A regular perturbation analysis is presented for three laminar natural convection flows in micropolar fluids in liquids with temperature dependent viscosity: a freely-rising plane plume, the flow above a horizontal line source on an adiabatic surface (a plane wall plume) and the flow adjacent to a vertical uniform flux surface. While these flows have well-known power-low similarity solutions when the fluid viscosity is taken to be constant, they are non-similar when the viscosity is considered to a function of temperature. A single similar flow, that adjacent to a vertical isothermal surface, is also analysed for comparison in order to estimate the extent of validity of perturbation analysis. The formulation used here provides a unified treatment of variable viscosity effects on those four flows. Computed first-order perturbation quantities are presented for all four flows. Numerical results for velocity, angular velocity and thermal functions has been shown graphically or tabulated for different values of micropolar parameters. Received on 20 October 1997  相似文献

A regular perturbation analysis is presented for the following laminar natural convection flows of Newtonian fluids with temperature-dependent effective viscosity: a freely-rising plane plume, the flow above a horizontal line source on an adiabatic surface (a plane wall plume) and the flow adjacent to a vertical uniform flux surface for porous medium. The temperature-dependent effective viscosity introduces nonsimilarity into the governing equations. Numerical results are presented for the flow and heat transfer characteristics.

The instability mechanism of single and multilayer flow of Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids down an inclined plane has been examined based on a rigorous energy analysis as well as careful examination of the eigenfunctions. These analyses demonstrate that the free surface instability in single and multilayer flows in the limit of longwave disturbances (i.e., the most dangerous disturbances) arise due to the perturbation shear stresses at the free surface. Specifically, for viscoelastic flows, the elastic forces are destabilizing and the main driving force for the instability is the coupling between the base flow and the perturbation velocity and stresses and their gradient at the free surface. For Newtonian flows at finite Re, the driving force for the interfacial instability in the limit of longwaves depends on the placement of the less viscous fluid. If the less viscous fluid is adjacent to the solid surface then the main driving force for the instability is interfacial friction, otherwise the bulk contribution of Reynolds stresses drives the instability. For viscoelastic fluids in the limit of vanishingly small Re, the driving force for the instability is the coupling of the base flow and perturbation velocity and stresses and their gradients across the interface. In the limit of shortwaves the interfacial stability mechanism of flow down inclined plane is the same as plane Poiseuille flows (Ganpule and Khomami 1998, 1999a, b). A liquid layer containing a single solute is bounded on the outside by a rigid spherical surface and on the inside by a concentric gas/liquid interface. The solute evaporates from the liquid to the gas phase and, if the surface tension depends on the solute concentration, surface-tension driven convective flows may arise (Marangoni instability). Assuming zero-gravity conditions and using a normal-mode approach, we study the linear stability of the time-dependent, spherically-symmetric concentration profiles in a motionless liquid. Numerical results are presented for Marangoni numbers and perturbation wave numbers in the case of neutral stability. It turns out that the system's stability properties are strongly dependent on the curvature of the interface and on the mass-transfer Biot number.

The problem of mixed convection about non-isothermal vertical surfaces in a saturated porous medium is analysed using boundary layer approximations. The analysis is made assuming that the surface temperature varies as an arbitrary function of the distance from the origin. A perturbation technique has been applied to obtain the solutions. Using the differentials of the wall temperature, which are functions of distance along the surface, as perturbation elements, universal functions are derived for various values of the governing parameter Gr/Re. Both aiding and opposing flows are considered. The universal functions obtained can be used to estimate the heat transfer and fluid velocity inside the boundary layer for any type of wall temperature variation. As a demonstration of the method, heat transfer results have been presented for the case of the wall temperature varying as a power function of the distance from the origin. The results have been studied for various combinations of the parameters Gr/Re and the power index m, taking both aiding and opposing flows into consideration. On comparing these results with those obtained by a similarity analysis, the agreement is found to be good.

