The loudness of auditory (A), tactile (T), and auditory-tactile (A+T) stimuli was measured at supra-threshold levels. Auditory stimuli were pure tones presented binaurally through headphones; tactile stimuli were sinusoids delivered through a single-channel vibrator to the left middle fingertip. All stimuli were presented together with a broadband auditory noise. The A and T stimuli were presented at levels that were matched in loudness to that of the 200-Hz auditory tone at 25 dB sensation level. The 200-Hz auditory tone was then matched in loudness to various combinations of auditory and tactile stimuli (A+T), and purely auditory stimuli (A+A). The results indicate that the matched intensity of the 200-Hz auditory tone is less when the A+T and A+A stimuli are close together in frequency than when they are separated by an octave or more. This suggests that A+T integration may operate in a manner similar to that found in auditory critical band studies, further supporting a strong frequency relationship between the auditory and somatosensory systems.  相似文献

Phenomena resembling tinnitus and Zwicker phantom tone are seen to result from an auditory gain adaptation mechanism that attempts to make full use of a fixed-capacity channel. In the case of tinnitus, the gain adaptation enhances internal noise of a frequency band otherwise silent due to damage. This generates a percept of a phantom sound as a consequence of hearing loss. In the case of Zwicker tone, a frequency band is temporarily silent during the presentation of a notched broadband sound, resulting in a percept of a tone at the notched frequency. The model suggests a link between tinnitus and the Zwicker tone percept, in that it predicts different results for normal and tinnitus subjects due to a loss of instantaneous nonlinear compression. Listening experiments on 44 subjects show that tinnitus subjects (11 of 44) are significantly more likely to hear the Zwicker tone. This psychoacoustic experiment establishes the first empirical link between the Zwicker tone percept and tinnitus. Together with the modeling results, this supports the hypothesis that the phantom percept is a consequence of a central adaptation mechanism confronted with a degraded sensory apparatus.  相似文献

Computational algorithms that mimic the response of the basilar membrane must be capable of reproducing a range of complex features that are characteristic of the animal observations. These include complex input output functions that are nonlinear near the site's best frequency, but linear elsewhere. This nonlinearity is critical when using the output of the algorithm as the input to models of inner hair cell function and subsequent auditory-nerve models of low- and high-spontaneous rate fibers. We present an algorithm that uses two processing units operating in parallel: one linear and the other compressively nonlinear. The output from the algorithm is the sum of the outputs of the linear and nonlinear processing units. Input to the algorithm is stapes motion and output represents basilar membrane motion. The algorithm is evaluated against published chinchilla and guinea pig observations of basilar membrane and Reissner's membrane motion made using laser velocimetry. The algorithm simulates both quantitatively and qualitatively, differences in input/output functions among three different sites along the cochlear partition. It also simulates quantitatively and qualitatively a range of phenomena including isovelocity functions, phase response, two-tone suppression, impulse response, and distortion products. The algorithm is potentially suitable for development as a bank of filters, for use in more comprehensive models of the peripheral auditory system.  相似文献

Frequency specificity of chirp-evoked auditory brainstem responses   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
This study examines the usefulness of the upward chirp stimulus developed by Dau et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 107, 1530-1540 (2000)] for retrieving frequency-specific information. The chirp was designed to produce simultaneous displacement maxima along the cochlear partition by compensating for frequency-dependent traveling-time differences. In the first experiment, auditory brainstem responses (ABR) elicited by the click and the broadband chirp were obtained in the presence of high-pass masking noise, with cutoff frequencies of 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 kHz. Results revealed a larger wave-V amplitude for chirp than for click stimulation in all masking conditions. Wave-V amplitude for the chirp increased continuously with increasing high-pass cutoff frequency while it remains nearly constant for the click for cutoff frequencies greater than 1 kHz. The same two stimuli were tested in the presence of a notched-noise masker with one-octave wide spectral notches corresponding to the cutoff frequencies used in the first experiment. The recordings were compared with derived responses, calculated offline, from the high-pass masking conditions. No significant difference in response amplitude between click and chirp stimulation was found for the notched-noise responses as well as for the derived responses. In the second experiment, responses were obtained using narrow-band stimuli. A low-frequency chirp and a 250-Hz tone pulse with comparable duration and magnitude spectrum were used as stimuli. The narrow-band chirp elicited a larger response amplitude than the tone pulse at low and medium stimulation levels. Overall, the results of the present study further demonstrate the importance of considering peripheral processing for the formation of ABR. The chirp might be of particular interest for assessing low-frequency information.

