Methanol was used as a probe molecule to examine the reforming activity of oxygenates on NiPt(111) and CoPt(111) bimetallic surfaces, utilizing density functional theory (DFT) modeling, temperature-programmed desorption, and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). DFT results revealed a correlation between the methanol and methoxy binding energies and the surface d-band center of various NiPt(111) and CoPt(111) bimetallic surfaces. Consistent with DFT predictions, increased production of H2 and CO from methanol was observed on a Ni surface monolayer on Pt(111), designated as Ni-Pt-Pt(111), as compared to the subsurface monolayer Pt-Ni-Pt(111) surface. HREELS was used to verify the presence and subsequent decomposition of methoxy intermediates on NiPt(111) and CoPt(111) bimetallic surfaces. On Ni-Pt-Pt(111) the methoxy species decomposed to a formaldehyde intermediate below 300 K; this species reacted at approximately 300 K to form CO and H2. On Co-Pt-Pt(111), methoxy was stable up to approximately 350 K and decomposed to form CO and H2. Overall, trends in methanol reactivity on NiPt(111) bimetallic surfaces were similar to those previously determined for ethanol and ethylene glycol.

Photoelectron spectra of the methoxy species formed by the decomposition of methanol on nickel(111) indicate that the C-O-nickel bond is normal or nearly normal to the metal surface. This structural assignment for the adsorbate complex is consistent with new photoelectron data using linearly polarized synchrotron radiation.

The adsorption of methanol and its subsequent transformation to form dimethyl ether (DME) on a commercial grade eta-alumina catalyst has been investigated using a combination of mass selective temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The infrared spectrum of a saturated overlayer of methanol on eta-alumina shows the surface to be comprised of associatively adsorbed methanol and chemisorbed methoxy species. TPD shows methanol and DME to desorb with respective maxima at 380 and 480 K, with desorption detectable for both molecules up to ca. 700 K. At 673 K, infrared spectroscopy reveals the formation of a formate species; the spectral line width of the antisymmetric C-O stretch indicates the adoption of a high symmetry adsorbed state. Conventional TPD using a tubular reactor, combined with mass spectrometric analysis of the gas stream exiting the IR cell, indicate hydrogen and methane evolution to be associated with formation of the surface formate group and CO evolution with its decomposition. A reaction scheme is proposed for the generation and decomposition of this important reaction intermediate. The overall processes involved in (i) the adsorption/desorption of methanol, (ii) the transformation of methanol to DME, and (iii) the formation and decomposition of formate species are discussed within the context of a recently developed four-site model for the Lewis acidity of eta-alumina.

A first-principles study of methanol decomposition on Pt(111)
A periodic, self-consistent, Density Functional Theory study of methanol decomposition on Pt(111) is presented. The thermochemistry and activation energy barriers for all the elementary steps, starting with O[bond]H scission and proceeding via sequential hydrogen abstraction from the resulting methoxy intermediate, are presented here. The minimum energy path is represented by a one-dimensional potential energy surface connecting methanol with its final decomposition products, CO and hydrogen gas. It is found that the rate-limiting step for this decomposition pathway is the abstraction of hydroxyl hydrogen from methanol. CO is clearly identified as a strong thermodynamic sink in the reaction pathway while the methoxy, formaldehyde, and formyl intermediates are found to have low barriers to decomposition, leading to very short lifetimes for these intermediates. Stable intermediates and transition states are found to obey gas-phase coordination and bond order rules on the Pt(111) surface.

Adsorption of methanol and methoxy at four selected sites(top, bridge, hcp, fcc)on Cu(111)surface has beeninvestigated by density functional theory method at the generalized gradient approximation(GGA)level. The cal-culation on adsorption energies, geometry and electronic structures,Mulliken charges, and vibrational frequenciesof CH_3OH and CH_3O on clean Cu(111)surface was performed with full-geometry optimization, and compared withthe experimental data. The obtained results are in agreement with available experimental data. The most favoriteadsorption site for methanol on Cu(111)surface is the top site, where C-O axis is tilted to the surface. Moreover, the preferred adsorption site for methoxy on Cu(111)surface is the fcc site, and it adsorbs in an upright geometrywith pseudo-C_(3v) local symmetry.Possible decomposition pathways also have been investigated by transition-statesearching methods.Methoxy radical,CH_3O,was found to be the decomposition intermediate.Methanol can be ad-sorbed on the surface with its oxygen atom directly on a Cu atom, and weakly chemisorbed on Cu(111)surface.Incontrast to methanol, methoxy is strongly chemisorbed to the surface.

The decomposition of methanol on the Ni(111) surface has been studied with the pseudopotential method of density functional theory-generalized gradient approximation (DFT-GGA) and with the repeated slab models. The adsorption energies of possible species and the activation energy barriers of the possible elementary reactions involved are obtained in the present work. The major reaction path on Ni surfaces involves the O-H bond breaking in CH(3)OH and the further decomposition of the resulting methoxy species to CO and H via stepwise hydrogen abstractions from CH(3)O. The abstraction of hydrogen from methoxy itself is the rate-limiting step. We also confirm that the C-O and C-H bond-breaking paths, which lead to the formation of surface methyl and hydroxyl and hydroxymethyl and atom hydrogen, respectively, have higher energy barriers. Therefore, the final products are the adsorbed CO and H atom.

