We discuss two-dimensional sigma models on moduli spaces of instantons on K3 surfaces. These N = (4, 4) superconformal field theories describe the near-horizon dynamics of the D1-D5-brane system and are dual to string theory on AdS3. We derive a precise map relating the moduli of the K3 type 1113 string compactification to the moduli of these conformal field theories and the corresponding classical hyper-Kahler geometry. We conclude that in the absence of background gauge fields, the metric on the instanton moduli spaces degenerates exactly to the orbifold symmetric product of K3. Turning on a self-dual NS B-field deforms this symmetric product to a manifold that is diffeomorphic to the Hilbert scheme. We also comment on the mathematical applications of string duality to the global issues of deformations of hyper-Kähler manifolds.  相似文献

We present ADHM-Nahm data for instantons on the Taub-NUT space and encode these data in terms of Bow Diagrams. We study the moduli spaces of the instantons and present these spaces as finite hyperkähler quotients. As an example, we find an explicit expression for the metric on the moduli space of one SU(2) instanton. We motivate our construction by identifying a corresponding string theory brane configuration. By following string theory dualities we are led to supersymmetric gauge theories with impurities.  相似文献

We construct the supersymmetric σ-model, in six dimensions, for an arbitrary hyper-Kähler manifold, and its minimal coupling to super-Yang-Mills theory. Non-trivial reduction to five or four dimensions yields the corresponding five- or four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric model with general scalar potential. We discuss briefly the coupling to supergravity in six dimensions and we give the on-shell supergravity torsion constraints.  相似文献

We consider euclidean D-branes wrapping around manifolds of exceptional holonomy in dimensions seven and eight. The resulting theory on the D-brane—that is, the dimensional reduction of 10-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory—is a cohomological field theory which describes the topology of the moduli space of instantons. The 7-dimensional theory is an NT = 2 (or balanced) cohomological theory given by an action potential of Chern-Simons type. As a by-product of this method, we construct a related cohomological field theory which describes the monopole moduli space on a 7-manifold of G2 holonomy.  相似文献

A method for constructing σ-model manifolds with geometries different from the conformally flat is proposed. It is based on dualization of the coupling constant and makes it possible to construct N = 4, 8 super-symmetric four-dimensional hyper-Kähler σ models in d = 1 with one triholomorphic isometry.  相似文献

We survey some features of equivariant instanton partition functions of topological gauge theories on four and six dimensional toric Kähler varieties, and their geometric and algebraic counterparts in the enumerative problem of counting holomorphic curves. We discuss the relations of instanton counting to representations of affine Lie algebras in the four-dimensional case, and to Donaldson–Thomas theory for ideal sheaves on Calabi–Yau threefolds. For resolutions of toric singularities, an algebraic structure induced by a quiver determines the instanton moduli space through the McKay correspondence and its generalizations. The correspondence elucidates the realization of gauge theory partition functions as quasi-modular forms, and reformulates the computation of noncommutative Donaldson–Thomas invariants in terms of the enumeration of generalized instantons. New results include a general presentation of the partition functions on ALE spaces as affine characters, a rigorous treatment of equivariant partition functions on Hirzebruch surfaces, and a putative connection between the special McKay correspondence and instanton counting on Hirzebruch–Jung spaces.  相似文献

We discuss recent progress in describing a certain non-Abelian vortex string as a critical superstring on a conifold and clarify some subtle points. This particular solitonic vortex is supported in four-dimensional supersymmetric QCD with the gauge group, N f = 4 quark flavors and the Fayet–Iliopoulos term. Under certain conditions, the non-Abelian vortex can become infinitely thin and can be interpreted as a critical ten-dimensional superstring. In addition to four translational moduli, the non-Abelian vortex under consideration carries six orientational and size moduli. The vortex moduli dynamics are described by a twodimensional sigma model with the target space ?4 × Y 6, where Y 6 is a non-compact Calabi–Yau conifold. The closed string states that emerge in four dimensions (4D) are identified with hadrons of 4D bulk N= 2 QCD. It turns out that most of the states arising from the ten-dimensional graviton spectrum are non-dynamical in 4D. A single dynamical massless hypermultiplet associated with the deformation of the complex structure of the conifold is found. It is interpreted as a monopole–monopole baryon of the 4D theory (at strong coupling).  相似文献

We present a method of construction of sigma-models with target space geometries different from conformally flat ones. The method is based on treating the constancy of a coupling constant as a dynamical constraint following as an equation of motion. In this way we buildN=8 supersymmetric four-dimensional sigma-models ind=1 with hyper-Kähler target space possessing one isometry, which commutes with supersymmetry.  相似文献

