Abstract: | The problem of the decay of an arbitrary two-dimensional discontinuity in a gas has been investigated analytically and numerically. When the boundary of the original discontinuity is a straight line with a break, the problem is reduced to the interaction of two one-dimensional arbitrary discontinuities. It is shown that the difference between the two-dimensional and one-dimensional solutions has a maximum when the decay of the the discontinuity is accompanied by the formation of shock waves that interact with each other and with other gas-dynamic discontinuities.