Methanol adsorption and reaction have been studied on Rh-deposited cerium oxide thin films under UHV conditions using temperature-programmed desorption and synchrotron soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The methanol behavior was examined as a function of the Ce oxidation state, methanol exposure, and Rh particle size and coverage. When Rh nanoparticles were deposited on the ceria films, methanol decomposed on Rh to CO and H below 200 K. H atoms recombined and desorbed between 200 and 300 K. CO evolved from Rh deposited on fully oxidized ceria between 400 and 500 K. However, on reduced ceria films, the CO on Rh further decomposed to atomic C. Methanol adsorbed on the ceria films deprotonated to form methoxy as the only intermediate on the surface. This methoxy decomposed and desorbed as CO and H2 at higher temperatures regardless of the ceria oxidation state. Compared with the methanol reaction on Rh-free ceria thin films, formaldehyde formation from methoxy was completely suppressed after Rh deposition. Our results indicate that Rh can promote the decomposition of methoxy adsorbed on the ceria and that decomposition of methoxy intermediates occurred at the metal/oxide interfaces. On the other hand, the reduced ceria can promote total methanol decomposition on Rh.

The anharmonic properties of a surface intermediate, methoxy, adsorbed on Cu(100) are investigated by surface infrared overtone spectroscopy and density-functional-theory electronic structure calculations. The anharmonicity is measured in the zero-coverage limit, and it is observed that the anharmonicity is increased upon adsorption as compared with the free methanol. By combining experiments with calculations we demonstrate that modifications of the anharmonicity of the methoxy species is indeed induced by adsorption onto the copper surface and not by the formation of the methoxy species.

The adsorption of methanol on pure ZnO and Au‐decorated ZnO nanoparticles and its thermal decomposition monitored by temperature‐programmed desorption (TPD) experiments and by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), both applied under continuous flow conditions in fixed bed reactors, is reported. Two distinguishable methoxy species are formed during methanol adsorption on ZnO differing in the C? O stretching bands. During the subsequent TPD experiments two different H2 peaks are observed, indicating the conversion of methoxy into formate species. By applying different heating rates, activation energies of 109 kJ mol?1 and 127 kJmol?1 for the selective oxidation of the two methoxy species are derived. Correspondingly, the methoxy decomposition results in two distinguishable formate species, which are identified by the asymmetric and symmetric OCO stretching bands on pure ZnO and Au/ZnO. Based on the decreased intensities of the OH bands during methanol adsorption, which are specific for the various ZnO single crystal surfaces, on the different reactivities of these surfaces, and on the formate FTIR bands observed on ZnO single crystal surfaces, the two methoxy and the corresponding formate species are identified to be adsorbed on the exposed less reactive non‐polar ZnO(${10\bar 10}$ ) surface and on the highly reactive polar ZnO(${000\bar 1}$ ) surface. The simultaneous formation of H2, CO, and CO2 at about 550–600 K during the TPD experiments indicate the decomposition of adsorbed formate species. The CO/CO2 ratio decreases with increasing Au loading, and a broad band due to electronic transitions from donor sites to the conduction band is observed in the DRIFT spectra for the Au‐decorated ZnO nanoparticles. Thus, the presence of the Au nanoparticles results in an enhanced reducibility of ZnO facilitating the generation of oxygen vacancies.

Recent progress reveals that, in the methanol-to-olefin (MTO) process on acidic zeolites, the conversion of an equilibrium mixture of methanol and DME is dominated by a "hydrocarbon pool" mechanism. However, the initial C-C bond formation, that is, the chemistry during the kinetic "induction period" leading to the reactive hydrocarbon pool, still remains unclear. With the application of a stopped-flow protocol, in the present work, pure surface methoxy groups [SiO(CH(3))Al] were prepared on various acidic zeolite catalysts (H-Y, H-ZSM-5, H-SAPO-34) at temperatures lower than 473 K, and the further reaction of these methoxy species was investigated by in situ (13)C MAS NMR spectroscopy. By using toluene and cyclohexane as probe molecules which are possibly involved in the MTO process, we show the high reactivity of surface methoxy species. Most importantly, the formation of hydrocarbons from pure methoxy species alone is demonstrated for the first time. It was found that (i) surface methoxy species react at room temperature with water to methanol, indicating the occurrence of a chemical equilibrium between these species at low temperatures. In the presence of aromatics and alkanes, (ii) the reactivity of surface methoxy groups allows a methylation of these organic compounds at reaction temperatures of ca. 433 and 493 K, respectively. In the absence of water and other organic species, that is, under flow conditions and on partially methylated catalysts, (iii) a conversion of pure methoxy groups alone to hydrocarbons was observed at temperatures of T >/= 523 K. This finding indicates a possible formation of the first hydrocarbons during the kinetic induction period of the MTO process via the conversion of pure surface methoxy species (case iii). After the first hydrocarbons are formed, or in the presence of a small amount of organic impurities, surface methoxy groups contribute to a further methylation of these organic compounds (case ii), leading to the formation of a reactive hydrocarbon pool which eventually plays an active role in the steady state of the MTO process at reaction temperatures of T >/= 573 K.

