The role of stochastic resonance (SR) in the detection of signals is discussed. It is shown that when a signal is not detectable using traditional methods, such as spectral analysis or averaging, it cannot be detected using SR. In other words by adding noise a far-from detectable signal cannot become detectable.  相似文献

This paper has originated from our interest in approaching mathematical concepts starting from people's common-sense intuitions and building up from there. This goal is challenging both in designing the didactical transposition and sequencing of the mathematical subject matter, and in adopting the open and interactive teaching approach needed to achieve students' active participation and reflection. To demonstrate these challenges, and our experience of trying to cope with them, we have chosen the concept of ‘inverses’ as used in group theory, and its common-sense precursor ‘opposites’. We present our approach via a series of workshop iterations, which summarizes our experience in the many actual workshops we ran in Israel and in Denmark.  相似文献

This study surveys claims in research articles regarding linguistic properties of mathematical texts, focusing on claims supported by empirical or logical arguments. It also performs a linguistic analysis to determine whether some of these claims are valid for school textbooks in mathematics and history. The result of the survey shows many and varying claims that mainly describe mathematical texts as highly compact, precise, complex, and containing technical vocabulary. However, very few studies present empirical support for their claims, and the few empirical studies that do exist contradict the most common, and unsupported, claims, since no empirical study has shown mathematical texts to be more complex than texts from other subjects, and any significant differences rather indicate the opposite. The linguistic analysis in this study is in line with previous empirical studies and stands in contrast to the more common opinion in the unsupported claims. For example, the mathematics textbooks have significantly shorter sentences than the history textbooks.  相似文献

Smooth surfaces have finitely generated canonical rings and projective canonical models. For normal surfaces, however, the graded ring of multicanonical sections is possibly nonnoetherian, such that the corresponding homogeneous spectrum is noncompact. I construct a canonical compactification by adding finitely many non-ℚ-Gorenstein points at infinity, provided that each Weil divisor is numerically equivalent to a ℚ-Cartier divisor. In this paper we show that the Rees algebra can be made into a functor on modules over a ring in a way that extends its classical definition for ideals. The Rees algebra of a module may be computed in terms of a ``maximal' map from to a free module as the image of the map induced by on symmetric algebras. We show that the analytic spread and reductions of can be determined from any embedding of into a free module, and in characteristic 0--but not in positive characteristic!--the Rees algebra itself can be computed from any such embedding.

The Danish mortgage market is large and sophisticated. However, most Danish mortgage banks advise private home-owners based on simple, if sensible, rules of thumb. In recent years a number of papers (from Nielsen and Poulsen in J Econ Dyn Control 28:1267–1289, 2004 over Rasmussen and Zenios in J Risk 10:1–18, 2007 to Pedersen et al. in Ann Oper Res, 2013) have suggested a model-based, stochastic programming approach to mortgage choice. This paper gives an empirical comparison of performance over the period 2000–2010 of the rules of thumb to the model-based strategies. While the rules of thumb slightly outperform a passive benchmark on average and are less risky than pure adjustable rate loans, we find considerable gains from using the model-based strategies. Using a strategy that minimizes conditional-value-at-risk lowers average effective yearly interest rate over a 10-year horizon by 0.3–0.9 %-points (depending on the borrower’s level of conservatism) compared to the rules of thumb without increasing the risk. In this paper, we examine the large body of existing research on outsourcing, and assess the status of research on outsourcing the maintenance of medical devices. Because so little research in this area currently exists, the study was broadened to include other fields that outsource maintenance services, and considers possible applications to the field of medical device maintenance. In all, this paper examines 55 articles spanning various dimensions, including: mathematical models, empirical studies, and conceptual papers. We conclude that research into the outsourcing of medical device maintenance services in hospitals is still in its infancy stages, and that further progress in this field would benefit from additional empirical study grounded in management theory.  相似文献

This paper builds on the author's earlier work on the history of operational research by presenting an analysis of the development of the discipline in Iron and Steel, an industry long regarded as one of the outstanding pioneers in the application of management science to decision-making processes. The contribution of Sir Charles Goodeve and BISRA to the diffusion and practice of operational research is well-documented. Less well known is the reaction to operational research within the managerial hierarchies of the private sector iron and steel companies. In the light of the development of dedicated operational research groups by the leading companies after 1950, it might be assumed that the industry was highly receptive to the discipline in terms of its perceived benefits. The present paper questions this assumption by highlighting the problems encountered by operational researchers in two of the largest Iron and Steel Companies which gave every appearance of being at the forefront of the practice of management science in British industry. Where appropriate, the paper draws contrasts and comparisons with the development of operational research within the nationalised Coal Industry.  相似文献

