The present contribution analyses the turbulence properties in unsteady flows around bluff body wakes and provides a database for improvement and validation of turbulence models, concerning the present class of nonequilibrium flows. The flow around a circular cylinder with a low aspect ratio and a high blockage coefficient is investigated. This confined environment is used in order to allow direct comparisons with realisable 3-D Navier–Stokes computations avoiding ‘infinite’ conditions. The flow is investigated in the beginning of the critical regime at Reynolds number 140 000. The analysis is carried out by means of 2-D PIV, of 3-C PIV and of high-frequency 2-D PIV. The experimental analysis contributes to confirm the validity of advanced statistical turbulence modelling for unsteady flows around bodies.  相似文献

A series of numerical simulations were performed to investigate the distribution and deposition properties of particles in turbulent flows bounded by permeable walls using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) with a Lagrangian trajectory approach. The wall permeation speeds were taken from 10−4 to 10−2 of the bulk velocity. The directions of the permeation speed were the same at both walls, and they were inward on one wall but outward on the other wall to reserve the fluid mass. Particles with Stokes number (respecting viscous time scale) around 0.1, 1 and 10 were released in the fully developed turbulent channel flow. The particle–particle interaction and the retroaction from particles to the fluid were neglected. The fluid-phase turbulence statistical properties and particle's transport characteristics by vortexes were then analyzed in details. If the wall permeation exists, the turbulence intensities will be depressed close to the outward permeable wall but increased near the inward permeable wall. Not influenced by the wall permeation, the suspended particles with St+ ∼O(1) tend to accumulate in the less vortical zones away from the wall, while those particles in the flow regions near the outward permeable wall will distribute disregarding of the vorticity. The turbulence structures near the outward permeable wall are found to exert promotional effects on the particle deposition rate, but such effects are different for particles with various Stokes number. A distribution tendency of streamwise streaks for the deposited particles is also found on the wall imposed by the high outward permeation speed and the clustering deposition pattern is more obvious with increasing particle Stokes number.  相似文献

Vortices have been described as the “sinews of turbulence”. They are also, increasingly, the computational engines driving numerical simulations of turbulence. In this paper, I review some recent advances in vortex-based numerical methods for simulating high Reynolds number turbulent flows. I focus on coherent vortex simulation, where nonlinear wavelet filtering is used to identify and track the few high energy multiscale vortices that dominate the flow dynamics. This filtering drastically reduces the computational complexity for high Reynolds number simulations, e.g. by a factor of 1000 for fluid–structure interaction calculations (Kevlahan and Vasilyevvon in SIAM J Sci Comput 26(6):1894–1915, 2005). It also has the advantage of decomposing the flow into two physically important components: coherent vortices and background noise. In addition to its computational efficiency, this decomposition provides a way of directly estimating how space and space–time intermittency scales with Reynolds number, Re α . Comparing α to its non-intermittent values gives a realistic Reynolds number upper bound for adaptive direct numerical simulation of turbulent flows. This direct measure of intermittency also guides the development of new mathematical theories for the structure of high Reynolds number turbulence.  相似文献

The paper is devoted to the mathematical modeling of naturally occurring downslope flows, such as snow avalanches, mudflows, and rapid landslides. The medium in motion is modeled as a non- Newtonian fluid, the non-Newtonian fluids of different types corresponding to different-in-nature flows. It is taken into account that the downslope flows capture the slope material and entrain it into the motion. The flow is assumed to be turbulent and the Lushchik–Pavel’ev–Yakubenko three-equation turbulence model is used. It is so generalized that it allows for flow unsteadiness, complicated rheological properties, the presence of a free boundary, and the mass transfer at the lower flow boundary. The effect of the bottom material capture and the nonlinear rheological properties of the medium in motion on the flow dynamics is numerically investigated.  相似文献

Single phase non-Newtonian microporous flow combined with the electroviscous effect is investigated in the pore-scale under conditions of various rheological properties and electrokinetic parameters. The lattice Boltzmann method is employed to solve both the electric potential field and flow velocity field. The simulation of commonly used power-law non-Newtonian flow shows that the electroviscous effect on the flow depends on both the fluid rheological behavior and pore surface area ratio significantly. For the shear thinning fluid with power-law exponent n < 1, the fluid viscosity near the wall is smaller and the electrovicous effect plays a more important role compared to the Newtonian fluid and shear thickening fluid. The high pore surface area ratio in the porous structure increases the electroviscous force and the induced flow resistance becomes important even to the flow of Newtonian and shear thickening fluids.  相似文献

