Abstract:In ultra-intense laser--matter interactions, intense electric fieldsformed at the rear surface of a foil target may have stronginfluences on the motion of energetic electrons, and thereby affectthe electromagnetic emissions from the rear surface, usually ascribedto transition radiation. Due to the electric fields, transitionradiation occurs twice and bremsstrahlung radiation also happensbecause the electrons will cross the rear surface twice and havelarge accelerations. In the optic region, transition radiation isdominant. The radiation spectrum depends on the electric field onlywhen the electrons are monochromatic, and becomes independent of theelectric field when the electrons have a broadband momentumdistribution. Therefore, in an actual experiment, the electric fieldat the rear surface of a foil could not be studied just with themeasurement of optic emissions. In the terahertz region, bothbremsstrahlung and transition radiations should be taken intoaccount, and the radiation power could be enhanced in comparison withthat without the inclusion of bremsstrahlung radiation. The frequencyat which the maximum terahertz radiation appears depends on theelectric field.