The purpose of this study was to compare the role of frequency selectivity in measures of auditory and vibrotactile temporal resolution. In the first experiment, temporal modulation transfer functions for a sinusoidally amplitude modulated (SAM) 250-Hz carrier revealed auditory modulation thresholds significantly lower than corresponding vibrotactile modulation thresholds at SAM frequencies greater than or equal to 100 Hz. In the second experiment, auditory and vibrotactile gap detection thresholds were measured by presenting silent gaps bounded by markers of the same or different frequency. The marker frequency F1 = 250 Hz preceded the silent gap and marker frequencies after the silent gap included F2 = 250, 255, 263, 310, and 325 Hz. Auditory gap detection thresholds were lower than corresponding vibrotactile thresholds for F2 markers less than or equal to 263 Hz, but were greater than the corresponding vibrotactile gap detection thresholds for F2 markers greater than or equal to 310 Hz. When the auditory gap detection thresholds were transformed into filter attenuation values, the results were modeled well by a constant-percentage (10%) bandwidth filter centered on F1. The vibrotactile gap detection thresholds, however, were independent of marker frequency separation. In a third experiment, auditory and vibrotactile rate difference limens (RDLs) were measured for a 250-Hz carrier at SAM rates less than or equal to 100 Hz. Auditory RDLs were lower than corresponding vibrotactile RDLs for standard rates greater than 10 Hz. Combination tones may have confounded auditory performance for standard rates of 80 and 100 Hz. The results from these experiments revealed that frequency selectivity influences auditory measures of temporal resolution, but there was no evidence of frequency selectivity affecting vibrotactile temporal resolution.  相似文献

The dependence of binaural loudness summation on interaural phase of tones ranging between 250 and 1400 Hz was investigated in a series of experiments using a loudness-matching procedure. Observers matched loudness of monaural-binaural and binaural-binaural pairs of alternating tones by adjusting the amplitude of one of the two. Adjustable and reference components of each tone pair were equal in frequency and were varied independently in interaural phase angle through the range +/- 177 degrees. For each tone frequency, steps in loudness summation of approximately 3 dB were obtained in the vicinity of a constant value of phase angle, theta t, which depends on the Hornbostel-Wertheimer constant (tau H) according to the relations theta t = 2 pi f tau H for tones of low frequency (f less than or equal to 1/2 tau H), and theta t = 2 pi(1 - f tau H) for tones of higher frequency (1/2 tau H less than or equal to f less than or equal to 1/tau H). Spatial relationships among alternating tones observed in the above conditions covaried with relative loudness in a complex manner, but exhibited qualitative changes in the vicinity of theta t.  相似文献

The paper reports on the ability of people to rapidly adapt in localizing virtual sound sources in both azimuth and elevation when listening to sounds synthesized using non-individualized head-related transfer functions (HRTFs). Participants were placed within an audio-kinesthetic Virtual Auditory Environment (VAE) platform that allows association of the physical position of a virtual sound source with an alternate set of acoustic spectral cues through the use of a tracked physical ball manipulated by the subject. This set-up offers a natural perception-action coupling, which is not limited to the visual field of view. The experiment consisted of three sessions: an initial localization test to evaluate participants' performance, an adaptation session, and a subsequent localization test. A reference control group was included using individual measured HRTFs. Results show significant improvement in localization performance. Relative to the control group, participants using non-individual HRTFs reduced localization errors in elevation by 10° with three sessions of 12 min. No significant improvement was found for azimuthal errors or for single session adaptation.  相似文献

Two-tone-suppression (2TS) effects and cubic-difference-tone (CDT) levels were measured using a forward-masking procedure, before and after exposure to an intense tonal stimulus. Changes in 2TS effects were consistent with a change in the nonlinearity, such that the system became more linear, in addition to changes due to attenuation of the primary stimuli F1 and F2. Changes in CDT levels could be accounted for on the basis of a temporary threshold shift at F1 and F2. These results indicate at least a partial dissociation of the mechanisms underlying 2TS and CDT generation.  相似文献