The spanwise correlation of a circular cylinder and a trapezoidal bluff body placed inside a circular pipe in fully developed turbulent regime is studied using hotwire anemometer. The present configuration possesses complex fluid structure interaction owing to the following features: high blockage effect; low aspect ratio of the body; upstream turbulence and interaction of axisymmetric flow with a two dimensional bluff body. The spatial correlation of such configuration is seldom reported in the literature. Results are presented for Reynolds number of ReD=1×105. Three different blockage ratios (0.14, 0.19 and 0.28) are considered in the present study. Correlation coefficient is observed to improve with increase in blockage ratio. Compared to a circular cylinder, a trapezoidal bluff body possesses high correlation length. The near wall effects tend to increase the phase drift, which is reflected in low correlation coefficients close to the pipe wall. The results show that the simultaneous effect of curvature, low aspect ratio and upstream turbulence reduces the correlation coefficients significantly as compared to unconfined and confined (parallel channel) flows. The low frequency modulations with a circular cylinder are higher for lower blockage ratios. The three-dimensionality of vortex shedding for trapezoid with a blockage ratio of 0.28 was observed to be lower compared to circular cylinder and all other blockage ratios. Low frequency modulations were found to be responsible for weak vortex shedding from a circular cylinder compared to a trapezoidal bluff body. The vortex shedding is observed to be nearly two dimensional in case of a trapezoidal bluff body of blockage ratio 0.28.  相似文献

Combined Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) measurements have been performed in dilute suspensions of rod-like particles in wall turbulence. PIV results for the turbulence field in the water table flow apparatus compared favorably with data from Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of channel flow turbulence and the universality of near-wall turbulence justified comparisons with DNS of fiber-laden channel flow. In order to examine any shape effects on the dynamical behavior of elongated particles in wall-bounded turbulent flow, fibers with three different lengths but the same diameter were used. In the logarithmic part of the wall-layer, the translational fiber velocity was practically unaffected by the fiber length l. In the buffer layer, however, the fiber dynamics turned out to be severely constrained by the distance z to the wall. The short fibers accumulated preferentially in low-speed areas and adhered to the local fluid speed. The longer fibers (l/z > 1) exhibited a bi-modal probability distribution for the fiber velocity, which reflected an almost equal likelihood for a long fiber to reside in an ejection or in a sweep. It was also observed that in the buffer region, high-speed long fibers were almost randomly oriented whereas for all size cases the slowly moving fibers preferentially oriented in the streamwise direction. These phenomena have not been observed in DNS studies of fiber suspension flows and suggested l/z to be an essential parameter in a new generation of wall-collision models to be used in numerical studies.  相似文献

An instrument is described in which steady planar orthogonal stagnation flows of the type proposed by Winter [1] are achieved with lubrication. From pressure readings on steady results acceptable Trouton ratios are achieved for a Newtonian sample and results are obtained for a ‘Boger’ fluid showing high levels of extensional viscosity with Trouton ratios approaching 4 in the limit of zero stretch rate.  相似文献

In this paper, a new mechanism of flow instability and turbulence transition is proposed for wall bounded shear flows. It is stated that the total energy gradient in the transverse direction and that in the streamwise direction of the main flow dominate the disturbance amplification or decay. Thus, they determine the critical condition of instability initiation and flow transition under given initial disturbance. A new dimensionless parameter K for characterizing flow instability is proposed which is expressed as the ratio of the energy gradients in the two directions for the flow without energy input or output. It is suggested that flow instability should first occur at the position of Kmax which may be the most dangerous position. This speculation is confirmed by Nishioka et al.'s experimental data. Comparison with experimental data for plane Poiseuille flow and pipe Poiseuille flow indicates that the proposed idea is really valid. It is found that the turbulence transition takes place at a critical value of Kmax of about 385 for both plane Poiseuille flow and pipe Poiseuille flow, below which no turbulence will occur regardless the disturbance. More studies show that the theory is also valid for plane Couette flows which holds a critical value of Kmax of about 370.  相似文献

The modification of deposition mechanisms of small particles in wall turbulence due to enhanced near-wall fluctuations is presented. The direct numerical simulation database of turbulent air flow over a water surface populated by gravity-capillary waves of small wave slope was used to mimic the enhancement in fluctuation intensity. Lagrangian tracking of particles is performed under the assumption of one-way coupling between the particles and the flow. Two sets of particles have been considered with inertial response times of 5 and 15, respectively, normalized using the friction velocity at the air–water interface and the kinematic viscosity of air. Compared to wall-bounded flow, the particle deposition rates on the interface were found to be considerably higher; specifically for the low-inertia particles, an eightfold increase was observed. The deposition rate for particles of higher inertia increased by only 60%. The correlation characterizing particle deposition rates for wall-bounded flows, where the deposition rate is proportional to the square of the particle response time, was found to be invalid for the flow with enhanced near-wall turbulence. Comparison with experimental results on particle deposition onto rough walls showed better correlation. Depositing particles were divided into free-flight and diffusional deposition populations. Since the primary effect of the interfacial waves is to increase the turbulence intensity in the near-interface region with high particle concentration, a remarkable increase in diffusional deposition is observed. As in wall-bounded flows, diffusional deposition is seen to be the dominant mechanism of deposition. The free-flight mechanism, where particles acquire velocities high enough to travel directly to the interface, remains unaffected by enhanced near-wall velocity fluctuations.  相似文献