The adsorbate species present during partial oxidation of methanol on a Cu(110) surface have been investigated in the 10(-5) mbar range with in situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and rate measurements. Two reaction intermediates were identified, methoxy with a C 1s binding energy (BE) of 285.4 eV and formate with a C 1s BE of 287.7 eV. The c(2x2) overlayer formed under reaction conditions is assigned to formate. Two states of adsorbed oxygen were found characterized by O 1s BE's of 529.6 and 528.9 eV, respectively. On the inactive surface present at low T around 300-350 K formate dominates while methoxy is almost absent. Ignition of the reaction correlates with a decreasing formate coverage. A large hysteresis of approximately 200 K occurs in T-cycling experiments whose correlation with adsorbate species was studied with varying oxygen and methanol partial pressures. The two branches of the hysteresis differ mainly in the amount of adsorbed oxygen, the methoxy species, and a carbonaceous species. Methoxy covers only a minor part of the catalytic surface reaching at most 20%. Above 650 K the surface is largely adsorbate-free.

It is demonstrated by in situ IR spectroscopy that, in methanol conversion on ZrO2 and 5% Cu/ZrO2 catalysts, methoxy groups are present on the catalyst surface, which result from O-H or C-O bond breaking in the methanol molecule. Two types of formate complexes, localized on ZrO2 and CuO, are also observed. The formate complexes form via the oxidative conversion of the methoxy groups. There are two types of linear methoxy groups. First-type linear methoxy groups condense with the formate complex located on CuO to yield methyl formate and then CO and H2. Second-type methoxy groups appear as intermediate products in the formation of dimethyl ether. The main hydrogen formation reactions are the recombination of hydrogen atoms (which result from the interconversion of surface complexes) on copper clusters and the decomposition of methyl formate. The source of CO2 in the gas phase is the formate complex, and the source of CO is methyl formate. The effect of water vapor and oxygen the surface reactions and product formation is discussed.

基于密度泛函理论(DFT), 研究了甲醇在Pd(111)面上首先发生O—H键断裂的反应历程(CH3OH(s)→CH3O(s)+H(s)→CH2O(s)+2H(s)→CHO(s)+3H(s)→CO(s)+4H(s)).

The reactions of methanol with and without O2 were studied on a flat, highly crystalline CeO2(100) thin‐film surface with ambient pressure XPS. In the absence of O2, the ambient pressure XPS results indicate that in both low‐pressure (≤10−5 Torr) and high‐pressure regimes (≥10−1 Torr), the dominant surface species is methoxy. Methanol decomposition substantially reduces the ceria and CX deposit build‐up on the surface. When O2 is present, CX does not accumulate on the surface and the dominant surface species is different in the low‐pressure and high‐pressure regimes. Methoxy dominates at low pressure, while formate dominates at the higher pressure. The type of surface species appears to be related to the ability of O2 to fully oxidize the ceria surface during the methanol reaction.

Methanol adsorption on beta-Ga2O3 surface has been studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and by means of density functional theory (DFT) cluster model calculations. Adsorption sites of tetrahedral and octahedral gallium ions with different numbers of oxygen vacancies have been compared. The electronic properties of the adsorbed molecules have been monitored by computing adsorption energies, optimized geometry parameters, overlap populations, atomic charges, and vibrational frequencies. The gallia-methanol interaction has different behaviors according to the local surface chemical composition. The calculations show that methanol can react in three different ways with the gallia surface giving rise to a nondissociative adsorption, a dissociative adsorption, and an oxidative decomposition. The surface without oxygen vacancies is very reactive and produces the methanol molecule decomposition. The molecule is nondissociatively adsorbed by means of a hydrogen bond between the alcoholic hydrogen atom and a surface oxygen atom and a bond between the alcoholic oxygen atom and a surface gallium atom. Two neighbor oxygen vacancies on tetrahedral gallium sites produce the dissociation of the methanol molecule and the formation of a bridge bond between two surface gallium atoms and the methoxy group.

The decomposition mechanisms of methanol on five different Pt surfaces, the flat surface of Pt(111), Pt‐defect, Pt‐step, Pt(110)(1 × 1), and Pt(110)(2 × 1), have been studied with the DFT‐GGA method using the repeated slab model. The adsorption energies under the most stable configuration of the possible species and the activation energy barriers of the possible elementary reactions involved are obtained in this work. Through systematic calculations for the reaction mechanism of methanol decomposition on these surfaces, we found that such a reaction shows the same reaction mechanism on these Pt‐based model catalysts, that is, the final products are all H (Hads) and CO (COads) via O? H bond breaking in methanol and C? H bond scission in methoxy. These results are in general agreement with the previous experimental observations. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
