Study on the Promoters of Bifunctional Catalyst for Conversion of Synthesis Gas to Dimethyl Ether

Abstract:Direct synthesis of dimethyl ether from synthesis gas was carried out over CuO ZnO Al 2O 3/HZSM 5 bifunctional catalysts containing various promoters (Mg, Mn, Zr, B) prepared by coprecipitating sedimentation method. These catalysts were investigated using XRD (X ray diffraction) and TPR (Temperature programmed reduction) techniques. The results show that addition of promoters affects the activities and properties of CuO ZnO Al 2O 3/HZSM 5 bifunctional catalysts, and Mg, Mn and Zr are favorable promoters for the conversion of syngas to dimethyl ether. In all catalyst systems, CuO, ZnO and HZSM 5 exhibit crystalline patterns with similar intensity, but Al 2O 3 and promoters could not be detected by XRD, which maybe exist in microcrystalline or amorphous state. Addition of the above promoters, except B, all causes the decrease of the reduction temperatures of CuO ZnO Al 2O 3/HZSM 5 bifunctional catalysts. Possible relationship between the activity and reduction temperature is discussed.
