The structure and conformation of three self-assembled supramolecular species, a rectangle, a square, and a three-dimensional cage, on Au111 surfaces were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. These supramolecular assemblies adsorb on Au111 surfaces and self-organize to form highly ordered adlayers with distinct conformations that are consistent with their chemical structures. The faces of the supramolecular rectangle and square lie flat on the surface, preserving their rectangle and square conformations, respectively. The three-dimensional cage also forms well-ordered adlayers on the gold surface, forming regular molecular rows of assemblies. When the rectangle and cage were mixed together, the assemblies separated into individual domains, and no mixed adlayers were observed. These results provide direct evidence of the noncrystalline solid-state structures of these assemblies and information about how they self-organize on Au111 surfaces, which is of importance in the potential manufacturing of functional nanostructures and devices.  相似文献

Supramolecular chemistry is the chemistry of the intermolecular bond, covering the structures and functions of the entities formed by association of two or more chemical species. Molecular recognition in the supermolecules formed by receptor-substrate binding rests on the principles of molecular complementarity, as found in spherical and tetrahedral recognition, linear recognition by co-receptors, metallo-receptors, amphilic receptors and anion coordination. Supramolecular catalysis by receptors bearing reactive groups effects bond cleavage reactions as well as synthetic bond formation via co-catalysis. Lipophilic receptor molecules act as selective carriers for various substrates and allow the setting up of coupled transport processes linked to electron and proton gradients or to light. Whereas endo-receptors bind substrates in molecular cavities by convergent interactions, exo-receptors rely on interactions between the surfaces of the receptor and the substrate; thus new types of receptors such as the metallonucleates may be designed. In combination with polymolecular assemblies, receptors, carriers and catalysts may lead to molecular and supramolecular devices, defined as structurally organized and functionally integrated chemical systems built on supramolecular architectures. Their recognition, transfer and transformation features are analyzed specifically from the point of view of molecular devices that would operate via photons, electrons or ions, thus defining the fields of molecular photonics, electronics and ionics. Introduction of photosensitive groups yields photoactive receptors for the design of light conversion and charge separation centres. Redox active polyolefinic chains represent molecular wires for electron transfer through membranes. Tubular mesophases formed by stacking of suitable macrocyclic receptors may lead to ion channels. Molecular self-assembling occurs with acyclic ligands that form complexes with a double helical structure. Such developments in molecular and supramolecular design and engineering open perspectives towards the realization of molecular photonic, electronic and ionic devices, that would perform highly selective recognition, reaction and transfer operations for signal and information processing at the molecular level.  相似文献

The self-organization of supramolecular structures, in particular gold-containing hydrogen-bonded rosettes, on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surfaces was investigated by tapping-mode atomic force microscopy (TM-AFM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). TM-AFM and high-resolution STM results show that these hydrogen-bonded assemblies self-organize to form highly ordered domains on HOPG surfaces. We find that a subtle change in one of the building blocks induces two different orientations of the assembly with respect to the surface. These results provide information on the control over the construction of supramolecular nanoarchitectures in 2D with the potential for the manufacturing of functional materials based on structural manipulation of molecular components.  相似文献

Macroscopic supramolecular assembly (MSA) is a new concept in supramolecular science with a focus on interfacial assembly of macroscopic building blocks, which has largely extended the applicable materials of supramolecular assembly and provided new solutions to fabricating tissue scaffolds, soft devices, etc. The precision of the assembled structures is of great interest; unlike molecular assemblies, MSA precision is highly dependent on the matching degree of assembled surfaces because of the large interactive area and group number, which result in remarkably increased kinetic possibilities and metastable assemblies. This Concept introduces the principle, history, and development of MSA, elaborates the low-precision challenge in MSA, summarizes the strategies for precise MSA based on the different thermodynamic stability of precise/imprecise structures and control over assembly kinetics, and finally demonstrates the applications of precise MSA structures in advanced manufacture such as tissue scaffolds.  相似文献

Macroscopic supramolecular assembly bridges fundamental research on molecular recognition and the potential applications as bulk supramolecular materials. However, challenges remain to realize stable precise assembly, which is significant for further functions. To handle this issue, the Marangoni effect is applied to achieve spontaneous locomotion of macroscopic building blocks to reach interactive distance, thus contributing to formation of ordered structures. By increasing the density of the building blocks, the driving force for assembly transforms from a hydrophobic–hydrophobic interaction to hydrophilic–hydrophilic interaction, which is favorable for introducing hydrophilic coatings with supramolecular interactive groups on matched surfaces, consequently realizing the fabrication of stable precise macroscopic supramolecular assemblies.  相似文献

