphorescence wavelength of HOTD shows a significant bathochromic shift relative to that of HOXD.  相似文献

The effects of 4-cyano and 3-cyano substituents on the spectroscopic properties and photoacidity of 3- and 4-hydroxystilbene have been investigated. In nonpolar solvents, the 3-hydroxycyanostilbenes have much longer singlet lifetimes and larger fluorescence quantum yields than do the 4-hydroxycyanostilbenes. The longer lifetimes of 3-hydroxystilbene and its cyano derivatives are attributed to a "meta effect" on the stilbene torsional barrier, similar to that previously observed for the aminostilbenes. The cyano substituent causes a marked increase in both ground state and excited-state acidity of the hydroxystilbenes in aqueous solution. The dynamics of excited-state proton transfer in methanol-water solution have been investigated by means of femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. Assignment of the transient absorption spectra is facilitated by comparison to the spectra of the corresponding potassium salts of the conjugate bases and the methyl ethers, which do not undergo excited-state proton transfer. The 4-cyanohydroxystilbenes undergo excited-state proton transfer with rate constants of 5 x 10(11) s(-1). These rate constants are comparable to the fastest that have been reported to date for a hydroxyaromatic photoacid and approach the theoretical limit for water-mediated proton transfer. The isotope effect for proton transfer in deuterated methanol-water is 1.3 +/- 0.2, similar to the isotope effect for the dielectric response of water. The barrier for excited state double bond torsion of the conjugate bases is small for 4-cyano-4-hydroxystilbene but large for 4-cyano-3-hydroxystilbene. Thus the "meta effect" is observed for the singlet states of both the neutral and conjugate base.  相似文献

The u.v. absorption and fluorescence spectra of 2,6-pyridinediamine and its carboxylate salts were measured in various solvents [isooctane (2,2,4-trimethylpentane), methylcyclohexane and isopentane mixed solvent, ethanol and isooctane mixed solvent, and pH adjusted solvent] at room temperature and 77 K. These spectral data were interpreted by the molecular orbital method. From these results it was found that the formation of 6-amino-2(1H)-pyridinimine through the 2,6-pyridinediamine hydrogen bonded complex with ethanol occurs only in the π,π* excited singlet state in the ethanol and isooctane mixed solvent. On the other hand, the fluorescence spectrum of 2,6-pyridinediamine in the pH > 13 controlled solution was assigned to the monoanion species, that is, the 6-amino-2-pyridylamide ion which was formed in the first π,π* excited singlet state.  相似文献