We extend equivariant dimensional reduction techniques to the case of quantum spaces which are the product of a K?hler manifold M with the quantum two-sphere. We work out the reduction of bundles which are equivariant under the natural action of the quantum group SU q (2), and also of invariant gauge connections on these bundles. The reduction of Yang–Mills gauge theory on the product space leads to a q-deformation of the usual quiver gauge theories on M. We formulate generalized instanton equations on the quantum space and show that they correspond to q-deformations of the usual holomorphic quiver chain vortex equations on M. We study some topological stability conditions for the existence of solutions to these equations, and demonstrate that the corresponding vacuum moduli spaces are generally better behaved than their undeformed counterparts, but much more constrained by the q-deformation. We work out several explicit examples, including new examples of non-abelian vortices on Riemann surfaces, and q-deformations of instantons whose moduli spaces admit the standard hyper-K?hler quotient construction.  相似文献

We show that one-loop string effects do not alter the form of the leading terms in the low-energy effective ten-dimensional N=1 supergravity theory derived from the heterotic string. We extend this result to the four-dimensional N=1 supergravity theory obtained after compactification, showing in particular that its Kähler potential is not renormalized by string loop effects or by the exchange of Kaluza-Klein modes. We also demonstrate that the Kähler potential and the gauge kinetic function are not renormalized by one-loop string effects in a wide class of four-dimensional formulations of superstring theories.  相似文献

We study the geometry of infinite dimensional moduli spaces in the Yang-Mills gauge theory over infinite connected sum spaces. We develop the technique of gluing infinitely many instantons, and apply it to the evaluation of the mean dimension of the moduli spaces.  相似文献

Some aspects of the moduli space of superconformal field theories are discussed. It is helpful to consider the conformal field theory as a background for propagation of strings and to exploit the space-time interpretation. Using this point of view we show that the metric on the moduli space of N = 4 superconformal field theory with c = 6 is locally that of O(20,4)/O(20) × O(4). We also discover some properties of the moduli space of N = 2 superconformal field theories with c = 9. Particular examples of these conformal field theories are sigma models on four- and six-dimensional Calabi-Yau spaces. Therefore, we can use this technique to learn about the moduli space of these spaces. For c = 6 we recover the known moduli space of K3. Our analysis of the c = 9 system leads to a new coupling in four dimensional supergravity. As a by-product, we prove that gauge couplings cannot depend on the moduli of N = 1 space-time supersymmetric compactifications.  相似文献

Motivated by Nekrasov’s instanton counting, we discuss a method for calculating equivariant volumes of non-compact quotients in symplectic and hyper-Kähler geometry by means of the Jeffrey-Kirwan residue formula of non-abelian localization. In order to overcome the non-compactness, we use varying symplectic cuts to reduce the problem to a compact setting, and study what happens in the limit that recovers the original problem. We implement this method for the ADHM construction of the moduli spaces of framed Yang-Mills instantons on \({\mathbb{R}^{4}}\) and rederive the formulas for the equivariant volumes obtained earlier by Nekrasov-Shadchin, expressing these volumes as iterated residues of a single rational function.  相似文献

We show that the usual formulation of the N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in terms of N = 1 superfields can be generalized to describe the full ten-dimensional theory.  相似文献

We consider the Beltrami equation for hydrodynamics and we show that its solutions can be viewed as instanton solutions of a more general system of equations. The latter are the equations of motion for an sigma model on 4‐dimensional worldvolume (which is taken locally HyperKähler) with a 4‐dimensional HyperKähler target space. By means of the 4D twisting procedure originally introduced by Witten for gauge theories and later generalized to 4D sigma‐models by Anselmi and Fré, we show that the equations of motion describe triholomophic maps between the worldvolume and the target space. Therefore, the classification of the solutions to the 3‐dimensional Beltrami equation can be performed by counting the triholomorphic maps. The counting is easily obtained by using several discrete symmetries. Finally, the similarity with holomorphic maps for sigma on Calabi‐Yau space prompts us to reformulate the problem of the enumeration of triholomorphic maps in terms of a topological sigma model.  相似文献

We study the Picard-Fuchs differential equations for the Seiberg-Witten period integrals in N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. For A-D-E gauge groups we derive the Picard-Fuchs equations by using the flat coordinates in the A-D-E singularity theory. We then find that these are equivalent to the Gauss-Manin system for two-dimensional A-D-E topological Landau-Ginzburg models and the scaling relation for the Seiberg-Witten differential. This suggests an interesting relationship between four-dimensional N = 2 gauge theories in the Coulomb branch and two-dimensional topological field theories.  相似文献

We show how the reduced self-dual Yang-Mills theory described by the Nahm equations can be carried over to the Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formalism employed recently in self-dual gravity. Evidence of the existence of a correspondence between BPS magnetic monopoles and space-time hyper-Kähler metrics is given.  相似文献

We prove conjecture due to Erickson-Semenoff-Zarembo and Drukker-Gross which relates supersymmetric circular Wilson loop operators in the N=4{\mathcal N=4} supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with a Gaussian matrix model. We also compute the partition function and give a new matrix model formula for the expectation value of a supersymmetric circular Wilson loop operator for the pure N=2{\mathcal N=2} and the N=2*{\mathcal N=2^*} supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a four-sphere. A four-dimensional N=2{\mathcal N=2} superconformal gauge theory is treated similarly.  相似文献