Porphyrins are promising components to be used in molecular electronics due to their rich electronic/photonic properties. Preparation of supramolecular architectures of porphyrins on solid surfaces would constitute a basis for further development toward molecular circuitry or other constructs for molecular electronics applications. Assemblies on surfaces can be probed with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at submolecular resolutions to reveal the arrangements and conformations of molecules on an individual molecule basis. The electronic characteristics within a single porphyrin molecule can also be probed by means of the same technique. This review summarizes the status quo of STM studies on porphyrins on surfaces with regard to their assemblies, structures, and electronic properties at the single molecule level.  相似文献

Remote chiral communication in 2D supramolecular assembly at a liquid/solid interface was investigated at the molecular level. The stereochemical information in a chiral coadsorber was transmitted over a flexible spacer with a length of up to five methylene groups to a 2D supramolecular assembly of achiral building blocks with the cooperation of specific hydrogen bonding between the chiral coadsorber and achiral building blocks and the confinement effect during 2D crystallization. When the position of the stereogenic center was changed with respect to the stereocontrolling moiety, an odd–even effect was found. A stereogenic center closer to the stereocontrolling moiety transmitted the stereochemical information to the 2D supramolecular assembly more reliably. This result is beneficial not only for mechanistic understanding of chiral communication in 2D supramolecular assembly on surfaces but also for the rational design of homochiral supramolecular assemblies on surfaces.  相似文献

Supramolecular assemblies have been very successful in regulating the photothermal conversion efficiency of organic photothermal materials in a simple and flexible way, compared with conventional molecular synthesis. In these assemblies, it is the inherent physiochemical mechanism that determines the photothermal conversion, rather than the assembly strategy. This Minireview summarizes supramolecular photothermal effects, which refer to the unique features of supramolecular chemistry for regulating the photothermal conversion efficiency. Emphasis is placed on the mechanisms of how self‐assembly affects the photothermal performance. The supramolecular photothermal effects on various types of light‐harvesting species are discussed in detail. The timely interpretation of supramolecular photothermal effects is promising for the future design of the photothermal materials with high efficiency, precision, and multiple functionalities for a wide array of applications.  相似文献

A light induced strategy for the design of β‐cyclodextrin (CD) based supramolecular devices is introduced, presenting a novel tool to fabricate multifunctional biointerfaces. Precision photolithography of a modified β‐CD was established on a light sensitive tetrazole surface immobilized on a bioinspired polydopamine (PDA) anchor layer via various shadow masks, as well as via direct laser writing (DLW), in order to craft any desired printboard design. Interfacial molecular recognition provided by light generated cavitate domains was demonstrated via spatially resolved encoding, erasing, and recoding of distinct supramolecular guest patterns. Thus, the light directed shaping of receptor monolayers introduces a powerful path to control supramolecular assemblies on various surfaces.  相似文献

Inspired by sophisticated biological structures and their physiological processes, supramolecular chemistry has been developed for understanding and mimicking the behaviors of natural species. Through spontaneous self-assembly of functional building blocks,we are able to control the structures and regulate the functions of resulting supramolecular assemblies.Up to now, numerous functional supramolecular assemblies have been constructed and successfully employed as molecular devices, machines and biological diagnostic platforms. This review will focus on molecular structures of functional molecular building blocks and their assembled superstructures for biological detection and delivery.  相似文献

Hybrid supramolecular architectures have been fabricated with acceptor 1,4-bis(4-pyridylethynyl)-2,3-bis-dodecyloxy-benzene (PBP) and donor 2,6-bis(3,4,5-tris-dodecyloxy-phenyl)dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene (DTT) compounds on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surfaces, and their structures and molecular conductance are characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). Stable, one-component adlayers of PBP and DTT are also investigated. The coadsorption of two-component mixtures of PBP and DTT results in a variety of hybrid nanopattern architectures that differ from those of their respective one-component surface assemblies. Adjusting the acceptor/donor molar ratio in mixed adlayer assemblies results in dramatic changes in the structure of the hybrid nanopatterns. STS measurements indicate that the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of PBP and DTT on an HOPG surface are relatively insensitive to changes in the hybrid supramolecular architectures. These results provide important insight into the design and fabrication of two-dimensional hybrid supramolecular architectures.  相似文献