A new low-Reynolds-number kε turbulence model is developed for flows of viscoelastic fluids described by the finitely extensible nonlinear elastic rheological constitutive equation with Peterlin approximation (FENE-P model). The model is validated against direct numerical simulations in the low and intermediate drag reduction (DR) regimes (DR up to 50%). The results obtained represent an improvement over the low DR model of Pinho et al. (2008) [A low Reynolds number kε turbulence model for FENE-P viscoelastic fluids, Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, 154, 89–108]. In extending the range of application to higher values of drag reduction, three main improvements were incorporated: a modified eddy viscosity closure, the inclusion of direct viscoelastic contributions into the transport equations for turbulent kinetic energy (k) and its dissipation rate, and a new closure for the cross-correlations between the fluctuating components of the polymer conformation and rate of strain tensors (NLTij). The NLTij appears in the Reynolds-averaged evolution equation for the conformation tensor (RACE), which is required to calculate the average polymer stress, and in the viscoelastic stress work in the transport equation of k. It is shown that the predictions of mean velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, its rate of dissipation by the Newtonian solvent, conformation tensor and polymer and Reynolds shear stresses are improved compared to those obtained from the earlier model.  相似文献

A study is presented to evaluate the capabilities of the standard k–ε turbulence model and the k–ε turbulence model with added source terms in predicting the experimentally measured turbulence modulation due to the presence of particles in horizontal pneumatic conveying, in the context of a CFD–DEM Eulerian–Lagrangian simulation. Experiments were performed using a 6.5-m long, 0.075-m diameter horizontal pipe in conjunction with a laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) system. Spherical glass beads with two sizes, 1.5 and 2 mm, were used. Simulations were performed using the commercial discrete element method software EDEM, coupled with the computational fluid dynamics package FLUENT. Hybrid source terms were added to the conventional k–ε turbulence model to take into account the influence of the dispersed phase on the carrier phase turbulence intensity. The simulation results showed that the turbulence modulation depends strongly on the model parameter Cε3. Both the standard k–ε turbulence model and the k–ε turbulence model with the hybrid source terms could predict the gas phase turbulence intensity trend only generally. A noticeable discrepancy in all cases between simulation and experimental results was observed, particularly for the regions close to the pipe wall. It was also observed that in some cases the addition of the source terms to the k–ε turbulence model did not improve the simulation results when compared with those of the standard k–ε turbulence model. Nonetheless, in the lower part of the pipe where particle loading was greater due to gravitational effects, the model with added source terms performed somewhat better.  相似文献

Recent developments in the engine heat transfer modeling tend to improve existing wall heat transfer models (temperature wall functions) which mostly rely on the standard or low-Re variants of k-ε turbulence model. Presently applied mesh resolutions already allow for first near-wall computational cells reaching the buffer or locally even viscous/conductive sub-layer, thus increasing the importance of more sophisticated modeling approach. As temperature gradient-induced density and fluid property variations become significant, wall heat transfer is strongly influenced by property variations (viscous/conductive sub-layer) and predictive capability of the turbulence model (buffer region), standard wall laws being inadequate anymore, even for attached boundary layers. The present approach relies on the k-ζ-f turbulence model and formulates a compressible wall function of Han and Reitz in the framework of hybrid wall treatment. The model is validated against spark ignition (SI) engine heat transfer measurements. Predicted wall heat flux evolutions on the cylinder head exhibit very good agreement with the experimental data, being superior to similar numerical predictions available in the published literature.  相似文献

Instantaneous velocity and wall shear stress measurements are conducted in a turbulent channel flow in the Kármán number range of Reτ = 74–400. A one-dimensional LDA system is used to measure the streamwise velocity fluctuations, and an electrochemical technique is utilized to measure the instantaneous wall shear stress. For the latter, frequency response and nonuniform correction methods are used to provide an accurate, well-resolved wall statistics database. The Reynolds number dependency of the statistical wall quantities is carefully investigated. The corrected relative wall shear stress fluctuations fit well with the best DNS data available and meet the need for clarification of the small discrepancy observed in the literature between the experimental and numerical results of such quantities. Higher-order statistics of the wall shear stress, spectra, and the turbulence kinetic energy budget at the wall are also investigated. The present paper shows that the electrochemical technique is a powerful experimental method for hydrodynamic studies involving highly unsteady flows. The study brings with it important consequences, especially in the context of the current debate regarding the appropriate scaling as well as the validation of new predictive models of near-wall turbulence.  相似文献