Steady free surface flows are of interest in the fields of marine and hydraulic engineering. Fitting methods are generally used to represent the free surface position with a deforming grid. Existing fitting methods tend to use time-stepping schemes, which is inefficient for steady flows. There also exists a steady iterative method, but that one needs to be implemented with a dedicated solver. Therefore a new method is proposed to efficiently simulate two-dimensional (2D) steady free surface flows, suitable for use in conjunction with black-box flow solvers. The free surface position is calculated with a quasi-Newton method, where the approximate Jacobian is constructed in a novel way by combining data from past iterations with an analytical model based on a perturbation analysis of a potential flow. The method is tested on two 2D cases: the flow over a bottom topography and the flow over a hydrofoil. For all simulations the new method converges exponentially and in few iterations. Furthermore, convergence is independent of the free surface mesh size for all tests.

The Lighthill transpiration-velocity correction is commonly used in the analysis of viscous flows of aeronautical interest, in order to take into account the perturbation to the potential flow caused by the presence of the vorticity in the boundary layer. This correction consists of considering the boundary as a permeable surface from which the fluid flows through the boundary surface, with a velocity (named the transpiration velocity) determined on the basis of the local boundary-layer characteristics. Here, we use a new potential-vorticity decomposition in order to derive an exact representation of the effects of the vorticity on the external flow. The relationship between approximate transpiration-velocity representation and the exact one presented here is analyzed: it is shown that, under typical boundary-layer assumptions, the new representation reduces to that by Lighthill, except for a corrective field term. Finally, in order to quantify, in a simple case, the contribution of the corrective terms which arise in the new formulation, we examine, as a numerical test case, the problem of an attached boundary-layer flow over a flat plate: the numerical results indicate that the corrective term is negligible for Reynolds numbers above 104.A preliminary version of this paper was presented at VI Convegno Italiano di Meccanica Computazionale, Brescia, Italy, October 1991.

A model of the nonlinear interaction between a pressure perturbation traveling at a constant velocity and an incompressible boundary layer is constructed when its near-wall part is described by the “inviscid boundary layer” equations. A steady-state solution is managed to obtain in the finite form under the assumption that it exists in a moving coordinate system. It is shown that the boundary layer can easily overcome pressure perturbations whose amplitude is not higher than the dynamic pressure calculated from the velocity of the pressure perturbation. At the higher pressure perturbation amplitudes a vortex sheet sheds from the body surface to the boundary layer. The vortex sheet represents an unstable surface of the tangential discontinuity which separates the regions of the direct and reverse separation flows. In the case of an arbitrary shape of the pressure perturbation the surface of the tangential discontinuity sheds from the body surface at a finite angle with the formation of a stagnation point. An example of the pressure perturbation in which the vortex sheet sheds from the body surface along the tangent is constructed.

A non‐conforming, discontinuous Galerkin finite element–boundary element coupling procedure is presented for the exterior planar Stokes problem. The novel coupled formulation is developed using that for the conforming case as a guide to the introduction of extra mortar variables used to couple a discontinuous interior finite element solution with a continuous exterior boundary element solution. Convergence results for the new scheme are presented, for a range of different interior penalties, on computational domains discretized with regular structured meshes. To illustrate an application, the excitations required to model two‐phase droplet deformations in an extensional flow, under simple surface tension, with the new scheme are also presented. For a selection of different drop viscocities and exterior flows, with and without a rotational component, the progression to a steady‐state deformation of initially undeformed circular drops is calculated and the results compared with those from both a conforming FEM‐BEM equivalent scheme and from a small perturbation analysis where available. Electro-hydrodynamic (EHD) flows are investigated theoretically and numerically in this paper and results are presented for the flow field in model electrostatic precipitators (EPs). The resulting flow fields are shown in various representations and explained qualitatively. Numerical calculations with different flow models (non-turbulent and RANS) were conducted to investigate the influence of the flow model on the resulting secondary flows. Furthermore, a perturbation analysis is presented, leading to a simple differential equation of the Helmholtz type. This allows a more detailed view of the important mechanisms forming the secondary flows as well as being able to obtain a very fast estimation of the resulting flow field. The calculations reveal a strong influence of a vortex formation at the beginning of the precipitation zone on the whole flow field. Furthermore, a strong effect of the boundary conditions of the electric field and the operating parameters is shown. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