Hydrogen bonds with high selectivity and directionality are significant in harnessing molecules to form 2D supramolecular nanostructures. The competition and reorganization of hydrogen bond partners determine the ultimate molecular assembly and pattern in a 2D supramolecular system. In this study, multicomponent assemblies of a monodendron (5-benzyloxy-isophthalic acid derivative, BIC) and pyridylethynyl derivatives [1,4-bis(4-pyridylethynyl)-2,3-bis-dodecyloxy-benzene (PBPC12) and 1,4-bis(4-pyridylethynyl)-2,3-bis-octadecyloxy-benzene (PBPC18)] have been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) on a graphite surface. BIC molecules are able to associate with PBPC12 and PBPC18 molecules to induce the rearrangement of hydrogen bond partners and form coassembly structures. Interestingly, BIC acts as a template molecule in the coassembly process, and these multicomponent structures exhibit similar structural features to the assembly structures of BIC itself. The structural details of the coassembled structures are revealed by high-resolution STM images, and their relationship with the original BIC assemblies is discussed. These results provide important insights into the design and fabrication of hydrogen-bond-directed multicomponent molecular nanostructures on solid surfaces.  相似文献

Synthetic chemists have provided a wide array of supramolecular assemblies able to encapsulate guest molecules. The scope of this tutorial review focuses on supramolecular host molecules capable of reversibly encapsulating polyatomic guests. Much work has been done to determine the mechanism of guest encapsulation and guest release. This review covers common methods of monitoring and characterizing guest exchange such as NMR, UV-VIS, mass spectrometry, electrochemistry, and calorimetry and also presents representative examples of guest exchange mechanisms. The guest exchange mechanisms of hemicarcerands, cucurbiturils, hydrogen-bonded assemblies, and metal-ligand assemblies are discussed. Special attention is given to systems which exhibit constrictive binding, a motif common in supramolecular guest exchange systems.  相似文献

The field of supramolecular assemblies has developed rapidly in the last few decades, thanks in a large part to their diverse applications. These assemblies have been mostly based on Werner-type coordination motifs in which metal centres are coordinated by nitrogen or oxygen donors. Recently, N-heterocyclic carbene(NHC) ligands have been employed as carbon donors not only because of their appealing structures but also due to the extensive applications in catalysis, biomedicine and material science of the resulting assemblies. During the last decade, NHC-based supramolecular assemblies have witnessed rapid growth and extensive application in molecular recognition, luminescent materials and catalysis. For different topological systems, a diverse selection of poly-NHC precursors and synthetic strategies is crucial to precisely control the synthesis of supramolecular architectures. Several synthetic strategies have been developed to synthesise two-dimensional(2D) molecular metallacycles and three-dimensional(3D) metallacages from a wide range of poly-NHC precursors, including a straightforward one-pot strategy, supramolecular transmetalation, stepwise synthesis, an improved one-pot strategy involving self-sorting behaviour of 3D metallacages and a subtle variation strategy of poly-NHC ligand precursors. This review offers a summary of the synthetic strategies applied for the construction of different poly-NHC-based supramolecular assemblies, particularly emphasizes recent progress in the synthesis of large and complex supramolecular assemblies from poly-NHC precursors, and further attention is given to their application in postsynthetic modifications(PSMs), host-guest chemistry, luminescent properties and biomedical applications.  相似文献

Steroidal bile acids and their derivatives exhibit characteristic inclusion behaviors in the crystalline state. Their crystals present varied assemblies due to asymmetric molecular structures, which relate to supramolecular properties through cooperative weak interactions. An overview indicates that the steroidal assemblies lie in an intermediate position among various molecules and have hierarchical structures such as primary, secondary, tertiary, and host-guest assemblies like proteins. Such an interpretation brought about the idea that the assemblies with dimensionality present supramolecular chirality such as three-axial, tilt, helical, bundle, and complementary chirality. This concept of the supramolecular chirality enables us to understand formation of chiral crystals starting from the molecular chirality of the steroidal molecules.  相似文献

Cryptands, carcerands, polyoxometalates, and molecular capsules are cagelike hosts that complex guests through encapsulation. Following the discovery of a nanometer scale supramolecular shell-like spheroid, these and other shell-like hosts were structurally classified. Their frameworks may be catalogued according to principles of solid geometry. This has led to the identification of hosts that have not yet been synthesized or discovered (such as the cuboctahedron shown; X=O, S) and should lead to the design of additional container assemblies.  相似文献