Periodic wall oscillations in the spanwise or circumferential direction can greatly reduce the friction drag in turbulent channel and pipe flows. In a concentric annulus, the constant rotation of the inner cylinder can intensify turbulence fluctuations and enhance skin friction due to centrifugal instabilities. In the present study, the effects of the periodic oscillation of the inner wall on turbulent flows through concentric annulus are investigated by the direct numerical simulation (DNS). The radius ratio of the inner to the outer cylinders is 0.1, and the Reynolds number is 2 225 based on the bulk mean velocity Um and the half annulus gap H. The influence of oscillation period is considered. It is found that for short-period oscillations, the Stokes layer formed by the circumferential wall movement can effectively inhibit the near-wall coherent motions and lead to skin friction reduction, while for long-period oscillations, the centrifugal instability has enough time to develop and generate new vortices, resulting in the enhancement of turbulence intensity and skin friction.  相似文献

Certain modifications of three-equation turbulence models are proposed. They are intended for increasing the accuracy of the calculations of turbulent flows in nozzles with boundary layer separation and in supersonic jets with complicated shock wave structures. Basing on the idea of the inclusion of flow prehistory in terms of an additional relaxation equation for nonequilibrium turbulent viscosity we propose three modifications of the k-ω t model based on the k-ω model and a version of the k- ? t turbulence model. In these modifications we introduce an additional dependence of the nonequilibrium turbulent viscosity relaxation time on different physical parameters which can be important near the point of boundary layer separation from the nozzle wall, such as viscous effects and effects of large gradients of the mean velocity and the kinetic energy of turbulence (turbulent pressure). The comparison of the results of the calculations with the experimental data shows that all the proposed versions of the three-equation models make it possible to improve the accuracy of the calculations of turbulent flows in nozzles and jets.  相似文献

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements in liquid flows provide highly detailed 3D mean velocity and concentration data in complex turbulent mixing flow applications. The scalar transport analogy is applied to infer the mean temperature distribution in high speed gas flows directly from the MRI concentration measurements in liquid. Compressibility effects on turbulent mixing are known to be weak for simple flows at high subsonic Mach number, and it was not known if this would hold in more complex flows characteristic of practical applications. Furthermore, the MRI measurements are often done at lower Reynolds number than the compressible application, although both are generally done in fully turbulent flows. The hypothesis is that the conclusions from MRI measurements performed in water are transferable to high subsonic Mach number applications. The present experiment is designed to compare stagnation temperature measurements in high speed airflow (M = 0.7) to concentration measurements in an identical water flow apparatus. The flow configuration was a low aspect ratio wall jet with a thick splitter plate producing a 3D complex downstream flow mixing the wall-jet fluid with the mainstream flow. The three-dimensional velocity field is documented using magnetic resonance velocimetry in the water experiment, and the mixing is quantified by measuring the mean concentration distribution of wall-jet fluid marked with dissolved copper sulfate. The airflow experiments are operated with a temperature difference between the main stream and the wall jet. Profiles of the stagnation temperature are measured with a shielded thermocouple probe. The results show excellent agreement between normalized temperature and concentration profiles after correction of the temperature measurements for the effects of energy separation. The agreement is within 1 % near the edges of the mixing layer, which suggests that the mixing characteristics of the large scale turbulence structures are the same in the two flows.  相似文献

The flow fields in the neighbourhoods of series vascular stenoses are studied numerically for the Reynolds numbers from 100 to 4000, diameter constriction ratios of 0.2–0.6 and spacing ratios of 1, 2, 3, 4 and ∞. In this study, it has been further verified that in the laminar flow region, the numerical predictions by kω turbulence model matched those by the laminar‐flow modelling very well. This suggests that the kω turbulence model is capable of the prediction of the laminar flow as well as the prediction of the turbulent stenotic flow with good accuracy. The extent of the spreading of the recirculation region from the first stenosis and its effects on the flow field downstream of the second stenosis depend on the stenosis spacing ratio, constriction ratio and the Reynolds number. For c1 = 0.5 with c2c1, the peak value of wall vorticity generated by the second stenosis is always less than that generated by the first stenosis. However, the maximum centreline velocity and turbulence intensity at the second stenosis are higher than those at the first stenosis. In contrast, for c1 = 0.5 with c2 = 0.6, the maximum values at the second stenosis are much higher than those at the first stenosis whether for centreline velocity and turbulence intensity or for wall vorticity. The peak values of the wall vorticity and the centreline disturbance intensity both grow up with the Reynolds number increasing. The present study shows that the more stenoses can result in a lower critical Reynolds number that means an earlier occurrence of turbulence for the stenotic flows.