A mathematical model is presented for surfactant-driven thin weakly viscoelastic film flows on a flat, impermeable plane. The Oldroyd-B constitutive relation is used to model the viscoelastic fluid. Lubrication theory and a perturbation expansion in powers of the Weissenberg number (We) are employed, which give rise to non-linear coupled evolution equations governing the transport of insoluble surfactant and thin liquid film thickness. Spreading on a Newtonian film is recovered to leading order and corrections to viscoelasticity are obtained at order We. These equations are solved numerically over a wide range of viscosity ratio (ratio of solvent viscosity to the sum of solvent and polymeric viscosities), pre-existing surfactant level and Peclet number (Pe). The effect of viscoelasticity on surfactant transport and fluid flow is investigated and the mechanisms underlying this effect are explored. Shear stress, streamwise normal stress and the temporal rate of change of extra shear stress generated from gradients in surfactant concentration dominate thin viscoelastic film flows whereas only shear stresses play a role in Newtonian thin film flows. Our results also reveal that, for weak viscoelasticity, the influence of viscosity ratio on the evolution of surfactant concentration and film thickness can be significant and varies considerably, depending on the concentration of pre-existing surfactant and surfactant surface diffusivity.

A technique combining the features of parameter differentiation and finite differences is presented to compute the flow of viscoelastic fluids. Two flow problems are considered: (i) three-dimensional flow near a stagnation point and (ii) axisymmetric flow due to stretching of a sheet. Both flows are characterized by a boundary value problem in which the order of the differential equation exceeds the number of boundary conditions. The exact numerical solutions are obtained using the technique described in the paper. Also, the first-order perturbation solutions (in terms of the viscoelastic fluid parameter) are derived. A comparison of the results shows that the perturbation method is inadequate in predicting some of the vital characteristic features of the flows, which can possibly be revealed only by the exact numerical solution.

Acoustically excited air-assisted liquid sheets
The effect of acoustic excitation on the disintegration characteristics of air-assisted liquid sheets, which utilize water at ambient temperature, and for velocities up to 1.8 m/s, is investigated. The study using high-speed imaging techniques revealed that optimum frequency modulation of the perturbation generator has a pronounced influence on the associated surface waves and the subsequent breakup of the liquid sheet. The analysis includes characterization of critical wave amplitude, breakup length, and breakup frequency, for Weber numbers in the range 0.30<Weabs<0.44, which are compared with flow features in the absence of acoustic excitation. The results show that acoustic perturbation can effectively suppress the dominance of gravitational and surface tension effects. As a consequence, for low Weber number flows, the interfacial waves exhibit regularity, and thus a better control of primary breakup processes of liquid sheet may be accomplished.

The secondary flow field in the pulsating flow of a constitutively non-linear fluid, whose structure is defined by a series of nested integrals over semi-infinite time domains, in straight tubes of arbitrary cross-sections is investigated. The transversal field arises at the second order of the perturbation of the non-linear constitutive structure, and is driven by first-order terms which define the linearly viscoelastic longitudinal flow in the hierarchy of superposed linear flows stemming from the perturbation of the constitutive structure. The unconventional conduit contours are obtained through a novel approach to the concept of domain perturbation. Time-averaged, mean secondary flow streamline patterns are presented for triangular, square and hexagonal pipes.