In this paper, details of student difficulties in understanding the concept of acceleration and the mathematical and physical/intuitive sources of these are delineated by utilizing the teaching experiment methodology. As a result of the study, two anchoring analogies are proposed that can be used as a diagnostic tool for students’ alternative conceptions. These can be used in teaching to highlight the peculiarity of acceleration concept. This study portrays how seeing acceleration as ‘rate of change’ of a quantity (velocity) and recognizing the consequences of such a definition are hindered in certain ways which in turn negatively affect learning the concept of force. This is also an example that illustrates that a rather “simple” mathematical concept (i.e., rate of change) for the expert can become a complex phenomenon when embedded in a physical concept (i.e., acceleration) which is consistently found to be as a misconception among learners at various levels that is widely occurring and very resistant to change.  相似文献

Given an admissible measure μ on where is an open set, we define a realization of the Laplacian in with general Robin boundary conditions and we show that generates a holomorphic C 0 -semigroup on which is sandwiched by the Dirichlet Laplacian and the Neumann Laplacian semigroups. Moreover, under a locality and a regularity assumption, the generator of each sandwiched semigroup is of the form . We also show that if contains smooth functions, then μ is of the form (where σ is the (n-1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure and β a positive measurable bounded function on ); i.e. we have the classical Robin boundary conditions. The aim of this study is to examine prospective mathematics teachers’ generalizations of trigonometric functions from the unit circle to the Cartesian coordinate system. The researcher developed a test that aimed to reveal students’ generalizations, as well as the possible differences between them. The test was administered to 30 students who were near completion of their university degree program. The findings showed that the students were unable to establish the link between the unit circle and the Cartesian coordinate representation system; and therefore, they were not able to interpret the outputs of trigonometric functions with input of a real number that is not a multiple of π. The researcher also found that the students had developed certain misconceptions regarding the properties of trigonometric functions. To improve the teaching of trigonometric functions an instructional sequence and an alternative definition for trigonometric functions is proposed.  相似文献

In 2008 the global economy was rocked by a crisis that began on Wall Street, but quickly spread to Main Street U.S.A., and then to side streets around the world. Statisticians working in the service sector are not immune, with many concerned about losing their jobs. Given this dramatic course of events, how should statisticians respond? What, if anything, can we do to help our struggling organizations survive this recession, in order to prosper in the future? This expository article describes some approaches that we feel can help service industries deal with aftereffects of the financial meltdown. Based on an understanding of current needs of the service industries, we emphasize three approaches in particular: a greater emphasis on statistical engineering relative to statistical science, ‘embedding’ statistical methods and principles into key business processes, and the reinvigoration of Lean Six Sigma to drive immediate, tangible business results. The problem of determination of relaxation and retardation spectra (RRS) is considered from the viewpoint of up-to-date signal processing. It is shown that the recovery of RRS represents the Mellin deconvolution problem, which transforms into the Fourier deconvolution problem for data on a logarithmic time or frequency scale, where it can also be treated as the inverse filtering problem. On this basis, discrete deconvolution (inverse) filters operating with geometrically sampled data are proposed to use as RRS estimators. Appropriate frequency responses and algorithms are derived for estimating RRS from eight different material functions. The noise amplification coefficient is suggested to use as a measure for quantifying the degree of ill-posedness and illconditioness of the RRS recovery problem and algorithms. A methodology is developed for designing RRS estimators with a desired noise amplification, producing maximum accurate spectra for available limited input data. Practical algorithms for determining RRS are proposed, and their performance is studied. The algorithms suggested are compared with the so-called moving-average formulae. It is demonstrated that the minimum frequency range for recovering the point estimate of a relaxation spectrum depends on the allowable noise amplification (the degree of ill-conditioness) and is in no way limited by 1.36 decades, as it is stated by the sampling localization theorem.  相似文献

Educational reformation has proceeded slowly despite the many calls to improve science and mathematics for our students. The acronym STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) has been adopted by numerous programs as an important focus for renewed global competitiveness for the United States, but conceptions of what STEM entails often vary among stakeholders. This paper examines the conceptions of STEM held by faculty members from a public Research I institution in the middle of a regional “STEM movement.” Faculty members responded to two open‐ended questions: (1) What is STEM? and (2) How does STEM influence and/or impact your life? Although 72% of these faculty members possessed a relevant conception of STEM, the results suggest that they do not share a common conceptualization of STEM. Their conception is most likely based on their academic discipline or how STEM impacts their daily lives. STEM faculty members were likely to have a neutral or positive conception where non‐STEM faculty members often had negative feelings about STEM.  相似文献
