STUDY ON SELECTIVE HYDROGENATION OF FURFURAL TO FURFURYL ALCOHOL OVER HETEROPOLYACID MODIFIED RANEY NICKEL
Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol over Raney nickel modified with heteropolyacid was investigated. It was found that various 12 molybdophosphates (including salts of alkali, alkali earth and transition metals) were all effective for modifying Raney nickel in selective hydrogenation of furfural and the Cu 1.5 PMo 12 O 40 modified Raney nickel was the best one. Over the normal Raney nickel, the furfural conversion was 24 5% and the selectivity for furfuryl alcohol was 75% under the reaction conditions of T =353 K, p =2 0 MPa and t =60 min. Over the Raney nickel catalyst with 7 1% Cu 1.5 PMo 12 O 40 , the conversion and the selectivity increased greatly, they were 98 1% and 98 5% respectively, under the same reaction conditions. Moreover, when the conversion increased over 98%, the selectivity decreased slightly (only 1%). In contrast with it, in the case of normal Raney nickel catalyst, when the conversion increased to 56%, the selectivity decreased to 64%.