We consider a thin film of a power-law liquid flowing down an inclined wall with sinusoidal topography. Based on the von Kármán–Pohlhausen method an integral boundary-layer model for the film thickness and the flow rate is derived. This allows us to study the influence of the non-Newtonian properties on the steady free surface deformation. For weakly undulated walls we solve the governing equation analytically by a perturbation approach and find a resonant interaction of the free surface with the wavy bottom. Furthermore, the analytical approximation is validated by numerical simulations. Increasing the steepness of the wall reveals that nonlinear effects like the resonance of higher harmonics grow in importance. We find that shear-thickening flows lead to a decrease while shear thinning flows lead to an amplification of the steady free surface. A linear stability analysis of the steady state shows that the bottom undulation has in most cases a stabilizing influence on the free surface. Shear thickening fluids enhance this effect. The open questions which occurred in the linear analysis are then clarified by a nonlinear stability analysis. Finally, we show the important role of capillarity and discuss its influence on the steady solution and on the stability.

The process of hydrodynamic coating based on the foil bearing method in which the liquid coated on the foil is located in a narrow gap between a fixed surface and the traveling foil is considered. The variability of the foil (substrate) leaving angle and other factors initiate perturbations of the output fluid flow rate and the coating thickness inhomogeneity. A closed system of equations is obtained and steady-state and time-dependent flows are calculated numerically. The perturbation suppression by means of an additional device, namely, a freely rotating plate on the rear edge of the fixed surface, is qualitatively analyzed.

Numerical simulations of the process of multiple shock–flame interactions
Based on a weighted essentially nonoscillatory scheme, the multiple interactions of a flame interface with an incident shock wave and its reshock waves are numerically simulated by solving the compressible reactive Navier–Stokes equations with a single-step Arrhenius chemical reaction. The two-dimensional sinusoidally perturbed premixed flames with different initial perturbed amplitudes are used to investigate the effect of the initial perturbation on the flame evolutions. The results show that the development of the flame interface is directly affected by the initial perturbed amplitudes before the passages of reshock waves, and the perturbation development is mainly controlled by the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability(RMI). After the successive impacts of multiple reshock waves, the chemical reaction accelerates the consumption of reactants and leads to a gradual disappearance of the initial perturbed information. The perturbation developments in frozen flows with the same initial interface as those in reactive flows are also demonstrated.Comparisons of results between the reactive and frozen flows show that a chemical reaction changes the perturbation pattern of the flame interface by decreasing the density gradient, thereby weakening the baroclinic torque in the flame mixing region, and therefore plays a dominant role after the passage of reshock waves.

A numerical method for solving three‐dimensional free surface flows is presented. The technique is an extension of the GENSMAC code for calculating free surface flows in two dimensions. As in GENSMAC, the full Navier–Stokes equations are solved by a finite difference method; the fluid surface is represented by a piecewise linear surface composed of quadrilaterals and triangles containing marker particles on their vertices; the stress conditions on the free surface are accurately imposed; the conjugate gradient method is employed for solving the discrete Poisson equation arising from a velocity update; and an automatic time step routine is used for calculating the time step at every cycle. A program implementing these features has been interfaced with a solid modelling routine defining the flow domain. A user‐friendly input data file is employed to allow almost any arbitrary three‐dimensional shape to be described. The visualization of the results is performed using computer graphic structures such as phong shade, flat and parallel surfaces. Results demonstrating the applicability of this new technique for solving complex free surface flows, such as cavity filling and jet buckling, are presented. A method for simulating two‐phase flows including surface tension is presented. The approach is based upon smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). The fully Lagrangian nature of SPH maintains sharp fluid–fluid interfaces without employing high‐order advection schemes or explicit interface reconstruction. Several possible implementations of surface tension force are suggested and compared. The numerical stability of the method is investigated and optimal choices for numerical parameters are identified. Comparisons with a grid‐based volume of fluid method for two‐dimensional flows are excellent. The methods presented here apply to problems involving interfaces of arbitrary shape undergoing fragmentation and coalescence within a two‐phase system and readily extend to three‐dimensional problems. Boundary conditions at a solid surface, high viscosity and density ratios, and the simulation of free‐surface flows are not addressed.
